New Initiative in Reservoir Engineering Announced Keith Millheim, Eberly Family Chair and professor, and W. Darrell “Gus” Gertsch, director, Sarkeys Energy Center and vice provost for Energy Research and Development Programs, announced a realignment last November of great significance to students in energy education and one that represents a milestone for Sarkeys Energy Center and the College of Engineering. The School of Petroleum and Geological Engineering has organized a Reservoir Engineering Group to be led on an interim basis by Dan O’Meara, former director of the Sarkeys Energy Center’s Institute for Reservoir Characterization. The associate director of the new department is Faruk Civan. Other key faculty involved in the initiative are Roy Knapp and Richard Hughes. The merger of complementary strengths is expected to position OU among the world’s leading educational and research institutions in the area of reservoir engineering and management. The team’s near-term focus will be to reinvigorate the undergraduate and graduate programs in reservoir engineering and to gradually add additional talent to the program through adjunct faculty from industry and postdoctoral appointments. The quality of the team’s educational and research efforts and the resulting value-added for OU’s students will also be enhanced by the department’s interactions with the SEC Institute for Exploration and Development Geosciences, led by John Castagna, McCollough Chair professor of geology and geosciences, and by the staff and facilities of the Integrated Core Characterization Center in Tulsa, acquired by OU from BP Amoco in August 1999. 18 OU Discovery School of Petroleum and Geological Engineering New Program in Natural Gas Anew master’s degree in natural gas engineering and management has been proposed at the University of Oklahoma. The program is a cooperative venture involving OU’s School of Petroleum and Geological Engineering, School of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science, and Sarkeys Energy Center. If approved, it will be the only program of its kind in the world. “Natural gas is the future of the energy industry. Within just a few years, the need for this product in homes and businesses will be considered as critical as the need for electricity or to be connected to the Internet,” says Jonathan Kwan, visiting professor and instructor in the program. “The rest of the country and the world will be looking to the University of Oklahoma for leadership and the deve-lopment of new knowledge in the area of natural gas technology and management.” The coursework would cover several components of the natural gas industry: technology, production, transportation, utilization, safety and environmental issues, and economic aspects, including contracts, policy and marketing. The first course, Applications of System Dynamics in Natural Gas Management, will help managers learn to use dynamic business strategy models, analysis and simulation processors to identify the impact of various possible activities on an overall strategy. Other units in the course address business consolidation and resource planning and corporate performance monitors. The program will fill another need, that of the energy industry professional who wishes to add to her or his knowledge base but can’t take the time to commute to Norman or Stillwater for an advanced degree. The Natural Gas Engineering and Management program will be taught in Oklahoma City and Tulsa, as well as Norman. Courses will be available to students who are pursuing a master’s degree as well as those individuals who only wish to take a course or two without pursuing a specific degree. The first new course in the program, Applications of System Dynamics in Natural Gas Management was offered in the fall 1999 semester and was taught by Kwan, Keith Millheim, Eberly Family Chair and director of the School of Petroleum and Geological Engineering, and Richard Mallinson, associate professor of Chemical Engineering and director, OU Institute for Gas Utilization And Technology. OU Discovery School of Petroleum and Geological Engineering SPE Technology Summit Held at OU Technology decisionmakers from around the world convened in Norman, Okla. as guests of the School of Petroleum and Geological Engineer ing, the College of Engineering and Sarkeys Energy Center on April 28 and 29,1999, for the third SPE Technology Roundtable. Participants represented national oil companies, megamajors, existing majors, independents, service companies, governments, and academia. Keith Millheim, Eberly Family Chair and professor, School of Petroleum and Geological Engineering, served as facilitator for the two-day session. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the industry’s new directions and to debate technology development and utilization for the emerging oil and gas industry. Questions that were posed ranged from the role of research and technology under various price scenarios to the industry’s shift from exploration to acquisitions and production. SPE’s JPT covered the meeting and reported on the proceedings.
