FATHER CONSTANTINE
Second Sunday After Pascha: Feast Of The Sunday Of Thomas
The Orthodox Church observes the Sunday of Thomas one week following the celebration of the
Sunday of Holy Pascha. The day commemorates the appearance of Christ to His disciples on the
evening of the Sunday following Passover. It also commemorates the appearance of the Lord to His
disciples eight days later when Thomas was present and proclaimed “My Lord and my God” upon
seeing the hands and side of Christ.
This Sunday is also called Antipascha (meaning “in the stead of Pascha,” not “in opposition to
Pascha”) because with this day, the first Sunday after Pascha, the Church consecrates every Sunday of
the year to the commemoration of Pascha, that is, the Resurrection. Saint Thomas the Apostle is
commemorated by the Church on October 6.
The events commemorated on the Sunday of Thomas are recorded in the Gospel of Saint John
20:19-29. Following the crucifixion and burial of Christ, the disciples were gathered in a room with
the doors closed and locked for fear of the Jews. On the evening of the Sunday after Passover, Jesus
Christ entered the room and stood in their midst, greeting them with the words, “Peace be with
you.” (v. 19) He showed the disciples his hands, feet, and side. (v. 20)
Thomas was not present with the disciples when Jesus appeared, and he did not accept the
testimony of the other disciples concerning Christ’s Resurrection. He stated, “Unless I see the mark of
the nails in his hands and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not
believe.” (vv. 24-25)
Eight days later, the disciples were gathered together again with Thomas present, and the Lord
appeared in the same manner. Standing in their midst he said, “Peace be with you.” He then spoke
directly to Thomas and said, “Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it
in my side. Do not doubt but believe.” (vv. 26-27) Thomas answered, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus
replied by saying, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen
and yet have come to believe.” (v. 29)
The icon of the Sunday of Thomas depicts Christ standing in the
midst of the disciples. He has appeared to the eleven in the upper room, and
he is inviting Thomas to come and examine his hands and his side. Thomas
is reaching out to touch the side of Jesus. He is also looking to Jesus in a
manner that indicates his faith and the proclamation recorded in Scripture.
The Sunday of Thomas is celebrated with the Divine Liturgy of Saint
John Chrysostom. On this Sunday and throughout the Paschal period until
the Apodosis or leave-taking of Pascha, the day before the Feast of the
Ascension, the services begin with the chanting of the troparion of Pascha,
“Christ is risen….” Scripture readings for the feast are the following: At
Orthros: Matthew 28:16-20, the first of eleven resurrectional Gospel
passages that are read in a cycle throughout the year during the Sunday
matins. On this day the cycle always begins with the first Gospel passage; At
the Divine Liturgy: Acts 5:12-20 and John 20:19-31.
Apolytikion (Grave Tone)
While the tomb was sealed, You, O Life, did shine forth from the grave, O Christ God; and while the
doors were shut, You did come unto Your disciples, O Resurrection of all, renewing through them an
upright Spirit in us according to Your great mercy.
Kontakion (Plagal of the Fourth Tone)
With his searching right hand, Thomas did probe Your life-bestowing side, O Christ God; for when
You did enter while the doors were shut, he cried out unto You with the rest of the Apostles: You are
my Lord and my God.

“Heart to Heart” Pillow Crafting Session
Please bring your bagged lunch and join us on Saturday, May
19 th , when we will meet in the Aegean Hall from 10am-3pm to
make another batch of pillows for the cardiac patients at Florida
Hospital. We will need help in sewing and stuffing the pillows.
Everyone is able to join in this very worthwhile project. No
crafting skills are necessary, and the fellowship as we work is a
joy. Those who are not able to contribute their time can
participate by donating a yard of cotton fabric, a bag of fiber fill,
or by making a monetary contribution to offset the cost of
purchasing these items. Everyone should support this wonderful
project in some way. There are few among us who have been so
blessed as to not know someone who has gone through what these
patients suffer. The need is truly there! Please lend your support.
National Philoptochos/OCF Commitment
It’s that time of year again, when we must think of the spiritual
futures of our high school graduates as they move forward as
young adults into the secular world. Our goal is to register all our
college students studying away from home. Please support this
nationwide effort!
Each registered student will be connected with a Philoptochos
member in their college town so the parent and the student will
have a contact person and a connection to the new town and its
local Orthodox Church. If your loved one is not registered yet,
please contact Flo for a registration form.
When we are contacted by OCF with their list of students
studying locally, we will need to match these students with a
Philoptochos Member in our community. Please let Flo know if
you are interested in serving as a local contact person to a student
and their family, and a connection to our Holy Trinity Church.
Please support the Philoptochos OCF Ministry so we may
continue to nurture our children in our beautiful Orthodox Faith.
Narthex Servers Needed
Philoptochos is responsible for serving on the 4 th Sunday of
every month. Unfortunately, we cannot seem to get enough
volunteers for this very important task.
Ideally, there should be six volunteers. Two individuals to
maintain the candle supplies and candle boxes, another two
people to monitor the doors into the nave, and the last two would
bring the large candles up to the icons, pass the trays, and usher
during Holy Communion and Dismissal.
Narthex servers are expected to arrive in church before 9am,
and remain until after dismissal. Please consider making yourself
available for Narthex Duty.
Philoptochos Workshop
St. Basil and St. John Chrysostom were among some of the
Early Church Fathers who spoke and taught extensively on their
social and philanthropic concerns. As the church grew, these
concerns were expressed in many organized and practical ways,
through the support and administration of hospitals, orphanages,
homes for the aged, cemeteries for strangers, and houses for the
poor. Philanthropia is a tradition of the Greek Orthodox Church
dating back to the Byzantine Empire, and those who practice
Philanthropy are truly the hands of the church in the world.
Eighty years ago, over 300 Greek Orthodox women’s clubs
from churches cross the country began to function under the
Archdiocese, being officially merged into the one National
Philoptochos Society. Some of these early chapters had actually
been active for almost 40 years, ministering to the needs of those
around them. Philoptochos wasn’t formed to do the work; it was
formed to organize the work that was already being done.
Our year-end Philoptochos General Meeting will be held on
Tuesday, June 5 th , at 7:00 p.m. in the Aegean Hall. As of this
writing we expect Metropolis of Atlanta Board Members Dee
Nicholaou and Cindy Xenick to offer a mini workshop on
Philoptochos, with a focus on its organization, the duties of the
officers of the chapter board, and an overview of the many
Philoptochos obligations and commitments, on both the National
and Metropolis level. Although this presentation was originally
intended for the board, we believe it will be very informative, so
we invite all the “friends of the poor” in our community, members
and non-members, to come and learn more about the workings of
our beloved Philoptochos Society, the largest Christian women’s
charitable organization in the United States.
As St. James tells us in his epistle, “Show me your faith
without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.”
Then he tells us to be “doers of the Word”, and not just hearers.
The members of the Philoptochos are “doers. Every one of us,
striving to be as fully Christian as we are called to be; showing our
faith by what we do; exercising our Christianity in an organized
and productive way.
All ladies and gentlemen in our community are invited to join
as members and associate members. By joining Philoptochos,
you will teach your children and your grandchildren, by your
example, to give of themselves to the church, and to its good
works through Philoptochos. Everyone, in every Greek
Community, should be either an active or a supporting member of
Philoptochos. It is your right, your privilege, and your obligation.
MINISTRY RESOURCES
The Holy Trinity operating budget for the calendar year 2012 will be $652,978. Our Stewardship giving should support all the Parish
Ministries and the entire operating budget.
That would mean each family gives ONLY $32 per week
We should not depend on special affairs to meet our budget, for this is our direct responsibility. Stewardship places the responsibility
on us, for we are the recipients of God’s gifts and play an active role in perpetuating His work of salvation. The expenses of our Parish
are vital to our Church for: •Keeping in Touch With You •Maintaining our Buildings •Those Who Serve Us •Worship and Education
•National Ministries Commitment.
The quality of our service as a Parish, Metropolis, and Archdiocese depends directly on the level of your generous giving.
With My Own Church, members can submit online
registrations, edit their family or member information,
add a new family member, upload a family photo, and
more. All member submissions are reviewed by your
church administrator, who can accept changes into
your ParishSOFT database or reject them as needed.
My Own Church uses ParishSOFT’s ConnectNow technology, so you can log in to your church
database from a smart phone or any device with an Internet connection.
With anytime, anywhere mobility like this, you can work remotely—even look up addresses or
important family information to support the ministry work that happens in locations like hospitals,
homes, shelters and more. For members who increasingly manage their personal business and
finances online, My Own Church connects them with the Church in new ways, giving them the
freedom to update the information at any time—all without paper forms or phone calls to the
parish office. Members can also access the online parish directory so you can stay in touch with
everyone and get the most current census information out there.
If you or your spouse have your e-mail on file with the front office, you can log into the
system and get started today! If you are having trouble, please e-mail the front office at mail@
htgocorlando.org and write your correct or current e-mail to add to the system!
