Librarians’ roles have continued to evolve, from ‘rip and ship’ results provider, to information
intermediary and subject expert; and now, to outreach specialist and research information
consultant. Learn tips to add a consultant’s perspective to your repertoire, and brighten up your
internal marketing and negotiation efforts.
Presented by a long-time practitioner who has worked on all sides of the reference desk and the
lab bench, this talk is an overview of what librarians can learn from consultants, including:
• what outside consultants can do that librarians can’t
• what librarians can do that consultants can’t and
• how to get the best leverage from your in-house advantages.
Biography
Josh Duberman is a Partner at Pivotalinfo LLC, providing ‘information for solutions in
business and technology’. He has more than 20 years of research information experience at
Applied Biosystems, SRI International, and as a consultant. Previously, he was a scientist at
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and at Chevron Research Company.
Mr. Duberman is a co-inventor of several patents, and has written numerous articles about the
information industry, searching techniques and information resources. His areas of expertise
include intellectual property, chemistry, biotechnology, pharmacology, toxicology, engineering,
competitive intelligence, technology transfer/commercialization, and information retrieval
issues.
