Introduction to Snoezelen ®
The word Snoezelen ® derives from two Dutch words; Snuffelen
(to seek out) and Doezelen (to relax). It was originated in Holland in
the early 1980’s as a concept of recreation and relaxation for
disabled adults leading to a landmark publication by Ad Verheul and
Jan Hulsegge in 1987 referring to the “Snoezelen” approach.
“... a sensitive, caring, non-directive approach in which the
atmosphere of safety and security is encouraged. The enabler and
client will share a common, positive emotional experience during
the activity. There is no formal focus upon therapeutic outcome –
rather the focus is to assist users to gain maximum pleasure from
the activity that they and the enabler are involved in.”
Louise Haggar
Initially Snoezelen ® Multi Sensory rooms and products had no other
purpose other than enjoyment, however over the past 30 years their
use has extended to assist all ages and ability levels. Through
detailed research by leading therapists and institutions all over the
world Snoezelen ® has shown to have positive effects for individuals in
regards to:
Mental Illness
Autism
ADHD
Chronic Pain
Dementia
Acquired Brain Impairment (ABI)
Impaired Motor Ability
Early Intervention and Early Years learning
Special Education Needs
Psychiatric Care
“Snoezelen ® manipulates brain chemistry through the senses, to
set the tone for motivation and functional attention…… It lowers
the stress chemistry and increases the relaxation chemistry.
The key is finding the right combination”
Linda Messbauer
Snoezelen ® environments are very similar to Multi Sensory
Environments (MSE) and are alike in look and feel in many ways.
However, only Rompa ® can provide a true Snoezelen ® environment.
We believe that it is the use of the environment and the Snoezelen ®
principle which is far more important than the products in it. For this
reason we have developed 10 vitally important “rules” to provide
Snoezelen ® exclusive to Rompa ® ’s way of working.
Snoezelen ® needs to:
Be safe, comfortable and respectful to users
Promote enjoyment & motivation
Facilitate calming or stimulation based on the user’s requirements
Allow freedom from pressure to achieve
Empower the user to make choices
Promote a positive relationship between user and caregiver
Aid the exploration of the sensory world
Educate through motivation and sensory feedback
Support planning, observation and recording to reinforce positive
activities
Enhance the quality of life
