Note Certificates: 1. Summary The certificates issued by the commissioners of the provision law include date, a description of the item impressed including its value, and the name of the owner of the item. Court booklets and lists compiled by the county courts contain excerpts from the court proceedings and lists of authenticated certificates. Note During its session begun in May 1780 the General Assembly passed an act authorizing the governor to impress supplies needed by the American army. The governor appointed commissioners of the provision law in each locality to carry out the terms of the act. The commissioner, when he impressed property, gave the owner a certificate describing what was taken. Between 1781 and 1783 county courts held special sessions at which certificates were presented and authenticated, and booklets listing authenticated certificates were compiled and sent to Richmond for settlement. Two commissioners appointed to settle the claims recorded those for which they authorized payment, and warrants were issued by the auditor of public accounts. Commissioner's books, 1783. • Estate: 25 Feb 1793, Rockingham County, Virginia. 1793 WILL OF THOMAS BYAN (copy from Bryan family folder at the Harrisonburg- Rockingham Historical Society Library in Dayton, VA and has no will book or page number. However Rockingham County,VA Minute Book 2, Part 1, P. 126, says "at a court held for Rockingham, Monday the 25th Feb'y 1793...the last will and testament of Thomas Bryan Dec'd produced in court by Thomas Bryan and Wm. Bryan, executors therein named and proved" [the above from Loretta Layman who further states "I did not find the will in any index of Rockingham County wills, but that may well be because the probate copy was burned with many other Rockingham County records during the Civil War". She provided the following Will: In the name of God Amen I Thomas Bryan of the County of Rockingham & State of Virginia yeoman being of the age of Seventy two years and sencible feeling the decay of Nature although of perfect mind and memory calling to mind the mortallity of the Body and that it is appointed for all men once to die Do make and ordain this my last will and testament in the manner & form as follows Viz. First of all & imprimis I give & recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God who gave it and my body to the Earth to be buried in decent & Christian like manner at the dischresion of my of my under named Execrs not doubting but that I shall receive the same agin at the General resurrection of the just. And Secondly all Just and lawful debts and funeral charges to be paid and as tuching my worldly Estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me with in this life I give and bequeath in the following Manner viz. Item I give and bequeath unto my well beloved grand Daughter Hannah McDonnald thirty Acres of pine Land adjoining John Reevses place Item I give and bequeath unto my well beloved Son Thos Bryan one hundred and fifty Acres of Land whereon he now Dwells reserving two Acres whereon the Meeting house and grave yard Stands_Item.
