<strong>Directory</strong> Memorial<br />
The Addie Gooch Class was organized in 1920.<br />
Originally it was named The Loyal Worker's Class.<br />
At that time members were still in high school.<br />
When promotion time came the girls didn't want<br />
to leave "Miss Addie" and the feeling was mutual.<br />
When the railroad was booming and other<br />
business flourished, the class grew large - maybe<br />
as many as 60 joined. The class sold greeting<br />
cards and cookbooks to raise funds. At revivals<br />
they could fill several pews. Then when business<br />
declined many people moved away. "Miss Addie"<br />
taught the class as long as her health permitted.<br />
Afterwards some to the teahcers were Lillian<br />
Alderson, David Eskridge, Roberta Reed, Carla<br />
Leslie and Patricia Worles.
Dedication<br />
This directory is dedicated to the members of the Hinton First United Methodist <strong>Church</strong> community.<br />
There are many opportunities for service within the church and in the community, tapping a<br />
broad range of spiritual gifts and natural talents and abilities. This document provides me a way<br />
to share my talents and abilities. The First United Methodist <strong>Church</strong> <strong>Directory</strong> is a work in<br />
progress and it would not be complete without thanking those who continually provided<br />
support and offered encouragement as I utilized the degree (Ed.D. in Educational Computing) I<br />
spent a lifetime earning.<br />
First, I must thank Tom Hutchison and Bill Sorg who were dedicated to getting as many pictures<br />
for the directory as there were people who would let them take one. (You won’t find many<br />
pictures of me, since I was busy doing other tasks). I must also thank India Brown who worked<br />
diligently to record the names of all church members; and Phyllis Parker, Martha Gilbert, and<br />
Renee Farley, who provided me with countless lists containing addresses, emails, phone<br />
numbers, birth dates, and other contact information. A special thanks also goes to Larry<br />
Meador who made numerous announcements in church requesting information from those in<br />
attendance and updated the church website to link to the directory. I must also thank those<br />
who welcomed me into their home or business to snap a picture, pick up one to be scanned, or<br />
collect a missing piece of information. I particularly appreciate those who provided information<br />
electronically -‐ including those with pictures on Facebook that I borrowed -‐ that saved a ton of<br />
time! Most of all, I must thank my husband Jim who helped me go through the many lists, the<br />
hundreds of names and contact information, proofed nineteen draft documents, and took time<br />
to offer suggestions for items to include in the directory. His support and encouragement got it<br />
completed in just 12 days. The rest of the past year was spent refining the original work.<br />
