RICHARD W. HEMINGWAY PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLARSHIP-A
scholarship endowed by friends and students of former Professor and Interim
Dean Hemingway.
JUNELL F AMIL Y PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLARSHIPS--The scholarships
are endowed by the families of Frank Junell, civic leader and longtime
supporter of higher education in Texas, State Representative Robert Junell
('77) and Dan Junell ('85). The scholarships are awarded to graduates of
Angelo State University nominated by the President of Angelo State
University.
GEORGE H. MAHON FELLOWSHIPS--A scholarship grant endowed by
the Litton Foundation in honor of Mr. Mahon, the distinguished former
Congressman from Lubbock. These fellowships are awarded to worthy
recipients in any class.
OWEN W. McWHORTER ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP--Created to honor
Owen W. McWhorter by the Lubbock law firm of McWhorter, Cobb &
Johnson, the scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving second- or thirdyear
student.
OWEN McWHORTER TUITION SCHOLARSHIP--A scholarship
endowment established by Mr. & Mrs. Ray 1. Diekemper, Jr. to honor
Lubbock attorney Owen W. McWhorter. The recipients are encouraged to
adhere to the high ethical standards set by Mr. McWhorter.
JOE H. NAGY SCHOLARSHIP--A scholarship endowed by his wife and
children in honor of Lubbock attorney Joe H. Nagy, former President ofthe
State Bar of Texas.
G. HOBERT AND AILEEN HACKNEY NELSON SCHOLARSHIP FUND­
-A scholarship grant endowed by longtime Lubbock resident Mrs. Nelson,
the late Mr. Nelson and their children. The scholarships are awarded
annually to second- or third-year students.
PHELAN PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLARSHIPS--Endowed by Judge Robert
Bean Professor Marilyn E. Phelan and her husband, Harold, an attorney in
Levelland. The scholarships are awarded to two Lubbock Christian Univ.
graduates nominated by the President of Lubbock Christian University.

RUNGE/HOWARD SCHOLARSHIPS--Scholarship honoring the late Judge
Bob Robertson endowed by Houston attorney and Law School Foundation
President Barbara K. Runge and her husband, Rusty Howard.
W.F. SHIVER SCHOLARSHIP--A scholarship established in honor of W.F.
Shiver, Superintendent of Post schools. The fund is endowed by Judge David
E. and Larissa Shiver Keltner ('86) of Fort Worth.
EDWARD R. AND JO ANNE M. SMITH SCHOLARSHIP--A scholarship
presented by Lubbock attorney Edward R. Smith and his wife, Jo Anne. The
scholarship is awarded to a deserving student in any class.
JOHN H. SPLAWN, JR. ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP--A scholarship
established in honor of trial attorney Johnny Splawn who practiced law in
Lubbock from 1952 until his death in 1988. The fund is endowed by
Splawn's law partner, John Simpson ('74) and his wife, Carolyn Simpson.
CURT F. STEIB, JR. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP--A scholarship
awarded annually to a student in financial need in memory of Curt Steib, Jr.,
a member of the Class of 1977. The grant is endowed by his family,
classmates, and friends.
TEXAS TECH LAW SCHOOL FREEDOM SCHOLARSHIPS-- A
scholarship fund created to assist students who have overcome serious social,
economic, educational or physical handicap in attaining a legal education.
W.D. WILSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP--A scholarship awarded
annually by the children of the late Lubbock attorney, W.D. Wilson, and
presented through the Ex-Students' Association.
NAMED SCHOLARSHIP DONORS
JUSTICE JAMES G. DENTON SCHOLARSHIP--Established by the Denver
City law firm of New and New, the scholarship is awarded in memory of
Justice Denton's service on the Texas Supreme Court.

to aid a deserving law student from EI Paso.

JOHN E. THOMASON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP--Presented in honor
of the late Midland attorney by his family and friends.
LOAN FUNDS
AL VIN R. AND ALETHA FAYE ALLISON LOAN FUND--Fund to
provide short-term loans to law students in need of financial assistance,
endowed by the late Alvin R. Allison and Mrs. Allison of Fort Worth.
JUDGE DAN BLAIR LOAN FUND-- Funds available to students for shortterm
loans in the name of Judge Blair who served as District Judge for
Lubbock, Hockley, Cochran and Crosby counties, 1936-51.
JOSIE BUBANY MEMORIAL LOAN FUND--Established by friends,
family and students to honor the memory of the late Josie Bubany, wife of
Professor Charles P. Bubany.
HUNT, RASCHKE, ROBISON & WEINSTEIN LOAN FUND--Fund
established by the Student Bar Association in honor of the winning team and
coach of the 1979 National Moot Court Competition.
JUDGE MARVIN JONES LOAN FUND--Funds for short-term loans to law
students made available by the late Judge Jones, a leader in the establishment
of Texas Tech, a former Congressman from West Texas, and former Sr.

Judge of the u.s. Court of Claims.
JUDGE E.E. JORDAN LOAN FUND--Fund for law students in
unanticipated, short-term financial difficulties, provided by Judge Jordan,
retired from the 47th District Court in Amarillo.
VICTOR H. LINDSEY MEMORIAL FUND--Fund for loans and other
financial assistance to law students in need, created by the Lubbock County
Bar Association and friends ofthe late Judge Victor H. Lindsey of the 72nd
District Court, at the suggestion of his widow, Mrs. Lindsey.
DREW SIMPSON MEMORIAL FUND--Fund to aid students in financial
difficulty, established by the family, colleagues, and friends of Drew
Simpson ('74) on his death in February, 1972.
TEXAS TECH LAW REVIEW LOAN FUND--Fund established for
members of the Texas Tech Law Review staff.
E. WAYNE THODE MEMORIAL LOAN FUND--Fund established by
students, colleagues, and friends of E. Wayne Thode, a Visiting Professor
:luring Fall, 1979 from the University of Utah, for his contribution to and
interest in quality legal education.

MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. A WARD--Cash award honoring the
American civil rights leader given to a graduating student who has worked
to realize Rev. King's dream in preparing for law practice. Presented by civil
rights and poverty lawyers practicing in West Texas.
JUDGE KEN G. SPENCER A WARD--Cash award given to the student
whose propensity to survive in law school by dogged persistence or agility
to adapt to adversity, ability or disability, or sheer force of personality or
charisma, appeals to the admiration of the faculty, presented by the late Judge
Ken G. Spencer of Crane, in memory of Bertha and George Whipple.

ORDER OF BARRISTERS--Trophies and certificates from the law firm of
Carr, Fouts, Hunt & Wolfe to students selected as members of the national
Order of Barristers for having exhibited excellence and attained high honors
through the art of courtroom advocacy.
JUDGE MEADE F. GRIFFIN A WARD--Cash award from Judge Griffin's
former briefing attorneys to the graduating law student who, through
industry, perseverance, integrity, and character, has best utilized the law
school experience to improve and prepare for service to the profession and
to mankind.
GEORGE W. AND SARAH H. DUPREE A W ARD--Cash award and
inscription of name on a permanently displayed plaque to the member of the
graduating class who, in the opinion of the student's colleagues, best
exemplifies the ability desired in one soon to join the legal profession.
OUTSTANDING PROFESSOR OF THE YEAR--Certificate and inscription
of name on a permanently displayed plaque to the faculty member voted by
the student body as the outstanding professor in an election conducted by the
Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity.

DISTINGUISHED
ALUMNUS
Martin W. Dies is a 1974 graduate of the Texas
Tech University School of Law and he holds a B.A.
from the University of Texas at Austin. He began
his legal career as an associate, later becoming a partner, in the law firm of Stephenson,
Thompson & Dies, of Orange, Texas. Since 1984 he has been a partner in the law firm of
Dies & Hile, L.L.P., which has offices in Orange and Austin, Texas.
Martin Dies is a lawyer's lawyer; he tries the most complex and difficult cases heard in the
courts ofthe United States. He is admitted to practice before the United States Supreme
Court, the United States Court of Appeals for the 5 th and 11 th Circuits and to the United
States District Court in the Eastern and Southern District of Texas as well as the United
States District Court for the Western District of Louisiana. His work in complex litigation
has led to his appointment as Chair of the Trustee Advisory Committee for the National
Gypsum Company Trust Facility, to the Board of Directors ofthe Austin Company of
Cleveland, Ohio, and to the Property Damage Advisory Committee of the Celotex Asbestos
Property Damage Trust Facility. He has served as Co-Chair ofthe Official Committee of
Asbestos Claimants of the National Gypsum Company Bankruptcy Proceedings.
Notwithstanding his deep involvement at the national level in major complex litigation, he
has also found time to serve as Chair of the Labor and Employment Law Section ofthe State
Bar of Texas and was a Founding Member and Advisory Trustee of the John Gray Institute
of Lamar University. These contributions to the State Bar of Texas and to our state
university system build on Martin Dies' national connections and the experience that comes
with being a primary litigator in many ofthe most important cases of this Century.
Martin Dies specializes in construction and environmental-related class action litigation. He
is a recognized expert in the field of asbestos property damage cost recovery, having filed
the first such case in the country in 1981. In a later case, he filed suit on behalf of a public
university and recovered the first punitive damage award in the history ofthe litigation. He
has represented States Attorney Generals and numerous governmental entities in several
states in similar litigation. He is currently serving as Special Deputy Attorney General for
the States of Hawaii and Utah and is also counsel for the class of Texas political
subdivisions consisting of counties, cities, public school districts and public universities in
similar cases.
Only the best lawyers are selected to work on important cases. When those important cases
are also complex, many great lawyers are involved. To be selected out of this elite group to
serve as a leader surely is the mark of what it means to be a lawyer's lawyer 0 Martin W.
