Palazzo Rubens
De Meester als architect

Het Rubenshuis toont voor de eerste keer Rubens zijn werk als architect
aan het grote publiek. Rubens was een echte architectuurkenner. Dat ziet
u op heel wat van zijn schilderijen. Maar Rubens was ook betrokken bij
spraakmakende Antwerpse bouwprojecten. Het meest bekende is zijn
eigen woonhuis, het Rubenshuis! In 1610 kocht Rubens het huis met
extra grond op de Wapper nabij de Meir, de sjiekste straat van de stad.
Het werd naar zijn ontwerp grondig verbouwd en uitgebreid met een
barokke portiek, een schildersatelier en een tuinpaviljoen. De portiek is
tot op vandaag één van de pronkstukken van het museum! In het nieuwe
ontwerp toont Rubens zijn artistieke idealen: de klassieke oudheid en de
Italiaanse kunst. Het verbouwde huis was een absolute
bezienswaardigheid in Antwerpen en Rubens' ingrepen verleenden het de
uitstraling van een echt palazzo. Naast werken van Michelangelo, Giulio
Romano, Van Dyck en Jordaens presenteert het Rubenshuis ook kostbare
architectuurboeken uit Rubens' bibliotheek en schilderijen van de
meester zelf.

Een historische wandeling door Gent als een imaginair museum.
Gent is een stad met een lange en tot de verbeelding sprekende
geschiedenis. De stad is ontstaan uit Keltische nederzettingen aan de
samenloop van Leie en Schelde. Ze ontwikkelde zich tijdens de
middeleeuwen tot de grootste stad van de Lage Landen. Dankzij de

slaap en droom liet inspireren. Naar de filosofie van het Kasteel van
Gaasbeek treden de werken van grote namen en aanstormende talenten
in dialoog met de romantische kasteelinterieurs. We ontmoeten slapende
figuren en poëtische dagdromers, maar ook mysterieuze schimmen en
beklemmende nachtmerries.
Bezoekers worden ondergedompeld in een onwerkelijke sfeer,
geïnspireerd door het blauwe uur. Je komt terecht in een intermediaire
wereld, die zweeft tussen dag en nacht, tussen waak en slaap. Parallel
hiermee wordt in een aantal kasteelzalen een historisch slaaptafereel
geplaatst dat van op een strategische plaats de actuele expo
becommentarieert en countert. Zo ontstaat een tweede rode draad die
als een residu uit het verleden, als 'verborgen verleider' ook, naast de
hoofdverhaallijn loopt.

Flemish 17th Century Lacquers

Seventeenth century Flanders was a cultural hotspot for both the fine
and decorative arts. With well established ports in Bruges, Antwerp and
Ghent, it became an important transit region, both for the export of local
produce and the import of highly ornamental luxury products and
valuables, such as lacquer boxes and ornamental lacquer cabinets
imported from the Orient. These oriental high-gloss items, richly inlaid
with wood and intricate mother of pearl motives, were built to stand the
test of time. As the demand for these luxury items increased, Flemish
craftsmen mastered the skills and techniques and created their own
lacquer tradition. They didn't merely imitate Oriental lacquer decoration,
but designed a peculiarly Flemish lacquer style that has long been
overlooked in art history, outshined by the English and French lacquer art
from the Chinoiserie era.
No research had been carried out so far on lacquer furniture in Flanders.
Many years of interest in lacquer art encouraged author Wilfried De Kesel
to investigate the subject. This is the first comprehensive book on 17th
century Flemish lacquers and an in-depth study to help preserve the skill
and the survival of this part of Flemish cultural heritage.

bk SM wil regelmatig focussen op soms te weinig belichte kunstenaars
die van grote invloed waren op jongere generaties. De Nederlandse
kunstenaar Jan Dibbets (°1941) is één van de meest invloedrijke
kunstenaars die op het einde van de jaren zestig de Europese
bruggenbouwer was met de conceptuele kunst in Amerika. Zijn vroege
werk met gras, neon en later zijn fameuze 'perspectiefcorrecties' leidde
tot conceptuele vraagstellingen over hoe wij naar de wereld kijken. Jan
Dibbets gebruikt de fotografie die hij manipuleert en als medium om de
tuin leidt om kunst te maken waarin het esthetische in dialoog treedt
met wiskunde, wetenschap en later met monochrome schilderkunst. In
nauw overleg met met Jan Dibbets en Rudi Fuchs (directeur Documenta
1982) wordt dit magistrale oeuvre aan een breed publiek ontsloten. Een
lijvig bk SM-cahier zal dit unieke project begeleiden.

De schilder Joris Ghekiere (Kortrijk, °1955) zet al jaren een eigenzinnige
en zelfbewuste koers uit. Joris Ghekiere schildert een figuratieve
abstractie en/of een abstracte figuratie, creëert monumentale
muurschilderingen, realiseert geometrische structuren in wit polystyreen.
De kunstenaar loopt als een strandjutter over zanderige verlaten plekken
en maakt er zandcirkels en hij filmt zijn dorp vanuit een roterende kano
binnen strak determinerende coördinaten. Aan de basis van zijn werk
liggen geen hoogdravende concepten of statements. De schilder kiest zijn
motieven erg zorgvuldig en overdacht: planten, haartooien,
volksdansers, woekeringen, landschappen, ... Joris Ghekiere gebruikt
dikwijls fotografie om zich het onderwerp toe te eigenen en ook om een

Deze publicatie is opgevat als een kunstenaarsboek waarbij de link wordt
gelegd tussen schilderijen, tekeningen, videowerk en installaties van de
kunstenares.
Het kunstenaarsboek "Herbarium" over Virginie Bailly's oeuvre laat zich
het beste benaderen als een wandeling doorheen haar multidisciplinair
werk, geritmeerd via vijf kernbegrippen: point de vue, luminositeit,
gestualiteit, directheid en structuur. Vijf hoofdlijnen, gesymboliseerd
door vijf sleutelwerken, leiden de lezer door het overzicht van Bailly's
beeldend werk met dwarsverbindingen langs kleinere paden en wegen.
In het boek is er geen verschil gemaakt tussen haar videowerk,
installaties, teken- en schilderkunst. Allen stammen uit dezelfde wortel,
gevoed en gericht door observatie van optische verschijnselen,
waargenomen door de kunstenares in haar verhouding met het
landschap. Deze gevisualiseerde grondgedachte wordt ondersteund door
begeleidende teksten: "Het interpreterende facetoog" [Filip Luyckx] en
"Het uitdagende landschap" [Frank Maes].
Tijdens deze presentatie zal Frank Maes de thematiek van het landschap
verder uitdiepen in relatie tot het oeuvre van Virginie Bailly. Maes
(°1972, woont in Gent) is kunsthistoricus. Hij werkte tien jaar als curator
in het S.MA.K. en als redacteur van het tijdschrift Janus. In 2009
realiseerde hij samen met Steven Jacobs de tentoonstelling 'Beyond the
Picturesque', omtrent de hedendaagse relevantie van de pittoreske
esthetica. Momenteel is hij actief als freelance publicist en curator, en als
docent. Hij publiceert over beeldende kunst en architectuur.

omzwerving, een zoektocht. Het hoofdpersonage is ridder Jacques
Brassinne de la Buissière, een voormalige hoge functionaris en
hoofdrolspeler in de politiek-humanitaire thriller die de dekolonisatie was.
Hij treedt op als gids en symboolfiguur en laat zijn thesissen, die hij
gedurende 30 jaar ontwikkelde over de ware toedracht van de feiten, aan
bod komen tijdens de ontmoetingen en herdenkingen met de laatste
overlevende betrokkenen en familieleden van de hoofdrolspelers. Naast
de film worden ook nog andere werken getoond die tijdens Augustijnens'
zoektocht ontstaan zijn, waaronder publicaties, foto's, sculpturen,

restaurants sont différents les uns des autres : certains sont étoilés

sont tenus pas de très jeunes chefs (Jaloa, La Buvette), d'autres pas de
plus anciens (Notos - Chou). Il y a du Belge, du Français, de l'Italien, du
Grec, etc.. Il y a des hommes et des filles (Les Filles). Dans certains cas,

La particularité du livre est que chaque chef est présenté par des
habitués photographié par Cici Olsson. Le livre donne ainsi la parole à
certaines célébrités - Toots Thielemans, José Van Dam, Elvis Pompilio,
François Schuiten etc.., mais surtout a beaucoup de gourmands
appréciant bien manger. En partant de leurs impressions, René Sépul
rédige un portrait du chef, et nous présentons des recettes les mieux
adaptées à son style.

Émilie Danchin pratique le portrait et, au détour d'« entretiens
photographiques», cherche à matérialiser l'inconscient. « J'ai songé à ces
endroits où l'on tend, sans vraiment savoir pourquoi, à se perdre dans
nos pensées. On ne s'y oublie pas pour autant, bien au contraire, car si
l'on semble s'y perdre, on y est solidement ancré. » Partant de
thématiques introspectives comme hypothèse de travail, Emilie Danchin
présente des séries de portraits où les modèles semblent aux prises avec
eux-mêmes sans s'en rendre compte. « Au fur et à mesure de la
découverte des images, ce qui me frappe, dit-elle, c'est l'apparition de
postures. Les modèles oscillent entre une rigidité et une spontanéité
particulières. Ils nous racontent quelque chose qui les regarde mais qui
leur échappe.»
Attentive aux espaces d'ouverture, aux moments d'abandon, Émilie
Danchin mise sur l'échange photographique pour enrichir un rapport au
monde. La dimension à la fois frontale et inconsciente du travail ouvre à
des légers décalages, à des confrontations qui, sans avoir jamais rien de
spectaculaire, nous tirent du côté de l'étrange, du rêve éveillé, d'un
questionnement sur ce qu'approcher le visage de l'autre peut dire.
Française d'origine, Émilie Danchin vit à Bruxelles depuis 1988.
Philosophe de formation et photographe, elle articule son travail autour
des mécanismes de la psyché. Également formée à l'analyse jungienne et
à l'hypnose ericksonienne, elle a développé un cadre thérapeutique
expérimental proche de l'artthérapie, qui inclut la photographie
(s'appuyant sur le fait que l'inconscient se manifeste, entre autres, par
des images). Ses photographies sont majoritairement en noir et banc,
associées à du texte ou du son. Elle expose régulièrement depuis 2004.
Elle publie son premier livre chez Yellow Now (série Angles vifs), préfacé
par Jacques Sojcher et agrémenté d'un entretien avec Emmanuel
d'Autreppe,à l'occasion d'une exposition à la Maison Pelgrims à Bruxelles.

post-war Riviera's most memorable moments.

Flemish Painters from the Hermitage
This book gives an excellent overview of Flemish art from the Hermitage
in St Petersburg: 75 paintings and 40 drawings, including numerous
masterpieces of the Antwerp School. A large proportion was acquired in
the 18th century by Catherine the Great, from superb collections such as
those of Crozat and Brühl, which she bought up in their entirety. Many of
these paintings originally hung in churches and monasteries in Antwerp
and other European cities.
Most attention focuses on the 'big three': Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony
van Dyck and Jacob Jordaens. Rubens was the most important, the most
talented, and the most influential 17th-century Flemish painter. He was
also a phenomenon in his day, a true homo universalis. The portraits
produced by Van Dyck for the court of King Charles I of England also
share the limelight, along with impressive history paintings by Jordaens,
exuding the vibrant atmosphere in which he excelled. Other masters in
this overview include Frans Snijders, with a number of surprisingly
dynamic still lifes, and David Teniers the Younger, with numerous

Op Art

Op Art (short for Optical Art) was a prominent art movement of the
1960s that found its expression primarily in painting. Artists used
contrasting colours and geometric shapes, that repeated in specific
compositions, to produce patterns that seemed to visually interact and
be in motion. Starting in the mid-1960s, many fashion designers began
incorporating the visual language of Op Art into prints and woven fabrics.
This can be seen in the use of simple, bold designs and in intricate
combinations of colours and patterns that made garments seem to move
by themselves. Often only black and white were used, but as this book
shows, many other colour combinations were possible.

birthday, Gerhard Richter: Panorama is a major chronological
retrospective that groups together significant moments of this
remarkable painter's career. It includes portraits based on photographs
such as the famous Betty 1988, abstractions, subtle landscapes, colour
charts, works on paper, mirrors and three important glass constructions.
Gerhard Richter was one of the first German artists to reflect on the
history of National Socialism, creating paintings of family members who
had been members, as well as victims of, the Nazis, as well as canvases
reminiscent of images of the bombing of Dresden. In 1988 he produced
the 15-part work October 18 1977, a sequence of black and white
paintings based on images of the Baader Meinhof group. Richter has
continued to respond to significant moments in history; the final room of
the exhibition includes September 2005, a painting of the terrorist
attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York in 2001.
Alongside works responding to historical events, the show presents many
of Richter's most ambitious abstract paintings from his 1974 colour chart
containing 4096 different coloured squares, to his 20-metre long Stroke
of 1980, presented for the first time outside Germany, to the magisterial
and richly coloured Forest squeegee paintings of 1990, and culminating
in the hauntingly beautiful six-part series Cage from 2006 on long loan to
Tate.
Gerhard Richter: Panorama is curated by Tate Director Nicholas Serota
and Mark Godfrey.

separatists to discount the merit of a national government that is no
longer needed to defend the country militarily and economically.
Samuel Humes lived in Belgium from 1984 till 2008, where he was
most recently director of Boston University's Brussels campus. He is a
graduate of Williams College (BA), the University of Pennsylvania (MGA),
and Leiden University (Drs and PhD). His latest book is Managing the
Multinational: Confronting the Global-Local Dilemma; earlier publications
include The Structure of Local Government Throughout the World which
has been described as a seminal work in its field.

Searching for a new light as a means for communicating with the
viewers. "La Biennale is one of the world's most important forums for the
dissemination and illumination of the current developments in
international art.", states Curiger of her exhibition. "The title chosen,
ILLUMInations, literally draws attention to the importance of such
developments in a globalized world. I am particularly interested in the
eagerness of many contemporary artists to establish an intense dialogue
with the viewer, and to challenge the conventions through which
contemporary art is viewed."
The work of Venetian Renaissance painter Tintoretto will play a
prominent role in ILLUMInations. Many contemporary artists claim to be
searching for the same light that animates some of Tintoretto's later
works. Tintoretto's presence will thus establish an artistic, historical, and
emotional relationship with the local context.

A look into Richard Prince's private library and his influences, published
on the occasion of an exhibition of the artist's work at the Bibliotheque
nationale de France, Paris. Artist Richard Prince is renowned for
appropriating icons that capture the American cultural zeitgeist, such as
Marlboro cowboys, femme-fatale nurses, and muscle cars. Prince is also
a bibliophile, collecting rare volumes published from 1949 to 1984 which
include Naked Lunch, Jack Kerouac's rolled manuscript for Big Sur, and
editions of Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita in several languages. An exhibition
at the Bibliotheque nationale de France, Paris, presents rare books
selected by the artist from its collection alongside Prince's artwork.
Richard Prince: American Prayer is an accompanying volume that offers a
rare glimpse into Prince's intellectual explorations, revealing the source
material for many of his well-known series through the pairing of literary
excerpts and complementary illustrations of artwork.

Faberge Revealed

The exquisite objects created by goldsmith and jeweler Peter Carl
Fabergé and his studio in the late 19th and early 20th centuries for the
aristocracy and nobility of imperial Russia are considered to be some of
the most refined examples of the jeweler's art of any age. Of greatest
fascination are the extraordinary Easter eggs created as special
commissions for the Russian imperial family and other notable patrons -
works that remain unparalleled in their ingenuity of construction and
sheer beauty.
Accompanying a major exhibition Faberge Revealed represents a
landmark for the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and for Fabergé
scholarship. The essays by Géza von Habsburg and other scholars
present new findings on Fabergé, his workshops, and the creation of
these extraordinary objects. For the first time all items by or attributed
to Fabergé in VMFA's collection are documented along with the museum's
significant holdings of other Russian decorative arts. Also included is a
section on forgeries that bravely confronts this vexing question. Every
object has been splendidly re-photographed for this book - and the
detailed photography alone should provide inestimable value for future
Fabergé scholarship.
Richly illustrated with some 600 photographs, the volume documents an
important collection bequeathed in 1947 to the Virginia Museum of Fine
Arts by Lillian Thomas Pratt, of Fredericksburg, Va., the wife of General
Motors executive John Lee Pratt. Her collection, assembled between 1933
and 1946, comprised several hundred creations by the Faberge
workshops and by other Russian imperial jewelers. These exquisite,
marvelously crafted objects, range from the majestic jeweled imperial
eggs to delicate jeweled flowers in vases to diamond-encrusted icons and
tiaras, to animal figures nimbly carved from precious stone.
