More Than Eight Decades of History in Torrance The General Petroleum Corporation refinery was created amid acres of fields in 1929, only nine years after the City of Torrance was incorporated. This facility was built in response to a vision of fueling ships in the Los Angeles Harbor with crude oil discovered from California’s San Joaquin Valley. Pipelines soon followed, and during the Great Depression, the refinery processed as much as 30,000 barrels of crude oil daily. Today, the Torrance Refinery covers nearly 750 acres and produces nearly 1.8 billion gallons of gasoline annually. More than 70 percent of each barrel is refined into high-quality, specially formulated, low-emissions gasoline – considered to be the cleanest burning gasoline in the world – keeping California and the West on the move.
Our Refinery The Torrance Refinery’s primary role – and most important benefit to its community – is to safely provide reliable and affordable energy supplies to Southern California in an economically, environmentally and socially responsible manner. As one of seven ExxonMobil refineries in the United States, the refinery has 21 major processing units that refine nearly 10 percent of the gasoline supplied to California. To maintain safe and reliable operations, the refinery has expanded over the years to include: • Gasoline blending units • A tank and liquid petroleum gas storage area • A testing and product quality laboratory • A water treatment unit • A selenium recovery unit • An electrostatic precipitator
