Maynooth Academy Act <strong>of</strong> 1808/ Maynooth College Act <strong>of</strong> 1845<br />
1. This note proposes the repeal <strong>of</strong> two obsolete 19 th century Acts relating to St<br />
Patrick’s College at Maynooth in County Kildare, Ireland.<br />
Background<br />
2. St Patrick’s College, Maynooth (“the College”) 36 was founded in 1795 as a<br />
seminary for the education <strong>of</strong> Catholic priests. Situated 15 miles from Dublin, the<br />
College has over the years ordained more than 11,000 priests. The College is today<br />
the only major seminary in Ireland.<br />
3. The two Acts proposed for repeal were passed by the United Kingdom<br />
Parliament to amend two Acts <strong>of</strong> the Parliament <strong>of</strong> Ireland that related to the initial<br />
running and supervision <strong>of</strong> the College. 37<br />

4. According to its long title, the purpose <strong>of</strong> this 1808 Act (“the 1808 Act”) wasto<br />
amend Two Acts, passed in Ireland, for the better Education <strong>of</strong> Persons<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essing the Roman Catholic Religion, and for the better Government <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Seminary established at Maynooth for the Education <strong>of</strong> such Persons, so far as<br />
relates to the Purchase <strong>of</strong> Lands and compounding Suits.<br />
5. The 1808 Act provided as follows:<br />
(a) the trustees <strong>of</strong> the College were empowered to reach compromises and<br />
settlements in any legal property claim made by or against the College<br />
(b) the trustees were empowered to purchase land, not exceeding in value<br />
£1000 per annum (excluding the value <strong>of</strong> the land already held by the<br />
College).<br />
