Always Looking For a Challenge Whether it’s lunch at The Bread Co., Tuesday nights at BWW, or Goody’s which is set to open later this month The Mansion Mall is once again a retail hot spot in the 573, and Jim Bailey is the man behind the property being brought back to life. It turns out that the Mansion Mall could quite possibly still be blight sitting at one of the busiest intersections in the 573 except that it was a challenge that opened up at the time Jim Bailey was looking for one. “I was looking for a challenge. I am always looking for new things to accomplish, and when this became available it made sense.” said Bailey. The Mansion Mall was originally built in 1970 by the Mc Lane family of Poplar Bluff. Many will Birthdays, Mother’s Day, Teachers, Friends, Sisters, Baby Showers, Bridal Showers, etc. remember it was the original location of one of the first Wal- Mart stores. Wal- Mart relocated to a new supercenterseveral blocks south in 1987. The Mansion Mall got its name from the old Mansion that occupied the site as a restaurant throughout the 1970s. While it had a great past the 90’s and the early part of this century were unkind to the property. It was largely vacant and in disrepair. In 2004 the city began a process of taking over the site of the Mansion Mall and the Valley Plaza. Soon after the city announced their intentions the property was sold to Southern Missouri Bank. The center was purchased in 2005 by Jim and his wife Shannon Bailey. People all over the area have since seen the center has be totally reconstructed and brought up to today’s standards. Included in the massive redevelopment are new storm water management, tuck pointing, painting, gutters, the parking lot reshaped and Asphalted as well as all new mechanicals, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, all new roofing, new parking lot lighting, and finally two new Signs displaying tenant logos. The Mansion Mall isn’t Bailey’s first commercial development. BBQ lovers in the 573 have a new must eat at place in Porky’s located on South Westwood Blvd in Poplar Bluff. From Ribs to Pork Steak no one will leave Porky’s hungry. Bill Wilson and his wife Heather opened their first restaurant three years ago in Kennett and have since expanded to Poplar Bluff. The restaurant is family owned and you can tell it by how nice and polite the staff is once you enter. When you walk into Porky’s the front door rings the cowbell overhead, and you have pictures of Poplar Bluff’s past all along the walls. The décor isn’t complete without checking out the jukebox. For starters we enjoyed an appetizer. The fried mushrooms were outstanding, and we always appreciate a restaurant with sweet tea. We tried the pork “Where Poplar Bluff does lunch” 1836 N. Westwood Blvd. Poplar Bluff, MO 63901 573-785-8500 www.thebreadco.com Dining Porky’s BBQ in Poplar Bluff steak and it was spot on. It is almost bigger than the ample sized plate, and the BBQ sauce gave it a great flavor. The couple we were with had the ribs and spared us a couple….they were great. In fact we cleaned ours right to the bone. We asked about the sauce and we were told it was a family recipe and had won several awards. It is not too sweet, just about right. While the entrée was remarkable the sides were just as good. They simply have the best potato salad we had ever eaten. It is creamy and you literally have never tasted anything like it. For dessert we ordered some peach cobbler, and although we were full and shouldn’t have even ordered it….we finished it. Everyone knows folks in the 573 love their BBQ, and all those that do should definitely put Porky’s on their list of must stops soon. Porky’s is located at 3206 South Westwood Blvd. in Poplar Bluff; you can call them at 573-785-4227. Porky’s also delivers in and around the Poplar Bluff area.
