Message From the President
Seasons Greetings !!
It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to the year 2011, as the new
President of the SLA Asian chapter. Year 2010 was very momentous one,
full of activities and generated lot of interest and curiosity. The past
President Ms Kyoko Sato and her team did their best to keep the chapter
alive and kicking. ICoASL 2011, happening in Tokyo during Feb 2011 is a
turning point, as its moving out of India, thanks to Japan SLA. I only hope
Vol. 7 | Issue 1 | 2011
this conference and other events will go to all participating countries, thus making the
Chapter truly Asian !!
During 2011, we would like to have 'more members', 'more communication, 'more events'
and 'more learning and sharing'. I hereby call upon all the existing members to attract
more professionals into our fold so that Asian chapter becomes a force to recon with,
globally. SLA being a 'not- for- profit' organization, provides lot of scope for development
of the community and throws up few challenges.
The chapter in collaboration with Business and Finance Division and few sponsors have
been able to promote three awards whereby the winners will be assisted to travel and
attend the SLA annual conference at Philadelphia, USA, during June 2011. More details are
available in the following pages and also in the chapter portal. I invite all members to make
use of these opportunities. In this connection, many other chapters and divisions have
announced several awards.
Beginning next year, the selection of the chapter board will be more streamlined as we plan
to constitute new ' Nomination committee', which will draft guidelines and deploy the
same for the board of 2012. We also plan to bring in more method and procedures in our
activities to increase transparency, accountability and buy-in from members.
Please join me in wishing the very best for the Board of 2011 and also come out with your
ideas and suggestions to take this chapter to newer heights.
Warm regards,
I am sure that many of us have considered the possibility of
travelling to places such as India, but there always seem to
be many challenges to actually going. These can include the
issues we face in learning about different cultures and also
the 16-20 hour flight to get there.
The Libraries and Information Services in Astronomy
Conferences (LISA) are held every four years, each in a
different country. They are quite small, usually about 100
delegates, and concentrate on issues pertinent to the
astronomical community and specialised scientific research
communities. This international community is very
cooperative and although meetings are four years apart,
they are seen as an opportunity for colleagues to put faces to
the names with whom they interact regularly via web and
internet services.
In early December 2009, the LISA Organising Committee
advised that it would like to honour a group of librarians
considered to be the LISA mentors, for their unique services
rendered by their dedication to the profession and which
need to be emulated by the new generation of librarians.
Four librarians from the USA, six librarians from India and
two former astronomy librarians from Australia, Robyn
Shobbrook and I, were to be honoured at this ceremony. The
felicitation ceremony was a very moving experience for us
all.
The conference proceedings will be published in due course
as part of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific Conference
Series.
The LISA VI was to held from 14-17 February 2010 at the
International University Campus of Astronomy and
Astrophysics (IUCAA), based within the University of Pune
Campus. Pune University is referred to as the Oxford of the
East.
Three years ago at the SLA Annual Conference 2006, I
shared a room with two SLA members from Pune, Meera
Gaikaiwari and Pradnya Joshi and the LISA Conference
offer the opportunity to meet with them again. Meera
suggested I present a seminar to the local library community
prior to the LISA Conference. This seminar was attended by
a group of about 30 people and included students, library
professionals and IT professionals. My topic was based on
my past work, Ontologies, Thesauri and metadata standards
as resource discovery tools. Meera and the current Asian
Chapter Secretary, then arranged for us to meet for dinner
which was very pleasant.
Notes on a recent trip to India
SLA Asian Chapter News | Vol. 7 | Issue 1 |
2011
As the International Conference on Digital Libraries (ICDL)
was to be held shortly after, February 23-27, I decided that
this was an opportunity not to be missed. ICDL is also held
every 4 years and the chief organiser is Dr Debal Kar, a noted
SLA Asian Chapter representative and former Asian
Chapter President. SLA was a co-sponsor of the event and
arranged for the SLA President, Anne Caputo, to be a
keynote speaker. There were over 600 delegates from 40
countries with many of the keynote speakers were from
Europe, and one from Australia. A gathering for SLA
members was held on the last evening of the conference and
was great to meet these local members and see their
enthusiasm for our profession and our association.
ICDL breakfast sessions were held each morning for a group
of about 15 delegates. These three sessions covered the
topics of standards, multilingual issues in the digital world
and copyright. Six speakers were given up to 10 minutes to
put forward their view and this included time for questions.
It was a very interesting method of brainstorming, and we
came away enlightened from the discussions.
Three items in particular from these sessions highlighted
differences between Western countries and India:
• Whereas newspapers are in decline in the West, this is
not the case in India. We were advised that about 20 new
titles have appeared in the last five years and
newspapers are still considered a very important media
here.
• India is a multilingual country. There are 22 official
languages and hundreds of dialects - some of which do
not have a written form; Hindi is taught throughout
India and declared by their Constitution as the official
language. English however, is the language of business.
In effect, most people speak at least three languages –
their traditional regional language, Hindi and English.
• Power outages and brown-outs happen often, so most
businesses and institutions have generators that cut-in
automatically. Institutions and large businesses do rely
on the internet, but this can be slow and unreliable,
because of connectivity problems. There is then an issue
regarding the integrity of digital resources that was
highlighted at ICDL. It was also emphasised that
microfilms are still the only stable and reliable
preservation format. It is very easy to digitise resources
and not consider the issues of long-term access. It is our
responsibility to ensure that polices and resources are in
place for the preservation services required to support
our collections.
3
As this was my first trip to India, I decided to take advantage
of the opportunity and travel more widely accompanied by
my spouse.
We spent the days between the two conferences travelling.
Time was short which meant that we were changing cities
almost daily for a week, and there was just so much to see!
Some of our highlights for this part of the trip included:
• an overnight stay at a hill station south of Pune at
Mahabaleshwar;
• visiting Ghandi's ashram in Ahmedabad and an
amazing stepwell, and then having time with a colleague
and her family; flying to Jaipur to begin the trip referred
to as the Indian Golden Triangle of Jaipur, Agra (and the
Taj Mahal) and Delhi; and the ICDL conference in New
Delhi
The intensity caused by the density of every aspect of India
hits you. The density of population – both human and
animal; the traffic noise and congestion; the extremes of
beauty of the artistry in the buildings and artifacts and the
immense wealth compared to the poverty of many. But
colour is celebrated and most of the huge number and
variety of trucks and other vehicles are very colourfully
decorated.
Because the last two monsoons in India have been poor the
country was in drought. The south of the country especially
was dry and dusty. However, the Golden Triangle 's wide
plains of very fertile soil support crops of wheat, corn, sugar
cane, and potatoes which were all very green.
After Delhi we travelled south to Bangalore where Dr
Christina Birdie had arranged for us to stay at the Indian
Institute of Astrophysics. She is the librarian at this institute
and highly regarded for her work. In the Institute's library
one air-conditioned room has been set aside for rare
materials and a few instruments. The difficulty of preserving
these items is immense and many other institutions are still
grappling with how they may manage.
I was invited by TCS to attend the Special Libraries
Association (SLA), USA Annual Conference to
receive an international award at their Annual
Conference and Info Expo held at New Orleans
during 13th to 16th June. I was selected for the
award because I had won a contest for the best
write-up on "The greatest challenge facing the
information profession in developing countries
and what skills must the new business information
professional possess".
4
The Indian middle class now numbers some 90 million
people. Education is therefore very competitive, and school
children that we met all realised the importance of excellent
results. A high proportion of the professionals we met are
continuing their study or have a PhD.
At Pune University and especially at IUCAA, a large number
of the research community had relatives studying in
England, the USA or Australia.
My connections in India meant that we were able to hear
more personal stories of how people live and learn about
Indian culture. It seems that the lifestyle for professionals is
similar in all countries.
We were away for a month. Our overall impressions were of:
That things happen in 'Indian time', though the transport we
used was on time for us;
As labour is cheap and it is better to employ many people
rather than using mechanised methods.
Security is paramount, but we felt safe at all times; and
Regulations and standards on OHS issues vary greatly from
place to place.
I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to all those that
made this trip an amazing insight into life in India for
Patrick and I. This trip would not have been possible without
the support of the LISA VI Conference and especially its
Organising Committee.
I would like to thank those colleagues who took special time
and care to introduce us to their families, their lifestyles and
their culture and food. Some of these people had not met me
previously, and so their generosity was doubled. These
include Meera Gaikaiwari and Pradnya Yogesh in Pune,
Nishtha Anilkumar in Ahmedabad, Christina Birdie and
Geetha Sheshadri in Bangalore. I look forward to continuing
these friendships in the future.
SLA Asian Professional Award 2010:
An Experience of a Winner
8
Dr. Harish Chandra, Librarian, IIT Madras
At the outset, I am glad to express my gratitude to the
Chair-Award Committee, all members, President, SLA
Asia Chapter, Jury of the Award for considering my
name for the award. The sponsorer M/S Balani
Infotech, IGroup, as well as Asian Chapter deserve
deep appreciation as without their active support it
would not have been materialized to attend the
Conference. Primarily, the award has provided me an
opportunity to attend SLA Annual Conference and
INFO - EXPO at New Orleans, U.S.A during 13-16th
June 2010.
I utilized this opportunity to develop and renew my
professional relations with library and information
professionals from around the world through
participation in the technical sessions, registration,
inaugural and valedictory functions, visiting INFO-
EXPO. I met all SLA leaders at one place and heard all
candidates for SLA Board of Directors competing for
the election. I attended SLA Opening General Session
and Awards Presentation on 13th June 2010 and heard
keynote speakers James Carville and Mary Matalin. In
addition to this, I also delivered an invited talk on
Quality Assurance for Stakeholders through ISO
9001:2008 Standard : A Doorway for Asian Libraries.
This opportunity also strengthened my relations with
Indian professionals who attended the same.
Outstanding Achievement in
Business Librarianship Award
Business & Finance Division of the Special Libraries
Association (SLA) proudly announced Sushma Arora
as the recipient of the 2010 Outstanding
Achievement in Business Librarianship Award,
sponsored by BNA, Inc. in the SLA Annual
Conference 2010 at New Orleans, Louisiana, U.S.A.
Sushma Arora's initiative, business acumen and
tenacity have raised awareness of the critical role that
librarians serve at Tata Consultancy Services.
Her work transforming the delivery of library
services towards an embedded model at her branch is
exemplary. As a result of Sushma's efforts, librarians
-- now referred to as "domain information service
providers" -- are happier with the nature of their
work, and the company understands the value that
librarians bring to the table as "integral team
members for the business groups."
By redefining position descriptions and work
initiatives, Ms. Arora more clearly aligned her team
to the organization's goals. The organization
recognized the role of information professionals in
the success of the organization. This transformation
in the perception of librarians demonstrates the
potential for all information professionals to prove
their value in their organizations.
My SLA Experience at New Orleans, USA
Background
Special Libraries Association (SLA), USA organizes an
annual conference each year in different states of America
and has done so since 1909. This year the conference was
organized at one of the most beautiful and serene states -
New Orleans. It is a life-time achievement and a great
opportunity for library and information science
professionals to attend this wonderful, scintillating
conference. SLA's corporate logo is “Connecting People
and Information”. In every sense the logo is true because it
gives an ample opportunity for information professionals
to acquire knowledge, expertise, and valuable skills by
learning from the experiences of others. Attendance at this
conference has nurtured my experiences and thoughts
which have been reshuffled several times through
discussion with renowned experts in the field of Library
and Information Science, and Knowledge Management
Professionals. I am now connected to several experts and
leading information professionals. This was my first visit
to the US and attendance at the SLA conference at New
Orleans. I would like to extend my personal thanks to the
Science and Technology Division for providing such
excellent hospitality. All the newcomers of the Science and
Technology Division were invited to a lavish lunch in one
of the renowned French quarter restaurants in New
Orleans.
