Amezaga takes up position as MEP
Mikel Irujo Amezaga has been recently appointed as a member of the European Parliament
with the Greens/European Free Alliance Group. He was the number two in the Europa de
los Pueblos list for the 2004 campaign. Now coming to replace Bernat Joan i Marí. Mr.
Irujo Amezaga is also the first president of the ALE-Youth, in the framework of the Free
Alliance. He is a leading member of the Gazte Abertzaleak, where he held the position of
Secretary for International Relations. Born in Venezuela, he studied Law in the Univer-
sidad de Navarra, Spain.
Colm Burke joins the European Parliament MEP
Colm Burk took office as one of the Parliament’s most recent appointments in June 2007,
where he now joins the EPP parliamentary group. In Ireland he took up several positions
in the Fine Gael party, noteably as Lord Mayor of the City of Cork in 2003 and 2004, and
has served in the Cork City Council from 1995 - 2007. He is also a former National Chair-
person of Young Fine Gael (1980-1981) and was a Member of National Executive of Fine
Gael the following year. Mr. Burke has also worked as a solicitor in Ireland.
Ten Berge appointed Secretary General at Eurelectric
Hans ten Berge was appointed Secretary-General at Eurelectric, replacing Paul Bulteel at the po-
sition. Mr. ten Berge is not new to the functioning of Eurelectric, since he has already been Chair-
man of the Markets Committee for several years. Following posts in a number of international
enterprises, including Exxon Chemie and Kemira Agro, Mr. ten Berge joined ENECO Energie in
November 1998 as Managing Director of Energiehandelsbedrijf, subsequently serving as a mem-
ber of the ENECO Energie Board of Management from November 1999 until January 2006.

Xirouchakis appointed Head of Visits at the European Economic
and Social Committee
Charis Xirouchakis has been appointed Head of the Visits and Publications Unit at the
European Economic and Social Committee. He has so far been senior official with the
Council of the EU responsible for visits, public events and communication policy. Mr.
Xirouchakis worked for the Committee of Permanent Representatives and has specialized
in research and development aid. He previously worked with Citibank and the European
Investment bank. He will be acting as the new head of this unit as of September 1st.
Riisgaard new Chairman at Europabio
Steen Riisgaard was named chairman of the Europabio organization representing the Eu-
ropean biotechnology industry. He is President & CEO of Novozymes A/S, a position he has
held since 2000. Mr. Riisgaard joined Novo, one of the founding companies of Novozymes,
in 1979 as a microbiologist in Enzymes R&D. He went on to occupy a number of posi-
tions in the enzyme business, including postings in Japan. Mr. Riisgaard also serves on the
boards of WWF (World Wildlife Fund) Denmark and Egmont International Holding A/S.

Beutin new Deputy Spokesperson for the Permanent Representation
of Germany to the EU
Ricklef Beutin in now Deputy Spokesperson for the German Permanent Representation to
the EU. Mr. Beutin is leaving his post in the European Commission after two years to return
to the German Foreign Service. Previously, Mr. Beutin was at the Bureau of European Poli-
cy Advisors, the policy planning staff of the EC, where he dealt with EU external relations,
namely Russia, European Neighbourhood Policy and issues of migration. Before that, Mr.
Beutin worked in the German Foreign Office in Berlin in the section for the OSCE.
Theurer joins Copura in Brussels
Sabine Theurer joined the Brussels office of Copura on 1 July. As office manager she
will be an asset to the team especially with respect to event management and back office
management. Prior to taking this position she has been assistant to the General Manager
in the Hilton Hotel, Bonn.
Laroche is the first Senior Advisor for Logos
Charles Laroche is the first appointed Senior Advisor in the newly established body of
advisors at Logos. Mr. Laroche is the Vice-President European External Affairs at Uni-
lever HPCE, a company where he has been for the past thirty-three years. In addition, Mr.
Laroche is the President of the International Soaps, Detergents and Maintenance Prod-
ucts Industry Association, and a board member of the European Cosmetic Toiletry and
Perfumery Association. He is also a founder of the European Partnership for Alternative
Approaches to animal testing.
