PRESIDENT'S COLUMN 

AS you may be aware, over the past months there has been a 

degree of unrest between some of our shooters and the Association 

as a whole. If you read my column in the April CTSN you will 

have read comments that I made m this regard. 

I also Invited comments from those concerned to write to the 

CTSN and explain their actions. This has taken place and it was the 

intention to publish these letters plus others in this issue of the 

CTSN. 

Fortunately for Clay Target Shooting, commonsense has prevailed 

on both sides and agreement reached that no purpose 

would be served m pursuing thls line of thinking. We thank those 

who took the time to write to the CTSN and their decision along 

with the Association to put the best mterests of the sport before all 

else.

ENCOURAGEMENT PLAN 

Correspondence from the Australian Inshtute of Sport contains 

the advice that an amount in excess of $1 6m has been approved 

under the 1990 Step Program wlth athletes receiving grants from 

$2000 to $100.000 to offset costs of training and overseas competition 

Two of our members have been favourably cons~dered by the 

Institute wlth grants of $4000 being approved for Ian Hale and 

$2000 for John Maxwell 

We take this opportunity to express the appreciation of the sport 

as a whole for support given to both Ian Hale and John Maxwell as

QUESTIONNAIRE 

Competitors in the Double Barrel Championship at the 1990Trap 

Nationals were provided with a questionnaire m an attempt to 

obtain their opinion on various items concerning the National 

Championships. The results of the survey are published below to 

inform those who assisted in the gathering of the information of the 

survey and to inform others not m Tasmania as to how competitors 

responded to the various questions contained in the survey. 

The information gathered from the Tasmanian Nationals will 

have been discussed by the National Executive Committee during 

May and a report on their findings will be printed at an early date.

BREAK RECORD 

Wagga Gun Club member Maree Rooke shot what is believed 

to be an Australian Ladles record at the recent Victorian Clay 

Target Association State Championships 

Shooting at the Melbourne Gun Club, Maree recorded a 

20-target break on Saturday plus an additional 12 targets m the 

shoot-off On Sunday 15th April Maree broke 100 targets in the 

State Skeet Championship plus an additional 8 targets m the shoot- 

otl for the State tltle to f~nish with a skeet break totallmq 140 Con- 

qratulat~ons Maree on an outslanding effort.

Natlonal Champtonshlps conducted at the Belfast Gun Club In 

Chrlstchurch from the 10th to 16th March The smaller than 

average number was perhaps because our own Nationals were

TERRITORY SHOOTING 

Thls month I cannot do anything else but to indulge in some real 

beaut skitlng on behalf oi our magnificent representatives at the 

recent National Trap Championships in Tasmania and I am going 

to enjoy every syllable of it all! 

Although the Terrrtory team did not do so well in the team event 

(poss~bly a case of ' early nattonal nerves' ) Terrttory shooters 

came home showered in glory. In fact it was the best combined 

result Territory shooters have had in the decade or so of our 

iieldinu a ~err~tory team 

Greg Chan vron the Nattonal Points Score Chdmpionshlp being 

the only shocter In the ileld of 360 that day lo shoot a perfect score 

Greq shot ear!v end rust sat back and watched the rest of Australla 

try to catch up. ice going Greg. 

Yulara C grader (surely not any more?), Paul Warren, shooting 

oif 16m. won the National Handicap Championship in a shoot-off 

from Tony Bradshaw with a score oi 82/82. That score would be 

one to be proud oi in any handicap event Paul, let alone a national 

championship. Well done mate! 

The Darwin Gun Club team of Greg Chan. Phil Grove. Ken 

Selwood. Victor Fertiklis and Doug Chan then went on to win the 

Australian Club Champlonship after a shoot-off from the defending 

champions Echuca Gun Club. They competed against 60 other 

clubs. The championship 1s decided over 250 targets after which it 

was found that they had tied on points with the Echuca team. An 

extra 25 targets had to be shot and Darwin took the title by one 

point. This effort has placed the club on the map as a shooting 

centre and should raise interest in the annual shoot already well- 

known around the country. What more can I say? 

Further congratulations are in order for Greg Chan and Ken 

Selwood who have been selected for the Australian McIntosh 

team. For those of you who may not be aware, the Mclntosh trophy 

1s . hot hetween ..~ all -~~ Commonwealth countries and is one of the 

~ ~~~ 

prestlglous events on our national calendar. It would be a cause 

for celebrat~ons to get one Terrttortan Into the team let alone two. 

Fantastic, fellows! 

Ken Selwood came third in A Grade with 52/54 in the Single 

Barrel and Greg Chan was unlucky when he dropped his 70th 

target in the shoot-off of the Double Barrel Champlonship. 

The performance of our shooters was slmply magniftcent, really 

placing theTerrltory on the natlonal shootlng map. Take a bow you 

blokes!

CONGRATULATIONS 

The wins by Kevin Perkins (Perk) of the Overall Trap High Gun 

and the Single Barrel Championship at the National Ghampionships 

in Tasmania were a great thrill for many and may I say very 

popular wins also. 

Over the years I have seen many great shooters and sportsmen 

win the overall high gun but for me this was a win truly deserved 

by a person who just loves shooting at all levels, whether il be trap. 

skeet or ISU trench. 

Kevin has run second on three occasions at National Championships 

over the years in the Double Barrel, Single Barrel and 

Double Rise, he has al:o been a member of the skeet team that 

toured USA and the trap team that toured Britain. 

I have known Kevln far some 20 years. He helped me, as he has 

helped many others, when I first started shooting at the lllawarra 

Gun Club on their old grounds. He has been a hard working 

committeeman at lllawarra for many years at both the old club and 

the present club. 

TO Kevn and h~s greatest supporter Juay may I congratulate 

you both on behelf of all the shooters for your efforts and your conlr~bution

esting. I 

DO YOU VALUE YOUR HEARING? 

The ear 1s made up of three sections: The outer, the middle and 

thelnner. 

The outer ear is the part that 1s seen, and it opens into the ear 

canal. The eardrum separates the ear canal from the middle ear.. 

There are three small bones - the hammer, anvil and stirrup 

located in the m~ddle ear. These bones transfer sound. The inner 

ear conlatns [he bdia?ce nerve end.ngs in the seml.c~rcular canals 

and [he heartng nerve enolnqs in !he cochlea which lead to the 

bra!r! 

Sound vibrations or waves enter the outer ear and strike the eardrum, 

causing it to vibrate. The vibrations are then transferred 

from the eardrum along the hearing bones to the cochlea, which is 

filled wlth fluid. The vibrations cause the liquid to move and stimulate 

the tiny nerve endings. The endlngs are attached to make up 

the hearlng nerve. The vibrations then become nerve impulses 

and go dtrectly to the bratn, where the impulses are interpreted as 

sound. The brain can then distinguish the kind of sound - a phone 

ringing, machinery in a factory, a gunshot. 

If a nolse is too loud. it will begin to kill the nerve endings in the 

inner ear. If a person experiences prolonged exposure to loud 

noise without hearing protection more nerve endings will be 

destroyed, resulttng in hearing loss and ringing. 

Sound 1s measured in two ways: 

1. dec~beis (dB) and 

2. pitch - frequency of sound vibrations per second. 

The decibel scale runs from 0 dB, the falntest sound a human ear 

can detect, to over 180 dB, which 1s the intensity of sound of a 

rocket launch. Most heartng experts agree that continual 

exposure to notses of 85 dB or more, wtthout the use ofhearing pro- 

tection can be damagtng.

With shooters, because of a head shadow effect, one receives 

more noise exposure than the other. Ttierefore the left ear 1s 

usually worse for right handed shooters and vice versa for a left 

handed shooter.

For personal safety and health, protect your ears from repeated 

or continuous exposure to any sound above 80 decibels. 

There are only two baslc Types of hearln~ protection ear muffs 

and ear plugs Both have advanrages and d.sadvantages Muffs 

lend toget In the way of head gear and sometlmescause ~roblems 

when mounting the~gun as they contact the comb of the stock. 

Plugs are more compact, more comfortable and do not interfere 

with head gear or gun stocks. 

Hearing loss is insidious, and begins at the higher frequencies 

where it may not be noticed at first. But as years go on, it shows up 

more and more. This means that a shooter, who has the ability to 

hear someone loud and clear talking one to one at age thirty may 

well be'into the progressive deterioration which means that at age 

forty he may have trouble sorting out what's bemg said in a 

crowded room, and at age fifty will need a hearlng aid. 

We have all seen older members of gun clubs who are plalnly 

suffertng from hearrng loss

Welcome home to our State Trap team representatives, from all 

reports a very enjoyable Nationals. Congratulations to Tim Catling 

on maklng the Australian team. 

Closer to home things have been on the move. At the AGM in 

Bunbury. State Coaching Director Murray Alexander and State 

Secretary/Treasurer Ross Arlow, announced their retirement. 

Flve years of dedicated service from Ross and Murray have been

MALLALA GUN CLUB 

Mallala Gun Club's team once again have done their club proud 

by winning the E. Demichene & P. D'Allessandro team shield. The 

event was conducted in conjunction with the 25T Autumn DB 

Championship hosted by International Gun Club. Mallala's team 

members - B. Greenshields, K. Polst, B. Johnson. R. Smith and T. 

O'Connor scored 121/125. Mallala's reserve team member J. Ellis 

shot a 25/25 in this event as well - Mallala members took out the 

event inever/ grade -0A & A: Ron Smith, AA: B. Johnson, B: John 

Ellis and C: Helen Johnson. Not a bad effort for a country gun club 

visiting their city cousins. 

We dl1 thought that 11 doesn't happen that onen for a visiting club 

to take out the overall and every grade trophy in a double barrel 

champ~onsh.p event - a good effort. 

Mallala club members also braved the cold and windy condi- 

tions at Monarto's Anniversaq shoot over the weekend of April 

21/22. All members shot well and had a great time. especially the 

moup that walked to dinner at a Chinese restaurant on the Satur- 

day night and staggered back to the motel much later. How could 

they have gotten that happy on coke? It is a question only Bernie 

Greenshields can answer. One of Mallala's lady shooters was 

fa~rly sheepish on Sunday morning - it was noticed that she was 

wearing her roll-neck skivvy as high as possible, can the coke 

attacker ~ -~ -~ answer -- for ~~- that. The team a little under the weather came 

third in each of ~onarto's ~Geld shoo~. Just watch out next year - 

we will return for the fun of it.

FAR WEST GUN CLUB 

The annual two-dav shoot of the Far West Gun Club was conducted 

on Aortl14 a& 15 last. The attendance was the ooorest that

However, what was lacking in number was made up for in 

quality and with climate conditions betng as near perfect for 

shoot~ng as one could desire and wtth the flies givlng everyone 

their continual anention a very real carnival ahnosphere prevailed 

with lots of friendly waving being a feature. Boy, those flies were 

persistent. They were sprayed, swatted, shooed, cursed. 

munched, crunched and swallowed but nobody and nothing 

depleted their enthusiasm nor their numbers. Of couise nobody 

really believed Paul Beale when he complained they were using 

his sighting rib for a slippery dip - our flies are all business and 

no funny business. 

All oroblems aside. evervone breasted the taw to contest ~~ the ~ 

SOT lilial Trap wlth some &cellent scores recorded, generally 

speaking. I am sure Jess Averis wolld do better at baUtrap if he 

didn t keep repeating his trench lessons during !he shoot. 

When the last ball had been trapred an up and coming Local 

shwter in Steve Chapman led the way vrith a 48/50 lor B grade & 

OA followed by Trevor Heard scoring 46/50. C grade honours 

went to Paul Beale with 47/50, 

Aner an excellent lunch served by the ladies tn the kttchen the 

SOT Handlcap was contested. 

When the bulldust had settled another'local shooter Alan Suter 

had out his name on Iirst with a nice 53/55 after a short shoot-off

with Paul Beale and Kim (Tiger RU$ ~11th. ~aul weighing in with 

52/55 and Kym with 51/53. F~rst prize vias a large camp oven and 

as Alan is a chef there will no doubt be many new gastronomical

near future - advance bookings will be accepted.

most convivial gathering took place at the Ceduna Hotel that

the honours in A grade, Alan showing 49/53. Trevor 48/53. B 

made went to Kym Firth 47/50 and C grade honours to Ken (Rem- 

brandt) Butson with 43/50. 

After putting the feet under the table once again it was back to 

the tracks for the final leg. When the 50T plus the shoot-offs were 

conductedjohn Holder showed the way in~grade with a score of 

49/55. Steve Chapman was m the money again for first in B grade 

52/55. C grade shooter George Burnett on 41/50 twk his grade 

honours. 

The Kym Parker Memorial High Gun Cup went to the man with 

Monein oiled barrels in Paul Beale with a score for the weekend of 

198/205, a top effort Paul. 

Local High Gun was taken out by Alan Suter who had to shoot-off 

with Trevor Heard for the honour as both were one target behind 

Paul on 191/205. Alan recorded 209/227 and Trevor 208/227. 

So there you have it folks. If you were there you enjoyed it and

Our next major shoot is our Crayfish Carnival on July 28th-29th 

featuring 25Pr Commonwealth Double Rise Championship and 40 

State Mixed Target Championship and Crayfish 

The City of Geraldton hosted the 1990 Mid-West Games. with 

approximately 3000 competitors from 18 shires in 41 nominated 

sports taking part. Competitors came from all parts of the Mid- 

West Region, ranging from the Wiiuna Shire in the north to the

Coorow Shire in the south. 

The Games are run along similar lines to the Olympic and 

Commonwealth Games with the shnes, in effect representing the 

various countries. Competitors then compete for gold, silver and 

bronze medals m !nd!vidual and team events depending upon the 

sport involved. 

The Geraldton Gun Club hosted a six-event Clay Target programme 

over two days with shooters coming from the Northampton, 

Muliewa. Greenough and Geraldton Shires. 

Saturday April 21.51 saw 18 shooters competing in the two events 

scheduled 

The first event was SO Target Skeet with B. Chandler shooting 

SO/SO which gave him the gold medal m A Grade, D. Hilsz won 

gold in B Grade with 48 and G. Cammock winning gold in C Grade 

with 45/50. 

The second event was a 50 Target Skeet Teams event, with competitors 

nominating their &man team. This was won by B. Chandler 

47/50, D. Hilsz 47/50 and S. Horo 44/50 with a combined score of 

138/150 which gave them all a gold medal. The silver was won by 

the team consisting of D. Wellington, R. Burton and G. Cammock 

with a combined score of 126/150 and the bronze went to G. Kelly, 

E. Daw and P. Stuart with 120/150 after a shoot-oif with L. Watson, 

G. Wulff and F. Bombara. 

Sunday April 22nd saw 27 shooters competing in the four events 

scheduled

of a case of ammo went to ticket No. 66 owned by Mrs Thelma 

Meadows of Brisbane and another good worker for her club. Congratulations

The Brisbane/Gymp~e Australia Day Police Charity Shoot 

resulted in $400 going to Leukaemia Foundation and $400 to Brain 

Damage Foundation. Thanks once again to the police who 

travelled and gave their time to work for charity. 

Our Timber City One-Day Shoot had an attendance of 42 

shooters from all over the State with Victorian Bill Bright of 

Numurkah competing also. High Guns on the day went to R. 

Rehbem (A Grade). B. Stoilberg (B Grade) and B. Bnght (C Grade). 

The third event was 25 Target Single Barrel with gold in A Grade 

going to B. Boschetti with 20/25. gold in B Grade to G. Kelly with 

21/25 and gold in C Grade to G. Cammock 23/25.

featuring in every event took the B Grade and J. Wilson C Grade 

honours. 

The Skeet Hiah Gun sash was won bv B. Chandler with 97/100

The Trap High Gun sash was won by G. Kelly 125/145 after a 

shoot-off with T. Harris, both from B Grade.

shot 75/76 to take AA Grade and push Ken Stevens to 76/76 

to win the Overall in the "Cooloola Classic" DB event, the malor on 

the day.

Passed away February 1990. Mick was a highly regarded 

member of the Geelong Club for 27 years. He was a tireless 

worker m the development of the Clubrooms and trap machinery, 

Past Treasurer. President and Committee member. Mick 

achieved State Team selection at Skeet and was always in the forefront 

in Skeet and Tower at Club and District level. 

Vince Oliveri improved all day - gaining a bronze in the fourth, 

a silver in the fifth, a gold in the last event after a shoot-off with G. 

Cammock

1990 NATIONAL TRAP CHAMPIONSHIPS 

After an absence of some IS years the Trap Nationals returned 

to the Tasmanian Gun Club at Evandale and wh~le not as well 

anended so far as mainland shooters were concerned they 

certainly gained support irom the reg~slered shooters in Tas 

mania. Commencing under difficulties with the absence of State 

Secretary. Kaye Woods due to illness, the Nat~onals were very 

well conducted by TCTA offic~als. W~th a hard working and 

efficient Office Manager in Molly Bryan, their fears of maybe not 

having the experience to conduct a Nat~onal Champ~onships were 

quickly dispelled and to their credit the happenings that take 

place beh~nd the scenes were attended to with the utmost 

efi~ciency. One oithe more pleas~ng aspects whsh highlighted the 

Tasmanian commitment was the appearance of Kaye durmg the 

Nationals "lust alter some time in hospital, just to make sure that 

everything was going okay" - 11 was. 

The opening ceremony which involved all State Shoulder to 

Shoulder teams was most impressive with all teams marching to 

take uo their oosition under their resoective State flaos to the 

acccmpanimei~of a Scotttsh picer 'opening the ~ismanlan 

Nat~onals !he State Premier. The Hon M~chael F~eld commented 

on the pr~de lhat Tasmanla does lake in hosttng maloc s~or11r.g 

events, none more than our own clay target championships. Under 

the guidance of National Executive member and State Coaching 

Director Stuart Browning, the Prem~er fired the openlng shot of the 

championships and while not successiul in breaking the target the 

Premier was obv~ously enloytng the break from the rigours of 

parliamentary duties.

Having drawn for positions the first competlt~on event the State 

Teams match was underway. With the strong teams from Victoria 

and South Australia the most fancied. It was, however the host 

State Tasmania who took the honours and what better way for the 

championships to commence than a win for the home State who as 

well as winning, won well wlth only the one target dropped for the 

event. Cameras came from everywhere to record the winning 

team whose members included the well known and very experienced 

Sperry Marshall to the junior member of the team Royden

41st GRAND AUSTRALIA HANDICAP 

The flrst national t~tle of the championships is the handicap which 

traditionally produces some surprise results. With a field of 313 

including shooters from New Zealand, Singapore and America the 

title event was full of interest right through to the last shot fired 

which produced a new national champion, this time from the 

Northern Territory club at Ayers Rock with John Warren a very 

proud and excited winner with his score of 86/86 from the 16m 

mark. To win John had to outstay some good shots and finally did 

this when well known Victorian Tony Bradshaw missed his 86th 

target from 20 metres. Another very pleased winner was Wonthaggi's 

Lyn Gray whose score of 55/56 from the 14-metre mark 

won the ladies section. NSW junlor Jason Gilkes also showed his 

liklng for hand~cap shooting, taking out the junior section irom 16 

metres with a very well shot 55/56, A popular win in the veterans to 

19-metre shooter Kevin Aylett from Devonport, Tasmania who is a 

strong supporter of the nationals wherever they are held.

38th DOUBLE BARREL CHAMPIONSHIP 

Sponsored in its entirety by Winchester a total of 326 took the 

field to shoot for the double barrel title. The traditional blue ribbon 

event for clay target shooters was shot in conjunction with the 

ladies and junior double barrel championships and like the 

handicap was well contested. 

Some very good performances were recorded in the open 

double barrel with the shooters contmuing into the two hundreds 

before a winner was able to be declared. Noorat junior Glen 

Hayden pushed the beld all the way and while outlasting both 

Robert Viney (151) and Colin Burt (211) was not able to stave off 

Geelong's Steve Haberman whose unbeaten 219/219 won for him

10th LADIES DOUBLE BARREL CHAMPIONSHIP 

With a field of 25 all anxious to record a national title victory the 

competition was keen and strong. Victorian ladies Pauline Clarke 

and Fave Burton produced some excellent shootina as did our 

international visitor, Judy Wegner from USA. A verfdetermined 

Faye Burton was not going to let this one pass and scoring 58/58 

took the ladiestltle from Pauline Clarke 51/58 withludy Wegner in 

overall third place with a score of 52/53. The ladies event while not 

strong in numbers was strong in quality with the scores an indica- 

tion of the ladies' ability.

10th JUNIOR DOUBLE BARREL 

CHAMPIONSHIP 

The quality of those competing stood out in the junior event with 

Glen Hayden from Noorat in Victoria shooting the possible to 

emerge a clear winner overall. Not far behind were Danny Di 

Conza 49/50 from Melbourne and Jay Cruse from St Helens 50/52

who will both benefit from the experience and continue to show 

their ability in the years ahead.

36th SINGLE BARREL CHAMPIONSHIPS 

Sponsored by Winchester and with conditions throughout the 

championships better than what may have been expected the 

single barrel produced some good shooting. Tasmanian shooters 

while not ~ ~ dominant in the event score-wise certainlv took the 

honours so far 3s numbers are concerted w~ih no less than 83

Cressy shooter Grahani Blaskett whose score of 51/52 look ihlrd 

place in AA Grade First n AA and obv~ously benefiting by the 

recent competition in the New Zealand Nationals was another well 

known shooter from Katannins Gun Club. Tim Catllng who on the 

day could not hold off the challenge from the multi-disciplined 

Kevin Perkins from Illawarra who recording an unbeaten 69/69 

was an emotional and extremely popular winner of the single 

barrel title with Jason Werner of Melbourne Gun Club and John 

Miatt from Tasmanian Gun Club taking the respective junior and 

veterans sections.

2nd LADIES SINGLE BARREL CHAMPIONSHIP 

Competing for the Winchester Trophy and the IBIS Traps Per- 

petual Trophy the ladies single barrel was keenly contested. 

A win for New Zealand in the event with well known and much 

travelled Zelda Maclure from Waitemata taking the ladies title 

with a score of46/50. A good battle took place for overall second 

and third with Marilvn Dwiaht from Corowa scorina 41/52 to take 

second place overail from one of the herd workin; off~ce ladies 

Nanette McCallum Like the double barrel this event whlle in its 

infancy so far as years go will prove to te a very popular tltle and 

one of the ones to win

CHAMPIONSHIP 

Generally referred to as the points championship, this title event 

being the third of the Macklntosh quallfylng events is always full of 

interest With sponsorsh~p from Winchester the points can be the 

make or break event so far as making the Mackintosh team is concerned 

Producing some of the best of the shooting so far NT 

shooter and State Coachlng Director Greg Chan practised what he 

preached by shooting the only possible 150/ISO to emerge a clear 

winner wlth the second of championships for the Northern Territorv

MACKINTOSH INTERNATIONAL 

TEAMS MATCH 

Cartridges for all three Mackintosh teams were made available 

by Winchester for those who wished to use them. A little dis- 

appointing lo see one or two of those competing m the team 

accepting the offer from Winchester and not using the shells in 

competition. Let's hope that this doesn't happen agaln for a while. 

As there is no obligation to use the shells that are generously made 

available there should be a moral obligation if they are taken for 

that purpose. 

For the first time in the history of the competition all cartridges 

were 2891 and Winchester provided additional shells for those 

who not having used the 28gr shells wanted a round of practlce 

prior to their events. 

The ladies and juniors whlch are not shot on the afternoon follow- 

ing the points event were led by Faye Burton 249/250 and Glen 

Hayden 237/250 as the highest qualifiers into the teams. The 

strength of shooters in Victoria so far as ladies and juniors are con- 

cerned was noticeable with a total of six out often shooters coming 

from that State. 

The open team was led by highest qualifier Ross Walsh from 

Broken Hill 248/250 with Faye Burton qualifying for the open and 

ladles team with 242/250. State representation in the open team. 

SA 4. Vic 6, NSW 8, Qld 3. NT 2, Tas 6. WA 1. 

Wlth scores for the Macklntosh not publicly declared until the 

completion of the English match in July, High Guns were won by 

Open Sperry Marshall 298/300 Tas., repeating the same victory 

recorded in Tasmania in 1975: Ladies. Pauline Clarke 278/300.

ALLAN BROWN CLUB TEAMS MATCH 

The well contes~ed club learns malch which t.as been domin- 

aled in recent years by the Echuco Club produced a new viinner 

in 1990 and anoiher success for the N'S The five-nlan Darwin learn 

recorded a score of 782/825 to take the match from Echuca 

766/825 With Tasrnanlan club Cressy finishing in third place with 

a score of 712/750 Spokesman for the Darwm Club was the new 

member to the National Executive. Phil Grove who was very 

pleased for his club and the Territory 

Champion Club Teams 1990 - Darwln Gun Club, NT. 782/825 

VIC., and Glen Hayden 290/300 in the Junior teams event.

year of competit~on this event has been won by many good 

shooters over its years of existence. Proving that versatility is the 

key, the polnts champion from 1989, Graham Blaskett added 

another National Title to his credit with a very well put together 

198/200. With a magnificent trophy provided by Olympic Targets, 

competition was more than keen however the name of the title says 

it all as this event really sorts shooters out. At the close of shooting 

Lyn Curtis from Bairnsdale with a very creditable 197/200 had to 

be satisfied with first in AA behind overall Graham Blaskett who 

was adding to Tasmania's success on their home ground. At the 

risk of repeattng oneself, Glen Hayden was too strong for the 

luniors with a score of 117/125 with another win to the popular and 

well known Malcolm Fuller 105/125 in the veteran sections and 

Judy Wegner. USA, 135/150 in the ladies section of the championship.

30th DOUBLE RISE CHAMPIONSHIP

many fancied one of the Viclorians to take out thls the last of the 

National Titles for 1990 One of the Vlctorlans dld and 11 was Jon 

Whittakers from Echuca who prove3 to be loo good on the day for 

all cameras recording a score of 62/70 to win for h~mself the 

National Double R~se Championship. Another of the Nationals hard 

workers, shoot marshal John Murphy figured in the results with his 

score of 61/70 proving to be too much for the rest of the field of AA 

shooters. V~ctory again to Judy Wegner, ladies 39/40, Glen 

Hayden 41/50 and Kevin Aylett 43/60 who all had enjoyed good 

results in their competitions.

10th COMARK DEAWILLE DOUBLES 

For the 10th successive year the Deauvllle Doubles was spon- 

sored by Commercial Marketing Co. of Sydney, courtesy of Mr 

Geoif Rabbidoe. This event while not a National Title is alwavs 

well supp-ir.ed with keen compet1r.on The Bur~ess sol ~obarand 

Tasmania were amongst those most fancied in :his event however 

they could do no beuer than IIntsh in Third place with the11 com. 

bined score of 30/31 which is good shooting at any time. Trevor 

and Jan Heard from Ceduna in South Australia 20/21 pushed the 

winners from Victoria, Faye and Ken Burton all the way and 

although not winning were very pleased with their second placing. 

The benefit of a lot of shooting throughout the week certainly held 

Faye Burton in good stead and this was a popular victory for both 

Faye and Ken who are strong s~pporters of shooting at all times. 

Their combined score of 21/21 won the day for them in this 

popular family event which after 10 years on the program had 

established its own tradition due no doubt to the assistance 

received from the sponsors of the event, Commercial Marketing. 

GLENN CUP 

Contested m New Zealand this year with Australia the defending 

champion. At the close of compet~tion Australia and New Zealand 

were locked together on 118/120. Under the terms of the competition 

the trophy returned to Australia to be competed for next in 

1991 at the ACTA National Trap Championships at Whiteman 

Park, Perth.

Trophy by Mrs Mur~el Porter, wlfe of the late Ron Porter, a

OLDEST COMPETITOR 

The oldest competitor to attend the Tassle Trap was 

George Richardson from Hobart Gun Club who had turned 82

GUN CLUB INC. 

The Esperance Bay Gun Club conducted its 28th successful 

Easter Carnival on the weekend and 60 shooters came from as far 

as Koolan Island to compete for $7000 worth of trophies. As usual 

the Goldfields clubs were in strong attendance. Esperance has 

become known for its hosoitalitv over the vears and this vear was 

no exception with good shooting, good meals and good entertain- 

ment after the shoot. 

The competitions started on the Friday with:
