San Francisco Bicycle Coalition | 2011 Annual Report

This yearmarked the 40th anniversary of the 

San Francisco Bicycle Coalition. In addition to celebrating four decades of increasingly effective 

bicycle advocacy, in 2011 we also realized significant, on-the-ground wins for better biking. 

Thanks to the support of our 12,000 members and the individuals, businesses and foundations 

who gave generously to our organization, we welcomed record numbers of people to biking 

in San Francisco, ushered in new and innovative bike lanes and projects, and reached tens of 

thousands of people with our safety and education outreach.

All totaled, 2011 was a banner year for San 

Francisco bicycling, one that helped move the 

City toward its official goal of 20 percent of 

trips by bike by 2020, and helped to transform 

San Francisco into a world class city for 

bicycling. Here is a recap of some of the 

biggest victories for better biking: 

Huge Increase in Number of 

People Biking 

Thanks in part to our advocacy, 2011 showed 

a dramatic increase in the number of people 

biking in San Francisco. The 2011 City of 

San Francisco Bicycle Count Report showed 

a 71% increase in the number of people bicycling 

in San Francisco in the last five years. 

At nearly all of the 23 counting stations 

throughout the city, the number of people 

biking was up—often dramatically. 

Market Street, with its green, protected 

bikeways, showed one of the greatest jumps 

in ridership: A massive 115% increase from 

2006 and a 43% increase since 2010. The San 

Francisco Bicycle Coalition advocated for the 

Market Street separated green bikeways, and 

it’s clear that this improvement is welcoming 

more people to bike on this key corridor. 

Fell and Scott Streets also showed one of the 

highest growths: 108% increase of ridership 

in the last five years, showing the real need 

for better biking conditions and our continued 

Fell/Oak campaign work. 

The Executive Summary of the 2011 City of 

San Francisco Bicycle Count Report says it 

best: “One thing is certain, more and more 

San Franciscans are riding bicycles every 

year.” One other thing is clear: if you build 

better bike lanes, people will come.

Connecting the City 

Our vision for a safer Fell Street. 

Just one year after the San Francisco Bicycle 

Coalition introduced our Connecting the City 

vision for safe, crosstown bikeways, we’re 

already moving key projects forward. Thanks 

to our work, the City began building out the 

heart of the Bay to Beach bikeway, including 

a parking-protected bikeway on JFK Drive and 

taking on the creation of separated bikeways 

of three critical blocks of Oak and Fell Streets, 

linking the Wiggle and Panhandle as an official 

City project. The City also moved forward 

with planning for a major overhaul of Market 

Street, and made improvements to the current 

green separated bikeway on this crucial 

biking street—all thanks to our advocacy. 

Meanwhile, we helped the City advance a 

separated bikeway on Cargo Way, along the 

eastern waterfront, and began promoting 

opportunities to pilot excellent new bikeways 

on the Embarcadero and Polk Street through 

the upcoming America’s Cup events. 


Bike the Vote 

This year saw huge election victories for 

better biking. The 2011 Mayoral candidates 

were the most bike-friendly in San Francisco’s 

history. All of the major candidates answered 

our substantive questionnaire, and we were 

thrilled to see so many candidates publicly 

recognize the growing importance of building 

complete, crosstown bikeways and better 

biking policies. 

The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition is proud 

to have played a leading role in crafting, 

campaigning and helping to pass Proposition 

B, Millions for Great Streets, which provides 

hundreds of millions of dollars for muchneeded 

repaving and new bicycle, walking 

and streetscape projects. 

Family Biking 

For years, the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition 

has been the leading local resource for youth 

and family biking outreach and education. In 

2011, we expanded our programs by offering 

our first on-road and in-class Family Biking 


classes. This four-part class series covers 

everything from biking while pregnant to 

biking your child to school. In 2012, we plan 

to teach these courses in Spanish and Chinese 

as well, reaching even more families across 

the city. 

In 2011, we also launched the first version 

of our online Family Biking Guide, a comprehensive 

how-to manual for all stages of 

family biking. While our Family Biking Classes 

are focused on supporting San Francisco 

families, the Family Biking Guide reaches 

beyond the Bay Area and offers great 

information for families living elsewhere. 

We’re proud that parents and caregivers 

across the country have downloaded our free 

Family Biking Guide. 

In 2011, we also expanded our work with Safe 

Routes to Schools, making it easier, safer and 

more fun for kids to walk and bike to school. 

In 2011, as in years past, we co-hosted Bike 

to School Day. In its third year, the 2011 Bike 

to School Day was record-breaking, with over 

2,000 participants! 

This year’s Bike to Vote campaign was better than ever. This year, we expanded our Safe Routes to Schools work.

We taught a record number of people through our education work. 

Bike Education 

The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition is proud 

to be the leading resource for street safety 

in San Francisco. In 2011, we taught a record 

number of people the rules of the road and 

how to ride safely and predictably. From the 

Presidio to the Excelsior, we hosted dozens of 

courses across the city. Beyond our in-person 

classes, we distributed safety materials to over 

100,000 people via direct mail, e-mail, social 

media, and streetside outreach. 

In 2011, the SF Bicycle Coalition was also 

chosen by the San Francisco Municipal 

Transportation Agency to lead the next three 

years of bicycle safety courses, including 

innovative curriculums and training for new 

Taxi drivers and MUNI Operators. 

Record-Breaking 

Bike to Work Day 

This year’s Bike to Work Day was recordbreaking, 

with bikes accounting for 75% of 

morning traffic on Market Street (at Van Ness). 

The green bike lanes were full of seasoned 

bike riders, as well as hundreds of people 

biking to work for the first time. 

The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition hosts 

one of the most robust Bike to Work Day 

events in the nation, and the 2011 event was 

no exception, with 25 Energizer Stations 

scattered about the city and hundreds of SF 

Bicycle Coalition volunteers encouraging and 

supporting those biking to work. 

Creating Great Streets for All 

Our Great Streets Project, a three-year 

campaign to help the City pilot and scale up 

innovative streetscape designs, celebrated 

the year of the parklet in 2011. Thanks to our 

work talking to hundreds of business owners 

around the city, dozens of community groups 

and our peers in City agencies, we were able 

to help San Francisco realize scores of parklets 

on the ground, and many more queued up. 

Thanks in part to our outreach, parklets are a 

household name in San Francisco and around 

the country. 

The Great Streets Project also collaborated 

with our friends at Livable City as well as the 

SFMTA to build the community support and 

City infrastructure to test an expansion of the 

Sunday Streets program. Thanks to our work, 

the City is piloting a monthly route in the 

Mission, helping transform our streets into 

more people and bike-friendly spaces.
