Koh Samui Overview THE SAILING AREA
Sunsail are now offering flotillas and bareboat in Thailand from their new base in the Gulf of Thailand, on the
island of Koh Samui. Located 80 Kms off the coast of Suratthani and about 560 Kms south of Bangkok. Koh
Samui offers a unique style and supported with its own airport, Samui is rapidly becoming one of Thailand’s
most popular destinations. Due to its unique location, Koh Samui and its surrounding islands, offers fine and dry
weather in the European Summer Season of May - September. Flotillas start on the 14 th May 2006 and run every
other Sunday until 16 th September 2006. Bareboats can be chartered any day for any duration between 14 th May
and 16 th September 2006.
Located in the Gulf of Thailand 80 Kms off the coast of Surat Thani and about 560 Kms south of Bangkok, is
the magical island of Koh Samui, close to the Angthong National Marine Park.

Inexpensive living
The island, Thailand's third largest and measuring 21 kilometers at its widest point and 25 kilometers in
maximum length, is one of a group of 80 tropical islands, most of them are deserted. A mountain ridge runs east
to west and most of the inner-land comprises forested hills. The rich hues of wild vegetation are dappled
throughout with the contrasting greens of coconut palms and emerald paddy fields.
Koh Samui has a local population of a mere 34,000.
The local population consisting mainly of Buddhist Thais is very friendly. Until the recent arrival of tourism,
coconut farming and fishing were the main sources of income. The latter are still practiced though to a lesser
extent. The fish you’ll eat in the many restaurants and hotel dining rooms comes from the surrounding Gulf of
Thailand’ waters.
The largest and most popular beaches on Samui are Chaweng, Lamai, Bophut and Maenam.
Away from the beaches there is still so much to see and do. Go diving or snorkelling at the nearby Anthong
National Marine Park, take an elephant trek to a breathtaking waterfall, visit bustling local markets and sleepy
fishing villages where time seems to stand still and there’s plenty of Buddhist temples to visit.
Ever more popular Samui now boasts a number of international class Spas to pamper you, a PGA accredited golf
course, the annual Samui sailing Regatta, and a plethora of fine restaurants.

The Sunsail office is located next door to the lodge hotel. Yachts are at anchor off the Fishermans Village in
Bo Phut Bay. Locally, there are shops, a bakery, bars and restaurants and a hotel/bungalows for those wishing
to spend a night ashore before and after their charter.
Please can clients contact the base manager Phill Bedford on 07 894 1872 once arrived on Samui.
Bo Phut Bay on the North Coast of Koh Samui is located about 10 mins from the airport (see base map above).
The yachts are usually in front of "The Lodge" Hotel/Restaurant in Fisherman’s Village, Bo Phut. However, may
be moved if weather conditions dictate.
Base Facilities
Shower and Changing facilities are available for Sunsail Clients at the Lodge Hotel Bo Phut at a charge of 200
Baht per yacht. There are limited storage facilities available ashore.

Yachts are at anchor and there are no tidal restrictions.

Sunsail offer flotilla and bareboat sailing using 4 x SunOdyssey 35’s (3 Cabin), 1 x SunOdyssey 40 (3 Cabin)
1 x SunOdyssey 45 (3-4 Cabin) and a Lagoon 410 (4 Cabin) catamaran.
Turnaround Days & Embark/Disembark & Briefings
Charters commence at 1800 hrs on the first day and finish at 09.00 hrs on the last day.
Flotilla duration is 10 days starting on Sundays, finishing Wednesday mornings. Clients have the option of
extending their vacation with up to 3 days extra “Free Sailing” at the end of the flotilla.
Bareboats can start and finish on any day for any duration, starting at 1800 hrs and ending at 0900 hrs.
Base Open Hours
For 2006 we have an office in Fisherman’s Village – office open hours 0800 hrs to 1800 hrs.
Arrival Procedures
If clients have pre-booked transfers from the airport. They will be met and transferred to the yachts.
If clients are arriving early or staying on Koh Samui prior to their charter , please contact the Base Manager
to discuss early boarding.
If clients have not pre-arranged transfers please advise them to contact Morgan on 07 894 1872 (Local
Number) to arrange a meeting time.
Transfer times from the airport are approximately 10 mins. – Transfer costs approx 800 Baht for a mini bus.

There is a charge of 200 Baht per person per day when entering Thailand's national parks.
Airport & Taxes
Bangkok’s Don Muang Airport is Thailand’s principal airport, which is situated 20 miles outside of the city
centre. The majority of flights entering or departing Thailand do so from Bangkok, which receives and sends
flights to major airports all around the world. Bangkok Airways provides flights from Bangkok to Koh Samui.
There are also flights into Koh Samui from Singapore, Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur. From Don Muang
Airport, clients should make their way to the Domestic Terminal (by courtesy bus) to catch a domestic flight to
Koh Samui.
Reconfirmation of all flights
It is no longer necessary that clients reconfirm Internal and
International flights on most airlines 72 hours before departure.
Reconfirmation can be done from the airports, from any large hotel
and from the Sunsail base. There is usually a small charge of 50 Baht
per ticket (International). There is no need for clients to reconfirm
Thai Airways or Malaysian Airlines domestic and international flights.

Please note: Clients are not able to pre-book a Tuk Tuk. This is a service where you have to flag one down
on the side of the street. This can involve a long walk and wait outside the airport.
Shore Facilities
Bo Phut has a selection of restaurants and bungalow/hotels. The main shopping area would be Chewang Beach
which is a 10 min taxi ride from the yachts. Here there is a TESCO supermarket, bakeries, BOOTS chemist
and all major brand shops as well as a local fresh market.
There are large banks and ATM exchange machines on Koh Samui. There is an ATM machine situated in Bo
Phut.. Money can also be changed at beach resorts on Koh Phangan and Koh Tao.
If clients are staying in another part of the island, we ask that they contact the base on arrival to confirm
meeting and departure times for their charter.

Room rates for the Koh Samui are on request. Accommodation is available in fan or full air-conditioning
rooms/bungalows .. Payment is made locally to the Sunsail Thailand office and bookings should be made
with the Sunsail Thailand office to obtain special rates. We suggest bookings are made well in advance as
this is a very busy resort and is part of the marina complex.

Water
Generally, water is not easily accessible throughout the cruising area and can only be obtained by carrying
canisters on to the boat. Only bottled water should be used for drinking. When provisioning clients should
allow 2-3 litres per person per day.
Provisioning
It is usual for charterers to eat on board for the first 2-3 nights, although restaurants are available at most
recommended anchorages. The Ang Thong National Park area has little in the way of restaurants and shops.
Pre-Booked Provisions WILL be available in Samui for 2006.
Ice, Charcoal and drinking water can be ordered on arrival.
Koh Samui has a Tesco Lotus and several local markets and supermarkets at bigger beaches.
While restaurants are available as shown in the Itineraries, We suggest that you allow for eating most
breakfasts and lunches onboard.
In summary, we offer clients the following advice for their provisioning:

Shopping for souvenirs is best done on Koh Tao or Koh Samui

There is a wide selection of restaurants around Samui. Koh Phangan and Koh Tao have more local type Thai
Restaurants.

This can be extremely good value. If you eat at a local food stall you can get a meal for less than £1 per
person. Even eating in restaurants you generally pay less than £2 per course for delicious Thai food. Alcohol
is generally more expensive than food. A small bottle of beer is about £1 and a decent wine about £10. Thai
food is all cooked to order using fresh ingredients and lots of chilli. It is quite easy to ask for the meal to be
made a little less spicy for western tastes. Seafood features on every menu with chicken, pork and beef also
available as well as great vegetarian food. Rice and noodles are also main staples but more western food is
also easily available.
Diving
The diving in Thailand is fantastic. The dive centres are very strict and safety conscious, clients must carry a
PADI or equivalent qualification to be able to dive. Unqualified divers can do courses or resort dives. Prices
range from centre to centre but it usually costs between 1500 Baht (£22) and 2500 Baht (£36) per person for two
dives and lunch. If a client wishes to dive whilst chartering with Sunsail we recommend Ko Tao where there are
good Dive centres
Sharks
There are sharks around but most of them have no teeth! Leopard sharks (overgrown dog fish) and whale sharks
(very big plankton eaters) may be seen. They are not a threat to sailors or swimmers but an encounter with a whale
shark is an experience that will stay with you for the rest of your life.
Currency
The unit of currency in Thailand is the Baht. Thai Baht is available at the airport and in most medium sized
towns.
We recommend that sufficient money is changed before departing into the cruising area (airport is easiest). Money
can changed at the Base and there is a bank and ATM machines on-site. You can exchange money at resorts on
islands, although the exchange rates may not be so good.
Passports & Visas
Clients must ensure that their passport is valid for up to six months beyond their stay. Visas are generally not
required if staying for less than 30 days and can be applied for on arrival, otherwise Visas can be obtained form
the Thai Consulate in the country of origin. For the UK, clients should apply, enclosing a stamped addressed
envelope, to the Visa Dept., Royal Embassy, 29-30 Queen’s Gate, London, SW7 5JB. For non-British passport
holders, suggest contacting the local consulate for advice on visa & passport requirements.
Health
For up-to-date authoritative advice on health protection and vaccinations, we recommend that clients consult their
family doctor.
Pirates
The main problem area with pirates is the South China sea. Piracy around Thailand is very rare and they are only
interested in Cargo ships and not charter yachts. It is quite safe to leave the yachts and the dinghies.

Our cruising area in the Gulf of Thailand encompasses Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and the Ang Thon
Archipelago. The islands lie in a shallow part of the gulf 15 miles off the eastern coast of the southern
peninsular.
Stretching about 20 miles north to south and covering an area of 250 square kilometres (96.5 square miles),
the 40 or so islands of the Ang Thon Archipelago have been declared a marine National park. One island has
a mysterious sink hole, completely enclosed by walls of rock, in its centre.
Koh Tao, the English translation meaning Turtle Island, 35 miles north-northwest of Koh Samui has the
clearest and best diving in the gulf.

There are some mooring buoys available but they are not reliably maintained so overnight stops must be at
anchor.

Thailand”, and a cruising guide written by the base manager and local Sunsail skippers. This comprehensive
