New Director of fundamental rights and citizenship<br />

Aurel-Viorel Ciobanu-Dordea has been appointed Director for fundamental rights and citi-<br />

zenship in the <strong>European</strong> Commission’s Directorate-General for Justice, Freedom and Security.<br />

Ciobanu-Dordea was chief negotiator for Romania’s accession to the <strong>European</strong> Union be-<br />

tween December 1999 and January 2001, and was ranked as State Secretary within the Min-<br />

istry for Foreign Affairs of Romania. He studied law and has a Ph.D. from the University of<br />

Bucharest.<br />

Cygan the new Director of immigration and asylum<br />

Marta Cygan has been appointed Director for immigration and asylum in the <strong>European</strong> Com-<br />

mission’s Directorate-General for Justice, Freedom and Security. She will take up the position<br />

on 16 July. Cygan is currently Deputy Head of Cabinet in the private office of Danuta Hübner,<br />

the <strong>European</strong> Commissioner for Regional Policy.<br />

Maive Rute moves from DG ENTR to DG ETD<br />

Maive Rute has been appointed Director for biotechnologies, agriculture and food in the Eu-<br />

ropean Commission’s Directorate-General for research. She will begin in the position on 1 July.<br />

Rute, an Estonian, is currently Director for small and medium-sized businesses in the Commis-<br />

sion’s Directorate-General for Enterprise and Industry. Her portfolio includes subjects such as<br />

the Small Business Act for Europe, the Enterprise Europe Network, entrepreneurship educa-<br />

tion and promotion of entrepreneurship, the ERASMUS mobility scheme for entrepreneurs,<br />

crafts and social economy enterprises. An economist by training, she has a Master of Business<br />

Administration from Donau – Universitat Krems, Austria.<br />

New Vice Director General at CECED<br />

Paolo Falcioni has been appointed Vice Director General of CECED, the <strong>European</strong> Committee<br />

of Domestic Appliance Manufacturers. Falcioni brings almost 20 years of experience with na-<br />

tional and international technical and policy-making bodies in the industrial sector to this<br />

newly created position. Prior to joining CECED, he was the <strong>European</strong> Affairs Manager for In-<br />

desit Company. Falcioni has an Electric Engineering degree (summa cum laude) from the Uni-<br />

versity of Ancona (Italy).<br />

Gerus as ETNO’s Regulatory Affairs Manager<br />

Victoria Gerus has been appointed Regulatory Affairs Manager of ETNO, the <strong>European</strong> Tel-<br />

ecommunications Network Operators’ Association. Gerus was the former Head of Regulatory<br />

Strategy for ETNO member company eircom of Ireland. In this function, she closely monitored<br />

and analysed national and EU regulatory developments and formulated eircom’s strategic<br />

response. She also participated in ETNO working groups and as an Executive Board alternate.<br />

In addition, Gerus worked for nine years as a telecoms specialist at the consultancy McKinsey<br />

& Company and also served as a senior analyst at Ovum. She holds a Master’s degree from<br />

Harvard University in the US.<br />

Hammarström heads Diplomat PR’s Brussels office<br />

Susanne Hammarström is to head Swedish Communication Firm Diplomat PR’s newly-<br />

opened Brussels office. Diplomat PR Brussels opened on 1 <strong>May</strong> 20<strong>09</strong> and provides public<br />

affairs and communications services to mainly Swedish companies and organisations. Ham-<br />

marström has 10 years’ experience of <strong>European</strong> public affairs in Brussels, from communica-<br />

tions consultancies APCO Europe and The Centre, as well as from the <strong>European</strong> Commission.<br />

LERU appoints new Secretary General<br />

The League of <strong>European</strong> Research Universities (LERU) has appointed Professor Kurt Deket-<br />

elaere as its new Secretary General. He will take over from Dr. David Livesey, who will retire<br />

after four years in the role. Deketelaere will serve a renewable five-year term. In his capacity<br />

as Secretary General, he plans to emphasise the need to maintain or increase the volume,<br />

effectiveness and efficiency of public and private investment in research and development<br />

(R&D) and in innovation. Deketelaere is full Professor of Environmental and Energy Law at the<br />

K.U.Leuven and Honorary Professor of Climate Change Law at the University of Dundee.<br />

Juan Álvarez-Vijande elected Chairman of ecoDa<br />

The board of the <strong>European</strong> Confederation of Directors’ Associations (ecoDa), has elected its<br />

new Chairman, Juan Álvarez-Vijande (Executive Director and cofounder of the Spanish Insti-<br />

tuto de Consejeros – Administradores), for the two coming years. Álvarez-Vijande has more<br />

than 18 years of experience in boardroom management as Non-Executive Director (among<br />

others as Independent Director), as Executive Director, advisor to Boards on Good Corporate<br />

Governance Practices as well as Advisory Board member.
