I am pleased to report that 2008 was another record-breaking year for fundraising at<br />
the MBL, a remarkable achievement, especially in light of the weakening economy.<br />
Thanks to the dedication of our staff and volunteers and the generosity of our donors,<br />
the MBL raised $30,891,818 in private support, a 45% increase over our record-breaking<br />
achievement in 2007.<br />
Chief among our donors was The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), which<br />
awarded $15 million in support of the renovation of Loeb <strong>Laboratory</strong>, home of the MBL’s<br />
renowned life science training programs. HHMI has already committed $15 million in<br />
support of the MBL’s education program over the past decade, including their most recent<br />
pledge in 2007 of $4,000,000. It is truly an honor to receive this extra vote of confidence<br />
in the value of the MBL and its transformational training programs.<br />
Record commitments were also made by individual donors in 2008. Patricia and Charles<br />
Robertson pledged $2,000,000, establishing the Robertson Education Discretionary Fund.<br />
MBL Trustee George Logan and his wife, Harmon, endowed the Science Journalism<br />
Program and supported the Annual Fund with a gift of $1,600,000, and an anonymous<br />
donor awarded $1,500,000 to support Women in Ecological Science.<br />
Foundations that have been extremely generous to the MBL in the past returned in<br />
2008 to support the ever innovative Bay Paul Center. The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation<br />
awarded $1,215,100 to Center Director, Mitchell Sogin, for research entitled, “The Rare<br />
Biosphere and the Human Habitat,” part of the International Census of <strong>Marine</strong> Microbes.<br />
In addition, the Bay and Paul Foundations awarded a $1,000,000 challenge grant to<br />
create the Faculty Support Endowment Fund. New foundations to the MBL showed<br />
their support in 2008 as well. The Harken Foundation of Chicago provided a challenge<br />
grant of $250,000 to help raise endowment for the Ecosystems Center’s Semester in<br />
Environmental Science Program for undergraduates.<br />

The year 2008 was also significant in the<br />
area of planned giving at the MBL. The<br />
legacy of two devoted MBL alumni and<br />
researchers, Arthur and Laura Colwin,<br />
continued with the receipt of a remarkable<br />
bequest valued at nearly $5,000,000.<br />
Last year the Annual Fund saw a 47%<br />
increase, thanks to the inspired leadership<br />
of several board members. We hoped we<br />
could reproduce and even exceed those<br />
results in 2008. I am pleased to report<br />
that once again MBL Trustees, helped<br />
along by more than a thousand alumni,<br />
scientists and friends, made this happen<br />
with a record total of $957,764 in this allimportant<br />
unrestricted category of funding.<br />
We look forward to breaking this record in<br />
2009 by raising a landmark $1,000,000 for<br />
the Annual Fund.<br />
As we reported last year, the MBL is in<br />
the early stages of a campaign to raise<br />
significant funds to advance initiatives in<br />
several important areas: Environment &<br />
Human Well-Being, Discovery Research<br />
& Education, Regenerative Biology &<br />
Medicine, Capital Projects, and Annual<br />
Operating Support. Many of these<br />
initiatives further our existing scientific<br />
and educational goals, while others expand<br />
our core expertise into new areas. Still<br />
others meld disciplines to tap emergent<br />
discoveries. Between June of 2006 and the<br />
end of 2008, the MBL raised an astonishing<br />
$65 million in support of these important<br />
initiatives.<br />
Not included in the year-end figures was<br />
another momentous achievement in<br />
the life of the institution. Thanks to the<br />
efforts of Director and CEO Gary Borisy<br />
and Director of Development and External<br />
Relations Pamela Hinkle, the MBL actively<br />
sought support for its programs in the<br />
$1 billion Massachusetts Life Sciences<br />
bill that was signed into law on June 16,<br />
2008. With broad-reaching support from<br />
legislators including Senate President<br />
Therese Murray, Senator Robert O’Leary,<br />
Representatives Matthew Patrick and Eric<br />
Turkington, and countless others from<br />
around the Commonwealth, a $10 million<br />
authorization to fund infrastructure<br />
improvements in support of research<br />
and education at the MBL was included<br />
in the legislation. On November 17,<br />
2008, Governor Deval Patrick held a<br />
press conference at the MBL to announce<br />
that the $10 million would be released<br />
in support of the renovation of Loeb<br />
<strong>Laboratory</strong>. Speaking about the $1 billion<br />
Massachusetts Life Sciences Act he said<br />
he was “. . . delighted to see part of this<br />
important funding put to use with the<br />
vital research being done at the <strong>Marine</strong><br />
<strong>Biological</strong> <strong>Laboratory</strong> in Woods Hole.”<br />
This first year of my tenure as co-chair of<br />
the Development Committee, along with<br />
Chris Weld, has been a phenomenal one for<br />
MBL fundraising. I am proud of what we’ve<br />
accomplished and wish to acknowledge<br />
the superb work by the MBL’s Director and<br />
CEO, Gary Borisy, the external relations<br />
staff, and my fellow Trustees. It is, however,<br />
to our generous donors whose names<br />
appear on the following pages—as well as<br />
those who wish to remain anonymous—<br />
that I extend special thanks for your faith<br />
in, and ongoing support of, the <strong>Marine</strong><br />
<strong>Biological</strong> <strong>Laboratory</strong>.<br />

$1,000,000 and up<br />
The Howard Hughes Medical Institute awarded<br />
$15 million for top-to-bottom renovations of the<br />
Loeb <strong>Laboratory</strong>, home of the MBL’s renowned<br />
discovery courses. This award was leveraged<br />
through a $10 million commitment of state funds<br />
contained in the Massachusetts Life Sciences Act.<br />
A bequest of $4,950,000 from the Estate of Laura<br />
Hunter Colwin was received in 2008. Laura and her<br />
husband Arthur Colwin were students at the MBL<br />
in the 1930s who later married and returned to<br />
conduct research at the MBL nearly every summer.<br />
In 2002 the Colwins made a gift of $2.3 million to<br />
establish the Laura and Arthur Colwin Endowed<br />
Summer Research Fellowship Fund in the fields of<br />
cell and developmental biology.<br />
Patricia and Charles Robertson contributed<br />
$2,000,000 to establish the Robertson Education<br />
Discretionary Fund. Charles Robertson’s mother<br />
was a student and researcher at the MBL and<br />
Patricia Robertson is a member of the MBL Board<br />
of Trustees, class of 2012.<br />
George and Harmon Logan pledged $1,500,000<br />
to endow the MBL’s Science Journalism Program<br />
which has been renamed in their honor. The<br />
program provides professional science journalists,<br />
editors, and broadcast journalists with the<br />
opportunity to immerse themselves in the<br />
processes of basic biomedical and ecosystems<br />
research. They pledged an additional $100,000<br />
over four years to the Annual Fund.<br />
An Anonymous donor contributed $1,500,000<br />
to support Women in Ecological Science. MBL<br />
Ecosystems senior scientist Zoe Cardon is the<br />
initial recipient of this support.<br />
The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation awarded $1,215,100<br />
for the period 2008-2010 to support research<br />

The Burroughs Wellcome Fund granted $622,000 to<br />
support the Physiology course from 2008-2010, the<br />
Molecular Mycology course from 2009-2011, and the<br />
2008 Frontiers in Reproduction symposium.<br />
The David and Lucile Packard Foundation awarded<br />
$600,000 to support research by Ecosystems Center<br />
senior scientist Jerry Melillo on the impact of biofuels<br />
on global climate change.<br />
Robert and Margot Haselkorn contributed $500,000<br />
to the Faculty Support Endowment in the Bay Paul<br />
Center, fulfilling one half of the matching gift<br />
requirement of the Bay and Paul Foundation grant<br />
listed previously.<br />
The G. Unger Vetlesen Foundation renewed its grant of<br />
$350,000 to support the Bay Paul Center, MBL <strong>Marine</strong><br />
Resources operations, and provide unrestricted funds.<br />
Porter W. Anderson, Jr. contributed $200,000 to the<br />
Directors Development Fund, Annual Fund, and the<br />
Bernard Davis Scholarship.<br />
