The following is a listing of<br />
structural steel detailing firms.<br />
Information was obtained by<br />
contacting AISC and NISD<br />
member detailers, participants<br />
in last year’s list, and members of the<br />
<strong>Steel</strong>-Link list serve. Participants completed<br />
an online form on AISC’s web site.<br />
AISC members are highlighted in red.<br />
Geographic Distribution<br />
More than 400 firms responded to this<br />
year’s survey. California and Texas had<br />
the largest number of respondents, with<br />
at least 30 detailing firms each. Together<br />
they accounted for more than 13% of the<br />
total respondents. Florida, Pennsylvania,<br />
and Tennessee closely followed, each accounting<br />
for more than 3% of the total,<br />
with respondents in the high teens and<br />
low twenties. Alabama, Arizona, Illinois,<br />
Missouri, New York, Ohio, British Columbia,<br />
Canada, and Ontario, Canada<br />
each held at least 3% of the respondents,<br />
together accounting for almost a quarter<br />
of the total surveyed detailers. Canada<br />
was the most highly represented country<br />
outside the United States, with 40 responding<br />
detailers-nearly 10% of the<br />
total.<br />
Slightly more than 80% of surveyed<br />
firms said the majority of their staff work<br />
in the United States. More than 6% of detailers<br />
had staff outside North America,<br />
including Australia, Chile, Ecuador,<br />
India, Israel, New Zealand, the Philippines,<br />
Singapore, and South Korea.<br />

<strong>Detailers</strong><br />
Nearly half of the respondents had detailed<br />
projects outside the United States,<br />
Mexico, or Canada. Roughly 80% of the<br />
surveyed firms reported that they had<br />
experience in detailing metric projects.<br />
Firm Sizes and Skill<br />
As in recent years, most respondents<br />
were small detailing firms, with a median<br />
number of four detailers per firm.<br />
Like last year, the majority of surveyed<br />
firms were established businesses, with a<br />
median of ten years in operation.<br />
Specialized Detailing Experience<br />
Almost 90% of surveyed detailers said<br />
they have specialized detailing experience.<br />
More than 85% reported experience<br />
with stairs and railings, slightly more<br />
than 80% had experience in specialized<br />
industrial detailing, and slightly less than<br />
80% had experience with hipped roofs<br />
and valleys. Just over 20% of respondents<br />
had detailed highway or railroad<br />
bridges, while slightly under 20% had experience<br />
detailing transmission towers.<br />
Software and Technology<br />
Every respondent reported the use of<br />
at least some CAD software for detailing.<br />
More than 85% of responding firms said<br />
all of their employees use CAD software<br />
on a regular basis-a greater than 10% increase<br />
from last year. More than 40% said<br />
their detailing firm has a web site.<br />
As in previous years, AutoCAD was<br />
by far the most popular software pack-<br />
age, as indicated by more than 80% of respondents.<br />
Design Data’s SDS/2 is used<br />
by 25% of surveyed detailers, while<br />
Tekla, Inc.’s Xsteel is used by 21%. Ten%<br />
of respondents reported use of SSDCP<br />
software. Roughly 10% of detailers said<br />
they use custom or proprietary software<br />
packages.<br />
More than one quarter of respondents<br />
said they have experience with Electronic<br />
Data Interchange (EDI) through the<br />
CIS/2 format. This indicates a slight increase<br />
from last year, and rising numbers<br />

<strong>Steel</strong> Detailer Training: Responding to the Needs of <strong>Detailers</strong><br />
For several years, AISC has recognized<br />
the need for a more effective<br />
means of training detailers to support<br />
the industry. Excellent training programs<br />
exist across North America, at<br />
colleges, universities, and private training<br />
facilities, but barriers in time and geography<br />
often make it difficult for<br />
detailers and potential students to attend<br />
these programs. When this is coupled<br />
with a constant demand to meet project<br />
deadlines and the unpredictability of a<br />
“feast or famine” construction market, attending<br />
such a program becomes impossible<br />
for many.<br />
AISC is working hard to meet this<br />
need. AISC's first effort in this arena is<br />
the Detailer Training Series, a CD-ROM<br />
training program for beginning detailers.<br />
This 10-module, 13-disc program was<br />
created and endorsed by AISC and the<br />
National Institute of <strong>Steel</strong> Detailing<br />
(NISD) in 2000. Since then, it has become<br />
an invaluable tool, as it provides a<br />
cost-effective alternative to off-site in-<br />
struction. The Detailer Training Series<br />
lays out the basics of the detailing<br />
process, from bolting and welding, to illustrative<br />
detailing of a two-story building<br />
including five styles of shear connections<br />
and vertical and horizontal bracing.<br />
In recognition of a need for further instruction<br />
on steel detailing, the AISC<br />
Committee on <strong>Steel</strong> Detailing is partnering<br />
with Dowco Consultants, a recognized<br />
leader in steel detailing, to develop<br />
a comprehensive online training course<br />
for steel detailers. This program will pro-<br />
vide training for steel detailing students<br />
based on the content of AISC’s updated<br />
Detailing for <strong>Steel</strong> <strong>Construction</strong>, 2nd Edition.<br />
The program will be structured to<br />
allow students to work through the<br />
course while keeping up with job responsibilities,<br />
and will include a live instructor<br />
to answer questions posed by<br />
students who are enrolled in the program.<br />
This training course is currently<br />
under development for an anticipated release<br />
in 2006.<br />
With the development of this new<br />
program, and its ability to reach students<br />
throughout the country, AISC will be able<br />
to better respond to the needs of steel<br />
detailers.<br />
