questions relating to NEPTUN.
The following pages introduce NEPTUN and its seven
subsystems of application.
VA TECH HYDRO
Water to Wire
VA Technologie AG is a globally active Technology
and Service company. Its core activities are metallurgy,
energy transmission and distribution, water systems
and industrial services.
VA Technologie AG was founded in 1993 as a listed
VA TECH HYDRO had a workforce of 3,000 with a
turnover of around 738 million euros and a steadily
growing order book.
VA TECH HYDRO came into existence as a result
of the consolidation of the hydro-related activities
of VA TECH ELIN, TECH ESCHER WYSS and
VA TECH VOEST MCE. The company is organized in
four divisions: Large Hydro, Compact Hydro, Service
& Rehab and Combined Cycle. VA TECH HYDRO has
innovative concepts to improve the efficiency and
flexibility of hydroelectric plant and provides a sound
foundation for future expansion.
NEPTUN
Success integrated.
Harnessing water to produce energy is a matter of
increasing public interest: international initiatives have
raised the profile of hydro-power as an alternative
energy source, and reservoir power stations offer
great potential to generate large amounts of energy
in a short space of time.
In parallel with this, an increasingly exacting market is
demanding ever-greater efficiency and flexibility, as a
result of which only a prudent investment strategy will
guarantee the future of hydro power. In many cases,
investment in up-to-date secondary technology
represents the most cost-effective strategy available
to companies. This secondary technology is divided
into two main categories: hardware and engineering.
Historically, hardware came from a variety of disparate
sources. Today, however, systems use modern,
standardised microprocessor technology, the logical
consequence of which is a universal, integrated
approach to the varied technologies existing within a
system. Furthermore, by using standard components,
the money spent on maintaining stocks of spare parts
can be greatly reduced.
The costliest tasks in the engineering field are signal
conditioning and connection and integration of
heterogeneous systems. Depending on the power
plant, there can be hundreds of analogue and digital
signals to deal with, each at a different strength and
each of a different quality, most of which have to be
recorded and processed manually. For this reason a
central database, which would also be compatible
with any future changes or expansion to the plant, is
of the highest priority.
So costs in both of these areas must be reduced if
future investments are to be feasible and cost-effective.
Result
Engineering
Hardware
The NEPTUN philosophy is quite simple: The more
you do for your power plant, the more cost-effective
and easier the process becomes. And because
NEPTUN can be implemented in stages, you can go
forward step by step.
The seven pillars represent the seven areas of
integrated secondary technology. In contrast to the
traditional approach, which essentially viewed these
areas in isolation (see illustration left), NEPTUN’s
comprehensive, integrated approach clearly gives
added value (illustration right).
Company capital freed
Result
Savings
Engineering/Hardware
Engineering
Hardware
This means that every investment pays for itself many
times over: firstly, hardware costs are lower than in
conventional systems, as only a small number of
standard components are needed, and secondly, any
subsequent technological integration will require the
integration of ever fewer signals, noticeably reducing
engineering costs. Thirdly, as there will be fewer
replacement parts to deal with, the cost associated
with maintaining stocks of spares will also fall.
has specialised know-how in the fields of automation,
control systems and project implementation.
In the following pages we are going to show you just
what we should get together and talk about.
Automation & Control
Have you noticed something?
Probably not.
And quite rightly too – our modern automation
systems keep a very low profile. But they do ensure
that your plant operates smoothly and safely at all
times.
In exceptional cases they will override any affected
plant component, switching it to a pre-defined and
safe operating status – and they remain operable at
any time, either on site or remotely.
The benefits of our expertise are clear right from the
beginning of a project. Naturally, our systems are
easy to integrate into your plant and are divided into
independent units. And all control and regulation
functions are carried out close to the process.
Process signals are logged and managed without
multiple signal recording.
Over 25 years’ experience
1,000 components worldwide
150 power plants automated
High-performance communications concepts compatible
with international standards ensure that your
systems can be expanded and enlarged in the future.
So after your systems have been successfully installed
and commissioned, you can be secure in the knowledge
that you can add further units, such as a substation,
at minimal expense at any time. The integrated
nature of our systems means maintenance and service
charges are kept to a minimum, while fewer components
translate to lower spare parts costs.
As you can see, our automation and control systems
are kind to your nerves and save you time and a lot of
money. And that you will notice.
Excitation
Something to get
excited about.
Over 30 years’ experience
1,000 exciters worldwide
40,000 MW excited
15,000 operational years
Whether you just want to modernise your voltage
regulator or use a static excitation system: our
state-of-the-art excitation systems for synchronous
generators make it possible for the energy generated
by the turbines to be transferred to the national grid
more efficiently, helping you reduce power loss.
That our excitation systems are easy to integrate into
your plant goes without saying. No matter which of
our products you choose, you can always rely on our
tried-and-tested technology.
Intelligent limitation regulators make sure that all
values remain within defined boundaries. In the case
of static excitation, direct access to the rotor and all
the benefits of an electric brake give you an excellent
control dynamic at all times.
NEPTUN can be expanded in stages – at minimal
expense, of course. And the integrated nature of the
system and the small number of spare parts required
will also reduce your costs.
Higher returns, less downtime and a high degree of
user friendliness. One regulator, one piece of documentation,
one real advance. Now that is something
to get excited about.
Power Plant Management
The more complex the problem,
the simpler the solution
Successful management means making the right
decisions, and you can only do that if you have all the
data you need, linked and processed as required.
So the more complex your problem, the more clearly
you’ll see the advantages of our cutting-edge plant
management solutions: solutions we’ll develop to
incorporate various different elements of your plant’s
management structure.
The most important goal for us is to ensure maximum
availability of your generation equipment while providing
optimum support for your management team. We
also strive to increase efficiency, reduce operating and
maintenance costs and minimise capital tie-up.
Over 30 years’ experience
Over 50 power plants with
control functions
Parallel control of multiple
regulating units
If you want to combine several power plants into a
single cascade, certain universally relevant questions
need to be considered (maintenance cycles, contracts,
official requirements, etc.). Or you can post data from
your power plant on an intranet or internet site. These
are just some of the many convenient options open
to you.
Our standardised engineering and hardware concept
means that our solutions are easy to integrate into
your existing power plant structure. Maintenance,
service and spare parts costs can also be significantly
reduced.
You’ll see: if you no longer have to worry about
everything yourself, we have done our job properly.
Monitoring & Diagnosis
Monitoring & Diagnosis
Fewer “sick-days” and increased output.
Imagine that the individual components of your plant
are your patients. Then imagine that there are different
types of patient: some of them come for a check-up
at the sign of even the most minor complaint – all they
seem to do is hold up the smooth running of the plant
– while others only come to you when it is almost too
late.
How would it be if every part of your power plant were
to let you know if things weren’t going well? Or even
tell you how things could work even better?
Our user-friendly monitoring and diagnosis system can
help you achieve just that. It reduces maintenance
costs and increases the overall cost-efficiency of your
plant.
The system helps you recognise age-related problems
and faults as well as their causes before they lead to
noticeable and costly damage, and monitors turbines,
shafts, bearings and generators for mechanical,
dielectric or thermal problems.
We use the latest hardware and software – all able to
cope with future development or expansion – which
will complement any existing monitoring systems and
process-specific upgrades.
Cost of installation and integration with your existing
control system is minimal, which in turn means lower
engineering and investment costs.
50 units monitored worldwide
3,100 MW monitored
1,600,000 hours of monitoring experience
Observe all relevant data in all operating conditions,
analyse trends and be notified if defined limits are
exceeded. That way you can be sure of your diagnosis
and know that you’ve prescribed the right treatment.
Protection
Have you ever heard of a VIP?
For us a VIP is a “very important power plant” – and
every plant we look after is a VIP. So what does that
mean in practice?
It’s nice to know that your generators, transformers or
compact installations are well protected against electrical
damage. Regardless of whether your system is wired
for 15.7, 50 or 60 Hertz: our bodyguards do everything
they can to make sure that you’re well protected:
they’re fast, reliable and they cover your whole system.
Over 30 years’ experience
1,500 protection installations worldwide
34,000 MVA protected digitally
490 operating years’ digital protection experience
Our years of experience help us choose the right
strategy to give you the best protection. High quality
standardised equipment reduces your hardware and
engineering costs and keeps spare part stocks as
low as possible.
Our engineers will help you to install your protection
equipment cost-effectively, or alternatively can look
after the whole project for you. That way you get the
best technical solution for the best possible price.
And our digital protection system won’t just monitor
your plant; it will also monitor itself. An integrated
analysis tool will help you to make improvements in
your equipment and/or its usage.
Interested?
Hire our “bodyguards” and you too can be one of our
“very important power plants”.
Synchronization
Wouldn’t it be great
if everything worked
together in harmony?
A steady hand and total concentration used to be the
basic requirements for successful parallel generator
switching. Nowadays all you have to do is choreograph
the progress while watching everything happen
on your monitor. While the almost inaudible synchronization
process unfolds in the machine hall, you can
relax in the knowledge that your plant’s cost-effectiveness,
reliability and functional capacity have all been
improved.
Over 30 years’ experience
500 digital synchronization
devices installed
1,200 MVA synchronised
Our digital synchronization systems with their innovative
hardware and software perform switching operations
safely and precisely. All data is logged so that
even difficult problems are easily resolved. That way
you can spend more time fine-tuning your plant’s
performance. And our reliable well-tested redundant
technology will ensure that the whole process goes
exactly the way you want.
As you can see, our digital synchronization systems
have a lot going for them and provide performance
you can rely on. How’s that for harmony?
Turbine Controller
Our rule:
Always be flexible
If you’re someone who always likes to get the right
number of revs you’ve got to stay pretty flexible.
Regardless of how much power you want to generate,
our universal turbine controller let you use your turbines
to the full.
Our turbine controller, from conventional standard
regulator with PID structure to condition-based regulators,
guarantee safe and optimal control of all types
of turbine. The modular system architecture is based
on high-performance multiprocessor technology and is
also extremely easy to use.
Over 160 years’ experience
25,000 turbines regulated worldwide
225,000 MW regulated
Drift-free, no-maintenance revolution logging and a
servo-motor-setting go without saying, and our hardware
requires only the bare minimum of space. And
because the hardware is identical to other modules in
the NEPTUN range, you save on hardware and
engineering costs from the word go and can keep
your spare parts stocks to a minimum.
Regardless of whether you have Kaplan, Francis or
Pelton turbines, we’ll organize it for you.
