Eating Well At The Convention
by the ACPA Commission for Wellness (2009) • contributed by Noel Harmon
• Skip breakfast buffets, bring your own granola bars/fresh fruit/or packaged oatmeal you can prepare in your hotel
room.
• Scope out the food options before you get there! At buffet tables, scope out the options first. Make a mental note
of what youʼd like to eat, before you fill your plate. This way you can get a taste of everything youʼd like to try and
not feel deprived, but you wonʼt thoughtlessly pile all sorts of food on your plate.
• Eat your dinner before you head out to the socials. If you eat ahead of time, youʼll be less likely to mindlessly
snack.
• At the socials: One strategy is to take a bite of an appetizer youʼd like to try, and then put it down. Youʼll get a
taste, but you wonʼt get all the calories. Another strategy is to fill your plate with veggies and fruit first (avoid
drowning them in dressing or sauces) and supplement with small appetizers and other low-calorie crunchers. The
third strategy is to choose only lean protein and low-fat items. For example, youʼll limit yourself to shrimp with
cocktail sauce, chicken satay, or meatballs.
• Bring plenty of water with you at all times, as the conference centers can be dry, and walking around can
dehydrate you. Help the environment and bring your own container you can refill.
• Ditch junk food like soda, candy, and chips that donʼt fill you up and can ultimately deflate your energy!
• Itʼs OK to snack! Some things to consider when snacking:
1. Healthy snacks provide fiber and nutrients your body needs.
2. You can curb the feeling of hunger or starvation right before a meal, which prevents overeating. Snacking
may help you eat smaller portions and reduce your calorie intake.
3. Though individual calorie needs vary, your body needs fewer calories as you age.
4. Eating smaller meals more often may help you stay on track.
5. Try to keep your snack portions small and less than 250 calories. Spacing out meals and snacks can help
prevent weight gain. The Nutrition Facts Label on packaged foods will help you figure the calories and
nutrients that are in one portion size.
