The Lana story begins back in the 20’s, no<br />
not the 1920’s but the 2000’s.<br />
Lana was chosen because it means wool in<br />
Italian.<br />
Whilst at <strong>co</strong>llege and university, I developed<br />
my fascination with knitting techniques by<br />
experimenting with different materials and<br />
methods. I used materials from clothing,<br />
plastic bags, paper, tea bags, wire and other<br />
miscellaneous materials I found around the<br />
house.<br />
I established an interest in giant knitting<br />
whilst working on a charity project where I<br />
helped raise money for break through breast<br />
cancer. This involved asking members of the<br />
public to knit with needles that were made<br />
from drainpipes for a donation to the charity.<br />
During this year long experience I cemented<br />
my passion for the art of giant hand knitting.<br />
During my university studies, I under took a<br />
placement at a hand knitting yarn <strong>co</strong>mpany<br />
to learn more about the elements involved in<br />
hand knitted patterns.<br />
For my final degree showcase, I developed<br />
the technique which I currently use for the<br />
knitted accessories. My degree show was<br />

displayed in a shop window off Carnaby<br />
Street, London. Shortly afterwards I<br />
undertook a live installation for a week in<br />
Oasis’s shop window in Argyll Street,<br />
London. I was also a finalist in the Knitted<br />
Textile Award in 2011. People were<br />
fascinated by my technique and products.<br />

THE new mayor of Yarm will be a familiar<br />
face<br />
Peter Monck returns as the chairman of Yarm<br />
Town Council for the third time, and has said he<br />
will accept the mantle of mayor for ceremonial<br />
purposes only.<br />
The 63-year-old grandfather and father-of-two<br />
replaces Jason Hadlow, who has served as Yarm<br />
Mayor for the last six years.<br />
Mr Monck, chairman for two-year stretches in<br />
1995 and 2005, has pledged “to try and bring<br />
some sense into the <strong>co</strong>uncil”.<br />
Re<strong>co</strong>rd number of students to study<br />
Medicine and Dentistry<br />
Nearly 20 per cent of the Sixth Formers leaving<br />
this summer have gained places at dentistry and<br />
medical schools.<br />
Simon Crabtree, Head of Careers at Yarm<br />
School, said: “Out of 96 Sixth Form leavers this<br />
year, 17 are going on to universities around the<br />
<strong>co</strong>untry to study medicine and dentistry. This is a<br />
re<strong>co</strong>rd number and is an achievement of which<br />
we are immensely proud as a school.”<br />
THE leader of Stockton Council has warned the<br />
green light for a free school in Ingleby Barwick<br />
would lead to 1,300 new homes on the site.<br />
Developers behind proposals for a 600-place<br />
free school, 150-place sixth form and 350 homes<br />
at Low Lane, High Leven, were questioned at a<br />
public inquiry about their future plans for the<br />
site.<br />
“We heard at the inquiry that, whilst this<br />
planning application proposes 350 homes, the<br />
Treasury will in fact receive a financial<br />
<strong>co</strong>ntribution towards the <strong>co</strong>st of the school from<br />
the development of a further 950 homes<br />
proposed by Tiviot Way Investments Ltd.<br />

In the early Twentieth Century women knew<br />
their place! The class system was rigidly<br />
enforced, and the best examples of this, was in<br />
the weekly and monthly magazines for women.<br />
As the main source of revenue was from<br />
advertising, it was important for the editors of<br />
these magazines to target their audience<br />
<strong>co</strong>rrectly, - just like now. There was no<br />
television to show how everyone lived, and the<br />
cinema was the only other source of visions of<br />
“real life”.<br />
At the outset of World War II, the largest selling<br />
women's magazine was Woman, a weekly<br />
which gave the reader an intimate personal<br />
service, with a se<strong>co</strong>ndary emphasis on<br />
entertainment. It was targeted at the middle<br />
class and survived the war intact.<br />
The Se<strong>co</strong>nd World War profoundly affected the<br />
magazine industry. Paper was rationed and so<br />
were the number of <strong>co</strong>pies that <strong>co</strong>uld be<br />

and mothers. A woman's best <strong>co</strong>ntribution was<br />
to remain unchanged when the soldier's came<br />
home. This was not to be.<br />
When rationing ended <strong>co</strong>mpletely in 1954.<br />
Women's magazines blossomed. No more<br />
“Make do and mend”, fashion came to the fore<br />
and it was not seen as unpatriotic to lust after<br />
designer gowns from Paris. Foreign travel was<br />
possible for the few, and magazines like Vogue<br />
and Harpers starting aiming at a less elite<br />
readership.<br />
In “The Swinging Sixties” everything changed,<br />
youth culture came to the fore, and old styles<br />
of editorial were swept awayº. Fashion,<br />
photographed by the likes of David Bailey,<br />
Norman Parkinson, Duffy, was exciting and<br />
sometimes extreme. Models became celebrities<br />
in their own right, and were not now just<br />
members of the aristocracy. As most homes had<br />
television, and the e<strong>co</strong>nomy was booming,<br />
they were seen as less of a luxury. Everything<br />

PLACES TO GO: Glaisdale for the<br />
Museum of Victorian Science<br />
I was amused to find in reading the tripadvisor<br />
reports on this fascinating little museum that many<br />
people had difficulty finding it. Glaisdale is a little<br />
village in the Esk Valley, served by the trains<br />
between Middlesbrough and Whitby. I went to<br />
visit the museum with Paul Duck, one of our<br />
apprentices at Chester-le-Track, who met me on<br />
the train at Eaglescliffe, where he works. We<br />
changed at Middlesbrough on to the little train<br />
which shuttles back and forth to Whitby and<br />
alighted at the two platform station at Glaisdale.<br />
Finding the museum from there was easy - down<br />
the hill towards the potentially wel<strong>co</strong>ming (but<br />
shut) Arncliffe Arms, we found the bungalow up to<br />
our right with a special museum sign erected to<br />
find our way in.<br />
This is not a <strong>co</strong>nventional museum. Firstly, it is<br />
small.<br />
The maximum number of visitors who can attend<br />
at a time is five, but four is better. Se<strong>co</strong>ndly it is<br />
not the sort of place you take children, and<br />
neither is it the sort of museum where you are<br />
en<strong>co</strong>uraged to touch things, in fact to do so would<br />
often be not only unwise but positively dangerous.<br />
The Museum of Victorian Science is for adults<br />
who are curious, the sort who like "shiny brass<br />
machines that go fizz and pop". It is run by the<br />
highly knowledgeable and practically gifted Tony<br />
Swift who might be a little eccentric but has been<br />
described as a "national treasure in a national<br />
treasure house". Paul and I negotiated for a<br />
slightly abridged talk from the proprietor, for the<br />
time in which the train went to Whitby, the crew<br />
had their meal break, and the train then came<br />
back to Glaisdale to pick us up. We reckon we<br />
had 90 minutes and negotiated a £10 charge but<br />
the normal rate is £10 a person for a very personal<br />
2 hour demonstration. The vast majority of people<br />
visiting think that is good value. Tony's trip<br />
advisor ratings are:<br />

Understandably, Tony is a little miffed about the<br />
single guest who rated him as average! Every<br />
surface in the room which houses the<br />
demonstration is crammed with equipment. All<br />
sorts of themes are followed, from X-rays and<br />
telegraphy to electron beams and the early<br />
dis<strong>co</strong>veries of atomic science. Paul, being tall,<br />
was put in charge of the light switch on the wall<br />
but I was (sensibly) not allowed to touch anything.<br />
We went through all manner of experiements in<br />
which I learned the difference between a Geissler<br />
tube, a bouquet tube and a railway tube. If I'm<br />
honest I cannot remember it all a few weeks later,<br />
but it was fascinating stuff, rounded off with a<br />
demonstration of Dr. Frankenstein's laboratory,<br />
<strong>co</strong>mplete with flashing lights, smoke, sound<br />
effects and so on. If I describe it, I'll ruin the<br />
surprise. Electromagnetism, levitation, wireless<br />

telegraphy, early radio transmissions,<br />
advertisements featuring the claimed benefits of<br />
radiation all feature in the talk, and we only got a<br />
shortened version of it! It is essential to book<br />
ahead, best by telephone to check when Tony is<br />
available and check your train times to see how<br />
long you want to stay in the village. Seats are not<br />
reservable on the train so you can delay your<br />
return if you want to.<br />
Had we stayed in the village longer, we <strong>co</strong>uld<br />
have taken a walk round the local area and had<br />
some lunch in the close by Arncliffe Arms. As it<br />
was we took the lunchtime train back to<br />
Middlesbrough after a fascinating morning which I<br />
hope many other readers would choose to enjoy.<br />
