MEEt thE DIRECtORS A renowned American tenor, John Aler is one of the most acclaimed and admired singers on the international stage. A consummate artist, he has been a frequent performer with such orchestras as the New York Philharmonic, the Cleveland and Philadelphia Orchestras, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the symphony orchestras of Boston, Chicago and San Francisco. He has sung in Europe with the Berlin Philharmonic, Leipzig Gewandhaus, Orchestre Nationale de France, and the BBC Symphony, among many others, appearing with the world’s most respected conductors, including James Conlon, Daniel Barenboim, Pierre Boulez, Kurt Masur, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Simon Rattle, Michael Tilson Thomas, Herbert Blomstedt, and Leonard Slatkin, to name a few. He has performed at the major opera houses of the world, including the Royal Opera Covent Garden, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Vienna, Munich, Salzburg, Hamburg, Geneva, Madrid, and Brussels, as well as the New York City Opera, the Washington Opera, and Santa Fe. He is a regular performer at the major American summer festivals, including Ravinia, Aspen, Chautauqua, Newport, and Grant Park. Mr. Aler has an extensive concert repertoire and is featured on three Grammy Award-winning recordings: in the role of Jupiter in an all-star recording of Handel’s Semele with John Nelson and the English chamber Orchestra for DGG, which won “Best Opera Recording;” Bartok’s Cantata Profana with Pierre Boulez and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, also on DGG, which won “Best Classical Album;” and the Berlioz Requiem with the Atlanta Symphony on Telarc, which won for “Best Vocal Soloist.” A native of Baltimore, John Aler is an alumnus of the Catholic University in Washington, DC and the Juilliard School. Internationally acclaimed mezzo-soprano and music educator, PAtriciA Miller, is a graduate of Boston University, the New England Conservatory, and as a Fulbright Scholar, received her Artists’ Diploma in Performance from the Accademia di Santa cecilia in Rome. Ms. Miller has also completed advanced vocal studies at the International Schubert Institute in Baden-bei-Wein, Austria and at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. Ms. Miller has appeared with leading opera companies and orchestras, and in concert and recitals, throughout Europe, North and South America, Canada, Australia, Russia and Japan. Highlights from her extensive performance career include concert performances at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center and the title role of Carmen with the New York City Opera. Miller is also a highly respected Voice teacher and master class clinician. She has served as professor on the faculties of the University of Missouri, Oberlin Conservatory and George Mason University. She is the recipeint of numerous awards, including the Soujourner Truth Award from African-American Studies and Women’s Studies at George Mason University, Who’s Who among American Teachers, the Teacher of the year Award from the Northern Virginia Opera Guild (2010) and the Excellence in Teaching Award from the Lambda Sigma Honor Society (2011). Miller has been a guest artist teacher at conservatories, universities and international music festivals in Italy, Russia, Ukraine, Germany, France and Korea. She has been invited to Leipzig, Germany and Beijing, China as a visiting guest professor in 2012. Professor Miller was awarded the title of “University Professor” by the Board of Visitors, the highest rank given to faculty members at George Mason University. MAureen codelkA, Opera Stage Director, is a former Associate Professor in the B.T. Rome School of Music at the Catholic University of America and founder and former director of the Music Theatre program. She also served as director of the CUA Singers and musical director/conductor of most musicals presented at the University and many of
the opera productions as well. For many years, Ms. Codelka was also assistant director and conductor of both the University Chorus and Concert Choir’s performances, including handel’s Messiah, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Honegger’s King David, Rutter’s Gloria, Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, Mahler’s Second and Eighth Symphonies, Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius, Britten’s St. Nicholas (EWtN-tV), Rachmaninoff’s Bells (in Russian), Kodaly’s Missa Brevis, Durufle’s Requiem and many others (choral preparation). In addition, she has been chorus director and off-stage conductor for the Summer Opera Theatre Company in D.C. She prepared the school’s A Cappella Choir for performances and recordings of Naughty Marietta and Rose Marie for the Smithsonian Institution and has directed several student groups on Department of Defense overseas tours of Europe, the Caribbean, Asia and the Pacific. As a director, she has staged A Little Night Music, The Barber of Seville, Madama Butterfly, Trouble in Tahiti, The Old Maid and The Thief, Gianni Schicchi, Suor Angelica and others. She is currently an Adjunct Professor and Opera Director in George Mason University’s School of Music, and music director/conductor at Toby’s Dinner Theatre in Columbia and Baltimore. thoMAs reilly is an active vocal coach/pianist in the Washington area. Locally, his operatic career has included working as an Assistant Conductor and Chorus Master with the Washington Opera, Washington Concert Opera, Wolf Trap Opera, and Summer Opera Theater. He served as the principal coach/pianist for the opera program at the Brevard Music Center in Brevard, North Carolina for several summers. In Caracas, Venezuela, he served on the faculty of the Caracas Opera Center as a vocal coach and chorus master and was a member of the musical staffs of both the Opera Metropolitana and the Opera de Caracas. On the recital stage, he has partnered countless singers in venues such as the Kennedy Center, the Phillips Gallery of Art, the Toronto Center for the Arts, the Clinton Presidential Library, the National Gallery of Art, and the White House. He is a former faculty member of the Rome School of Music at the Catholic University of America, and has served on the faculty and as the director of the vocal program at the Amalfi Coast Music Festival. Jihae Lim (accompanist), a student of Dr. Linda Apple Monson, is currently pursuing an artist certificate in Piano Performance and serving as an accompanist for the vocal department at George Mason University. She also graduated with her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Music from George Mason University in 2007 and 2009. A native of Seoul, Korea, Lim is the grateful recipient of a Friends of Music Scholarship award. She was the winner of the 2007 GMU Concerto Competition and performed as a soloist with the GMU Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Professor Anthony Maiello. In December 2010, Lim performed Piano Concerto No. 13, K. 415 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart with the Mason Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Dennis Layendecker. Lim was chosen to perform in piano master classes presented by Awadagin Pratt, Leon Bates, Jeffrey Siegel, and Ruskin Cooper. In addition, she has been chosen to perform as solo pianist in the GMU All-Steinway School Dedication Concert, Mason’s Jean Carrington Cook Piano Scholarship Recitals, and GMU Honors Recitals. She has also been selected to perform as solo pianist for the Fairfax Spotlight on the Arts Scholarship Concerts at Old Town Hall. In addition, she served as pianist for various theater productions, including Scrooge and Gypsy at the Little Theatre of Alexandria and Mason’s theater production of James Joyce’s The Dead. Lim serves as pianist for the Korean Blissful Presbyterian Church in Fairfax, Virginia, and she previously served as the accompanist for the youth choirs at Springfield United Methodist Church. Lim maintains a private piano studio and she also teaches for the Potomac Arts Academy.
