Hello fellow Porsche Enthusiasts,
to Oxford on Friday. If you are interested in
going please contact Jim Anderson at Jim_Anderson@oldnational.com.
Yesterday I received
a letter from the Porsches2oxford organizers
saying they had just hit the 200 car mark.
I hope you are having a great summer so far.
I know Shelley and I are. So far we have been
to The Tail of the Dragon, Blue Ridge Boxster
Summit (BRBS), and over to Mid-Ohio for the
Grand-Am race (ok I went to the race). We are
putting a lot of miles on the Boxster and enjoying
all of them. But isn’t that what a Porsche
was made for? I think so. Having a car sit in
the garage just gathers dust. You’ll hear more
about our trips later on in the newsletter.
By the time you’ve read this Jay Yost will have
hosted the second annual Wheels and Wine
Car show. I hope I saw a number of you there.
Jay has put a lot of work into the event. When
you see him, say thanks.
As I mentioned in the past we (the board)
The Tail of the Dragon
Mike Matthews
President, Lincoln Trail Region
I’ve heard about the Tail of the Dragon for many
years but I’ve never driven it. That changed
this year. Glenn and Wendy Moore (Chicago
Region), Shelley and I took a detour on our way
to the Blue Ridge Boxster Summit (BRBS) in
Blowing Rock NC. to visit the Dragon. For those
of you who haven’t heard of the Dragon before,
it has 318 turns in 11 miles. If you like to drive
twisty curvy roads the Dragon is one of the best
in the nation. The Dragon is located on the west
side of the Great Smoky Mountains National
Park in western North Carolina.
Our drive to the Dragon started on a Tuesday
in Mahomet and ended in Knoxville, TN for
a relaxing evening with our friends. Normally
we take a nice twisty curvy route through the
mountains to get to Blowing Rock but since we
wanted to drive the Dragon on Wednesday we
took the straight and easy way from Mahomet
to Knoxville. We headed out the next morning
for some fun driving (or at least I thought it was
fun).
Our route on Wednesday took us south out of
Knoxville on US-129 to Robinsville. We then
took the Cherohala Scenic Highway west out of
Robinsville and looped back to US-129. It is a
very scenic drive and we all enjoyed the drive.
There was a light drizzle Wednesday morning
which left the Dragon wet so most people were
taking their time. It seemed that some people
took more time that others but you never want to
fall off the side of a mountain. We encountered
switch-back after switch-back in the mountains.
Our first trip around the route was at a nice
slow pace. The scenery was beautiful and
Shelley and I both enjoyed the trip. The route
between Maryville and Robinsville was the
most energetic part of the trip. I was constantly
watching the road for traffic coming around a
turn. Not because I was trying to use both sides
of the road but because other’s may. There are
many stories about large trucks using the route
and taking up both sides of the road. I have a
friend that has a video of this happening and he
stopped just in time to avoid the truck.
The second pass down US-129 was a bit more
spirited than the first. The road was drier and
I had more confidence with the route. This is
an area where you can practice being smooth
on your transitions from accelerator to brake
to accelerator. At times I forgot that someone
else was in the car with me when I got into
my “zone”. This can cause various levels of
discomfort for the passenger who doesn’t
have any idea when and where I am going to
accelerate, brake or turn --- Sorry Shelley.
The speed limit on the Dragon is around 30-40
MPH and the police watch this very carefully.
There are many accidents on the Dragon and
many people are hurt or killed. I just visited
a website about the Dragon (http://www.
tailofthedragon.com) and read that there was an
accident in June and a motorcyclist died. So if
July 2008 4
http://ltr.pca.org/
you take the trip please be careful. We want to
see you for some of the up coming events.
The Cherohala Scenic Highway was the most
scenic part of the route. I was watching the
GPS unit and it said we were above the 5300 ft
mark. The picture below is from a scenic view
lookout point. I really would have liked to have
seen it on a clear day. I can just imagine how
beautiful it must be with full sunshine. They
have a number of places you can stop to enjoy
the view and I highly recommend it.
Member Appreciation Outing
We appreciate you!! On Sunday, July 20,
the Lincoln Trail Region is having a member
appreciation outing to say thanks to our
membership. We will meet at Association
Park Lake Bloomington, in Hudson IL (near
Bloomington), from 2 PM until 5 PM. The LTR
will provide the meal, soft drinks, and a desert.
All you need to bring is yourself, your family
or guest and your own chairs. Please contact
Patsy Weber (309-838-8641 or Patsy@slucia.
com) so we have an idea of how many to expect.
Directions below. Hope to see you all there!
The roads were in very good condition with
US-129 being the better of the roads.
So if you are looking for a beautiful and fun
drive take a look at a trip to the Dragon. You
don’t have to drive fast to have a good time,
just take your time and enjoy it. I recommend
that you take the drive in the middle of the
week to avoid the traffic.
From 55 North get off at Veterans Parkway. Left
Porsche RS Spyder LMP2
Teams Finish One-two At
Le Mans 24 Hour Classic
In Twice around-the Clock
Debut
TWO LEADING PORSCHE 911 GT3 RSRs FALL
BACK IN ACCIDENT
LE MANS, France – June 15, 2008 - The 24 Hours of
Le Mans premiere for the Porsche RS Spyder could
not have gone better as, at the world’s toughest long
distance race, the sports prototype from Weissach
celebrated a one-two finish in the LMP2 class.
After a trouble free run without a single technical
problem, Jos Verstappen, Jeroen Bleekemolen and
Petervan Merksteijn (all from The Netherlands)
crossed the finish line first. The trio from the Van
Merksteijn Motorsport team held an eight lap
advantage at the finish over the second-placed
RS Spyder of John Nielsen, Casper Elgaard (both
Denmark) and Porsche works and Penske Racing
driver Sascha Maassen(Germany). Starting the sports
car marathon from first and second on the grid, the two
teams controlled the race with their 476 hp RS Spyder
right from the start.
In contrast, the three teams with the Porsche 911
GT3 RSR in the production-based GT2 category
experienced bad luck. After qualifying on the pole and
running first and second at the beginning of the race,
an accident and technical trouble robbed all hopes of
repeating last year’s class victory.
“I’m thrilled that the expectations of our customer
teams, Van Merksteijn Motorsport and Essex, have
been fulfilled. The RS Spyder has proven that it’s not
just fast but also particularly reliable in its first 24 hour
race. The professional work of the teams was also an
important key to success,” said Hartmut Kristen, Head
of Porsche Motorsport.
“The performance of the GT3 RSR was also excellent
but unfortunately they lost their chance through an
unlucky accident with two of the cars early on in the
race.”
“This success is something very special in my racing
career,” said an ecstatic ex-Formula 1 pilot Jos
Verstappen.
“Winning at Le Mans means you go down in racing
history. For me it was also important as I’d never
competed in a 24-hour race before. The car was
unbelievably reliable and fantastic to drive. It was
great fun right from the first to the last minute.”
His team mate, Peter van Merksteijn, who also owns
the Dutch team, was ecstatic.
“This is crazy,” said the 52-year-old Dutch
businessman. “Every team member has worked
untiringly. Above all, Jos drove like a young stud. My
job was actually only to bring the RS Spyder back to
the pits without injuries and not to lose too much time
to Jos and Jeroen. This worked. Porsche’s support
was excellent and the co-operation couldn’t have been
better.”
The team had just one unscheduled repair disturbing
their run - the underbody had come loose through
cutting over the raised curbs on the track and had to be
reattached.
For the second-place Essex pilots, a touch of istfulness
was mixed with their joy over second place. In the first
third of the race, the Danish team had led for some
time – and hopes had justifiably grown for a Le Mans
win. Two slow punctures and an additional pit stop due
to electronic problems robbed them of this chance.
“It’s incredibly moving to secure second at our very
first 24 hour race as a team,” said John Nielsen, who
acts as driver and team boss and who claimed overall
victory at the long distance classic in 1990. Sascha
Maassen, who competes in the American Le Mans
Series in a similar RS Spyder, and has won Le Mans in
GT3 class 911s, also had positive feedback about his
Essex team.
July 2008 6
http://ltr.pca.org/
“Right from the start I felt great in my guest team
and I was surprised at the level of engagement and
determination at which they worked,” said the Porsche
works driver.
“It was a highlight to drive the RS Spyder here in Le
Mans. Thanks to the unusually good balance and road
holding of the car you always had total trust in the
vehicle even in the ultra fast passages.”
The teams in the production-based GT2 class also
started the race with their Porsche 911 GT3 RSRs
showing great promise. In qualifying, the Porsche works
driver Patrick Long (USA) had broken the magical
four-minute mark with a lap time of 3:58.152 minutes
in the sports car category for the first time and with his
German works driver team mate Wolf Henzler, claimed
the first two positions on the grid as a result. In the race,
two Porsche 911 GT3 RSR held a clear lead over the
rival Ferraris.
After two hours an unlucky collision between Long and
his compatriot Seth Neiman (USA) robbed them of any
chance to win. For the French IMSA Performance atmut
team with Long, works driver Richard Lietz (Austria)
and Raymond Narac (France) this signaled the end of
their race.
The 911 of the Flying Lizard Motorsports team could
rejoin the race, but sat more than 30 laps behind to
secure sixth at the flag with drivers Joerg Bergmeister
(Germany), Neiman and Johannes van Overbeek (USA).
With this, Bergmeister turned the fastest race lap by far
in the GT2 category in 3:59.887 minutes. Fifth place
in the GT2 class went to Porsche works driver Wolf
Henzler (Germany), Alex Davison (Australia) and
Horst Felbermayr (Austria). Until midnight, the trio
delivered a spirited fight for the lead against a Ferrari,
but fell far back due to a one-hour stop for repairs in the
night. “Apart from this technical defect our 911 ran like
clockwork. But the competition in our class is so close
that it’s very difficult to make up any lost time,” said
Henzler.
Farnbacher Loles Gives
Porsche First Grand-am Rolex
GT Win Of The Season
BRUMOS RACING PORSCHE RILEY GRABS POLE,
FINISHES SECOND IN DP
LEXINGTON, Ohio - June 22 – For the second straight
event, the No. 58 Brumos Racing Porsche Riley Daytona
Prototype of David Donohue and Darren Law made it to
the podium, finishing second in the Rolex Grand-Am race
at Mid-Ohio, while Eric Lux and Leh Keen drove their
No. 86 Farnbacher Loles Porsche 911 GT3 Cup to victory
in the GT class, giving Porsche its first triumph of the
season in eight races.
Darren Law finished second in the No. 58 Brumos Racing
Porsche Riley that David Donohue put on the pole. He
took the position on the final lap of racing, before a twocar
incident caused the race to end under caution. Paul
Ritchie, president of Porsche Motorsport North America,
said this trend has been building in Daytona Prototype,
and the Porsche-powered Rileys are close to winning a
race.
“When you capture the pole and finish second twice in a
row, you have to feel you’re knocking on the door for a
DP win,” said Ritchie, who took over the presidency of
PMNA from Uwe Brettel in January. Porsche’s last DP
win was a Joerg Bergmeister/Patrick Long victory in the
Ruby Tuesday Alex Job Racing Porsche Crawford last
year at Laguna Seca.
A heavy rain began pouring only seven laps into the
two hour, 45-minute event, leading to a multi-car spin
that involved numerous contenders in both classes. The
downpour early in the race resulted in a multi-car spin
involving several contenders in both classes. The incident
began when Tom Kimber-Smith spun the No. 16 Cheever
Racing Crown Royal Pontiac Coyote after contact. John
Pew spun the No. 6 Michael Shank Racing Ford Riley
to avoid Kimber-Smith, but Brad Jaeger slid the No.
77 Doran Racing Ford Dallara into Pew. Meanwhile,
several other Daytona Prototypes slid off course and
needed tows, including Jim Matthews in the No. 91 Riley
Matthews Motorsports Pontiac Riley and JC France in the
No. 59 Brumos Porsche Riley.
Farnbacher Loles Racing earned its first victory of the
2008 season, topping the GT class in the Grand-Am
Rolex Sports Car Series race at Mid-Ohio Sports Car
Course in Lexington, Ohio, on Saturday. Leh Keen of
Charleston, S.C., and Eric Lux of Jacksonville, Fla., kept
the No. 86 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car on track through
treacherous conditions to take the win.
Lux started fourth on the 22-car GT grid and gained one
position in the first 10 minutes of the two-hour 45-minute
race. Heavy rain then turned the 2.258-mile road course
into an obstacle course as multiple cars slid off-track.
GT pole winner Lawson Aschenbach spun, triggering
an incident that involved the No. 32 PR1 Motorsports
Pontiac GXP.R of Mike Forest, the No. 67 TRG Porsche
911 GT3 Cup of Tim George Jr., the No. 06 Banner
Racing Pontiac GXP.R of Marc Bunting and the No. 87
Farnbacher Loles Racing Porsche 911 GT3 Cup of Bryce
Miller.
Lux pitted for rain tires and returned to the track sixth.
He took the class lead just before the halfway mark, then
turned the car over to Keen. Back on track ninth, Keen
took the lead from Robin Liddell in the No. 57 Stevenson
Motorsports Pontiac GXP.R late in the race after aback
and forth battle, held it to the checkered flag.
“Our team today achieved a long-overdue result.
Any time you win is special, but today we witnessed
something beyond just the first win for Porsche and our
team this year. We saw two young promising drivers
deliver the goods in the most spectacular fashion. Eric
and Leh displayed composure seen in few drivers, while
under the most extreme conditions imaginable. I am
grateful our team had the opportunity to give them the
tools for such a performance,” said team owner Greg
Loles.
The next Grand-Am Rolex Series race will be the
July 3 Brumos Porsche 250 at Daytona International
Speedway. Complete results and point standings for the
Rolex Grand-Am series can be found at www.grandam.com.
Blue Ridge Boxster Sum-
mit (BRBS)
Shelley Matthews
The last weekend in May signals the gathering
of Boxster’s in the mountains of North
Carolina. Blowing Rock, NC has been the
host to the Blue Ridge Boxster Summit
(BRBS) for 10 years. This year’s BRBS was
May 28-June 1. There were about 80 Boxsters
present along with several 911s, Caymans, an
RS-60, a BMW, and even a Vet!
After a side trip to the Tail of the Dragon
(more about that from Mike), we arrived in
Blowing Rock, NC for the Thursday night
BRBS registration where we got name tags,
2 really nice duffel bags, materials and
agendas for the coming events, and BRBS
shirts. The Meadowbrook Inn is more than
accommodating by reserving the top parking
lot for Boxsters only and setting aside four
spots for washing cars! They even provide
the hoses, water, and buckets. And believe me,
those spots were generally in use! Later there
was a gathering in the bar for Boxster Beers
and to meet and greet old and new friends.
There was a welcome dinner where Ron and
Karl (who pretty much put this whole thing
on single-handedly) outlined the weekends
agenda.
On Friday, there was a Boxster Shine
and Show where people showed off their
modifications. It is a favorite gathering place
for all Porsche enthusiasts and the owners
are always more than happy to discuss their
supped-up cars – where they purchased the
upgrades, how they were enhanced, what the
enhancement did, and often, how much it
cost. After the show, we took off in assigned
groups for a fun run. The North Carolina
mountains are especially fun for those that
love the twisty-curvy roads. The scenery
was spectacular. Each group had a list of
GPS locations and, once there, the type of
group picture they needed to take. We went
to places like the Linnville Falls where we
had to take a picture of half of the group in
the water and the other half out of the water.
We also hit Little Switzerland where we got
ice cream and took a picture of the group
playing shuffle board, the stunning Heffner
Gap Overlook where we took a picture of the
group overlooking the valley. There was an
Amphitheater at the Boone Fork Overlook
where we were actors playing out a scene. We
got points for each location and each picture
along with points for the “most creative”
pictures at each location. Some of the groups
were very imaginative! We even got points for
getting a picture with a local policeman, park
ranger or fireman. Two members of our group
got “lost” on the way back to the hotel and
were stopped by the local police for driving a
little bit too fast. Luckily, Wendy was smart
enough to snap a picture of the policeman
talking to the other car in her rear view mirror
– so we got extra points for that! Everyone
returned to the hotel and had the pictures
downloaded on a computer which showed all
the pictures that night at the dinner.
At the dinner Friday night, there were prizes for
things like - who came the shortest miles (~10
miles), who came the longest miles (from
Hawaii!), who came the longest miles in a
Boxster (Nevada), and some incredible door
prizes including several of Bob Chapman’s
racing car pictures. There was also an
especially moving memorial for Chuck
“Porsche Pete” Hammersmith, founder of
Porsche Pete’s Boxster Board and BRBS.
Chuck passed away last summer and there was
a touching video memorial and tributes made in
his honor. His wife, 2 daughters and son-in-law
were honored also. It was a bittersweet evening
with stories and memorials to Chuck and the
reminder that BRBS lives because of him and
will continue to flourish because of his love and
devotion the Porsche’s and the people who
share his passion. Chuck must have been
smiling on us all because for the first time since
we’ve been going (this was our 3 rd time) the
weather was wonderful – sunny, warm, and NO
RAIN! Oh yeah – our group won the fun run!
Saturday morning was for optional drives
to Grandfather Mountain, Blowing Rock, or
just a drive through the surrounding scenic
mountains. Later in the morning there were
tech sessions by Pedro Bonilla and his Mod
Shop – showing different mods you can do
to your car. For those wanting to try doing
their own mods, Pedro and his assistance were
there to lend a hand and expert advice. After
lunch there was a tech session by Suncoast
Porsche, one of the BRBS sponsors. For the
non-car nuts, there was shopping in Blowing
Rock which offers blocks of unique stores and
also a spa session for those looking to chill
out. The evening brought a cocktail reception
and a farewell dinner. The bar was hopping
afterwards for darts, swapping stories, and
saying goodbye to old friends.
If you enjoy riding with your top down,
beautiful, scenic mountain roads, friendly,
passionate people, and great food(!!) you may
want to consider making a trip next year to the
Blue Ridge Boxster Summit. It’s fun to caravan
down (even with side trips). And you don’t
even have to have a Boxster to attend!
From Within the 13th Zone
– July 2008
And the Beat Goes On
It seems that the weather has just started to
feel like summer and the Porsche driving
season is in full swing. At this point, several
driver education events have occurred by at
least three regions (Chicago, Milwaukee &
Kentucky). A few autocrosses both individual
region and the inter-regional variety going on
between Chicago, Milwaukee, and Central
Wisconsin have occurred with several more
scheduled. A rally or two has transpired.
Concours have folks cleaning their cars where
the sun has yet to shine! Life is good!
Some big events are coming up that are
worthy of consideration. Mid July is the
Keeneland Concours in Lexington, KY with
key involvement from the Bluegrass Region.
Last year the Bluegrass Region won the
Paddock Challenge over the Corvette Club
in raising more money for the local charity.
IMSA & PCNA along with the folks from
Zone 13 will be hosting a hospitality tent at
Road America during the Generac 500, August
7 th and 8 th . This is better known as Porschplatz
and is specifically for club members and
Porsche owners. Tickets can be purchased at
www.roadamerica.com. I will still be looking
for a few volunteers to help work the tent at
Porscheplatz. Registration is open and spots
are available for the Milwaukee Regions’ DE
and Club Race (The Milwaukee Cup) to be
held at Blackhawk Farms Raceway August 15-
17 th . The registration opens today for TRAC
(The Road America Challenge), Chicago
Region’s DE and Club Race in Elkhart Lake,
Wisconsin. Come out and enjoy your Porsche!
Charlotte Parade
Speak about Parade…I am sitting in the
lounge of the host hotel, the Westin, in
downtown Charlotte. About 80 people from
Zone 13 made the trip either by plane of
Porsche to North Carolina. We had a Zone
13 party with some 40+ attending prior to the
Welcome Party. As always, it was great seeing
familiar faces. The Concours, the Gimmick
Rally, the TSD (time, speed, distance) rally
as well as the Tech Quiz have all been
completed. Several people from our Zone
have come away with trophies and smiles.
Congratulations to all that competed and have
performed well. Tomorrow, the autocross is
scheduled.
Congratulations also go to our neighbors to the
north, Nordstern Region in the Minneapolis,
Minnesota area was selected as the Region of
the Year for 2007 at yesterday’s banquet.
For those that haven’t yet heard, the 2010
Parade will be held here within our Zone 13
in St. Charles, Illinois, west of Chicago. It
will be the first “Nationally” run Parade and
should ease some of the stress typically related
to hosting a Parade. As more information
becomes available, we will share. Those
interested in volunteering, please let me know.
Escape to the Land of Enchantment
For those that didn’t sign up for Parade but
want to experience a newer type of event,
consider participating with an “Escape” event.
What is an Escape? It is a new PCA tradition
that was conceived by the zone reps in 2005 to
July 2008 2
http://ltr.pca.org/
e the alternative for those not making the trip
across the country to Parade. This year’s event
will be in Albuquerque, NM. These events are a
long weekend and have more tours rather than
any competitive events typically held at Parade.
Looks like fun in a beautiful part of the country.
The Zone Reps heard three presentations for
2009. The winner for the 2009 Escape will
be Ohio Valley Region and the Escape to the
Birthplace of Aviation. It is slated for October
2009
Membership
Seasoned members make sure and make the
new members feel welcome. We were all that
newbie in the corner of the room once upon a
time. New members, get involved. It is a great
way to learn members, have some fun and enjoy
the different aspects of the Porsche Club.
It’s not the cars, it’s the people. Go out and
start enjoying the Porsche Passion! Until next
time…
