Voor Against the Day, de nieuwe serie werken van Luc Tuymans
honderden ‘lichtende’ beeldschermen minitieus geobserveerd,
demonstreren. In de eindeloze beeldenstroom is alles even interessant
Het levert in Against the Day opnieuw
Luc Tuymans’ schilderijen The Man from Wiels.
Against the Day, qu’il présente pour la première fois à Wiels, plusieurs
dans les tableaux de Tuymans intitulés The Man from Wiels.
foreword
en
For Against the Day, the new series of works by Luc Tuymans
that is being presented for the first time in Wiels, several hundred
‘light-emitting’ screens are conscientiously observed, in
order that a selection be made for a critical essay exhibition on
virtual reality and its impact on our perception of reality. Here
no cyber fantasies or futuristic visions that distract; rather,
attention is placed on the claim of the media and new technologies
to likewise capture all aspects of human life in an image.
The game of exhibitionism and voyeurism that in the television
shows of recent years seeks to shift the boundaries of the
conceivable, alternates with the latest technological discoveries
to virtually design human personas, as well as matter, like
complete interiors, and to demonstrate the make-ability of the
world. In this endless stream of images everything is equally
interesting or subordinate; after all, the digital image can be
permanently adjusted and improved. With what Tuymans himself
calls the anachronistic medium of ‘painting’ he brings to
the foreground – excavates, in a manner of speaking – the true
‘function’ of these images. This is his known conceptual way of
working, intensified through his diffuse and suggestive brush
strokes and colour palette.
Against the Day delivers anew an essay on images and how
they function in the spreading of messages, whether it is about
the code of the Jesuit order or the reclaiming of fantasy by
Disney. Tuymans’ series, in the way it encircles the problematical
and brings to the surface that which lies just below – the
forgotten or underlying aspects – has the character of a modern
sort of ‘history-painting’, capturing in an image the impact and
scope of important historical changes. We are well acquainted
with Tuymans’ dissecting of Nazism and Belgium’s colonialism,
or nationalism. In this series he deals with the most immediate
horizon on which images and our perceptions thereof are
situated, those of the perfect simulations on luminous screens.
Instant power of attraction is, as always, coupled with his am-
ivalent reticence in regard to these perfect illusions. Tuymans
undermines that immediacy of images by way of an ominous
underlying surface tension. In Wiels, where Luc Tuymans has
been involved since the early planning stages, the excavation of
‘hidden’ and ominous aspects is quite literally present, albeit
not directly in the exhibition. The title is projected inside an
unlit leftover silo, as veritable feedback on the existence of withdrawn
daylight faraway from the lens. That was also the fate of
an anonymous corpse discovered under the foundations during
the renovations. In the search for the possible identity of that
person, the most sophisticated forensic methods of facial reconstruction
and computer simulation were employed; however,
this still did not reveal the true identity. The evidence remaining
is now not this abstract schematic mask in a video clip but
the scope of the urban legend that this kind of event creates,
and which is fully encapsulated in Luc Tuymans’ painting, The
Man from Wiels.
The way in which Luc Tuymans adapted the unusual architecture
of Wiels in order to exploit the radiating daylight for
an attentive viewing-experience, is one of the results of a very
intensive collaboration with the artist and his assistants. For
Wiels it has been a privilege to provide a platform for an artist
who engages himself in articulating the most all-embracing issue
of our time.
We thank the galleries Zeno X Antwerp and David Zwirner
New York for their cooperation in the organisation of the
exhibition and for the lending of the works. Thanks also goes to
the government and to the private individuals who support
Wiels, who for this exhibition have known the generous companionship
of sponsor SG Private Banking. And to the institutions
that coproduce the exhibition: Rooseum-Moderna
Museet Malmö and cac Malaga, we hereby wish an experience
equally as provocative as the one we have enjoyed.
Ironically enough, Edison was already deaf when he
designed the phonograph, and Plateau blind when he
invented the first rudimentary form of cinema.
— Luc Tuymans, On the Image
graven in Paul Thomas Andersons film There Will Be Blood.
Nochtans begint Carrolls roman
Alice in Wonderland in een hol, en Tuymans’ werk Against
the Day in een ander hol; alsof iedere oppervlakte inherent verbonden
Source material,
de graver van Against the Day gebeurt er een gelijkaardige verdunningsoperatie,
een evacuatie van het binnenste. Net zoals in
Map in de reeks Against the
Allicht is
2 Zoals Martin Gardner opmerkt, in Carrolls werk Silvie and
Pynchon Against the Day, jusqu’au voyage vers le vide tellurique
tombes dans le film There Will Be Blood de Paul Thomas Anderson.
Cependant, Carroll commence Alice
Dans Against the Day, le terrassier mène

entièrement dans le futur (dans l’archéologie de la mémoire) ;

Ironically enough, Edison was already deaf when he
designed the phonograph, and Plateau blind when he
invented the first rudimentary form of cinema.
— Luc Tuymans, On the Image
Excavating earth is a fundamentally paradoxical act. Lewis
Carroll would say that digging a hole is nothing else than
folding out a surface towards the bottom and creating the opposite
of another surface: it is a removal of depth. Luc Tuymans’s
digger in the series Against the Day – just like Lewis Carroll’s
rabbit (whose hole reveals the thinness of reality to the mirror
and its two sides) – does not create depths but surfaces. To
excavate the building from within is to turn all of its mass into
mere surface, into its double façade without thickness. It is true
that there is a history of the hole and its surfaces; there is a history
of the Industrial Revolution told in terms of levitations
and excavations, from the balloon journey with which Thomas
Pynchon’s novel Against the Day begins and ends, to the journey
to the hole in the earth made by Daniel Plainview, the well
and grave digger in Paul Thomas Anderson’s film There Will Be
Blood. The Jesuits’ own history, from Tuymans’s perspective in
the series Restoration (2006) and Les revenants (2007), although
intimately linked to the infinitesimal inner world and the abjuration
of emptiness of the Baroque, is a history of expulsion
and exile, of being thrown into the most vacuous and subtle
materialness: that of a ghost. Perhaps this condition was already
present implicitly in the morbid rule of obedience of the Company
of Jesus, perinde ac cadaver (like a dead body).
In the history of the Jesuits, Lewis Carroll, the Industrial
Revolution and Luc Tuymans, the world no longer has any
depth. Nevertheless, Carroll starts Alice in a hole and Tuymans
does the same with Against the Day, as if all surfaces were inherently
linked to essential holes putting pressure on the obverse
from the reverse. In this sense, Luc Tuymans’s work is a meticulous
study of surface technologies. Ignatius of Loyola in the series
Restoration is the image of the funerary mask of the founder
of the Company of Jesus painted based on a printed photograph
taken from some book on the history of the Jesuits. Here, we
can see the exhaustive hollowing out of the matter, from surface
to surface, of Loyola’s face to the funeral mask, from the mask
to a photographic reproduction, and from this to the printed reproduction,
until it becomes the revenant (ghost) of Tuymans’s
Loyola. In the digger in Against the Day a similar process of
thinning and hollowing out of the interior takes place. As in the
film There Will Be Blood, it is about a hole being drilled in the
matter as the first act of the industry, the pact with the powers
of darkness and hollowness which, as Tuymans intuits in On the
Image, announces the birth of the mechanical image, reproducible,
transmissible: this is why he opens the series Against the
Day in this industrial hole, similar to the Lascaux caves; as if
making the first image were like boring a hole in the darkness.
Nothing is deeper than the skin, says Gilles Deleuze in
Logique du sens, quoting Paul Valéry. Map in the series Against
the Day is an image based on a digital map used by 3d animators
to work on the texture of the skin, which, in turn, reminds
one of Titian’s Flaying of Marsyas. In Titian’s painting, under
Marsyas’s skin the depth of the organic mass is revealed, its
plutonic thickness, as if an infinite amount of shreds could be
torn from Marsyas’s flesh. Map, on the contrary, catalyses surfaces
and edges. For Tuymans, tearing the Baroque painting to
shreds is a reconquest of the surface through the topographical
and the dermal: Marsyas’s skin, Titian’s canvas, the map
of texture, Tuymans’s painting. However, in the ‘topodermy’
of Map the membrane of Marsyas’s eye is preserved. Marsyas’s
eye brings back the round, black bird eyes, which Tuymans
has painted many times and which – like the hole in the wall
in Hole, which implies the construction of the exterior by the
forces of the inner hollowness – cannot see beyond the mem-
26 27
ane that covers them, contrary to the standard eye function.
As if the image were born in them, Tuymans’s eyes are simultaneously
the hole and the mirror, the supporting structure of
the surface and the surface that reflects everything. (Hence the
importance of glasses in Luc Tuymans’s paintings, as replicas of
the hollow surface of the eye.) In this sense, Big Brother, a still of
the famous reality show, is like a big blind eye, a white, opaque
eyeball which is the ghost of the exasperated look, which, superfluous
like that of the blind Plateau when he invented the
projector, can only evoke its own hollowness.
Perhaps no one has perceived like Lewis Carroll that building
surfaces is making holes, that each surface evokes holes and
that these, in turn, lead to other holes. The rabbit’s hole and
Alice’s mirror are analogous; Titian’s skin and the excavated
building are, as well. Carroll, the mathematician and photographer,
is a kind of Leibniz outside the Baroque: both the monad
and the rabbit’s hole are mirrors; the former links perception to
inner ubiquity¹, the latter generates the series of surfaces that
make up both sides of the exterior. This way, the mirror and the
hole coexist in Reflexions (the holes reflected in the glasses of an
eye), like an intermediate point between two infinites. Perhaps
the violence in Luc Tuymans’s paintings lies in the unbearable
Source material, Hole, 2008
simultaneousness of these coexistences, like Lewis Carroll’s
handkerchief that neither had an outside nor an inside.² With
Tuymans, the image is built up on both sides at the same time,
after which it abandons its identity. Gilles Deleuze says that
Alice’s identity is put at stake as soon as in Carroll’s language
the identity of things is no longer a certainty and things can be
something, or its reverse. The personal ego needs the world and
God, says Deleuze. For Luc Tuymans, the identity of the image
is removed in the event of memory. Just like Alice, who is always
bigger or smaller than she really is, memory in Tuymans’s
work continuously avoids the present; his images are built simultaneously
completely in the past (in the accumulation of
the memory) and completely in the future (in the archaeology
of the memory); their present is nothing but pictorial presence,
the foundation of paradox. That is why Loyola’s head is and is
not Ignatius of Loyola and Reinhard Heydrich in Die Zeit (1988)
is and is not Reinhard Heydrich. They are – like the excavated
building and the torn skin – something much more precarious.
Probably, it is this precariousness which makes the image possible
for Tuymans; hence the surface technologies and the episteme
of the hole, and hence G. Dam and Plateau.
archeologische site of ruïne.
Based on a photo I took of a building site at night, the
image rather evokes the feeling of an archaeological
ruin. Seen as a whole, its desolation gives the impression
that something is being excavated rather than
built. The paradoxical is rendered from the doable; it
forms a total blockade between the idea of something
being sublimated, or annihilated.

aanrijdende auto’s, in blinde vlekken resulteren. Afstand
Distance
et vitesse deviennent abstraites.
Like in Sniper, there is also a limited field of vision
here, or how an access route becomes visible by a
night watchman: a sort of tunnel vision where only the
shining parts, the headlights of oncoming cars, result
in blind spots; distance and speed become abstracted.

luc tuymans
nl
Luc Tuymans is geboren in Mortsel (be) in 1958. Hij woont en
werkt in Antwerpen (be).
Feu d’artifice bijvoorbeeld
eerste solotentoonstelling komt in Oostende.
nieuwe solotentoonstellingen. Dagelijks vertoeft Tuymans in
in Wandeling (1986).
Tuymans’ solotentoonstelling
tentoonstellingen als Documenta ix (1992), The Broken Mirror
(1993) en Unbound (1994) verleenden zijn werk internationale
uitstraling. Nadien volgden andere belangrijke projecten, zoals
kreeg in Tate Modern in Londen.
eind 2007 tentoon gesteld in Boedapest (Mücsarnok Kunsthalle),
luc tuymans
fr
Né à Mortsel (be), dans la périphérie d’Anvers (be), en 1958,
Luc Tuymans travaille et vit encore toujours à Anvers. Adolescent,
On retrouve
expositions telles que Documenta ix (1992), The Broken Mirror
Zacheta National Gallery of Art en Varsevie.
In an age when painting was said to be dead, Tuymans
experimented with the medium of film. Between 1980 and 1985
scripts were written and drawn, but barely any paintings were
produced. Feu d’artifice for example was canned on July 7,
1982 in just a few hours, with the help of some colleagues and
friends. Over the next years several scenarios were written, until
a solo exhibit was organised in Ostend in 1985, where some
of Tuymans’ paintings hung in the deserted swimming pool of
the prestigious Palais des Thermes. His first public showing
became fact.
With his love for paint rekindled, more solo exhibits were
organised every year. Tuymans now works in his studio every
day, perusing books to research his subjects. Nearly all his
paintings are based on existing material such as drawings, personal
photographs, found artefacts and movie stills. Tuymans
almost always focuses on specific meanings reaching beyond
what is shown, often founding the content on historical facts
and materials, just like Wandeling (1986). This seemingly quiet
image hides a charged subject, a group of Nazi’s walking in a
Berlin park.
Often Tuymans will study one subject at length and spread
it over several paintings. The second world war, Belgium’s
colonial history, historical figures, extreme right parties in
Flanders and catholic brotherhoods: they all receive a place
in his works. In 1992 Zeno X Gallery presented the series Der
diagnostische Blick which to this day is among his most famous
work. The images are based on pictures Tuymans came across
in a medical guide titled ‘Der diagnostische Blick’. Such works
as Sculpture, Leopard, Tsjombe and Lumumba, examples
from his most controversial series Mwana Kitoko (2000), have
photographical references. This important aspect is never too
far away from Tuymans’ work.
His self-willed way of painting has made Tuymans one the
most respected painters of his generation. His work can be
found in prominent international museums, like the Museum of
Modern Art (moma) in New York, the Centre Georges Pompidou
in Paris, the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Museum
of Contemporary Art and the Museum of Modern Art in
Los Angeles, the De Pont Tilburg, Sammlung Goetz München,
Kunstmuseum Bern as well as in all major Belgian collections.
Tuymans’ solo exhibit in the Kunsthalle in Bern in 1992 and his
participation in the exhibits Documenta ix (1992), The Broken
Mirror (1993) and Unbound (1994) all gave his work international
resonance. Followed by other important projects such as
the Biennale of Sydney (2000), Biennale of Venice (1997, 2001)
and the Biennale of Sao Paulo in Brasil (2004).
In 2004 he was the first living Belgian to receive an overview
exhibit in the Tate Modern in London. The exhibit then
moved on to K21 Kunstsammlung in Düsseldorf and was the
start of an unseen flurry of exhibits. At the moment Tuymans is
preparing for several large exhibits in Eastern Europe, Asia and
the United States. At the end of 2007 his works were shown in
Budapest (Mücsarnok Kunsthalle), after which they travelled
on to Haus der Kunst in Munich and Zacheta National Gallery
of Art in Warsaw. The spring of 2009 saw the opening of a
large solo exhibition in the usa, which travelled to the Museum
of Modern Art in San Francisco and the Wexner Center for the
Arts in Columbus. This exhibition will be shown at the Dallas
Museum of Art in 2011.
