Granite
Axle Back
Engineered to defeat the
toughest jobsite.
We don’t make trucks. We build legends.
Throughout the twentieth century, America has been building at a
furious rate. And at the center of it all is Mack ® . The construction
industry relies on Mack trucks to handle the most challenging jobs.
After all, our machines are legendary. They last for decades. They
make money for their owners. They are synonymous with tough,
strong and powerful. Today, Mack proudly continues its long tradition
of building the best trucks on earth with the Granite ® Axle Back model.
Balanced design. Driving performance.
The Mack philosophy of Balanced Design is simple — all essential
components are engineered and built to work together. When the
engine, the transmission, the axles and the suspension are all made
by Mack, you get the best performance, the highest reliability and
reduced downtime. We’ve been satisfying customers with this
approach to truck building since the very first Mack roared to life, and
it has been fundamental to our legendary success ever since.
Forward thinking about
axle back engineering.
The Granite Axle Back model is part of the Granite series of trucks,
the most popular line of construction vehicles in America. This new
truck is engineered to conquer jobsite obstacles with ease. It’s
designed to make hard-working drivers comfortable and built to
reduce maintenance while boosting profits. This latest-generation
construction truck uses advanced materials designed
to provide unmatched strength for handling
bigger payloads and leverages
powerful Mack electronics to
run with impressive efficiency.
Cornerstone
Cornerstone
Chassis Chassis
Mack Custom
Crossmembers
A chassis subjected to more than
a century of brutal testing.
Mack has plenty riding on our Cornerstone chassis. After all, we
have a legendary reputation to uphold. It’s why Cornerstone went
through rigorous testing before it ever left the factory. Components
were tested for fatigue. The rails were stressed and relentlessly
checked for endurance.Trucks using the Cornerstone chassis were put
through punishing off-road courses. All to ensure the Granite Axle Back
model rides on a frame built to take everything you can throw at it.
The right crossmembers for the right job.
The crossmembers on the Cornerstone chassis were developed by
Mack design engineers and harshly tested by performance engineers.
The four main crossmember packages are made to work with specific
applications from dump and mixer to crane service and severe duty. You
can be sure you have the ideal chassis to handle maximum payload.
Choose your frame rail.
The new Mack frame rails are made from a high-strength, low-alloy
steel that’s quenched and tempered to a minimum yield strength of
120,000 p.s.i. It means you’ll work on a rail made to carry crushing
loads with ease. There’s a wide range of rail thicknesses available to
handle all applications. Plus, liners can be added to help you spec
with greater flexibility.
A cool new radiator.
The Granite Axle Back has a large radiator to provide greater cooling
power and help the truck run efficiently. The new radiator, charged air
cooler, condenser and recirculation shields make up an advanced,
balanced heat exchanger package that lowers operating temperatures.
A fan of efficiency.
An electronically controlled fan integrated into our Vehicle Management
and Control (V-MAC ® ) electronics system automatically knows when to
kick on and off. This ensures the fan runs only as much as needed to
maintain proper operating temperature. The new fan design is whisperquiet,
saves fuel and keeps dust kick-up to a minimum at dusty jobsites.
Isolating engine noise and vibration.
Run quietly. The Cornerstone chassis engine-mounting system better
isolates the powerplant to reduce noise, vibration and boost driver
comfort. A rubber cushioning system and proven three-point support
cradle the engine and promote long operating life.
Sealed axles keep dirt out and efficiency in.
UniMax steer axles are the first heavy-duty design ever to have
sealed, unitized hubs specifically for vocational work. This innovative
axle saves time, money and is virtually maintenance-free. UniMax
axles are precisely assembled in a controlled, clean environment
where they are robotically packed with synthetic grease. The hubs are
then sealed to provide long-lasting, maintenance-free lubrication. Dirt
and mud can’t get in to damage wheel bearings. UniMax axles are
rated from 12,000 lbs. to 23,000 lbs. to cover all applications.
The toughest drive axles just got better.
Mack has always been known for building the most durable, long-lasting
drive axles in trucking. Our premium model, the S462, is made from
nearly indestructible cast ductile iron and can handle up to 46,000 lbs.
without breaking a sweat. Our new axle — the S440 — is constructed
from fabricated steel and ideal for weights between 38,000 lbs. and
44,000 lbs. It’s been smartly engineered with a one-piece housing and
an integrated bowl cover that adds integrity while slowing wear and tear.
To improve suspension joint integrity, the S440 features square corners
that improve clamping force without distortion. Now, Mack axles use
R-Series industry standard wheel ends.
Versatility comes standard.
The Granite Axle Back can be configured to handle any vocational
application. With a wide range of Cornerstone chassis options plus a
variety of steer and drive axle capacities, these trucks can be outfitted to
perform tasks from lightweight duty to the most punishing work imaginable.
All while delivering supreme driver comfort and unmatched profitability.
Tough jobsites tamed.
The Granite Axle Back was designed from the start to overcome jobsite
obstacles. This powerfully engineered truck has amazing maneuverability
in tight spots. A muscular frame effortlessly handles the heaviest loads.
Drivers will work with more confidence thanks to the incredible visibility.
In short, the Axle Back model is built to conquer the toughest conditions
and build your bottom line.
A spacious cab packed with comfort.
Room. It’s one of the things all drivers want. The Granite Axle Back
model features a spacious cab with generous leg and belly room. The
ergonomically designed, electronic dashboard puts all commonly used
switches and controls within easy reach. Gauges are positioned for easy
reading to reduce eye strain. The driver’s seat is wide and comfortable
with a multi-adjustable design that cradles any size body. Variable cab
shock absorbers smooth bumpy roads while reducing driver fatigue. Cloth
inserts help the fabric breathe for cooling comfort on hot summer days.
Entry and exit are effortless due to the strategically placed steps.
Fenders that keep you from getting hit
with big bills.
Protect your hood — and wallet — better. Our uniquely styled, flexible
fender extensions make a bold design statement. They are positioned
over the top of the wheels to protect the hood and control splashing.
These sturdy fenders are long-lasting and are flexible in cold weather.
The underside is smooth so dirt and snow won’t accumulate.
Outshining the competition.
Here’s an example of bright thinking about lighting. The headlamp
covers are made from ultra-durable LEXAN ® . This polycarbonate
material absorbs the impact from flying jobsite debris far better than
sealed beam headlamps. Bulbs can be changed quickly and easily
without tools. To make driving around a jobsite safer at night, the
Granite Axle Back truck features perimeter lighting. These work lights
are mounted behind the chassis fender on either side of the truck to
illuminate areas underneath and on the sides. Obstacles are better
seen, so accidents are avoided.
C.T.I. is optional. But you’ll still want it.
Soft sand or mud is always difficult terrain, but not for a Mack with C.T.I.
Now, you can have the convenient, one-touch Central Tire Inflation system
factory-installed. C.T.I. gives drivers quick and effortless control of tire
pressure on the fly. You’ll get better traction on soft ground because the
tire footprint expands and keeps ruts shallow. Take your truck to places
previously inaccessible and work more productively.
Break a sweat working. Not cleaning.
Even cleaning is a cinch. The interior uses spray-and-wipe materials —
and you can quickly blow mud, dirt and debris out of your cab with our
factory-installed, pressurized-air line. One piece floor mats are easy to
wash. Keeping your work area spotless now requires very little effort.
Styling you can have your way.
The Axle Back model can be outfitted to your exact taste. Chrome
finish is available on the stylized mirrors, grille surround, grille bars,
bumpers and air intakes. You might as well make it look great. This
truck is built to last.
More time on the road; less time under
the hood.
The Granite Axle Back was thoughtfully engineered to reduce
maintenance and minimize labor. For example, Mack provides easy
access to air lines and the electrical harness. All air valves —
including the relay valve, ABS modulators and spring brake valves
— are centrally and conveniently located. Air and electrical lines are
properly supported and protected in brackets specially designed to
reduce fraying. All fittings feature reusable quick connects. Mack
uses fewer wires and connections to improve reliability. The electrical
system has an isolated grounding network to prevent catastrophic
failure — a feature you’ll only find on Mack trucks.
Prevent collisions with your bottom line.
The front bumper is available in either chrome or painted steel and
gives the truck its rugged good looks. It also saves money. The new
stylized bumper design lets you replace a section of the bumper —
instead of the entire bumper — if there’s damage. The towing access
is centered in the bumper to help keep the finish looking new.
Efficiency courtesy of advanced
electronics.
Here’s the one thing to remember about Mack electronics: it’s all
integrated and proprietary. Everything is designed to work together
for dependable operation and fewer hassles. The foundation of our
electronics is V-MAC. With hundreds of programmable features,
V-MAC helps you run at peak efficiency. From the trip recorder and
vehicle diagnostics to the electronic dash and PowerLeash engine
brake, V-MAC controls and monitors hundreds of vehicle parameters.
Connected to V-MAC is our Vehicle Information Profiler (V.I.P. ).
This large, in-dash display keeps drivers notified about engine/vehicle
performance, fuel economy, and trip data as well as maintenance and
PTO information.
Get the body you want with no sweat.
Mack components — step brackets, cable mount air tanks, exhaust stacks
and battery boxes — are always positioned forward on the chassis. This
ensures body compatibility while eliminating the high cost of relocating
components. The Granite Axle Back truck features the new, improved
Body Link II wire harness connectors. They are conveniently located in
the cab and on the chassis for quick body hookup. A body lamp signal on
the dash instantly indicates if the body is properly seated. No truck OEM
makes attaching a body so easy and economical.
