Hello Fellow Porsche Enthusiasts!
I’d like to thank Jay
Yost for hosting the third
Wheels and Wine car
show. The number of
entrants in this year’s
show was a bit lower
than last year but then
there was Father’s Day
and other festivals in
the area so it was to be
expected. There were some good looking cars and great
camaraderie. I hope to have a write up for the next
newsletter with a list of the winners. I’ve included some
pictures from the event.
The fifth annual Porsches to Oxford (www.
porsches2oxford.com) event, hosted by the Mid-Ohio
region, is coming up on Saturday, July 25. Last year we
had a number of LTR members attend and they had a
fantastic time. As expected they got to see some great
looking Porsches. Jim Anderson’s 1969 911 even won
a People’s Choice award.
Bill Muir (ronin154@
yahoo.com) will be
traveling over to Oxford
again this year. If you plan
on attending send Bill an
email to let him know.
Maybe a few of us can
convoy over there.
On Saturday August
15 Wayne White will
be hosting a drive from
Jacksonville IL to to
Kampsville, IL for lunch
at the Kampsville Inn, then
continue South to Pere
Marquette State Park. This
should be a very scenic
route for everyone. Contact
Wayne (jwwhite703@
verizon.net ) for more
information. We’ll have more information in next
month’s newsletter.
Andy Berberich (one of our LTR members) is having
a great year running his Eurosport 944. There are two
articles in this month’s newsletter about Andy and his
racing. Please read them and when you see Andy tell
him congratulations and good luck with the rest of his
year.
This year’s Porsche Parade has come and gone. I
hope we have some members that will share their
experiences with all of us. Did you go? Want to write
about it?
We are still looking for a new newsletter editor. If you
enjoy writing, editing, and providing information to
others, please get in touch with Jim Roal (jroal@mchsi.
com) or me (mikel@mchsi.com). Jim and I will help
you out in anyway we can.
Enjoy life, go for a drive!
J.D. Power Quality Study:
Porsche receives quality
award
Stuttgart - 23 June 2009. The vehicles of the Dr. Ing.
h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, continue to meet the
highest quality standards in the USA, the largest export
market for the Stuttgart sports car manufacturer. The
US market research institute J.D. Power arrived at this
conclusion in its latest survey, “Initial Quality Study,”
which was published yesterday. Porsche reached
second place after Lexus, and is thereby also the best
European manufacturer.
With the prestigious brand evaluation, Porsche has now
reached a top position on four consecutive occasions;
in the years 2006 to 2008, the Stuttgart manufacturer
of sporty, premium vehicles has held first place. Frank
Tuch, head of Company Quality at Porsche, said:
“Three first and a second place in the brand evaluation
of the noted J.D. Power Initial Quality Study, in the last
four years, are the result of consistent quality work and
customer focus during development, in production and
in sales. The award demonstrates that our sustainability
strategy has paid off. The challenge is not to achieve
high-quality standards on short notice, but rather to
sustain these over the course of years. There is hard
work behind this. The high degree of satisfaction of
the Porsche customers is a reflection of the new car
quality.”
J.D. Power reviewed the satisfaction of new car buyers,
in the first 90 days after delivery of the vehicles. Based
upon a catalog containing a total of 228 criteria, nearly
81,000 customers were asked about their impressions
concerning quality and work-manship.
PORSCHE FACTORY
DRIVERS, CUSTOMER
TEAMS HAVE SUCCESS,
DISAPPOINTMENT AT
LE MANS; RS SPYDER
WINS LMP2, MICHELIN
ENERGY AWARDS – GT2
PORSCHES DNF
ATLANTA – June 13 -- While the Porsche RS Spyder is
just a memory in North America, it was certainly alive
earlier today at the checkered flag for the 24 Hours of
Le Mans as the iconic LMP2 sports prototype captured
its second Le Mans class win in two tries thanks to
the Danish customer team of Casper Elgaard, Kristian
Poulsen, and Porsche factory
driver Emmanuel Collard.
The Team Essex, which came in
second in LMP2 a year ago, beat
its Lola Judd rival by more than
14 laps, as well as capturing the
energy efficiency classification
“Michelin Green XChallenge”
as the car with the best overall
efficiency, calculated by the
ratio between lap times and fuel
consumption. Porsche lost its
chance for a one-two LMP2 RS
Spyder finish only an hour before
the end of the race, as the RS
Spyder entry of NAVI Team GOH
spun off the track while running
comfortably in second place.
Under braking for the first chicane
on the Hunaudières straight on an
oil spill of a competitor, Japanese
driver Seiji Ara hit the barriers and the car was forced to
retire.
“We’re proud that in customer hands the RS Spyder not
only confirmed its high speed and reliability again but
also won the environmental classification. It’s such a
great pity that the second RS Spyder retired. NAVI Team
GOH put in an immaculate performance and really would
have deserved to secure second,” said Porsche Head of
Motorsport, Hartmut Kristen.
In 2008, the RS Spyder won the energy efficiency
challenge at all races and championships – in the Le Mans
24 Hours, the American Le Mans Series and the European
Le Mans Series. With this, the RS Spyder impressively
underlined its status as the world’s most efficient sports
prototype.
“After claiming second last year we are absolutely over
the moon with our victory today,” said Essex driver Casper
Elgaard (Denmark). “This is a huge success for our Danish
team, which only began competing in long distance racing
last year.”
911 GT3 RSR, IMSA Performance Matmut: Raymond Narac, Patrick Long, Patrick Pilet
July 2009 http://ltr.pca.org/

Porsche works driver Emmanuel Collard
(France) added: “The key to success was
the RS Spyder. We didn’t have the slightest
technical problem and turned fast and steady
laps.”
Only once in the night was there an
unscheduled stop. Before the first
Hunaudières chicane, the two close-running
RS Spyder hit a patch of oil and began to
slide. Keisuki Kunimoto (NAVITeam GOH)
nudged the Essex car, resulting in both
vehicles having body parts replaced.
“Our crew did a super job,” said the third
Essex driver, Kristian Poulsen (Denmark),
who celebrated his Le Mans debut with
victory. “I would like to thank the team and
mostly Casper and Emmanuel. They did most
of the work.”
After a break of four years, NAVI Team GOH, Le Mans
winner of 2004 with Seiji Ara, looked like they would
bring home a second place right up until an hour before
the flag – with a ten lap advantage over third position.
Oil from a competitor became Ara’s eventual fate.
“I had no chance. Two wheels hit the oil that I couldn’t
see while braking,” said Seiji Ara. “It’s a bitter end of
a great race. I’m pleased that the RS Spyder is not only
fast, but also safe.” His compatriot Keisuke Kunimoto
contested the long distance classic for the first time.
Porsche works driver Sascha Maassen was full of
praise: “I salute our team’s performance. Perfect
preparation, perfect team work in every respect. I’m
so sorry that we couldn’t bring home the success they
deserved.” For the perfect work in the pit stops, the
team received a special prize from the organizers.
Porsche works drivers Timo Bernhard (Germany) and
Romain Dumas (France), lent to Audi for the Le Mans
24 hour race, lost all chances to win with a technical
defect in their #3 Audi R15 TDI which resulted in
repairs over several hours on Saturday night. With their
chase through the field from the back to finish 18th, the
two shone with their excellent lap times. “It hurts to be
out of contention for overall victory so early on,” said
Bernhard.
RS Spyder, Team Essex: Casper Elgaard, Emmanuel Collard, Kristian Poulsen
“Still, it was great fun. The Audi crew made us feel very
welcome from the first moment on,” added Dumas.
In the production-based GT2 class, a one-two
qualifying effort for the Porsche 911 GT3 RSR from
qualifying could not be turned into a race success. After
just two hours, the race came to an end for the three
Porsche works drivers Marc Lieb (Germany), Richard
Lietz (Austria) and Wolf Henzler (Germany). A problem
with the fuel system caused the engine of the 911 to
die and not start again – 100 meters from the entrance
to the pit lane. As the regulations do not allow a car to
be towed in such a case, the leading trio of the German
Felbermayr-Protonteam had no chance to repair the
otherwise technically perfect 911 and retired.
“Of course I’m very disappointed,” said Marc Lieb.
“But we are looking ahead and already looking forward
to the next race in the Le Mans Series, where we want
to extend our championship lead with another victory.”
For the American Flying Lizard team, the 2009 Le
Mans race ended in the early morning hours when
Darren Law (USA) collided heavily with the barriers.
Prior to this, pole-setter Jörg Bergmeister (Germany)
and team owner Seth Neiman (USA) were steadily
moving in the direction of a podium result with their
GT3 RSR. The French IMSA Performance Matmut
team with Porsche works drivers Patrick Pilet (France)
and Patrick Long (USA) as well as Raymond Narac
(France) maintained third place for more than two-
thirds of the race distance. OnSunday morning a problem
with the power transmission put an end to their promising
charge.
LMP2 champions - (l-r) Peter Halvorsen, Emmanuel Collard, Kristian Poulsen, Casper Elgaard
Unlike the American Le Mans Series,
where cars can be ranked in the finals
standing as long as they complete
70 percent of the laps of the overall
winner, the 24 Hours of Le Mans
requires a team to take the checkered
flag at the end of the race to be
classified in the results. Under ALMS
rules, the RS Spyder entry of NAVI
Team GOH would have finished third
in LMP2.
Porsche Presents
“The Porsche Way“
Stuttgart. Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is
proudly presenting its history “in motion“: In a 2 ½film
“The Porsche Way“, the Company presents its
entire history from the early years up to the present day
on one full-coverage DVD. Starting with the lifetime
achievements of Ferdinand and Ferry Porsche, the
film focuses in eight chapters on the development of
the famous sports car manufacturer, proceeding from
one decade to the next. “This is the first time that a
car maker is presented so exhaustively on a DVD”,
says Dieter Landenberger, the Director of the Porsche
Archives.
The DVD is based on the Archives Collection with
more than 5,000 hours of footage. Taking most
impressive scenes from the history of the Company, the
products and motorsport, the DVD presents numerous
film extracts never seen before. Several outstanding
celebrities of former times also make an appearance
in the film, among them former racing drivers such
as Hans Herrmann, Eberhard Mahle, and Paul Ernst
Strähle as well as former employees of Porsche such
as the “Engine King“ Hans Mezger or Dr. Heinz Rabe,
formerly the Director of the Porsche Social Affairs
Department. As a further highlight, the film comes with
music composed specifically for this DVD.
“The Porsche Way“ from the Porsche Museum Edition
is now available in German and English at the Porsche
Museum Shop at a price of Euro 24.90.
Two More Wins and a
Track Record at Putnam
Park
Mount Meridian, IN – Co-op Racing participated in the
second round of racing in the NASA Midwest racing
series. This round was held at the very popular regional
Putnam Park Road Course in Eastern Indiana. This was
the first weekend of dry weather for NASA Midwest
and the team. Driver Andy Berberich in the Eurosport
944 was consistent in his results of first place in each
race. The weekend went well for the team, but not so
well for others who ended up totaling their car due to
an off track incident.
The qualifying session was the first session of the year
that finished with a dry track.
Of the five 944-Spec drivers, Berberich qualified the
Eurosport 944 third behind Angel Blasquez and Eric
Kuhns. Ray Freundt and Berberich were held up in
traffic and never got a clean lap. Overall, the session
did not end well for Kuhns. An off track incident
resulted in Kuhns flipping his 944-Spec race car.
Kuhns, with a trip to the hospital, was uninjured.
However, his car has since been retired from racing and
is in the process of being dismantled and sold for parts.
Kuhns has since repurchased his old car, which he has
had a lot of success with, and will be back behind the
wheel at the next race. For the remainder of the racing
weekend, Kuhns drove the Race Works/Bennington
Motorsports rental 944-Spec car.
Blasquez started up front with Freundt just behind the
Eurosport 944. A melee of Miatas in turn one allowed
Ray to pass for second position. It took about four
laps for Berberich to track down Angel and another
four laps to reel in Ray. After several attempts to pass
Ray, Berberich finally got a run on him into seven
which resulted in good track position coming out of
turn eight. At this time, the two were approaching lap
traffic. The traffic forced Berberich to aggressively
overtake the first place position. “Looking back, it
was probably a little too early in the race to make
that aggressive of a move” Berberich pondered.
“Unfortunately, the pass was made with slight body
contact.” Berberich held onto the lead and finished first
in the five car field.
Following qualifying third on Saturday, Co-op Racing
was looking for opportunities to pick up the pace.
The team turned to Kauth & Mayeur owner and Spec
Miata driver Michael Benet. The discussion involved
car handling characteristics, setup options, and
driving techniques. The conversation resulted in a few
modifications to the car and to Berberich’s driving.
The results were a first place Sunday qualification and
a new 944-Spec track record of 1:24.048. Berberich
broke the record by about half a second and it couldn’t
have been done without the help of Benet and Kauth &
Mayeur.
At the start of Sunday’s sprint race, Kuhns got a good
jump at the start and slipped passed Berberich into first.
Berberich applied pressure to Kuhns and was waiting
for his opportunity to pass. That opportunity came
when an overtaking car fowled up Kuhns’ run through
turn seven. Berberich experienced that same situation
earlier with the same faster overtaking car. With multiclass
racing, passing and “blocking” opportunities are
available utilizing faster and slower cars. The multiclass
format also requires racers to maintain a certain
level of racing etiquette. In this scenario, the faster car
broke this etiquette by interfering with two cars battling
for position in class. When the overtaking car made a
run on Kuhns in the outside of turn seven, Berberich
tucked in and made the same pass. “It was pretty early
in the race, but it was a passing opportunity that I
couldn’t miss.” Berberich remarked. “Utilizing traffic
is part of the fundamentals of road racing. It has hurt
July 2009 0
http://ltr.pca.org/

my outcome in the past and in this instance, and others,
it has helped it.” Berberich was able to hold the position
and again finish first in the five car field.
The team cannot be more pleased with their performance
at Putnam Park. The team is learning quite a bit about
their 944 Spec car and is confident that they will
continually improve and utilize its abilities. The weekend
did have its dark side, but everyone is glad that Eric
Kuhns was able to walk away from his unfortunate
accident unharmed. Kuhns will be the first one to testify
to the importance of adequate safety equipment.
By the time this is published, the team will have already
returned from Watkins Glen, New York.
Berberich races for Children’s
Hospital funding
Andrew Berberich races with NASA (National Auto
Sport Association) competing in the Porsche 944 Spec
class. Sponsor companies Toyo Tires and Hawk Brake
Pads offer contingency awards for placing first, second,
or third in class.
The contingencies can be used at the sponsor
companies for parts, tires, racing protective gear and
brake pads. Andy and his wife, Shawn, have decided
to match his contingency earnings with a donation to
the Children’s Hospital of Illinois. When asked why he
decided to do this, he said, “We are very blessed. This
is a way of giving back in gratitude for all God has
given us.”
The Children’s Hospital of Illinois is located within
OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria. It was
established in 1990 and is the only full service hospital
for children in Central Illinois. Each year, Children’s
Hospital has over 5,000 admissions, 2,000 newborn
deliveries, and 16,000 emergency department visits.
The hospital is committed to children’s health and
well-being and helping those who cannot find help
elsewhere. The foundation was established on the
belief that no child should be denied care because
of their lack of ability to pay. Donations are used
to deliver outstanding pediatric care; recruit top
pediatric specialists; offer state-of-the-art technology;
provide programmatic focus on treating medical
needs of children; offer financial support programs for
children’s families in need; foster an affiliation with the
University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria;
and to invest in research programs.
Andy is hoping that people will follow his lead
and agree to match his winnings and donate to the
Children’s Hospital. Andy has donated $1200 from his
first three race events of the season. He won First place
in three races at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisc.,
earned two first place finishes at Putnam Park Road
Course in Mount Meridian, Ind. and won first place in
his most previous event at Blackhawk Farms Raceway
in South Beloit, IL.
