The NYSESLAT is<br />

Purpose of the NYSESLAT<br />

• a me<strong>as</strong>ure of <strong>English</strong> language achievement<br />

• an annual <strong>as</strong>sessment<br />

– untimed<br />

• for all LEP/ELLs in grades K-12<br />

• required to be administered in all public and charter<br />

schools in <strong>New</strong> <strong>York</strong> <strong>State</strong>; non-public schools are<br />

encouraged to participate.<br />

The NYSESLAT is an UNTIMED test.<br />

The time allotment indicated for each grade<br />

band should be adequate. However, if<br />

necessary, additional time should be<br />

provided.<br />

Allow any student working<br />

productively to have <strong>as</strong> much time <strong>as</strong><br />

he or she needs to complete the test.<br />

Answer Sheets<br />

• Schools will receive 2 pre-printed answer sheets for<br />

each student from the Regional Information Center<br />

– Blank answer sheets will also be provided for<br />

new entrants<br />

• Ensure that students’ names and ID numbers are<br />

correct before the <strong>as</strong>sessment<br />

Students in Grades K–1 and Grade 2 will mark their answers in<br />

their test booklets. A teacher or aide must transcribe the<br />

students’ responses onto the machine-scorable answer sheets<br />

exactly <strong>as</strong> the students recorded them in the test booklets.<br />

NEW: Transcribers must initial the scoring sheets.<br />
