High School
RAMPAGE
Vaclav Cafourek
Staff Reporer
Mayde Creek is currently
undergoing construction provisioned
by last year’s bond election.
Th e building project will result
in the construction of a new
front offi ce in the main building
and a new entrance to the ninth
grade center to serve as entrance
vestibules, as well as changes to
the current front and attendance
offi ces. Th e changes are meant
to make all school visitors enter
through the front offi ce when
visiting the school and improve
campus security. Construction
started on April 16 and should be
fi nished at the end of the school
year.
Principal Dr. Cazilda Steele,
who saw the plans for the project,
says the new front offi ce will be
built in front of the current one
and by the entrance to the building.
“What they’re going to do in
the front is get rid of the zigzag of
windows in the front, and that’s
where the new front offi ce is going
to be. It’s just going to come out
into the main hallway a little bit
Graduation time is near and
in order to graduate, students
need to have 26 credits. Summer
is quickly approaching and so is
the time to start signing up for the
Katy Summer Academic Term.
Th e Katy Summer Academic
Term off ers students a chance to
take courses during the summer,
whether a student is looking to
graduate early or complete a few
classes before the new school year
begins.
Th is year, high school students
who enroll in summer
school courses will be taking
classes at Morton Ranch High
School. Th e fi rst semester will
start on June 12 and end on June
28. Th e second semester will start
on July 2 and end on July 19. Th e
tuition for summer school is $200
per semester; however, there is a
lab fee of $25 for those who take
P.E., science or art over the summer.
Jill Weaver is a teacher for
19202 Groshke Rd., Houston, TX 77084 | Volume 28 | Issue 7 | May 2012
Mayde Creek to Have New Look
because most of it is going to be to
the outside. Th e entrance to room
A101 is going to be gone too, so
this whole area is going to become
the main offi ce and it’s going to be
all glass and the inside of the wall
is going to have some real pretty
tile on it,” Dr. Steele said.
According to Dr. Steele, the
entrance to the ninth grade center
will also be changed to so that
visitors will not be able to gain access
to the ninth grade area unannounced.
“Mayde Creek is very open
when you walk in, but at every
other school in the district, people
have to check in at a front offi ce
before they can be allowed into
the main hallway. We don’t have
that here. So what they’re going
to do is build a new enclosure in
the ninth grade center where the
sliding doors are. Th ey’re going
to change the sliding doors from
one side to the other, and they’re
going to create another entrance
into the main offi ce so that when
you walk into the ninth grade
center, you’re walking into the
main offi ce fi rst,” she said.
Apart from the changes to
programs at the school such as
ESOL, Reading Improvement and
Practical Writing and thinks summer
school has plenty of benefi ts.
“Summer school gives students
a chance to catch up on
courses. I think students who
want to get ahead would be interested
in taking summer courses,”
said Weaver.
Th ere are two diff erent types
of courses that a student can take;
original credit and re-take courses.
Original credit is for students
who wish to take a course for the
fi rst time. Original classes range
from World Geography to Math
Models. Re-take courses are for
students who were not able to
complete a course due to excessive
absences during the regular
school year. Re-take course offer
all science, English and social
studies classes. Courses can be
completed aft er one semester or
two depending on the course.
the school’s entrances, the main
building’s current front offi ce and
attendance offi ce will also be undergoing
some changes.
“Th e original main offi ce is
going to become our attendance
offi ce. Where attendance is currently
down there by the Ram
wall, they’re going to turn into a
really nice, up-to-date conference
room for parent conferences,
teacher meetings and those kinds
of things. So we’re going to have
a new attendance offi ce and conference
room when school starts,
and it’s going to be a lot better for
parents when they’re coming in
because they won’t have to walk
so far,” Dr. Steele said.
Construction on the project
will take place from evening until
night so as to not disturb day-today
activities at school.
“Th ey’re going to come in at
night to work, from 3 to 11 p.m.,
starting in the ninth grade center
fi rst, and then moving this way
and it’s not going to disrupt anybody.
Th e one thing that students
are going to see, especially on the
main campus, is that they are going
to build a work wall that’s go-
Failing to take both semesters
would not grant a student their
credit.
“I think students should take
advantage of taking the half semester
courses like Health and
Speech because in 12 days you
have already earned half a credit,”
said Weaver.
Daily attendance is needed to
receive full credit for all courses.
A student can have a minimum of
one absence. If a student has more
than one absence, they will not
get credit for the course and will
be withdrawn from the summer
school course with no refund.
“It takes about 12 days for a
student to earn half of a school
credit in summer school. So if you
miss one day, it is like missing a
week of school,” said Weaver.
Th ere are diff erences between
summer school and regular
school and some rules do not
change. Th e rule for textbooks
Th e front of Mayde Creek’s main bulding will be remodeled into a new front offi ce
to be used starting next school year.
ing to be in the main hallway so
that no one gets hurt with all the
stuff that they’re going to be doing
inside there,” she said.
Th e building changes will
be the last renovations to Mayde
Creek High School provided by
last year’s bond election. According
to Dr. Steele, the project will
be the last signifi cant construction
venture at Mayde Creek for
some time.
“Th is will be the end of the
remains the same; students are
responsible for any damages done
to a textbook that they are given.
If a student does not return a textbook
then they will not be receiving
credit for their course. One
big diff erence is that the school
will not be serving lunch, but
students are welcomed to bring
a lunch from home or purchase
snacks during the break that they
are given.
Th e school week is also
shorte r, it is from Monday
through Th ursday. Th e school day
however is still the same, Summer
school students will be in school
from 7:30-2:30. Bus transportation
is provided by the school, but
it is not necessary for all students
to take the bus. Th e bus will not
be dropping students off at their
bus stop, instead students will
be picked up and dropped off at
a Katy ISD school that is closest
to their home. Unlike every six
bond, and when the district ever
does another bond package for
growth, Mayde Creek will be in
it for some major deep renovations,
a lot of painting, a lot of
re-carpeting, kind of like what
you’re seeing at Mayde Creek Junior
High. So if we get any work
done the next time for updating
and remodeling, it will be in a big
way, but I don’t see that happening
anywhere between the next
two or three years,” Dr. Steele said.
Registration for Summer School Begins
weeks, parents will receive a report
seven days into the term. Th e
report card will be sent to the parent’s
e-mail. Th e grade students
receive for a certain class will
count towards their GPA.
“Th e pacing in summer
school is a lot diff erent. It is also
more self-motivated and more
homework is given to students
that attend summer school,” said
Weaver.
Other summer programs are
available like KOLA, TAKS acceleration
and dual credit. For
further information on these programs,
visit a grade level counselor.
Summer term registration
forms can be found in the counselor’s
offi ce or at www. katyisd.
org. All students who want to
sign up for summer school must
need approval by their grade level
counselor and/or principal. Early
registration is taking place now
through May 16.

Dr. Steele
What is the hardest thing
you have faced this year?
One of the biggest things that we have all
faced in our school is student apathy. The
reason I talk about personal best so much is
because there are many students that could
A: give a hoo-ha about personal best. They think
they can make a 70 and just get it done or
they can fail the fi rst and second six weeks,
but get it together third or on the semester
exam. Life isn’t about just ge ng through. I
would think that everyone should want to be
really good at what they do. In athle cs and
academics when students get scholarships,
that’s a good thing. I would think that more
students would feel that need to do their
best.
If you have a question you would like to ask Dr. Steele, bring it to B110, Ms. Cypher.
May 2012 Mayde Creek High School
Santana Rodriguez
Co-Managing Editor
How does it feel
to work at Mayde
Creek for 25 years?
It is a good indication of how I feel
that I have chosen to stay here for
that long. I have had many chances to
move around the district, but have felt
most at home here.
To you, what has
changed about
MCHS?
When I fi rst started here I wondered
why we were in the middle of the
wilderness- there was nothing around
and Barkers Ridge had two streets.
Fry, Clay and Mason were all one lane
streets. I used to hunt down the road.
Santana Rodriguez
Co-Managing Editor
How does it feel to be
able to get the chance
to maybe run Olympic
track?
It feels great to get the chance to run in
Olympic track. It is a really big accomplishment
for me.
Are you nervous at all
due to the fact that
you will be facing top
competition?
I’ve been running for about six years,
so most of the nervousness goes away.
I’m really confi dent in myself.
What motivates you?
As of now my number one motivation
is to get a full ride scholarship to college
and after I get into college, I plan
on hopefully running in the Olympics.
How have
you changed
throughout the
years of being at
Mayde Creek?
I have learned to fi ght the battles
worth fi ghting and to let all the little
stuff go behind me that is not worthy
of worrying about. I have learned
that humor is one of the best tools for
discipline and that if I give students
respect I will earn theirs.
What has been
your favorite
memory at Mayde
Creek?
There are too many to choose just
one, needless to say I could go on for
quite a while with tales of my adventures
here and the strange things
students have done.
What is practice like?
Track takes up a lot of my time. During
the summer and after school while
everybody gets to go party and vacation,
I’m still working hard in and out
of practice, becoming better.
What did it take to get
to this point?
I gave up most of my free time to
work on getting better and I just never
stopped trying. The one thing I will
never stop doing is running whether
it’s on the track or somewhere else. It
feels great to be able to get the chance
to live out my passion.
What do you think
about when you run?
I just really try to focus on doing everything
right and just mainly stay confi -
dent.
What type of Olympics
do you want to do and
when?
I want to be able to compete in the
world Olympics in the next four years.
Mike Jones
Mike
Mike
Jones
Jones
Why have
you chosen
to work at
MCHS for so
long?
I have really enjoyed the
students and teachers on
the campus. Most of the
time it does not feel like
work but I am amazed
that I get paid to do what
I like to do.
Do you plan
on retiring
soon or
will you
stay in the
classroom?
My plan is to have next
year's freshmen be my
last class I will see graduate.
I would then like to spend a few
more years teaching at a junior high.
They are going to build one close to
where I live and I would like to move
there.
Taira
Taira
Carney
Carney
Taira Carney
How does it all work?
It depends on what events you do. If
you hit a certain standard, you’re invited
to go to the Olympics tryouts which
is usually held at the University of Oregon
and if you make the cut then you
will be able to join the Olympics team.
What events do you
want to participate in?
I jump and I sprint but I’m a better
jumper. I’m actually going to state for
long jump and I’m number one in the
region right now so if I ever were to
make it in the Olympics I would probably
participate in long jump and triple
jump.
What will be the hardest
thing about competing
in the Olympics if you
make the cut?
The hardest thing would just be the
type of caliber of athletes and veterans
of the sport that I may go against.
RAMPAGE In-Depth May 2012 Mayde Creek High School
THE ROAD TO
Finding True Happiness
Through Small Changes In
Emily Grizzell
Editor in Chief
You can either sit around and
wait for great things to happen to
you or you can take a pro-active role
in opening your life up to possibility.
Th ink of it this way: there is no such
thing as luck, but rather you create
your own luck. You can do that
by being as prepared as you can for
opportunities when they come. Th e
wider you open the door into your
life, the more likely you will be able
to take advantage of those opportunities
that present themselves in your
life.
If you fi nd yourself unfulfi lled,
it is likely the cause of something in
your life like your job, relationships,
friends or the place you live and the
fact that it is not fully meeting your
needs. You need to go out there and
fi nd fulfi llment in other things. If
you are unhappy or depressed, it is
not easy and it is not fun, but you are
responsible for going out and getting
your needs met. You are responsible
for changing your own life; you cannot
depend on other people to ensure
your happiness.
It is always hard to give up the
time and energy you have put into
something you care so much about,
but if a job or relationship does not
completely meet your needs, you
will have to risk the comfort and
Your Own Life
the eff ort you put into something in
exchange for a chance of becoming
truly happy and fulfi lled in life.
“I’ve had to quit a previous job
because it was stressing me out way
too much. It wasn’t a very hard job,
but the hours were long and I wasn’t
having any fun. I was so much happier
when I quit and found a new job
that I enjoy,” said senior Jamie Burch.
A simple way to be happier more
frequently is to stop and smell the
roses. It might be the oldest cliché in
the book, but it is also the truest. According
to neuro-psychologist Rick
Hanson, Ph.D, when you slow down
your busy day and take some time
to appreciate the little things in life,
your brain is actually making a memory
of the moment. In the future, you
will have an easier time dealing with
random stress.
“One time I was driving to
school and I was just in a horrible
mood for no reason. Suddenly I
noticed the sunrise and it totally
changed my mood and outlook of my
day to come. It was so beautiful, so
heavenly, it made me smile and feel
good inside ,” said Journalism teacher
Shetye Cypher.
If you fi nd yourself feeling different
with certain people, change
who you hang out with. According
to Marco Iacobini, M.D., emotions
are contagious so people catch
moods like they catch colds. If you
hang out with upbeat people, you
will fi nd yourself being happy more
oft en. When you watch a person doing
something, the mirror neurons in
your brain are activated, even if you
are not doing anything. Because of
this, when you see someone smile,
your mirror neurons for smiling will
become active, whether or not you
are in a good mood.
According to a number of doctors
and psychologists, there are four
of the most popular scientifi c ways to
be happy is smiling, singing, sweating
and soothing. Smiling can lift
your mood through a phenomenon
known as the facial feedback hypothesis.
Th ere is evidence that a primitive
sensory organ in the inner ear,
the sacculus, could maybe react to
music. It triggers response in the hypothalamus
that creates a pleasurable
sensation. Sweating and exercising
buff ers the brain from stressful situations
and new studies suggest that it
promotes the growth of new neurons
that are less reactive to stress. To distress
aft er a long day, soothe yourself;
replay a good memory that evokes
feelings of comfort.
Even if your goal of newly selfinduced
happiness does not pan out
as planned, you will still experience
personal growth and that is the most
valuable goal. If it is good, it is great;
if it is bad, it is experience. Everything
happens for a reason and it will
all work out in the end; if it does not
work out, it is not the end.
Th e road to happiness is not
supposed to be easy. We think that
happiness should come with little
or no work involved. Our natural
tendency says life is about us. If we
get this and that, we will be happy,
because aft er all that is what the
world teaches us. Something we
were not told though is that serving
others, actually makes us happier
than serving ourselves all of
the time.
“I think the reason why it is so
hard to put others before ourselves
is because we are always thinking
about us, and what we want. When
we are thinking about ourselves
there is no room to think about
others,” said sophomore Jackie
Flores.
It is obvious in the world today
something is missing. Either we as
people are doing something wrong,
or we have missed the whole point
of life. Happiness is like a myth
these days because it is so hard to
fi nd, and being selfi sh does not
help at all, in fact it creates misery.
Serving others is very hard. It
is easy to do it when it is conve-
-Jackie Flores
Serving Others
nient, but to truly go out of the way
to help someone takes guts, and a
huge heart.
“Being a true servant is when
your needs are no longer your top
priority, and the needs of others is
your top focus,” said Teen Leadership
teacher John Jones.
How we change is up to us but,
in order to be a happier person, old
ways have to go. Volunteering to
help others is something that will
defi nitely make us happier. It does
not matter if it is direct, anonymous,
spontaneous or planned.
Just seeing someone else’s day
made not only changes something
inside us, but makes our world a
better place. Th e most important
thing to remember is that helping
others and practicing loving kindness
towards others takes us out
of our daily ‘me’ zone and gets us
thinking about other people.
“It’s hard to serve others with
love, but that’s why transformation
is the key to it all. Once you
get to the point in life where serving
others is your top priority, you
will then begin to see why it is truly
better to give then to receive,” said
Jones.
Helping others does not necessarily
have to consist of something
big; it can be little things such as
opening a door for a stranger, to
buying someone lunch. Helping is
helping, and for all we know, one
little thing could change the world
20 years from now because of a
chain reaction started just simply
from lending a hand to someone in
need.
“Whenever I help someone
out I feel accomplished. Not only
does it build up my character, it
also gives me confi dence I never
knew I had. To know that I helped
someone out just makes me happy,
and the amazing part about it is
that I didn’t have to serve myself to
fi nd that happiness ,” said Flores.
Helen Keller once said, ‘Happiness
cannot come from without.
It must come from within. It
is not what we see and touch or
that which others do for us which
makes us happy; it is that which we
think and feel and do, fi rst for the
other fellow and then for ourselves.’
Th e road to happiness does not always
come easy, and it is not always
going to be convenient, but it will
always be worth it in the end. How
we get to the end of the road is up
to us, but one tip of advice is to get
out of the way, and let the journey
begin.
Stress is something every student
will experience during their high school
career. Not only does it aff ect school
work, but it can also aff ect the way a person
acts around other people. It can be
frustrating and students will fi nd themselves
feeling overwhelmed with diff erent
emotions causing them to become
upset very easily. However, sometimes
stress can be helpful. It can be motivation
for a person to do their best and
perform well under pressure. It is something
that helps keep the brain alert and
aware of what is going on around them.
“Th e stress response is critical during
emergency situations, like when a
driver has to slam on the brakes to avoid
an accident. It can be activated in milder
form like getting ready for a big date
or before taking an exam. A little of this
type of stress keeps us on our toes and
gets us ready to rise to the challenge. So
in cases like these stress can be a good
thing,” said Mayde Creeks Nurse Rosalinda
Hobbs.
No matter what, in a student’s every
day there will be something that causes
them to become frustrated or upset. Obviously
this is what causes stress. Many
Dealing with Stress
wish there were more hours in a day to
complete errands or family responsibilities.
Maybe there is not enough time to
relax and sit down for a little while. But
all that can easily be solved. Stress is
something that takes over the brain and
tells the body to keep going even if there
is no energy left . Managing this feeling
is all about taking charge. Taking charge
means balancing out the goals in a person’s
life. Having time for school work,
relationships and family is extremely
important in all students’ lives.
“No one is immune to stress. We
see it daily in adults and oft en teenagers.
I see it here at MCHS a lot. People can
cope with their stress by building resilience
and thinking of setbacks or problems
as a temporary thing that can be
solved. It is important to build a strong
relationship with family and friends and
when you are stressed, ask for help,” said
Hobbs.
Healthy ways to cope with stress are
not rare at all. Writing down thoughts
and emotions about what is going on
throughout the day is an easy way for
one to express feelings that they have
been bottling up inside. Going on walks
with a friend or even a pet can take a
person’s mind off of a stressful situation.
5
RAMPAGE
Th ere are a lot of unhealthy ways that
many people tend to choose, but in the
long run those can damage their lives
for good. Th ings like smoking, drinking,
overeating and under eating or
withdrawal from activities with friends
and family can just add more stress on a
person instead of taking it away.
“Doing things like overscheduling
yourself is what causes stress. Nobody
is perfect and don’t expect perfection
from others. If you need help on something
like school work ask for it. It is important
to get a good night’s sleep and
to relax. Put activities in your schedule
that are calming and pleasurable. Reading
a good book, spending time with
your pet or taking a relaxing bath are
all things that can help with stress,” said
Hobbs.
Bottled up stress oft en comes out
in explosions. It is important to make
alone time and to fi nd a hobby that is
enjoyable. Stress is a natural thing that
humans witness every day. Even an infant
crying can feel stress because they
are trying to verbalize discomfort. All
changes require adaptation, whether
they are good or bad. Th e way a person
copes with stress determines how confi
dent, mature and wise they really are.
Perfect Mayde Memories
Josh Broskay (12)
Wrestling in high school
really made it be er for me.
The highlight through it all
though was having one of the
best records at the end of my
fi rst full season.
Taylor Vuong (12)
The best thing about high
school for me was the overall
experience. It’s the awkward
phase of being a kid and
learning to grow up, and
how to be on your own. It’s
interes ng to watch people
mature from fi rst grade or
even from freshman year.
Ariel Williams (11)
I’d say that mee ng new
people, spending me with
friends and making new
rela onships is a great thing
about high school. Specifi -
cally though, being on varsity
soccer and becoming a be er
player every year is awesome.
Jesus Pizano (11)
What I really liked about high
school so far was playing
for band at my fi rst football
game. It was all the way in
San Antonio, we road Coach
there and marched in the
Alamo Dome in San Antonio.
I was a freshman at the me,
and being my fi rst game, it
opened my eyes and showed
me that band was going to be
fun.
Taylor Givens (10)
My favorite thing about high
school was the friends, having
the feeling of gradua on
being so close, and ge ng so
many chances to make great
memories.
Alex Zuniga (10)
It’d have to be ge ng 8 th in
FFA and winning $1200 for
my goat. I had a goat named
Hercules, and it was the
second heaviest goat in the
district.
Nicholas Hanson (10)
My favorite thing about
high school was mee ng my
girlfriend Taylor Givens… and
football.
Zac Barker (11)
Being on varsity football is
the best thing about high
school so far because it’s a
really good experience. A er
the Cy Springs win, everyone
was really pumped for season
Rayne Jennings (12)
The best thing about high
school was learning how
important my friends are to
me. We are like family and if
one of us is ever struggling,
we aren’t afraid to help one
another. Four years of school
together taught us that our
friendship is some mes the
only thing that keeps us
going.
Mark Jablinski (12)
My favorite thing that happened
this year was hands
down dressing up as Thor for
superhero day during homecoming
week. For high school
in general, I’d say my favorite
thing was partying at football
games. I was in marching
band, and we would
always dance while drum line
jammed out.
and it was a good feeling. Yve e Salas (11)
Kate Johnson (9)
Mee ng people from other
schools like Mayde Creek
Junior High was really cool,
and being nominated for the
Tommy Tunes award for best
scenic design was a really
great experience.
Joseph Cluiss (9)
My favorite memory in high
school would be walking into
high school for the fi rst me
and seeing how old everyone
was. I was at the top in
8 th and now I’m back at the
bo om. It was an interes ng
memory.
Serenity Hill (10)
It’d have to be volleyball, it
was a very good season but
overall it was fun. We beat
Cinco for the fi rst me in
10 years and it was a home
game, so that was thrilling.
Simon Amaya (9)
My favorite moment in high
school was coming to school
on TAKS week and fi nding
out that I didn’t have to do
any work. It was refreshing
because we’ve been so busy
for STAAR tes ng.
Just the freedom of high
school is what makes it so
great. Doing what you want,
and mee ng new people is
great. And the Teen Leadership
ropes course really was
too. It was a highlight of this
year.
Amanda Sprague (9)
My favorite thing that happened
so far was making the
JV cheerleading team. It was
a lot of work staying a er
school and ge ng the cheers
and dances down, but it all
paid off when I made it.

Quizno’s Pepperoni Prime
Rib
Mmmmm… Toasty is right!
Th e Pepperoni Prime Rib has
prime rib, all-natural mozzarella,
covered in sautéed onions
and then drenched in mild peppercorn
sauce. All together the
fl avors are just right. Th e genius
chef who created this sandwich
must be commended and maybe,
just maybe should be sitting on
a throne of royalty. Th e toasted
sandwich has meaty taste which
is amazing if the consumer is a
meat-lover. With this sandwich,
lettuce, tomato and olives can
be added to make the sandwich
a bit healthier for only $ 5.00.
The Dark Knight
Rises
Th e Dark Knight Rises is the latest
Batman movie with two familiar villains,
Bane and Catwoman. Th is movie
takes place in Gotham city where Batman,
played by Christian Bale, was said to be
done with ‘Th e Batman’ and the crime
rates increased in his absence. Batman decides
to come back due to the crime rates
and to defeat its new leader, Bane, played
by Tom Hardy. Batman gets a new sidekick,
Catwoman played by Anne Hathaway,
who helps Batman fi ght crime throughout
the movie. Th is fi lm comes out on July 20.
When someone passes Jason’s
Deli they might as well be committing
a crime because not eating
the California Club is like committing
treason. Th e sandwich
has some of the most amazing
ingredients ever, toasted croissant
with turkey breast, bacon, Swiss,
tomato, organic fi eld greens,
mayo and guacamole. If California
has sandwiches like that, then
no wonder it is overpopulated.
Th e organic fi eld green has a
nice fresh taste to the guacamole
that is slathered upon the turkey
breast. Th e California Club has a
very mellow taste, but is then delectable
when the Swiss and bacon
combine. Th e best thing about it
would be the price, which is $6.99.
On July 1, one of the biggest concerts
in town, Vans Warped Town Tour,
comes to Houston to rock out. Th e best
rock bands from around the world come
here together to perform their best songs
known throughout the world. Th is amazing
concert includes Taking Back Sunday,
All Time Low, We Th e Kings, and
many more. Th e prices range from $53
to $163 depending what row and if you
want to have chairs to sit on. Th e concert
sometimes has free giveaways and
prizes, but the concert is outside at Reliant
Stadium so it will most likely be hot.
Th e Men in Black 3 is the latest Men
in Black movie starring the same actors as
in the past, Will Smith , Tommy Lee Jones,
but there is a little twist to the new Men in
Black. Josh Brolin who plays Agent K when
he was younger, (Tommy Lee Jones) meets
Will Smith, Agent J, when Agent J travels
back in time to stop an alien from assassinating
his friend Agent K. Men in Black
will hit theaters everywhere on June 25.
Panera Bread’s Smoked
Turkey Breast
Panera Bread is like that one
little shop in the corner of a small
and quaint town that has the
most delicious handmade food
anybody can ever imagine. Th e
Smoked Turkey Breast may not
be the greasy, oil-dripping sandwich
most people love, but it is
the healthy snack for aft er school
studying. Th is sandwich has
smoked turkey layered on country
white bread that is then topped off
with fresh tomatoes, red onions,
green leaf lettuce and grazed with
salt and black pepper. Th e best
taste the sandwich has is the tangy
taste that comes from the country
miche sauce. Th is sandwich
also comes with a pickle spear
when purchased for only $6.50.
Aft er a long day at school people
need to relax so what better
way to relax than to eat? Subway
is known for their logo “Eat fresh”
and that one guy that lost a lot
of weight. In the sandwich pepperoni
and salami is laid against
the Italian white bread and pepper
jack cheese. Th e delicacy is
then toasted and topped off with
lettuce, olives and tomatoes. Th e
sandwich is fi nished off with a
hint of pure olive oil and shut
to perfection. Th e sandwich is a
delight to eat, both meats battle
for the attention of the tongue
palettes. Th e vegetables complement
each other when mixed
with the pepper jack cheese.
Th is sandwich is only $5.00.
most likely stay in theaters for a while
due to the amount of people being hyped
to be killed, but falls in love with her and
winds up being her protector in a quest
to kill the Evil Queen, Charlize Th eron.
To Rome with Love is the latest
Woody Allen movie. Allen is a director
that people have been going crazy over.
To Rome with Love is about a number of
people in Italy, some American, some Italian,
some residents, some visitors and the
romances and adventures they get into.
Th is fi lm stars Ellen Page, Woody Allen,
Jesse Eisenberg and Penélope Cruz.
Lenny knows how to make a
good sandwich. Th e Classic Sub is
a perfect mix of provolone, ham
and capicola. Capicola is a traditional
cold cut made from pork
shoulder or neck and it is great.
Th e sandwich is an actual ‘cold
cut’ sandwich which means there
was no toaster to make it toasty
warm, but nonetheless the meat
rescued the sandwich from being
boring. Th e sandwich is so much
better with onions, lettuce, tomato,
mayo, and drizzled with light
oil, salt and pepper. Th ere are not
many of Lenny’s restaurants in
By simply trying to be the
best he could in all aspects of his
life, Van Dyke succeeded. Being
involved in many things kept Van
Dyke busy, yet he still managed to
fi nd time for his studies.
“I am a part of the school
band, I play golf and I am on the
LEAD Team at Second Baptist. I
am also in National Honor Society
which has high demands for
volunteer work. I think it is important
to be involved in things
other than school work,” said Van
Dyke.
With all the things in his life,
one would think it is hard to prioritize.
For Van Dyke, keeping
what was most important to him
at the top of his priority list was
not a problem.
“Band gets all my time, aft er
my family and girlfriend, Corrie
Reese. I want to major in saxophone
performance and either
become a college sax professor
or play in the military band,” said
Van Dyke.
Like with all good success
stories, there were challenges
throughout Van Dyke’s high
school career. Besides his busy
schedule, stress from school and
other responsibilities, Van Dyke
tells of some of the hardest parts
of his four years in high school.
“Managing my time was
a very big challenge for me
throughout high school. I would
lose track of time and study or
practice until 2 a.m. Of course
I was miserable the whole next
day which made it harder than
normal to fi t in everything. I just
made everything work with a little
eff ort,” said Van Dyke.
Every successful person has
many supportive people behind
him. Although Van Dyke went
through many things no one
should have to go through, he still
kept a smile on his face with the
help from his family and friends.
“My mom and girlfriend are
so great about supporting me in
everything I do and I know my
dad would be extremely proud
of me,” said Van Dyke. “I feel so
honored and privileged to be
valedictorian and I am forever
grateful for everyone who helped
me get here.”
RAMPAGE Senior Issue Salutatorian
Th roughout the four years
students spend in high school,
there are a few who stand out and
exceed the goal of just graduating.
One of these students who
has worked hard throughout his
high school career making all A’s
in every class and maintaining a
high GPA is senior Mark Jablinski,
the class of 2012’s salutatorian.
He has put in time and eff ort into
all of his classes to achieve the
second highest GPA in his class.
Jablinski will have the privilege of
giving a speech where he will talk
about the past and the outlook towards
the future.
“I I was really surprised that I
had become the salutatorian. I’ve
worked very hard to get here. I’ve
taken a lot of AP classes. I did almost
all my homework and I have
gotten all A’s. I’ve never had a B
for a semester grade,” said Jablinski.
Jablinski plans
to follow his high
school career by
attending Baylor
University.
He will study
to be a mechanical
engineer,
which
entails e ntail s
m a n y
hours h ours
of studying
and
learning
l earning
about physics and science.
Th e engineering
fi eld will require
an understanding of
mechanics, kinematics,thermodynamics
and much
more. Mechanical
engineers
use these subjects
to design
plants, industrial
equipment and
machinery like
aircraft , medical
devices and
robotics in a
way that is costeffi
cient and
environmentally safe.
“I have a received a full tuition
scholarship so I’ll only have
to pay for the dorm and books.
My parents are really proud of me,
but I’m still nervous not knowing
what I’ll be getting myself into. I
know it will be good, and I’ll get
to come back to Houston on holiday
weekends, which is a big plus
for me,” said Jablinski.
Jablinski has taken part in
extracurricular activities such as
newspaper and band. He was a
witty, co-managing editor who
wrote with a personality that
anyone could not help smiling
at. He has been a member of the
Ram band for four
years now and
has also been
a part of AcademicChallenge,
NHS and
French NHS.
“I’ve been playing the bassoon
for a long time, since way
back in the beginner band at
Mayde Creek Junior High. I really
like it because it has the biggest
pitch of range of any woodwind
instrument,” said Jablinski.
Jablinski has played in the
band since he was in the 6th
grade. He made the All-State
Symphony in eleventh and twelft h
grade, winning fi rst chair in the
entire state of Texas as a senior.
Jablinski has also played in the
pit orchestra for MCHS’ musical
productions Beauty and the Beast
and My Fair Lady.
With all the time spent pre-
paring for graduation, gradua Jablinski
still has time to take tak part in hob-
bies that he loves such s as playing
the piano and watching watc his favor-
ite movies. Although Althou he spends
much time getting ready for col-
lege, Jablinski still
fi nds the time
to do the things he loves.
“I love to read, rea watch mov-
ies and play video
games. I think
I like movies so
much because
they’re so luxuri luxurious. You sit,
watch and listen fo for hours. My fa-
vorite movie is I RRobot
with Will
Smith. I also like to t play piano in
the evenings becau because it’s very re-
laxing to me,” said Jablinski.
Jablinski has aalso
taken part
in being the senior seni class secre-
tary. He has many
things that he
has accomplished
over his high
school career. Dur During his junior
year, Jablinski went wen to state for
UIL Headline Writ Writing, which few
achieve. He will continue co his life
completing goals and preparing
himself for a great
future.
“In “In ten years from now, I
see myself as a 28 28-year old with
a more profession professional haircut than
I have now. I hope
to have a job
at an engineering
or consulting
fi fi rm and a pleasan pleasant apartment in
town. I am very grateful g to have
received my acad academic scholarships
ships and I am ha happy that I will
get get to speak at gr graduation,” said
Jablinski.
Many teens consider going
cases they feel like it is their duty.
Aft er one turns 18 they can either
Going into the Military
school or wait and fi nish college
fi rst. Either way they are all still
given good benefi ts.
“I decided to join the Marines
because I wanted to be a
part of something bigger than
myself. All of my friends are just
going to college aft er high school,
but I wanted to be diff erent so
I’m going into the Marine
Corps instead,” said senior
Simon Th ai.
As a Marine they
serve and their service
will speak for itself, and
the actions made will be
felt throughout the nation.
Th ere are many threats
facing the world today and
they are just as dangerous
as they are unpredictable.
Th e Marines stand with a
purpose and with honor
and they fi ght to protect
the nation and try to make
the world a better and
safer place. Marine offi cers
are supported by the Marine
Corps brotherhood,
and during active service
the offi cer and his/her
family are given many resources.
Financial support
like compensation at the
standard armed forces pay
rate, regular cost of living
pay increases and veteran aff airs.
Th ey also receive family healthcare
and insurance, housing and
facilities, post-graduate education
and travel.
“ROTC was a major infl uence
on my decision to join, I learned
about the many opportunities I
would have” said Th ai. “My parents
were really apprehensive at
fi rst, but then I explained all the
college opportunities and it took
some encouragement. Aft er a
while they became ecstatic with
my choice. My biggest fear at the
moment is boot camp because of
the drill instructors.”
One of the many worries of
enlisting in the military is being
scared of what could potentially
happen to the soldier. Th ere are
so many things that could go
wrong on the battle fi eld, a serious
injury or even death. Yet, everyone
that will enlist already knows
the dangers and are ready to face
their fears.
“My parents were extremely
proud of my decision to join;
my dad was in the Marine Corps
when he was young. My ROTC
captain inspired me to join and
do what I wanted, my parents and
I are very excited,” said senior Corina
Women are From Venus, Men are From Mars
Girls by
Boys
Day 1. Her boyfriend dumped her. Cue the Facebook drama. Her new
‘Single’ status earns ‘likes’ from guys who think that she’s cute, (which
boosts her sad ego) and comments from her sympathetic friends.
“Message me!! What happened? :(“
“Do I have to beat anyone up?”
Just about any girl suff ering from break up will jump at the chance to
post things like “I don’t need him anyways! Single life!” or “Hook me up!
Gonna party! ;)”
But the majority of the time, she’s secretly very hurt, but wants to show
everyone (especially her now ex) that she’s gonna be just fi ne. (Aft er
many Nicholas Sparks movie marathons, crying into her pillow pet, and
eating tons of ice cream that is).
She also hopes that statuses such as these will evoke pain and/or jealousy
from her ex, hoping that he’s hurt by her being so ok, regardless of their
tragic breakup.
Week 1-2: She opens up to her closest friends, but puts up a front around
everyone else by dressing especially nice for a while aft er and strutting
around like the pieces of her heart aren’t rattling about in her chest. But
seeing him always puts a bad feeling in her gut when memories of being
with him fl ood her thoughts. If she sees him talking to another girl, she
has to physically hold herself back from charging forward in ex-girlfriend
rage, keeping her prettied lips zipped. Instead, she fl ips her hair back,
puts her nose in the air, and acts like she’s not capable of tossing the
entire school building far, far away at that moment.
She has to resist the urge to text him things like “I miss you,” because that
shows sign of weakness. Her ‘I’m ok’ façade has to remain eff ective.
If another guy talks to her, she is overly animated and excited in her responses,
hoping someone sees, hoping her EX sees, or that word that she’s
talking with a new hottie will get to him and inevitably hurt his already
sore feelings.
Aft er the fi rst month: She’s departed with any mementos, selling them on
websites like Neverlikeditanyway.com (where you can sell past boyfriends
and girlfriends things if you fi nd them taking up space) or she’s stowed
them away for memory reasons.
She fi nds that her jealousy towards other girls isn’t quite as strong and
that her urges to beg for him to come back don’t come up as oft en. Th e
Facebook statuses aren’t as frequent, either. She’s getting used to the spot
that says ‘Single’ and is starting to accept single life. Th e pain isn’t completely
gone. Th e ice cream is just fi nally taking eff ect.
But everyone knows at that point that if he asked for her to be his girlfriend
again, she’d say yes. She denies this, but knows deep down that it’s
true.
If he gets a new girlfriend: Every part of her that started healing is once
again hurt, and the jealousy waves are back. If asked about his new girlfriend,
she rolls her eyes and snubs “I don’t care what he does.” But she
does care. And she sits at her computer, scrolling through the new girl’s
Facebook, comparing herself and scoffi ng, “Please. I’m so much better
than her.”
Aft er 3 months: She has almost moved on. She’s learned to not obsess
over the break up and doesn’t try to hurt him indirectly anymore. She
uses it as a lesson and learns from her little high school fl ing, realizing
that she was immature for going crazy about it in the fi rst place. She may
even decide they can still be friends if she is ready, and then she goes
along with her happy little life.
RAMPAGE
Day 1: He knows it’s gonna be hard. He knows his friends are gonna expect
him to act macho through it all, but he doesn’t quite know if he’s prepared
for that yet. Break ups for a guy are always a tough process which
take him awhile to prepare for. Dumping a girl over text makes him a
jerk, but doing it in person makes it 100 times harder in that if she so
much as said “Can we try to work things out?” and looked up at him with
those tearful, glassy, big eyes, he’d crumble and they’d stay together. But
once it’s done with, and he’s managed to leave her, he embarks on a rollercoaster
ride of emotions that he has to keep secret. Aft er the breakup
and aft er much unhappy contemplation, he decides that breaking up with
her was the best thing that has ever happened to him and he proceeds to
party. He can start enjoying the things he couldn’t do while tied down to
his now ex-girlfriend, like playing video games till dawn without worrying
about plans that he might sleep through on accident. Now he doesn’t
have to worry about remembering diff erent dates and doesn’t have to
remember to call before he goes to bed and when he wakes up.
He can watch action fi lms and not have to sit through another romantic
comedy.
He tries to ignore the feelings of sadness that seep through his blood like
poison when he sees her statuses of how she’s already moved on. When
his bros call him to ask how things are, he simply snubs, “I’m better off
without her.”
Week 1-2 : He takes detours so he doesn’t have to see her at school. Seeing
her all dolled up will make him susceptible to pouty feelings. Men
don’t pout. He even acts like everything is ok around his closest friends,
and manages to convince himself that he truly is perfectly fi ne with the
breakup. He’d go as far to say that he truly is completely over her. If she
texts him, he scoff s and ignores it. Even if something in the far corners of
his mind is excited to see her name light up on his phone.
He parties with his friends, and fl irts with many other girls, feeling ‘free.’
When he fi nds out that she knows of his new party ways, he feels somewhat
accomplished. Her wanting him back is a confi dence boost. But,
again, when he does in fact catch wind of her talking to another guy, that
little something in the back of his mind is jealous.
To get rid of these feelings, he continues with the things he considers
‘luxury’ now that he’s single.
Aft er the fi rst month: He feels like a jerk for doing what he did in the fi rst
couple of weeks of single life. He knows it hurt her and that makes him
sad. She doesn’t text him anymore and that makes him panic. He wishes
he didn’t fl irt with those other girls, and every time he gets a text, he
whips his phone from his night stand and stares into the fl uorescent light,
hoping that it’s her name fl ashing on the screen. When he sees that it’s
“Brunette from bro’s party”, he sighs, hoping that her fl irtatious hello will
make him feel better.
It doesn’t. It makes him feel worse.
If she gets a new boyfriend: Th e little something in the back of his head
is now a huge something, telling him that he’s a complete idiot for letting
her go. He sees her profi le picture. She’s plastered on her new guy like a
wet towel, and looks genuinely happy. He then compares himself to the
guy, and no matter what, the now sappy sad part of him thinks the other
guy is better than him in every way you look at it, and the fact that she’s
happy with this new Adonis God-like fi gure breaks his heart. She was
happy with him like that once.
Aft er three months: He feels worse than ever. It’s all fi nally hitting him
that she’s gone. Everything reminds him of her. Nazi Zombies remind
him of her pestering that ‘all he cares about is videogames!’ He stares at
old pictures, remembering when they were together. He ruefully stows
them away, putting off trashing them till later. And while she’s moved on,
he realizes that he wants her back but it’s too late.
“I would donate some to
my friend’s church because
they can’t aff ord one of
their own. I would then donate
some to my daddy’s
gym and a li le bit has to
support me, right? I have
to eat!”
Briana Donis, 10 “I would donate it to help
fi nd a cure for cancer, and
then of course I’d use some
of it for myself.”
Jesus Reyes, 10
