Kleindinst) Brown-MBL Graduate Program in Biological and environmental sciences One of the most significant events in the MBL’s recent history is the creation of our joint Ph.D. program with Brown University. The Brown-MBL Graduate Program in Biological and Environmental Sciences is the perfect marriage of the complementary strengths of Brown and the MBL. The program offers students research opportunities in areas such as astrobiology; biological and environmental physics; cell and developmental biology; ecology and evolutionary biology; ecosystems science; environmental change; genetics, genomics, and proteomics; global infectious diseases; immunology and pathology; molecular biology and biochemistry; phyletics; and physiology. Sixteen Ph.D. candidates are currently enrolled in the joint program. In 2007, five new first-year graduate students were matriculated, April Shiflett made history as the program’s first graduate, and fellow student Justin Widener defended his doctoral thesis. Also in 2007 Marselle Alexander- Ozinskas completed the program with a Master’s degree. Now in its fourth year, the program is successfully promoting cooperation among researchers and making it possible for students to work with investigators and faculty at both institutions. Brown-MBL faculty partnerships continued to flourish in 2007, with new paths for collaborative research created between a wide variety of Brown departments and all of the major research centers at the MBL. In 2007, 19 MBL scientists held joint faculty appointments at Brown, while five Brown faculty members held MBL appointments.
