35 YEARS<br />
On 1st June <strong>2013</strong> Derek Campbell’s Exhaust &<br />
Tyre Centre will have been trading for 35 years<br />
having been in this business since 1978. When<br />
I look at that sentence, I wonder just what<br />
happened to those 35 years!! I well remember<br />
those early days, when the racks will full of<br />
limited sizes of tyres and we were still selling<br />
numbers of crossply tyres which have now<br />
be<strong>co</strong>me vintage! Radial sizes were limited and<br />
I used to buy 155 x 13 and 165 13 tyres by the<br />
hundred because they fit everything!<br />
Old John Rowley gave us the opportunity to run<br />
the business from his former Yarm Depot. He<br />
was a true gentleman and a man of his word and<br />
he <strong>co</strong>nducted his business with a handshake. He<br />
would not have known nor realised the<br />
opportunity he had given us, and we <strong>co</strong>uld not<br />
have realised that the Yarm Depot would be the<br />
basis of our lives and our children’s lives for a<br />
lifetime. On the day we took over we simply put<br />
red ‘UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT’ signs in the<br />
windows and <strong>co</strong>ntinued with the business.<br />
On our first day we were taking ‘Barclaycard’<br />
payments without even having a <strong>co</strong>ntract for the<br />
service. I remember the Rep calling to explain<br />
the procedure and have us sign the <strong>co</strong>ntract and I<br />
remember also being shocked to the <strong>co</strong>re when I<br />
realised that they took a % from every sale... in<br />
my innocence I had thought that they would pay<br />
us a premium for taking payments what way!<br />
In those days I <strong>co</strong>uld remember every part<br />
number for every job and all the prices too. Our<br />
first advert for the business featured ‘Tyres from<br />
£4.95’ that seems absolutely impossible now.<br />
How <strong>co</strong>uld I have envisaged the massive ranges<br />
and prices available now? As cars have be<strong>co</strong>me<br />
more advanced and more technical, so has the<br />
tyre market and we are now inundated with<br />
information about the product along with Fuel<br />
Efficiency and Wet Grip details but we also have<br />
to bear in mind that many of our customers need<br />
value for money along with safety, as the<br />
recession has hit most of our pockets.<br />
It does worry me that many are not aware of the<br />
importance of good tyres with legal tread and<br />
how much this does affect safety, performance,<br />

stopping distance and fuel <strong>co</strong>nsumption. Just<br />
regular pressure checks can improve fuel<br />
<strong>co</strong>nsumption so much. I would urge anyone who<br />
would like advice about tyres, their safety and<br />
even checks on tyre pressures to pop into Derek<br />
Campbell’s at the bottom of Lockheed Close on<br />
Preston Farm Industrial Esate, at any time.<br />
I would take this opportunity to thank everyone<br />
who has given us their support over the years. I<br />
appreciate that we have many loyal customers<br />
who have be<strong>co</strong>me good friends. I have had<br />
amazing support from customers, suppliers and<br />
my staff. I know this has kept the business going<br />
over the years and it is my aim to keep serving the<br />
folk of Stockton, Yarm and surrounding districts.<br />
My goal is to provide a secure future for the boys<br />
who work for me, and my hope is that the<br />
business will <strong>co</strong>ntinue in the ‘family’ for a very<br />
long time.<br />

My love affair with what is<br />
now termed “Vintage”<br />
clothing and accessories<br />
started in 1969 when I was a<br />
teenager in London. In those<br />
days it was called “Old<br />
Fashioned”, “Hippie” or<br />
”What your grandma threw<br />
away”.I still have wonderful<br />
pieces that I have kept boxed<br />
for posterity, (or my<br />
daughter) though the<br />
likelihood of them still fitting<br />
me after all these years is<br />
dubious!<br />
I bought my first 1930s crepe de<br />
chine dress from Kensington<br />
Market, for ten shillings, (a weeks<br />
pocket money).It was three sizes<br />
too big and I hand sewed it down<br />
the back to take it in. When I<br />
wore it I was Ginger Rogers, and<br />
felt like I have stepped out of an<br />
old Hollywood movie! My mother<br />
was very amused.<br />
I was hooked - the rustle of taffeta,<br />
the swirl of a circular skirt, the<br />
cling of a satin bias cut dress,the<br />
unbelievable softness of a<br />
swansdown jacket..and as most<br />
came from jumble sales, street<br />
markets or relatives, it was<br />
affordable.<br />
Who would have thought in the<br />
1960s and 1970s that Mary<br />
Quant, and Biba clothes that were<br />
almost designed to be disposable,<br />
would be so keenly sought after<br />
fifty years in the future?<br />
High street shops and<br />
International designers hadn’t<br />
plagiarised the styles, so they<br />
really did look unique.There were<br />
no fashion bloggers, as the<br />
Internet was years in the future,<br />
auction houses had yet to<br />
dis<strong>co</strong>ver selling internationally by<br />
digital photos, and it was possible<br />
to find vast amounts of 1940s<br />
Utility clothing still in the backs of<br />
peoples wardrobes, as it was then<br />
only about twenty five years since<br />
the end of World War II.<br />
In the1970s, the East End of<br />
London, (which has now be<strong>co</strong>me<br />
a desirable and very expensive<br />
place to live,) Brick Lane was full<br />
of rag yards, and junk shops,<br />
bursting to the seams with<br />
Victorian day dresses, Art De<strong>co</strong><br />
silk scarves, top hats, 1950s ball<br />
gowns, diamante encrusted<br />
evening gloves, Bakelite<br />
jewellery,- everything your<br />
vintage heart desired, <strong>co</strong>uld be<br />
found with a bit of searching..all<br />
available from 4am on a Sunday<br />
morning.<br />
During the last ten years, (possibly<br />
due to the lack of inspiration in<br />
the fashion industry,) “Vintage” or<br />
“Retro” has now be<strong>co</strong>me<br />
mainstream and acceptable. If<br />
they are not <strong>co</strong>mfortable with<br />
buying se<strong>co</strong>nd hand items,<br />
teenagers now are able to satisfy<br />
their cravings to look like Olivia<br />
Newton John from “Grease” just<br />
by going to Primark. Calf length<br />
and floor length dresses are<br />
replacing skimpy tubes of fabric at<br />
School Proms, as they look great<br />
when their dates are wearing<br />
tuxedos. Every girl can be a<br />
glamour queen, without too much<br />
trouble..<br />
It is a pity the amount of people<br />
who still think their first port of<br />
call when downsizing, or dealing<br />
with deceased relatives effects is<br />
the local tip, as they are unaware<br />
that they may be of value.This<br />
means that something that has<br />
been treasured and hoarded for<br />
half a century or more, now ends<br />
up in landfill, instead of being<br />
appreciated by someone else and<br />
preserved for the next generation.<br />
I am always excited when I get<br />
asked if I am interested in buying<br />
old clothing and accessories, as<br />
there is still a possibility that there<br />
will be a lovely old frock in my<br />
size,- and maybe even with<br />
matching bag!<br />

PLACES TO GO<br />
ANNAN<br />
Annan is a small town in<br />
S<strong>co</strong>tland on the line from<br />
Carlisle to Dumfries, with a<br />
population of 8,400. It’s ideal<br />
for a day trip from the North-<br />
East, and can be <strong>co</strong>mbined<br />
with a trip to Gretna Green<br />
or Carlisle.<br />
Bearing in mind you can break<br />
your journey with a day return in<br />
either direction. A former S<strong>co</strong>ttish<br />
royal burgh, it’s a well-built town,<br />
red sandstone being the material<br />
mainly used. The Town Hall, built<br />
in Victorian style in 1878, uses the<br />
local sandstone, as does the small<br />
hotel, the Corner House Hotel<br />
where I stayed on a se<strong>co</strong>nd recent<br />
visit to the town.<br />
I deliberately stayed on a Tuesday<br />
night which is the<br />
night of the<br />
meeting of the<br />
Annan Rotary Club.<br />
They were very<br />
wel<strong>co</strong>ming and told<br />
me much about the<br />
town that I did not<br />
know. The President<br />
of the Rotary Club<br />
was also involved<br />
with the regeneration<br />
of the port in the<br />
town, which does not<br />
deserve a special visit<br />
except perhaps on<br />
Saturday 25th <strong>May</strong><br />
when there is a special<br />
festival there. It’s a 15<br />
minute walk down Port<br />
Street from the town<br />
centre. Pass under the<br />
railway bridge, walk on<br />
past various old<br />
buildings until you reach Burgh<br />
Quay. Robert Burns, who worked as<br />
an exciseman here in the 1790s.<br />
Although the port is now mainly<br />
Annan Bridge, a stone bridge built between<br />
1824 and 1827, designed by<br />
Robert Stevenson and built by John Lowry.<br />
dry, a few stranded boats remain. I<br />
understand that the pirate radio ship<br />
Caroline languished for some years<br />
in the port at Annan before being<br />
broken up.<br />

This part of Annan was once a<br />
prosperous bustling area, with the<br />
warehouses of the local merchants<br />
full of timber, cement, and grain.<br />
Now the once busy warehouses<br />
stand empty. The ship building<br />
yards here once built fine ships,<br />
which sailed all over the world,<br />
many with local names such as<br />
the ‘Annandale’ and<br />
‘Queensberry’. The largest and<br />
last clipper ship built was the 934<br />
ton ‘Sarah Nicholson’ which was<br />
launched in 1865. At the end of<br />
the 19th century, a fleet of fifty<br />
one shrimp trawlers, thirty<br />
whammel boats designed for<br />
salmon drift netting and thirteen<br />
herring boats worked out of<br />
Annan. These sturdy sailing boats<br />
fished the Solway from Annan to<br />
Maryport, Southerness, and<br />
beyond. By <strong>co</strong>mparison, today is a<br />
sorry sight, but plans for<br />
regeneration are underway.<br />
The museum in the town is free to<br />
visit, small but interesting, with<br />

My new friends at the Annan<br />
Rotary Club also took me out of<br />
town a few miles east to Eastriggs<br />
(Stage<strong>co</strong>ach bus routes 79 and 179<br />
run regularly through the day)m to<br />
the Devil’s Porridge exhibition<br />
which tells the story mof the<br />
greatest munitions factory on Earth,<br />
making ammunition for the WW1.<br />
I had a special evening opening<br />
tour as light fell, and although you<br />
can’t get there by train, it is<br />
accessible from both Annan and<br />
Gretna Green by bus. The factory<br />
straddled the border and pubs in<br />
the area were <strong>co</strong>vered by a<br />
nationalised state management<br />
scheme into the 1970s.<br />
Annan also has a further claim to<br />
fame in railway history: the train<br />

turntable was designed and<br />
developed in Annan, and it can be<br />
seen today in the National<br />
Railway Museum in York. I can<br />
also re<strong>co</strong>mmend an excellent<br />
se<strong>co</strong>nd hand book shop at the<br />
west end of the High Street, near<br />
the bridge, called the History Box.<br />

from Derby, stayed in the High<br />

went on another occasion with<br />
one of Britain’s largest railway<br />
enthusiasts, my friend Geoff<br />
Evison, to the excellent Sitar<br />
Indian restaurant also on the High<br />
