A cochlear implant can help deliver crucial improvements in your child’s
hearing when compared to hearing aids. In a recent Nucleus study, children
tested showed a significant improvement in just three months after receiving
their cochlear implant (See figure 2). 7
The tests conducted were structured parent interview questionnaires, called
IT-MAIS (Infant Toddler Meaningful Auditory Integration Scale) and MAIS
(Meaningful Auditory Integration Scale). These tests allowed the parents to
answer questions on their child's auditory skill development.

implants at the same time (simultaneous bilateral implantation).
Other bilateral cochlear implant recipients start with one
cochlear implant, and then follow-up with a second cochlear
implant on the opposite ear (sequential bilateral implantation).
There are a variety of reasons recipients may consider either
option. Whether considering simultaneous or sequential
bilateral implantation, it is important for you to discuss this
option with your hearing healthcare provider to determine
the best approach for your child.

Before any cochlear implant surgery, it is important to talk to your doctor about CDC guidelines for
pre-surgical vaccinations. Cochlear implants are contraindicated for patients with lesions of the auditory
nerve, active ear infections or active disease of the middle ear.
Cochlear implantation is a surgical procedure, and carries with it the risks typical for surgery. You
may lose residual hearing in the implanted ear. Electrical stimulation may result in some side effects,
including ringing in the ear, stimulation of the facial nerve; in rare cases this may cause pain. Though
rare, it is possible that additional surgery may be required at some point to resolve complications with
a cochlear implant.
