Because contemporary art never ceases to reinvent itself, the project is accompanied
by a second phase consisting of exhibitions of cutting-edge contemporary art in various
creative centres along the Côte d’Azur. These venues allow for a complementary
or a different vision of art to that put forward by the historic exhibition that forms
part of the first phase of this project. Another aim of this second phase is to
examine the identity of these contemporary art venues through the projects or
events associated with them. These venues include: l’Espace de l’Art Concret at
Mouans-Sartoux, the Theatre de la Photographie et de l’Image in Nice, The Carros
International Contemporary Art Centre, the Malmaison Art Centre in Cannes, the
Magnelli Museum, Ceramics museum in Vallauris, the Botox[s] Network consisting of
The André Villers Photography Museum in Mougins, The Station, La Maison/galerie
singulière, La Maison abandonnée/Villa Cameline, De l’Art Publishers, the Catherine
Issert, Depardieu, Sandrine Mons, Sapone, Sintitulo, Espace A Vendre and La Marine
galleries, l’Atelier Soardi, l’Hôtel Windsor in Nice but also Documents d’artistes,
Vidéochroniques, the Ambulante Gallery, Artmandat, Le Dojo, Le Module, no-made, la
Conciergerie and l’Eclat, the Nice Cinémathèque, les Abattoirs –Chantier Sang Neuf in
Nice, the Nice Urbanism and Architecture Forum, the Hartung Bergman Foundation in
Antibes, the Bernar Venet Foundation in Le Muy, l’Atelier Expérimental in Clans and
the International Perfumery Museum in Grasse…
This event is the sequel to The Côte d’Azur and Modernity Exhibition 1918 – 1958,
organized in 1997 by thirty or so establishments in the Alpes-Maritimes region.
The catalogue, Contemporary Art and the Côte d’Azur - An Area for Experimentation,
1951 – 2011 will be published by Presse du Réel Publishers / JRP Ringier and will
be available in French and English. Expected release date: June 2011.
The Contemporary Art and the Côte d’Azur Association are organizing an international
conference on Thursday September 29 th , Friday September 30 th and Saturday October
1 st in collaboration with Nice Sophia Antipolis University. For more information,
