Corporation; election and powers <strong>of</strong> the Corporation’s <strong>of</strong>ficials (sections 2<br />

to 9)<br />

(c) appointment and removal <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficers, employees and chaplain;<br />

accounting arrangements; civil procedure issues; status <strong>of</strong> this Act<br />

(sections 10 to 16).<br />

5 Geo.4 c.v (1824) (Asylum for Female Orphans Act)<br />

5. According to its long title, the purpose <strong>of</strong> the Asylum for Female Orphans Act <strong>of</strong><br />

1824 (“the 1824 Act”) was:<br />

to amend and render more effectual an Act <strong>of</strong> His late Majesty relative to the<br />

Asylum for Female Orphans.<br />

6. The preamble to the 1824 Act recorded the wish <strong>of</strong> the Corporation to buy the<br />

freehold <strong>of</strong> the land in the parish <strong>of</strong> St Mary, Lambeth which the Corporation<br />

occupied under a lease granted by the City <strong>of</strong> London.<br />

7. The 1824 Act provided as follows-<br />

(a) the conveyance to the Corporation <strong>of</strong> the freehold land that it currently<br />

occupied was authorised; conveyancing procedures; authority for the<br />

Corporation to dispose <strong>of</strong> unwanted land (sections 1 to 10)<br />

(b) provision for reducing the financial contributions made by the guardians<br />

<strong>of</strong> the orphanage; power to increase the number <strong>of</strong> vice-presidents and<br />

to alter existing voting arrangements; status <strong>of</strong> this Act (sections 11 to<br />

15).<br />

Female Orphan Asylum Amendment Act 1870<br />

8. The purpose <strong>of</strong> the Female Orphan Asylum Amendment Act 1870 (“the 1870<br />

Act”) was to amend the Acts <strong>of</strong> 1800 and 1824. The preamble to the 1870 Act<br />

recorded that the Corporation had moved the Orphanage from Lambeth to<br />

Beddington Manor in Surrey in 1866 (having bought the freehold <strong>of</strong> the Beddington<br />

premises in 1864).<br />

9. The 1870 Act provided as follows-<br />

(a) short title <strong>of</strong> the Act; scope <strong>of</strong> charity extended to include all fatherless<br />

girls, whether or not their mothers were still alive; the charity to be<br />

known in future as the Female Orphan Asylum (sections 1 to 3)<br />
