Horn Concerto No. 1 in E-Flat Richard Strauss
I. Allegro Trans. Charles Yeago
Though mostly known for his operas and symphonic poems, Richard Strauss contributed to the
repertoire of the natural horn early in his career with Concerto for Horn and Orchestra No. 1. This
work, composed in 1882-3, received its world premiere on 4 March 1885 a few months prior to
Strauss’s 21st birthday. Though some criticized the work as having a, “feeble lack of melody,” it has
become a standard in the repertoire of horn virtuosos. Originally written for natural horn, this work
gives the virtuosic player opportunity to display flexibility in range, dynamic, and technical facility.
Mr. Franz Strauss, Royal Bavarian Chamber Musician and Richard Strauss’s father, was considered
the greatest horn virtuoso of his time. In a fitting tribute, Richard Strauss dedicates this concerto to
his father, Franz Strauss.
The Canterbury Chorale Jan Van der Roost
The Canterbury Chorale was composed in 1991 by Belgian composer Jan Van der Roost (b. 1956) for
Robert Leveugle and the Brass Band Midden Brabant (Belgium). Inspired by the beautiful cathedral
in the English city of Canterbury, Van der Roost rescored the work for symphonic wind band in
an effort to emulate the grandeur of an organ. In describing the work, the composer exclaimed,
“Besides solo phrases for several instruments, there are some massive tutti passages making the wind
orchestra sound like a majestic organ.” Van der Roost treats the wind band as a chorus, developing
a simple, sing-able melody into a lovely, instrumental chorale.
~Adam K. Hilkert
The Witch and the Saint Steven Reineke
American composer Steven Reineke (b. 1970) composed The Witch and the Saint in 2004 for the
Youth Brass Orchestra of Ellwangen, Germany. A programmatic tone poem, the work musically
depicts the German story by Ulrike Scheikert of two twin sisters born in 1588. During the medieval
period, the birth of twins was considered a bad omen, and both developed the sense of second sight,
or the ability to predict future events. The sisters were separated. One sister, Helena, was sent to a
convent and became revered as a saint, while the other, Sibylla, was regarded as a witch. Listen as the
work follows the life journey of the sisters: their birth, separation, reunion, and demise.
~Adam K. Hilkert
Rest Frank Ticheli
Frank Ticheli’s Rest is an arrangement of his 1999 choral piece There Will Be Rest. The former was
commissioned in memory of Elling Mikkelson, and the latter by the Pacific Chorale in memory of
their conductor, John Alexander. Ticheli found inspiration for these occasions in the beautiful words
of poet Sarah Teasdale (1884-1933):
There will be rest, and sure stars shining
Over the roof-tops crowned with snow,
A reign of rest, serene forgetting,
The music of stillness, holy and low.
I will make this world of my devising
Out of a dream in my lonely mind,
I shall find the crystal of peace; and above me,
Stars I shall find.
Teasdale endured poor health for the majority of her life and tragically ended it by committing
suicide. However, she did experience some happiness; in 1918, she won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry
and the Poetry Society of America prize. Perhaps this poem describes a place that Teasdale visited in
her imagination in search of the comforts she lacked in reality.
According to Ticheli, the biggest challenge Rest poses to the wind band is to convey the same
meaning that a choir would with There Will Be Rest. Of course, the instrumentalists cannot literally
sing the words of the poem. However, attentive audience members will notice that the music’s
rhythmic cadence is very much like that of natural speech. Therefore, it is as if the text is present,
just below the surface. With this, Ticheli creates the opportunity for the ensemble to give the music
even more meaning. As so many composers have discovered, the wind band has almost infinite
expressive potential due to the sheer number of different instruments. Ticheli masterfully combines
and manipulates the many distinct voices to change the music’s character over the course of the
piece.
Rest is organized A A’ B A” coda. Ticheli demonstrates his mastery of word-painting throughout the
piece, because the contour, volume, instrumentation, and movement of the music truly illustrate
Teasdale’s text. Each time the principal theme returns, the voicing changes so that one feels a definite
sense of progress. The B section is characterized by trepidation and the words “I will make this world

of my devising,” as if uncertain whether it is possible. However, by the A” section hope is restored
and the melody soars with the word “above.” Finally, the coda section wordlessly sings “stars I shall
find” as the notes peacefully fade away.
Ticheli urges those who encounter his piece not to shy away from emotion. Music is very personal
to all of us, therefore each of us on stage and in the audience will interpret and appreciate Rest in a
unique way. We perform this in the hope that Rest’s tenderness and wish for serenity is universal.
~Lisette Armstrong
Chorale and Shaker Dance John Zdechlik
Since its premiere at the Music Educators National Conference in 1972, John Zdechlik’s Chorale
and Shaker Dance has earned a place among the standard works of wind literature. The piece is
respected and enjoyed not only for its use as a teaching tool for maturing ensembles, but for its
creative handling of a familiar melody. Zdechlik began composing the work of his own accord,
but after local high school and community band director Earl Benson heard it in its early stages,
he commissioned the piece. When asked about his compositional technique, Zdechlik shared with
me that he first wrote a chorale and later decided that it would work well in conjunction with
the “Simple Gifts” melody. Then, he used the challenge of interweaving the two melodies as his
compositional process. He applied countless musical inspirations to his piece, such as the work and
techniques of Beethoven, William Schuman, Vincent Persichetti, and his old jazz favorites.
Zdechlik divides the work into four main sections, beginning with an original chorale stated in
juxtaposing woodwind and brass voices. The second section introduces the “Simple Gifts” melody
in slight variations and fragments alternating with echoes of the chorale. Subsequently, the andante
third section wanders farther away from the work’s point of origin. At times it is difficult to remember
how this lyrical yet uncertain music developed out of the percussive section that preceded it. The
final section starts as an altered reprise of the second section, then builds the chorale and “Simple
Gifts” melodies to an exciting conclusion.
Although this multifaceted work has many valuable traits, the singular aspect that draws me to the
piece is the use of the “Simple Gifts” melody. Notwithstanding the fact that Zdechlik chose the
melody strictly for compositional reasons, one cannot remove “Simple Gifts” from its historical and
social context. Elder Joseph Brackett composed the “Simple Gifts” music and lyrics in 1848:
’Tis the gift to be simple, ’tis the gift to be free,
’Tis the gift to come down where we ought to be,
And when we find ourselves in the place just right,
’Twill be in the valley of love and delight.
When true simplicity is gain’d,
To bow and to bend we shan’t be asham’d,
To turn, turn will be our delight,
Till by turning, turning we come out right.
As American musicians, we are quite familiar with this tune in its many forms, among them the final
section of Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring. Therefore, in performing and hearing Zdechlik’s
very unique composition, one is constantly reminded of the music’s greater scope. Whether familiar
with or a stranger to “Simple Gifts,” Chorale and Shaker Dance is a delightful and sincere example
of creative expression and music’s place in our society.
~Lisette Armstrong
Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night Elliot Del Borgo
The Dylan Thomas poem Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night was the motivation for this
musical composition. While not a programmatic depiction of the poem, the work attempts to
recreate the essence of the poem in sound.

The opening motive, representative of the life force, permeates much of the work. An Ivesian use of
sound layers – in the form of polytonal hymns – calls to mind the struggles and persistence of the
human spirit and its refusal to “go gentle.” In conversation with Mr. Del Borgo he suggested that
the sense of struggle and persistence must be performed with great emotional intensity from each
performer and that each performer must draw deeply from their own personal struggles to bring
emotional truth to the performance of this work.
The piece closes with a strong sense of affirmation and continuance suggesting, “As [life] ends here
it starts some place else.” On a personal note three years ago my friend and colleague, Heather
Christensen, gave her life to save the lives of 52 students when a bus rolled on the way home from
a Marching Band Contest. May I dedicate this performance to her; she did not go gentle into that
good night. Thank you Heather!
Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night
By Dylan Thomas
Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Mark Camphouse (conductor, George Mason University Wind Symphony)
A product of the rich cultural life of Chicago, composer-conductor Mark
Camphouse was born in Oak Park, Illinois in 1954. He holds undergraduate
and graduate degrees in music from Northwestern University, where he
studied conducting with John P. Paynter, composition with Alan Stout, and
trumpet with the late Vincent Cichowicz. A scholarship from the prestigious
Civic Orchestra of Chicago (Training Orchestra of the Chicago Symphony)
enabled Camphouse to study trumpet privately for two years with legendary
Chicago Symphony Principal Trumpet Emeritus, Adolph Herseth.

Camphouse began composing at an early age, with the Colorado Philharmonic premiering his First
Symphony when he was 17. His 25 published works for wind band (Alfred, Kjos, Southern, and
TRN Music Companies) have received widespread critical acclaim and are performed widely in the
U.S. and abroad. Many may be heard on the Albany, Citadel, and Summit labels. His compositions
have been performed in such prestigious venues as Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Orchestra
Hall-Chicago, Royal Albert Hall-London, and conferences of the World Association for Symphonic
Bands and Ensembles, the College Band Directors National Association, Music Educators National
Conference, American Bandmasters Association, and Midwest International Band and Orchestra
Clinic. Principal commissions include those by the John P. Paynter Foundation, William D. Revelli
Foundation, Bands of America, Inc., the United States Army Band, the United States Marine Band,
Northshore Concert Band, and some of America’s finest college, high school, and community bands.
Camphouse has served as a guest conductor, lecturer, and clinician in 42 states, Canada, and
Europe. He was elected to membership in the American Bandmasters Association in 1999 and
has served as coordinator of the National Band Association Young Composer Mentor Project since
2000. He conceived and edits the unique multi-volume book series for GIA Publications, Composers
on Composing for Band. He was featured in a nationally broadcast interview on NPR’s “Weekend
America,” focusing on his composition entitled A Movement for Rosa honoring the late Civil Rights
heroine Rosa Parks on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of her single act of courage sparking the
modern Civil Rights movement.
Camphouse is Professor and Associate Director of the School of Music at George Mason University
where he conducts the Wind Symphony and teaches courses in Conducting and Composition.
Other principal artistic, administrative, and educational positions he has held include serving as
Music Director and Conductor of the New Mexico Music Festival at Taos Symphony Orchestra
(1977-1982), Music Division Head of the Virginia Governor’s School for the Arts (1985-1989),
Acting Dean of Music of New World School of the Arts in Miami, Florida during the 1998-99
academic year, and Director of Bands at Radford University in Virginia from 1984-2006.
He won the 15th Annual National Band Association Composition Competition in 1991, received
the 1991 Radford University Dedmon Award for Professorial Excellence (Radford’s highest faculty
honor), and attained regional finalist status in the prestigious White House Fellowship Competition
in 1992. Virginia Governor Mark Warner presented Professor Camphouse with a 2002 Outstanding
Faculty Award, sponsored by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia. This award is the
Commonwealth’s highest honor for faculty at Virginia’s colleges and universities for demonstrated
excellence in teaching, research, and public service.
Mark Camphouse has been married to soprano Elizabeth Ann Curtis since 1982. They have twin
daughters, Beth and Briton.
Lisette Armstrong (conductor) is in her first semester as a Master’s student
in conducting at George Mason University. So far she is thoroughly
enjoying the countless opportunities offered by the School of Music. She
studies conducting with Mark Camphouse and is one of the conductors for
the Repertory Orchestra. Lisette has an equal love of band and orchestra
literature and is therefore thankful to be able to pursue study in both genres.
Therefore, she also considers it a pleasure to play trumpet in the GMU Wind
Symphony, Symphony Orchestra, and small ensembles, and to take lessons
with Denny Edelbrock.
Lisette earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music and a minor in Art History at the College of William
& Mary. She graduated Summa Cum Laude and was awarded membership in Phi Beta Kappa
and Omicron Delta Kappa her senior year. While at William & Mary, Lisette played trumpet in
the W&M Wind Symphony, Brass Quintet, and occasionally with the Symphony Orchestra and
Wham Bam Big Band. Lisette studied conducting with Angela Holt and Akiko Fujimoto, both

of whom helped build her foundation and encouraged her to think seriously about conducting.
During her senior year, she served as the student conductor for the W&M Wind Symphony and
the orchestral director of Sinfonicron, a student-run light opera company. Lisette’s trumpet teacher
Bob Ransom, quintet director Peter DuBeau, and countless other music, art history, and Hispanic
studies professors were wonderful mentors to her throughout her time at William & Mary. The
liberal arts environment was very beneficial to Lisette; she thrived with the opportunities to explore
many academic interests, present a paper at the Mid-Atlantic Council of Latin American Studies
2009 conference, and do service projects for the Williamsburg and global communities. She also
was involved with campus and music ministries at Williamsburg Presbyterian Church and directed
the Carol Choir of preschool and early elementary children.
Much of her present involvement in music would not exist without the support of her family and
her long-time trumpet teacher, John Wright. Lisette was reassured by participating in All-District
and All-Virginia Band events that music really could be a pillar in her life. Her recent summers spent
working at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp and with the camp’s International Youth Orchestra have been
further inspiration to study and foster a love of music in others.
Jermie Arnold (conductor) was the Director of Bands at American Fork
Junior High School in American Fork, Utah from 2003-2010. Jermie
earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Music Education from Brigham
Young University. He has received the Semper Fidelis award for leadership,
the Presser Foundation Scholarship for music educators, and the Superior
Accomplishment Award from the Utah Music Educators Association. In 2009,
the Utah Music Educators Association recognized Jermie as the Outstanding
Junior High-Middle School Music Educator of the year. As a trumpet
player for over 24 years, he has participated in Honor Bands, the Brigham
Young University’s Symphonic Band, Symphony Orchestra, and The Utah Premiere Brass. He also
participated in marching bands while in school, including five years as Drum Major. While Director
at American Fork Junior High School, the program grew to over 400 students in four concert bands
and three jazz bands. His ensembles received superior ratings at festivals throughout Utah each year,
and the Wind Ensemble has performed at the National Music Educators Conference, the Inaugural
Music for All National Middle School Festival, and the Utah Music Educators Conference. His
jazz bands were recognized as among the outstanding junior high jazz bands in the state of Utah.
While in Utah, Jermie also served as the Assistant Director of Bands at American Fork High School,
with responsibilities over the brass and visual aspects of the nationally recognized marching band.
While Asst. Director of the Marching Band, countless Region and State competitions were won,
in addition to performances at the Presidential Inaugural Parade, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day
Parade, and an invitation to perform in the Tournament of Roses Parade. Jermie is co-founder and
emeritus Associate Conductor of the Wasatch Winds Symphonic Band, an adult community band
of over 70 members. Jermie has presented at numerous conferences across the country and been a
guest conductor in New York, Hawaii, Utah, and Idaho. He has served as adjudicator at Marching
and Concert Band contests throughout the Western Region of the United States. Jermie is currently
perusing a Doctorate in conducting from George Mason University, where he studies with Mark
Camphouse, Anthony Maiello, and Dennis Layendecker. He has been married to his wife, Amber,
for 10 years, and they enjoy their children Jacob, Kyle, and Bethany.
Adam K. Hilkert (conductor) is Doctoral Conducting Associate at George
Mason University, where he studies instrumental conducting with Anthony
Maiello and Mark Camphouse. He also serves as Associate Conductor of
the Mason Symphonic Band, Conductor of the Mason Repertory Orchestra,
