He was an occasional contributor to the New York Obscrtcr, Central Prc$bylerian, Troy Times and other papers, writing both prose and verse, but was more fond of rhyming in letters to friends than in public print. Y., where he lived until his graduation from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, with degree of Civil Engineer, in 1879. During the college year of 1879 80, he filled the Chair of Mathematics in Lake Forest (III.) University, under the presidency of the Rev. Dr. D. S. Gregory. From August to December, 1880, he was assistant foreign corres- pondent in the banking house of Drexel, Morgan & Co , New York, which place he resigned to become connected with the John C. Green School of Science, of Princeton College, to build up a new department, that of Graphics. The work being successful, a new chair was created in June, 1883, he receiving the appointment to the Professor- ship of Descriptive Geometry, Stereotomy and Technical Drawing. During the same year he became a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He married 22 May, 1884, Mary Hewes Bruere, of Princeton, N.
