NATIONAL OFFICE - OFFICIAI, OPENING 

We have now moved into our new National Office and have 

confirmed that the official opening will be conducted 

during the 2000 Trap Nationals. It is to be on Tuesday the 

11th April. As this will be the day we shoot our Macintosh 

Team event, everyone will have the opportunity to attend 

and be part of the occassion. 

ONE SIDED 

During January the Sporting Shooters Association ofAust- 

ralia put together an excellent television commercial 

showing shooting as a great family sport and inviting the 

public to participate. What was the media's reaction to 

this? They went straight out and interviewed one of the 

most ardent anti firearm persons in Australia and put 

forward "at no cosV the views of this irrational individual 

during the news. 

It appears that no matter what positive side of legitimate 

firearm ownership and use is portrayed, the media is hell- 

bent on counteracting it. 

Recently I received an email fmm a member of the ACTA 

who is also a very successful businessman and supporter of 

the shooting sports. He put forward some very positive sug- 

gestions that may help in promoting our sport. Who knows, 

if we persist we may one day get our message across.

I NATIONAL 

PIONSHIPS 

Earlier this year a demonstration event in Clay Target shooting 

for disabled was held at Melbourne Gun Club. Three disabili- 

ties were represented - amputee, stroke and spinal cord injured. 

Even though numbers were small, such was the interest gener- 

ated by the event that the inaugural Australian National Cham- 

pionships for Clay Target shooting for the disabled are now 

planned for Brisbane, Queensland, to be held from 11 to 14 

April, 2000. The events will include Olympic Trap, Down the 

Line and some Points events. 

The Clay Target events will be held at the same venue and at 

the same time as the Australian Nationals for Pistol and Rifle 

shooting for the disabled. 

All disabled shotgun shooters are cordially invited to participate 

in these inaugural Championships. Please contact Col Tanner 

on 07 3325 3422 or 041 700 7121 to indicate your interest in 

attending. He will then be able to provide you with a pmgram 

and answer any other questions you may have.

STATE HANDICAP 

There were ten possibles in the Handicap, from the entry of 197, 

ranging from 11 to 22 metre. The V.C.T.A. again offered $1000 in 

added money, divided equally from 1st to 10th place, in addition to 

the usual prize money, so competition was very keen. 

The shoot-off went just 14 targets with Socrates Pilipasidis from 

Werribeflictorian, taking the Red Sash and Silver Victoria Badge 

with his 64/64. Second was Wayne Hawker Jeparit 63/64, third 

Robert Christopher Alexandra 62/63, fourth Carly Nielsen Wer- 

ribee 61/62, fiRh Lynne Curtis Bairnsdale, equal sixth Paul 

Jackson and Craig Patten, eighth Gavan Height, ninth Alan 

Patten and tenth Ron Glenn. Stacey Elsley Mornington took the 

Women's prize 49/50, Phillip Cleggett Hamilton the Juniors 67/68, 

and Fred Foon Wonthaggi Veterans 45/50. 

STATE DOUBLE RISE CHAMPIONSHIP. 

Entries totaled 182 in this dimcult discipline. Local Shooter Steve 

Atkins took the Red Sash and Silver Victoria Badge outright with 

an excellent 50150. Bill Eagle Sheppartan was overall second with 

his 49/50, and John Sleightholme Tamworth NSW 76/80 was third 

aRer a shoot off with 67/70. AA Grade first was Arthur Turner 

Warren NSW 76/80, second Ian Memck, third Glen Kable. In A 

Grade John Rowe Cerberus, took the honours with 56/60, from 

Brett O'Donnell and Alan Blease. B Grade first went to Alan 

Patten Numurkah 43/50 from Bany Wimshurst, and Luis Calan- 

dro. C Grade was won by Luca Emanuelli Metropolitan 46/60, 

with Jo-Anne Dean second, and Danny Hudswell third.

Wythe Tyrendarra Women 40150, and Alan Blease Melbourne,

STATE SINGLE BARREL CHAMPIONSHIP 

Numbers grew to 228 for the Single Barrel on the Saturday 

Morning. Again conditions were fine; the wind however was trou- 

blesome. Prize money was increased by $1150 for the Single and 

Double Barrel Championships, with extra Money paid to 5th place 

in each grade.

last chance to get into the State Teams. 203 shooters faced the 

starter; six possibles shot off for the Red Sash and Silver Victoria 

Badge. Glen Hayden Noorat 1801180 took the title from Kevin 

Wright Sebastopol 1791180, with Junior Tim Knight Bendigo in

The 6th National Sporting Clays Championship was held at the 

Thankyou to Echuca Club for hosting the Carnival so well, and the 

National Ground Wagga Wagga with assistance from the 

Ladies in the kitchen who fed us. No complaints were heard about 

Wagga Gun Club on the 27th and 28th of 

the use of the Canterbury Voice Release systems, expect them 

again next year.

The attendance at these Nationals was a little disappointing. 

Only 33 shooters contested the championship just one week aRer 

the Skeet Nationals. 

Visitors were attracted from Victoria. New South Wales and 

Queensland. Competition was conducted over three layouts with 

75 targets being shot each day The conditions were sunny with 

some wind around just to make the targets interesting. 

After a shootoff, Wagga member Barney Rooke won the Veteran 

section with a score of 1361160. In the Ladies section was won by 

Alison VanRee with a scare of 951150 and the Junior section was 

won by Michael Metry from Albury Wodonga with a score of 

921150.

Brewarrina GC conducted the State Night PS Cont championship 

in September as part of their annual continental carnival. Twenty- 

five shooters contested the Championship with well known local 

identity Col Betts, shooting the possible to win the event 1501150.

Well, for starters, the range of voice-achvated trap releases from Canterbury has brought a 

whole new dimension to the sport of clay-target shooting. Incorporating electronic and soft- 

ware technology activated through microphones, which respond only to the shooters call, 

this system is the biggest advancement since screw-chokes. 

Now, your call directly releases the target. There is no more reliance on a good puller to 

give you consistent targets. Imagine it - no more 'fast' or 'slow' targets. You are TOTALLY in 

control of the target release. It doesn't matter any more who you get on the scorer's seat, as 

they no longer have to "pull" the target for you. 

This system REALLY works. Have you shot at the new National Range in Wagga Wagga, or 

attended the NSW or Vic State Champs, or the National Skeet Champs, or went to Wales and 

shot at the World DTL Champs, or maybe travelled to the US and shot at the Iowa or Illinois 

State Champs (36 traps in a row operating at these venues)? Then you will have experi- 

enced this system for yourself. 

All very well for the big clubs - sure, but the advantages for small clubs are just as sign6 

cant! Your members will love shooting over the system, and it also means less labour, easier 

organisation of events, more ability for individual practice and you know that your shooting 

is under the same conditions you will experience at the big shoots. 

It has the same delay as a manual pull and fits to any trap machine on the market. Fully self- 

contained with it's own transformer, it runs off mains power (or a 12v option is available if 

required) and simply connects through the release socket on the trap machine. Easy to set 

up and operate and comes with a full 12 months warranty.

The Teams began to assemble on the 4th November with the A 

Team (ISSF) stopping at the Rydges Hotel and some of the B 

Team. Juniors (ISSF). and the Standard Tran and Skeet shooters 

stayed at Hunts ~ otel at Liverpool leaving 'the rest of the Team 

staying at the homes of friendslrelatives etc, around Sydney. 

The venue of the shooting was at the Cecil Park Clay Target Club 

Range, the home of the forthcoming Olympic Games. 

There has been a huge amount of money spent at Cecil Park an the 

main Pistol and Rifle ranges, but sadly not much has been spent 

in comparison on the Clay Target Range. What has been spent is 

just that necessary for running an Olympic Event only 3 superimnosed 

TraoISkeet layouts fitted with brand new Mattarelli 

eqiipment and it will have electronic score boards that hopefully 

will be left there after the Games are over. 

The grounds were not completely ready for the holding of such a 

major shoot as the Oceania Games as a lot of things that we have 

come to expect to be at shooting ranges from this caliber simply 

were not there. For example shelters from the sun and rain for 

shooters and Officials, tables and chairs for referees/scorers, gun 

racks, shaded seating areas for spectators and following squads of

shooters and numerous other things that go to make a successful 

shoot. 

The administration ofiice at the range was not nearly big enough 

to accommodate the necessary people to run such a shoot. The 

presentation facilities were inadequate with no PA system, a 

portable cassette player, no tables on which to place the trophies 

for presentation and inadequate flag poles to raise the winning

countries flags. This all came ahout hecause the area that had 

been designated for presentations was at the main building (some 

300 metre away) on the Pistol "Finals Range). Given the use of 

this range it was nigh on impossible ta arrange presentations for 

Clay Target in between there other events. It would mean our 

shooters would have to sit around far hours waiting for a time 

when this area would he free and ~ ~ lasine ~~ - the orestire that these 

awards should mean. The organisers d>d as well ss could be 

expected with rhc facilities that were orhcrwlsc available to them.

The catering service provided by the Oceania Committee was 

nothing more than what I would call 'Chuck Wagons' that would 

go around to factories delivering 'smokos and lunches'. The quality 

of the food left a lot to be desired and the prices were exorbitant. I 

believe the Local Board of Health closed them down not once, but 

twice, during the Oceania Games.

Luckily one of the Cecil Park Clay Target Members who is also a 

eare-taker, happens to work night shift at a local bakery and he 

ran the small canteen at the range supplying us with fresh pies, 

pastries, chips and hot dogs + coffee and drinks. What a savior and 

worker this man was -haking all night and working in the canteen 

for most of the day with very little sleep. The ofiicial caterers even 

had the eall to comulain that he was takine - their customers awav

had paid, I would have expected the facilities to have been much 

superior to those we were provided with. 

The atmosphere at this tournament was no where near that expe- 

rienced at our two prior Oceania Games, those held in New 

Zealand in 19995 and the 1997 Games held in Adelaide. This I 

believe was brought about by many factors, the main one by the 

splitting of the A Team (in the ISSF Events) from the B Team, the 

Juniors and the Standard Trap and Skeet Shooters and the poor 

representation on New Zealand's part. There were many competi- 

tions that New Zealand had no entries for, much to their shooters 

huge disappointment as apparently there were many willing to 

come and participate if only they had heen given the chance. For 

this very reason Australia was unable to have full Teams and 

iSSF skeet: Clive Barton, Craig Medleman and David Conningham. 

Individuals entered as well, for if you don't have more than 2 coun- 

tries entered in to a competition - there is no competition. This 

does not help for the future of shooting in the eyes of the ISSF - 

especially after the years and years of hard work at getting the 

standard Trap and Skeet to be allowed to he shot at these Games, 

where the smaller Oceania Countries can have a chance to 

compete. I helieve the ASA should be asking a lot of questions. 

The funding of the Games was virtually nan-existent from the 

Australian Government or the ASA except for the OAP funding

Clermont Clay Target Club held its Annual Two Day Shoot on the 

30131 October 1999. With the weather not looking too favorable 

things got under way with a night shoot on Friday to try out the 

new lights. Everybody appeared to be happy with the outcome. 84 

shooters nominated Saturday morning and the first event got 

underway 

Winner $1000 cash handicap: Alan Grimshaw (Gemfields). 

With 18 possibles shot in the first event the change to 

full fluro targets seemed to be the right move.

Saturday nights campoven tea was once again a big 

favourite with everyone, many thanks to David Hen- 

derson. Once tea and the Calcutta were over the local 

band The Two Hanres started and entertained the 

crowd to the wee hours of the morning. 

Everyone that stayed on really seemed to enjoy them- 

selves with auite a few of them UD and dancine and 

singing although somc of the voices were not in rune 

with the band they all had a grcor time.

I was sitting waiting for my wife shopping, when a young couple on 

the seat were all over each other and kissing and all that stuff, when 

it must have got to me, I said, "All you kids think of today is Sex, Sex, 

Sex, when I was your age I was home looking after my two children". 

Have you ever been tucked up warm in bed and laying there you can 

hear the cold wind blowing and rain on the rwf and you think how 

lucky you are to be dry and warm. Well we were staying at a motel 

when we were in these conditions, lovely and warm in bed and cold 

and wet outside. When we had a knock at the door, so out I go and 

open the door and there is this bloke all wet and cold and he said, 

"Could you give me a push mate". So I said "No I can%, and closed the 

door and went back to bed. The Wife said, "Who was that?", and I said 

"It was a bloke wanting a push". The wife said a"Ain2t you going to 

give him a push I remember we had to get a push a couple of times in 

our life when we were stuck in the wet". So after a while the wife got 

the best of me, so I put on my coat and went to the door, opened it and 

sang out "Do you still want a push?" and back came the answer, 'Yes". 

I said "Where are you?", and he said "Over here". With the rain 

pouring down you could hardly see, so off I go to the bloke singing out 

and when I reach him here he is in the kids play park sitting on a 

swing and he said "It is real good of you mate to come out in all this 

rain to give me a push on the swing, you're a real mate". 

Well, Monday 29th, day after our shoot the weather was very windy 

but no rain, I have just put my mate Harry on the plane to go and see 

his family in Geelong. Its a hit different to sit inside the plane as in 

the war years. Harry was under the middle of a liberator in the gun 

tarret with a couple of under and overs. Have a good trip Harry. 

MARYBOROUGH 28TH NOVEMBER 

A special thanks to our visitors as without them we wouldn't have 

much of a shoot. So thanks to Barry Power, Sunshine Coast, who took 

Champion of Champions at home and AA CONT at Gympie and Tania 

who has been only shooting for five months and is a B grade shooter. 

Tania is daughter to Pat Burke, who brought Tania from Caboolture

Ted also has applied to carry the 2000 touch as he carried it in 1956.

I don't think I have seen it before in the shoot off for single barrel 

CIShip, there was two A grade shooting for their grade, one B Grade 

and one AA grade shooting for Overall. They all shot the first round, 

then the whole four missed the second round. So every one has a 

chance if they would have hit, so then they all shot third round and in 

the forth one A grade shooter dropped one and the B grade and AA 

grade shooters continued onto a winner. So not very often you see a 

whole squad miss a target.

Firearms Safety Training 

- Release of consultation 

Draft Report 

The Minister for Justice and Customs, Senator the Hon 

Amanda Vanstone, has urged responsible and experienced 

shooters in all fields, as well as other members of the commu- 

nity, to consider the Consultation Draft Report on firearms 

safety training. Interested groups and individuals are encour- 

aged to put forward any view that might assist the develop- 

ment of a national firearm safety training framework. 

On 5 November 1999, Senator the Hon Amanda Vanstone, 

launched a Consultation Draft Report on firearms safety 

training after the recent Australasian Police Ministers 

Council (APMC) decision to release the document for commu- 

nity consultation. 

The report was developed following the agreement by all Aus- 

tralian Government for firearms controls after the Port 

Arthur tragedy. Part of the National Firearms Agreement 

reflects APMC's recognition that high levels of firearms safety 

training contribute significantly to minimising the risk of 

harm arising from the misuse of firearms. The Agreement 

requires States and Territories to ensure that all first time 

firearms licence applicants successfully compete an accredited 

course in safety training. 

The Consultation Draft Report provides standards for a train- 

ing framework that could be adopted by jurisdictions as a best 

practice model for safety training in Australia. 

To facilitate nationwide feedback the Consultation Draft 

Report is currently available on the Attorney-General's

Last Sunday, the 19th December, the Sunshine Coast Clay Target 

Club (SCCTC) held their Christmas Shoot. 45 keen shooters oarticipated 

on 3 sunl~r day p~lnctuared with occasional gusts. Shooters 

"lust be attracted to the Sunshine Coast at this time ofyear as 

we had shooters fmm as far away 3s Mt. Isa & Bundaberg. 

Considering the gusting breeze, a number of excellent scores were 

posted throughout the day. An example was in the first event 

where Wes Humphreys posted the only possible and Scott TraEord 

dro~ued onlv one. Paul Winzen. a veteran shooter from Bundabere. -. 

also put up; creditable 46/50 score. 

Event two, 25 targets crazy points, showed the true greed of the 

majority of shooters. Points are allocated 3 for first barrel, 2 for 

second barrel, 5 if you hit a chip, 0 if you miss the target or miss 

hitting the chip. Many greedy shooters recorded scores in the low 

thirties and forties chasing extra points but missing. Some only 

missed 1 whole tareet but could not hit a chin for love or monev.

to have a crack at thc chip, which he consequently hit. 

Before the third event began, some shooters believed they were 

ready for continental shooting, as this was all we had been shooting 

thus far. At the completion of the squad shooting, 3 possibles 

had been recorded. After a short shoot-off, Qninto Porfiri had disposed 

of Phil Grove to win the event. 

Keith McKee 24/25 in the veterans and Liam Murray 23/25 in the 

juniors posted other notable scores. 

During the presentations, the President Steve Davison again setup 

hard working committee member, Pygmy McAndrew. He was presented 

with a fresh pawpaw after winning the shoot off for third in 

the first event. Apparently he had missed winning the previous 15 

shoot offs. Steve then went onto wish all the best for a safe festive 

season and for safe return to participate in the January Super 

Shoot.

I am totally appalled at the presentation of the VIC Skeet 

Team at the photo session at the ACTA Skeet Nationals. 

After spending time and money making sure I was pre- 

sented correctly attired, I was not impressed. 

This was my first Nationals and has not left a nice taste in 

my mouth.

I am writing about the change that is about to take place 

with the Veterans age at Nationals. 

I think this is wrong to change from 65 back to 60, as you 

would lose a lot of the older shooters who just go for a shot. 

If picking teams for overseas shooting then it could he 

made 60. 

I think people taking teams out of this country should be 

stopped weaiingAustralian Jackets, unless they have won 

the right to wear them. Three times I see this has hap- 

pened, the last one a women to Japan.

Dear Editor, 

I read with interest Mr Adrian Cousens column in the 

December journal regarding the trap machines used at this 

years State Carnival at Wagga and his theory that the 

traps threw a lower percentage of straight away targets 

and higher percentage of dwingers. 

I agree with his theory as I have held a long term view of 

the unsuitability of imported and locally made traps that 

do not continually oscillate but fire a target from a fmed 

position and when a target is released it moves to another 

fixed position determined by electronic means. 

As I understand after 32 years involvement of the sport the 

simple principal of a continuing oscillating trap is that the 

direction of the target is determined by the call of the 

shooter. 

As to a tendered price for targets I believe that for a 

premier shoot like the Nationals and State Championships 

the tender process should be discontinued and the bottom 

line should be: 

1. The best available continually oscillating traps should 

he used

2. The best suirablc targcrs should be used irrespective of 

price. This would provide a level playing ficld for good and 

fair competitions.

Mauger. 

During his role as Senior President he was a loyal and dedi- 

cated Committeeman. He was a highly respected and liked 

Clubman who always made himself available to anyone that 

needed helo. 

Laulie enjoyed shooting, particularly Sporting Clays for the 

variety of targets, and also the 'socialising' side of the sporting dis- 

cipline. 

He will be sadly missed by the President, Committee and

Lily Mildred Godwin 

It is with regret that the Members of the GraRon Clay Target Club 

report the death of one of their Club stalwarts and fiiend Lily 

Mildred Godwin. 

Lily was born in Narranderra in 1924 and came to Grafton as a 

teenager. She met and later in 1942 married Stan Godwin. Stsn 

and Lily were both very involved with the Gr&n Clay Target 

Club, Stan as a eompetitar and Lily in the canteen. 

ARer losing Stan suddenly in 1995, Lily continued to be part ofthe 

Graiton Clay Target Club canteen group. She was happy lo shop, 

chase the weekly specials and go to the shoat every month. Lily 

would oRen help out in the canteen at the nearby Yamba Clay 

Target Club also. 

Lily was invariably one of the firat to amve an a shoot day to 

prepare and have e 'cuppa' ready for the travelling shooters. 

She was also an eager rafile seller for the Club and patrons would 

well remember regularly being stung for tickets by this brave and 

very strong person who was only four feet eleven inches tall.

port, not only for our Anniversary shoot but always first to the club 

on a Sunday and last to leave, it's a pity some younger club 

members don't follow his example. 

Our Junior Vice President Mr. Chett Auditore and his brother 

Peter always ready to lend a hand and also Chett donated $100 

sponsorship towards our shoot, two fine young men (thanks 

fellas). 

Pam Trew and Carol Tilley in the office, a tireless pair of workers, 

and to our sorrow we missed our great mate Les Trew who unfor- 

tunately was injured in a work related accident 2 days before the 

shoot, I believe all Les could say while waiting in casualty for his 

operation was "I'm going to miss the BLOODY shoot". 

And last but not least my wife Karen, my best mate (that's when 

she's not flogging me when we shoot together) hard worker and 

great asset to the club and especially to me. I know I could not do 

this job without her support and help (thanks Suzy). 

Another Anniversary shoot over, thanks to all the shooters who 

attended and hope next year we can do it bigger and better.

The Wilkawatt Gun Club held its Anniversary Shoot on the 

weekend of the 13th & 14th November 1999. 

Saturday was n windy day, but 34 shuuters braved the conditions.

Newell. Unfortunately it was only a g~aded event, but was good 

shooting under trying conditions. Jim Cornwell won AA Grade 

with 25/26, Lynton Schubert won A Grade with 24425 and Simon 

Vogel won C Grade with 23127. 

Jim Cornwell won the Day 1 High Gun with 76181 and L Sharam 

won the Veterans High Gun with 60175.

The days shooting ended off with a delicious Webber tea and catching 

up with 'old' friends who turned up for the weekend. 

Sunday proved robe a lot better day wcathcr gnsr and rhc rcsults 

of the shooting proved this. 34 shootcrs competed this day. 13 

shooters all shot 10110 in the lOrm * EIO. 

The 50th ~nni"ersary CIShip ended in one of the clubs biggest 

shoot offs between Tony Rohrlach and Don Beelitz. Atter shooting 

125tgts in the shoot off, pointscore determined the winner in Tony 

who shot 1781178.

95/97. Cliff Mayberry won B Grade with 49/50 with D Harris 2nd 

with 48/50. C Grade was won by S Pocock with 46/50 and I

AA Grade High Gun winner over the 21 days was R Andrews 

1721175. D Hayward won AGrade with 1651175, B Schillabeer won 

B Grade with 1651175. I Maynard won C Grade with 1551175. 

Veteran High Gun was won by L Sharam with 1581175. 

Each Grade Winner won 112 case of shells whilst Bob won a Case.

The year 2000 marks the 100th anniversary of the death of The Marquess 

of Queensberry. But the boxing rules, which were drawn up 

under his supervision in 1867, are still observed to this day However 

I doubt if even the Marquess himself fully appreciated the effect that 

the "intent" of those rules ~vould have on most other sports, as well as 

many other areas of human behaviour, some far removed from sport. 

Even warfare eventually came under their far-ranging influence, particularly 

in the field of aviation. 

During the Firsc World War it was not uncommon for pilots on both 

sides to cease firing at their opponent once his machine became dis- 

abled, or even sometimes if he simply ran out of ammunition or his 

guns jammed. Many notable examples also occurred during the 

Second World War. Such as when Sir Douglass Bader, the famous 

legless "ace" was shot down over Germany, and the LuRwaffe granted 

an amnesty for a British plane to fly him over a new pair of legs. And 

later in the war, when American pilots were ordered to machine-gun 

any German jet pilots that haled out, most simply refused to do so. 

The Marquess's famons rules simply dictated that when opponents 

are pitted against one another, the match should not only be con- 

ducted in such a way as to reflect fair play and chivalry, but also for 

mercy and compassion to be exercised by the one who gained the 

upper hand. This whole scenario is especially intended to be observed 

when the losing protagonist has gotten "behind the eight-ball" 

through no fault of his own or due to the influence of some abstract or 

irrelevant technicality. The reason I have raised this matter is to 

examine and hopefully moderate the way in which we interpret and 

administer our rulebook in Trap and Skeet shooting in this country. 

This is not meant to apply in any way shape or form to any ofthe ISSF 

disciplincu. ISSF shwting is not, and never was, meant to conform to 

the Marquess's principles. The ISSF rulebook is very technical and 

precise in every detail and was always intended and designed to be 

applied at all times to the very letter of the law. ISSF shooting was 

never designed to be a casual Saturday afternoon game. It was never 

designed to be a socially oriented recreational activity It was designed 

to be an ultra competitive sport, which is conducted at the very 

highest levels and for the gravest of stakes, such as Olympic gold 

medals. 

W~th such serious intcrnatiunal and political ramifications hinging 

upon the outcome, there can be no room in such sports for any flcnbility 

whatsoever with the interpretation of the rulcd. Any tlme that 

your opponent has broken one more target than you, hut is unintentionally 

in breach of some minor helevant technicality, you would be 

well advised to win by protesting against him and having him disqualified, 

because in a reverse situation he would certainly do the 

same to you. 

Due to the small population ofi\ustralia, it is not economically viable 

to have separate organisations controlling Tr3p. Skeet and ISSF 

shooting,as they do in the Unitcd States Thus theAC1'Ais faced with 

the daunting task of trying to adequately administer and oversee all 

three. One of the unfortunate but unavoidable side effects of this is a 

certain amount of cross-pollination within the disciplines, particn- 

larly in the area of rules and their interpretation. As a result, a 

marked degree of technical inflexibility has crept into our application 

of Trap and Skeet rules and this is a great pity, because neither of 

those games were ever intended to be played that way. 

When the American Trap and Skeet rules were originally laid down by 

the ATA and the NSSA, they both assumed that common sense and 

perceived equity would always prevail when those rules were being 

applied or interpreted. That principle remains to this day in both of 

those sports in the United States, and works extremely well due to a 

"flow-on" effect derived fmm the Mquess's original intention. If you 

write a rulebook that allows a degree of flexibility and then educate 

the participants in the Queensberry principles, it is amazing how far 

most Ceonle will eo in an attemDt to uohold those Drincioles. And how 

quickiy

to indicate that he understood what he was to adjudicate upon. After 

we broke eight targets. Wayne turned to the puller and said -Same 

again but this time well shoot from the hip." I think we both broke 

three out of four that time and the trick shooting continued for almost 

a full round before we finally got a result 

Why do I remember that evening so elearly? Maybe it's because 

although there were almost 300 people watching that shoot-off, 

durine the last two rounds vou could have heard a nin drou. Perhaus 

it's because, at the end, thecheering and clapping bent on' for ove; a 

minute before it finally abated. It could be because that shooc-OK is 

still talked about to this day. But I think it's mainly because although 

most of the "who's who" in skeet were there, including pmbably half 

of the National Directors, there was never any chance that some misguided 

"do-gooder" would run out onto the field waving a rulebwk and 

shouting "you can't do this or you can't do that." 

Why? Because equity was never compromised. Because Queensberry 

rules were strictlv observed at all times. Because when it's all said 

and done it was reallv between Wme and ~ I ~~ . anvwav. , ~, And ~ ~ because ~~~~~~~~~~ in

in a shoot-off offer management a mutually agreed upon method of

On another occasion I saw Wayne Mayes and George Desatoff shoot- 

ing off for the World 12 Gauge Championship. Both were shooting 

autos. After a while George's gun started jamming occasionally. Mer 

three of these, the referee politely reminded George that the next one 

would be lost if he did not change guns. Wayne then said "It's not 

annoying me if it's not annoying you, partner." George nodded and 

simply said Thanks Wayno" Wayne lwked over at the referee and 

said "Stop countin em." The referee replied "Yes sir." A buzz went 

through the crowd followed by a mund of applause and the shoot-off 

continued. That's the stuff that legends are made of and the Rules 

Committee joined in the applause.

shut in a collar and t~c, I'm sure that chivalry prevailcd. Then I think 

we drilled aimlesslv down the ISSF oath for many vears. But over the 

last counle of vears I have sensed a'eradual so&kne in our draconian 

attiiudes. i believe it's time now ';o consider whe;her we continue 

chasing t~~hnlral loopholes and requiring juries to sort our problems 

out, or whether wc fullow rhc Amcnran example and only bring the 

rulebook out when conlmon sense and fair-play fail. The Marquess 

may have been dead for a hundred years, but it's up to us to deeide 

whether he grows cold or whether his legacy is allowed to live on.

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY - NATIONAL TRAP CHAMPIONSHIPS 

1. In the event of any shooter not being able to produce hislher Handicap Card, a duplicate shall be issued for the duration of 

t he National Championships. This card will then be forwarded to the Club Secretary to enable scores shot to be recorded. 

Note: A $20 fee will be charged for the issue of any duplicate Handicap Card. 

2. Squads of 6 to shoot 50 targets05 targets in brackets of 25, one visit only to the traps. 

3. Shooters will be squadded as per ACTA rules and regulations and any interpretation of this will be the responsibility of the 

Tournament Director. 

4. Each shooter is to take enough cartridges to shoot at 50 targets05 targets. A time limit of two minutes will be imposed for 

the changeover for each 25 targets. Should the two-minute time limit be exceeded then a penalty of the LOSS OF ONE 

TARGET may be incurred. 

5. Shooters who fail to appear in time for their squad may forfeit their nomination and will be re-squadded towards the end of 

the event. 

6. Should a shooter being late for his squad then elect to withdraw from the event he may not be eligible for any refund of 

nominations paid. 

7. All shooters must sign the score sheet after each 25 targets. Once a shooter has signed his score sheet he has accepted 

his score and grade. Any score sheet not carrying the shooters signature will be credited with the lowest score recorded. 

8. Any competitor may be called upon to referee andlor score throughout the period of competition. The persons' designated 

to referee and score must fulfill their obligation to do so. Failure to either referee or score may incur a penalty of the LOSS 

OF ONE TARGET in the next event. Should a following event not be programmed then the penalty of the LOSS OF ONE 

TARGET may be incurred in the event concerned. 

9. Shooters will be drawn from each day's last round squads to referee and score the first round of the following day, being 

ready to officiate at the advertised starting time. Shooters who fail to fulfil their responsibility may be penalised one target. 

While replacement referee and scorers are permissible, the penalty of a loss of one target for they're failing to officiate shall 

be made against the officially designated person. 

10. Any unauthorised shooter interfering with or attempting to interfere with the trap will be penalised FIVE (5) TARGETS. 

11. All disputes must be in writing togetiner with $20 deposit, which is refundable subject to the appeal being upheld. 

12. All disputes and deposits must be lodged with the Tournament Director, who shall arrange a hearing with the appointed jury. 

13. Optional sweeplpurse nominations shall be noted on a separate form from shooting nominations. Entries for sweeplpurse 

will only be accepted at the designated area, which shall be a different location of the area accepting shooting event 

nominations. 

14. Optional sweeplpurse prizes will be available for collection on the following day of each event with the exception of the final 

day. All payments must be signed for and proof of identification given if requested. 

15. When team selection is involved, shooters who are eligible for the open team selection as well as section teams shall chose 

in which team they may be selected. They cannot compete in both Open and Section teams. To be eligible for selection in 

any team, competitors must have competed in a clear majority of programmed events. 

16. Any eligible competitor paying nominations is entitled to receive awards in the Open sectlon, Womens, Juniors or Veterans 

section, however the overall winner cannot take any section prize. 

Note: A junior female must decide which section she is to enter (junior or womens), she is not eligible for both. 

17. A minimum of three persons must compete in any Grade or Section, including High Gun before sashes, medals trophies 

andlor cash are awarded, irrespective of nomination paid. 

18. Nominations will close daily at 11.00am or at the discretion of the Tournament Director. 

19. Anyone participating in the practice of card playing at the National Championships is expected to be considerate of the 

requirements of others, and the presence and behavior of the card players must not cause inconvenience or disturbance. T

20. Any interpretation of the program and conditions of entry will be the responsibility of attending members of the Executive 

Committee, whose decision shall be final. 

21. An acceptable standard of dress is required for all competitors, Tournament Director to adjudicate.

Shooters paying reduced noms are eligible for Open as well as section prizes. 

23. All Competitors must comply with Firearms Licensing Laws in their State of residence and in the State hosting the National

Gun Club 

On Saturday the 20th and Sunday 21st the club held its 27th 

Birthday shoot, with competitors coming from as far away as 

Broken Hill, Tumby Bay (Ungarra Gun Club) and Adelaide. 

Club members had spent a lot of time working around the club 

and had it in great shape for the shoot. 

Unfortunately the weather was a bit on the damp side on Sat- 

urday which made the targets hard to see, but some good 

scores were still shot. 

Sunday saw a slight improvement in the weather. 

The meals for the weekend were up to their usual excellent 

standard thanks to the kitchen staff. 

Trapper persons done a great job, with out them it would he 

very hard to operate. 

The people doing the office work and anyone that helped in any 

way to run the shoot all did a great job, which helps any event 

run smoothly.

The Women's Individual Double Trap saw our 3 competitors in the Final as 

well and after the last shot was fired Suzie Balogh waa the outright winner.

This completed what I believe is one ofthe mast successful trips far an Australian 

Team and all of the Team members were a pleasure to be with and I 

hope that they all had as memorable and satisfying trip as I had and bearing 

in mind that all of these competitors had paid their own way to shoot far 

Australia except for their nominations, doping control and ground transport, 

. which again was thankfully paid by theA.C.T.A. 

There is one other small excursion that I wauld like to tell you about. I have 

never aeen anyone is enthusiastic about fishing as Paul Rahman. Paul tmk 

his own fly fishing md with him and he was so disappointed at not catching 

a fish at the dairy (the day we went to Rotorua) that I promised him that if 

we finished early one day we would hire a professional fisheman and go out 

one evening. After a few phone call this was organizes but we needed 3 

people to make it worth while, as the boatwould take up to 4. 

The day in question came up rather 'dirtfin the afternoon but the weather 

forecast was not looking . god for the days ahead so it was 'now or never'. 

By the time we left the shwtingpund at around 3pm, the number ofwould 

be 'fisher-people' had grom from 3 to 9, so after another few frantic phone 

calls (Iwking for a larger boat) we eventually got onto one that could take 10 

people but it was at Lake Taupo - one and a half hours drive from Hamilton! 

We gut u, Lake Tuupo around Zpm and found the lake very calm and the 

weather beautiful but overcast, thll auppo,edly the best weather for tmut 

fish~ng The bunt war a 7 and n half metre cabm erurscr. aukre modern and 

powen?d by a large outbclurd motor and could cruise at b;ound 50 kph. NI 

the fiahing gear was supplied, as was tescollee, thc cnly problem being that 

only 2 wople could fish at any one tlmc. 

After seeing some famous sights amund the lake we settled down to our firat 

experience of 'tmlling' for trout. We gave Paul the go at fishing and yes, 

within 5 minutes he hooked one and the excitement on the boat was almost 

electrifying with Vince Molliea just about falling aver everyone to get to Paul 

with the landing net. Paul's fish weighed about 6 and a half pounds, a huge 

tmut compared to those we might catch in Australia and the iwk on Paul's 

face made those andous moments experienced whilst trying to organize this 

expedition made it all worthwhile. Paul then sat back and let the other take 

their turns at fiahing and it was another hour before Nathan Cassells tw 

landed a trout, a little smaller than Paul's but he was iust as omud of his 

catch as was Paul. 

I left evervone to it - fishine that was. and I found a bed in the cabin and I 

kicked ofmy bwts and lay Acre lirten'ing to everyone, talhng and laughing.

cut'but I tw was glad to eventually see the lights of Hamilton.

CHRISTIMAS SHOOT 

One of the best organiscd shoots of 1999 was held at Wm-wirk. 

With 96 shooters, a 9.30am stan and 430pm finish. Followed by a 

tiee B-B-Q, drinks and a magnificent fireworks display. 

A record number of competitors for a Christmas shoot and a 

massive fireworks display ended a successful year of activities for 

the Wanvick Clay Target Club. 

Almost 100 shooters took Dart in the comnetition. a new record for 

the end of year event. ~ h&e was strong rkpresentation from clubs 

ar Goondiwindi, Ballandcan, Gold Coast, Toowoombn and 

Lismore, with one shooter From the Glen lnncs.

The events for the Christmas shoot were all standard rather than 

noveltv events. this nroved to be wnular with shooters. Tronhies 

preseited werk 40 iocally cured hams presented to winners of 

events on the day. 

--The after dark $2000 fireworks display by Merrylands Fireworks, 

Gatton was sponsored by club members Keith Rowling and Robin 

b y and drew a crowd of several hundred people who sat out on 

the range in front of the clubhouse to watch.
