Cooper repeatedly lefqied to
Stamper's account of the incident as
"self-serving.
"His statement has to be viewed
with a critical eye. . . realizing that
now his motivation for talking to the
police is simply to cover his tracks."
Cooper told the jury.
Earlier this week, Catherine
for the defense.-Sreitner is the
Traffic study is due
The county is legally responsible
. for maintaining township roads.
However, in the past the township
has agreed to kick in part of road
change costs and in some cases has
paid entire bills.
THE TOWNSHIP has designated
$2.3 million for road improvements
this year and $1 million next year.
said John Spencer, township finance
director
Chuhran questioned the goal of the
study saying that at some of the in*
tersections it's obvious there are
problems.
Deciding what is needed to correct
the problem is unclear, said Casari,
explaining time signals vary between
$30,000 and $90,000. Widened
lanes or extra lanes are other options
that could alleviate traffic
problems.
mother of Josephine Czarnik, who
was Stamper's girlfriend when Hulbert
was killed.
"He's a good kid. I never had any
problem with him," Breitner said of
Stamper.
The defendant was at Breitoer's
home the evening Hulbert was shot
and was "really upset about something,"
she saii.
"1 tried to geiAttn. to talk to me,
but he wouldn't'" Breitner said.
Lloyd Stamper, who is not related
to the defendant and Michael Fulcher,
both Washtenaw County detectives,
testified Sbout the sequence of
events that occurred on the night of
the arrests. Both -said Stamper
appeared carefree at first and that
his demeanor changed when confronted
with Machacek's accusations.
Detective Stamper testified that
after bearing the Machacek tape.
Stamper said, "If I get a bold of the
little , HI kill him."
The defense also entered into evidence
testimony from Machacek's
trial, in which a former inmate of
the Washtenaw County juvenile correctional
facility said she overheard
Machacek admit he killed Hulbert
Circuit Court Judge Hairy Conlin
is scheduled to give instructions to
the jury today.
Machacek is to be sentenced Friday,
School union
probes workers
Continued from Pape 1
"It has come to our attention
that in many schools, especially elementary
schools, volunteers are
being used on a daily basis," wrote
Harrington. "We are presently investigating
the situation in each
school, and if it is our judgment
that volunteers or non-bargaining
unit members are doing the work
of laid-off employees or employees
whose hours have been cut we will
be forced to file an unfair labor
practice charge."
DAVID ABTLEY, school board
president said, "I do understand
their concerns, but we've always
used volunteers: As to the specific
issue raised, I think what they're
doing is the right thing — looking
into and researching the issue.
"You might assume it's a negative
letter, but there is concern
about a point" said Artley. "Anytime
you go through these kinds of
cuts, there's going to be concern
Wanted: More residents at Plymouth-Canton
school board workshops.
Board of Alucation members de*
cided Monday to send a copies of
their agendas .for sessions through
January to building administrators,
PTO presidents and to newspapers.
"We're hoping the papers might
publish them In advance so that people
will see what we're talking
about" said David Artley, board
president.
"The idea is to allow people the
opportunity to know what particular
topics we're going to talk about so
that they can be part of the discussions,
specifically at workshops,"
said Artley. "We really can't do it
with action items at regular meetings,
because it's a little more complex."
Usually, only about 10 people (in
addition to board members) attend
workshops, Artley estimated. •
The plan ties in with one of the
board's 1988-89 goals, "working to
improve communications both internal
and external."
outcome will be a "more Involved
public," said Artley.
"1 think if people are more informed.
then they tend to understand
what's going on." he said. "Being a
part of what's going on gives them
an opportunity to participate. Consequently
the feel they're involved in
the destiny of the school district —
and they should be, because it is all
of our kids. ^
"P think it's incumbent on the
board to make an effort to make
people aware of the opportunity to
participate, and the workshop is
where we really get into discussions
in detail," said Artley. "Out of workshops.
often come the action items at
subsequent regular board meetings."
about a variety of points."
Walter Bartnick, administrative
assistant for labor relations, said,
"I'm kind of surprised to get something
like that (letter). Volunteers
are something Plymouth-Canton
schools have used for years. So
have other districts.
"I'm just really surprised that if
we have parents coming in willing
to help, whether it's lunch, or helping
a particular child that r^eds
help, that the association at this
time would show 'a concern," he
said. "Volunteering is something
we will continue to encourage."
Ligato said the union "isn't taking
issue with volunteers in the
schools. Volunteers have always
worked in the schools. Where we
have a problem is where they are
replacing aides who've had their
hours cut or who have been laid off.
"We believe it's an unfair labor
practice to lay off aides, and then
solicit volunteers to do work they
were doing." I^£9to said.
