Dear Friends,
Happy New Year!
I hope you had a blessed Christmas and are enjoying
the reflective moments of the last days of the
year. Reginald H. Fuller, a British-born biblical
scholar and teacher, wonderfully describes the days
from Christmas to New Years as a time in which we
worship together because thats where God seeks us
out through sacrament, sermon and mission. This is a
time to celebrate the mystery of Gods self-disclosure
in Jesus. This is a time to gather for growth and spiritual
maturity. It is the grand reunion of the faith family
to renew our commitment to embody the blessing
of God from generation to generation. I pray that
these days will offer you the opportunity for the kind
of reflection and renewal Fuller describes.
As I reflect on the year, I am thankful for the generous
and willing spirit of the Westminster family of
faith. We have come a long way in the past year.
Thanks to the diligent and creative work of the Personnel
Committee, staff changes were opportunities
for renewal and refocus for Children and Youth ministries,
Music and Pastoral care. Among the most
visible changes has been the creation of Timbrel &
Lyre under the direction of Karmella Sellers and
partnering with Hillcrest Family Services for Maria
Wiblin to be their Chaplain and our Minister of Congregational
Care. Jim Mathis joined us as the Sunday
hospitality Custodian, bringing his bright smile and
Child Care Provided
willing spirit to the church. Melanie Case continues
to offer solid and creative leadership as Interim Director
of Youth Ministry and Cheryl Betts did a great
job helping with Christian Education and Pastoral
Care. Our continuing staff members in administrative,
music, child care and custodial positions helped
make our transitions go as smoothly as possible.
Thanks to everyone in the church for making this
an outstanding year. The Session and Board of Deacons
have great plans that you will be hearing about
as 2010 unfolds before us. 2010 begins another year
of great promise in our service as Christs People
Called to Glorify God in this place.
Your participation and financial generosity make
it possible for us to begin the process of searching for
a full time Associate Pastor for Youth and Christian
Education ministries. We will continue discussion
about how we prepare for establishing the position
and calling this pastor after worship beginning
January 10.
Let us look forward to 2010 with an anticipation
that welcomes Gods presence and looks forward to
the Spirits leading as we grow and mature in our
commitment to serve Christ.
Has it really been two months? I
am so grateful for the welcome that
I have received from the Westminster
Families. It is hard for me to believe that two months
ago I was walking around the snow covered streets of
Minneapolis and here I am walking around the snow
covered hills of Dubuque. I would like to thank everyone
for the warm greeting from a wave to a smile. I am
sincerely grateful for the warm welcome and that has
been extended. It is fitting that my arrival has been
around Thanksgiving, Advent, and Christmas as I have
been able to think of many blessings that I have had this
year in particular. As I have been able to join you on the
Advent journey, I look with hope and eagerness to the
WESTMINSTER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH FOUNDATION UPDATE:
As Presbyterians, we celebrate our faith in many
ways. Sharing our wealth, both spiritual and material, is
one of the cornerstone principles of our Presbyterian
heritage. Consequently, many Presbyterians choose to
make gifts of their accumulated resources to their
church. Over the years certain members of this
congregation have generously made gifts or
bequests to the Westminster Presbyterian
Church Foundation. The Foundation was established
for the purpose of acquiring and providing
financial resources in order to support
specific projects within the Church and in its
mission and ministry within the community and the
world. All gifts and bequests received by the Foundation
are assigned to a permanent endowment fund and thus
continue to grow and give in perpetuity.
The 1850 Society was created to recognize and honor
those who over the years have made gifts or bequests to
the Foundation and those who have indicated that they
have made provisions for the Church or the Foundation
in their estate plans. The first annual dinner and recognition
event for members of The 1850 Society was held last
May, and a specially designed plaque located at the rear
of the sanctuary lists the names of both living and deceased
members.
Annually the Foundation may award one or more
grants for the purposes enumerated above. The size of
the grant(s) awarded depends upon the dollars available
from investment income. In turn, the dollars available
from investment income are directly related to the size of
the permanent endowment fund. This past year the
Foundation awarded a grant of $4,000 to Hillcrest Family
Services in order to help fund a half-time chaplains
4 WESTMINSTER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
continued journey that we will share.
Some of you I have had the pleasure
of meeting personally and have been
able to begin putting a name with a face; others I have
yet to meet and wait with joy and anticipation. As we
begin a new year together, I am excited for the possibilities
of our ongoing ministry together.
In God's Grace,
position. This grant played a role in acquiring the services
of Maria Wiblin, Westminsters new Minister of
Congregational Care.
The Foundation has developed a new attractive and
informative brochure copies of which have been
placed in the narthex and adjacent to The 1850
Society plaque in the sanctuary. If you have not
already done so, you are cordially invited to
pick up a copy of this brochure and to read and
reflect upon its contents. If you have any questions
about the brochure or the Foundation,
please feel free to contact any of the following
members of the Board of Managers for the Foundation:
John Adams, Jim Huff, Ed Blinks, Sally Madden,
Wally Brown, Lois Pearce, or Jim Edwards.
If you have made provisions for the Church or the
Foundation in your estate plans and have not yet informed
the Foundation of this fact, you are respectfully
requested to do so by completing the form included in
this issue of the newsletter and subsequently mailing or
returning it to the Foundation at the Church.
One of the important goals of the Foundation is to
appreciably increase the size of its permanent endowment
fund and thereby enable it to significantly increase
the dollar amounts awarded through its grant program.
Consequently, the Foundation sincerely encourages
members of the Church to seriously consider making
gifts to the Foundation and/or to make provisions for the
Church or the Foundation in their estate plans. By so
doing, you will enable the Foundation to more effectively
support the Church and affect the lives of others
for years to come an enduring commitment which will
continue to grow and give long beyond your lifetime.

Operation Christmas
Child Gift Delivery
By Wade Pond
In October of this year, Mosaic,
Westminsters young adults
group, packed 24 shoe boxes full
of small gifts to go to underprivileged
children. In early December,
my family took these boxes
to an Operation Christmas Child
(OCC) collection and distribution center in Minneapolis
and took a tour of the facilities. Little did we realize the
extent of the outreach of OCC and the commitment of its
volunteers.
OCC begins accepting volunteer help requests in
early August and fills up rapidly. On any given shift, as
many as 250 volunteers assist in sorting, preparing, and
processing the gifts.
The volunteers come
from wide and far,
often including youth
groups. The gifts,
which include a small
personalized note, are
received by children
throughout the world.
Annual Christmas Brunch, Dec. 13
What a wonderful sight to see so many of our church family eating brunch together
following worship! We filled Fellowship
Hall with laughter, conversation, and great food.
It was great to see so many groups sitting around
and talking and enjoying the Christmas season.
We send a special thanks to everyone who
helped make this event possible, including our
High School youth, Matthew & Mark Niemer, Karla Maxwell, Craig & Sue
Case, and Kim Bemboom & Darren DeMoss.
8 WESTMINSTER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
For many of these
children, it will be
the only Christmas
gift they receive. OCC is the largest Christian outreach
program in the United States. This year, they will deliver
boxes to nearly 8.2 million children in over 100 countries.
It is very humbling to realize that a couple of dollars
and a few hours will result in a smile that lights up
an entire village in a foreign land. Though a child receives
the gift, that child will often share the priceless
items in their shoebox with friends and family. The staff
of OCC says that one
shoebox impacts 10
people in the village.
Mosaic is very
thankful to the Westminster
family who so
generously donated gifts
to be included in the
shoeboxes this year.
Westminster’s Blood Drive—
IMPORTANT DATE CHANGE!!
Thursday, January 14, 2010, 2-6pm
NOTE: Westminsters Annual Red Cross Blood Drive has a new date!! Because of an anticipated blood
shortage in early January, the Red Cross asked Westminster to have our Blood Drive earlier in the month.
We are now scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 14.
Last years drive was a great success, and we are hoping this year to be even better. Heres how you can
help:
1. Sign up to donate! We are now taking appointments for the Blood Drive! Appointments arent required,
but we request them for two reasons: 1) they help us to anticipate the number of personnel
needed for the drive, and 2) they help YOU if you need a specific time slot. Call Sharon at the office
(583-1729) or visit givebloodgivelife.org to schedule an appointment.
2. Volunteer: We need people to help with:
• Advertising;
• Calling appointment-holders to remind them of their appointment;
• Checking people in on the day of the drive;
• Helping to load/unload equipment on the day of the drive;
• Working in the canteen area on the day of the drive;
• General assistance.
If you are interested in helping out, please contact the office.
Thanks for all your help, Westminster! Together we can save lives!
