Products and Output
The refinery’s crude oil supply still comes primarily from the
San Joaquin Valley. ExxonMobil’s M-70 pipeline, one of the
country’s most advanced pipelines, carries some of the
heaviest crude oil in the world from Central California to the
refinery. The refinery produces a wide variety of products,
including:
• Various grades of gasoline
• Aviation fuel
• Diesel fuel
• Liquefied petroleum gas
• Petroleum coke
• Clarified slurry oil
Most of the gasoline and fuel produced is sold in Southern
California, Nevada and Arizona and transported via tanker
trucks and pipelines. Liquefied petroleum gas, sulfur and
petroleum coke are primarily transported to customers by
tanker trucks and railcar.
Our Dedicated Work Force
Although our units and product output certainly set us apart
from the competition, at the heart of the Torrance
Refinery are the highly skilled women and men
responsible for operating the facility around the
clock, 365 days a year. Furthermore, as a
refinery situated in the midst of a bustling
and vibrant city, it is essential that we
continue to operate in a safe and
reliable manner.
We consider ourselves an integral
part of Torrance and work hard every
day to ensure that our operations
have minimal impact on our neighbors
and the surrounding community. It is
through the dedication and commitment
of more than 700 employees, and the
hard work of hundreds of contractors, that
we achieve this goal.
Safety and Security
The Torrance Refinery is committed to conducting business in
a manner that safeguards its work force and the community.
We have a simple goal when it comes to safety: “Nobody
gets hurt.”
This culture of working toward an incident-free workplace
means that personnel must take a proactive, disciplined and
systematic approach to safety. A commitment to safety rests
on a foundation of both prevention and preparedness.
A key component of prevention is maintaining our equipment.
We perform regular maintenance daily at the refinery and
conduct maintenance activities called “turnarounds” on a
periodic schedule. During these maintenance activities, our
personnel make improvements to refinery operations and
check systems to ensure that they are running properly.
The refinery’s commitment to preparedness is upheld through
rigorous ongoing training. The refinery maintains its own fully
equipped fire department, which regularly trains with the
Torrance Fire Department. The refinery fire brigade comprises
four primary specialties: firefighters, rescue specialists,
emergency medical technicians, and hazardous materials
technicians and specialists.
Security measures related to protecting the
Torrance Refinery’s personnel, facilities
and operations are critical to ensure
that we can continue to operate
safely. Sound physical security is
a cornerstone of our security
program. A sustained
relationship with local, state
and federal agencies, as
well as the use of advanced
surveillance devices and
security techniques,
prevents unauthorized
access to our facility. At
ExxonMobil, security is
everybody’s business.
Environment
The Torrance Refinery
strives to conduct
its business in an
environmentally
responsible manner.
From our operators
and engineers to our
management, every
employee at the ExxonMobil
Torrance Refinery is committed to
steadily improving our environmental
performance, with the goal of driving
incidents with real environmental impact to zero.
Throughout the years, we have invested hundreds of millions
of dollars in refinery upgrades to decrease refinery emissions
while increasing process reliability.
Although every element of the environment is important
to us, we concentrate our efforts on air, water and wasteminimization
programs. Our employees address environmental
issues by ensuring that we adhere to hundreds of federal,
state and local environmental requirements and by looking for
ways to reduce pollution beyond standards set by regulation.
Community Outreach
The Torrance Refinery is committed to being a responsible
member of the Torrance community by creating opportunities
to build mutual understanding and respect through open,
forthright dialogue, personal involvement, and strategic
community investments. These investments enable us to
contribute millions of dollars to the Torrance and South Bay
economies through the purchase of local goods and services
The refinery supports a range of programs and activities that
make a positive contribution to the communities where our
employees live and work. We encourage our employees and
management representatives to build relationships and perform
community service. Our goal is to support the local community
as a good corporate citizen.
For ExxonMobil, supporting
education in the communities
we operate, especially in the
areas of math and science, is
an important business priority.
Based on the company’s
strategic focus and local
community feedback, a significant
portion of the Torrance Refinery’s
contributions program supports the
efforts of the Torrance Unified School
District, including programs such as
the Pegasus Awards classroom grants,
the Green Team Summer Youth Employment
Program, and Introduce a Girl to Engineering
activities with Torrance middle-school girls.
We believe that community investment goes beyond financial
support. We encourage employees, retirees and their families
to contribute their own time to pursue civic activities in both
Torrance and their own resident communities. By contributing
to organizations supported by employees and their families,
the company encourages and recognizes their efforts.
Our refinery has an active Workforce Involvement Program that
encourages team volunteer efforts in our local communities.
Through their community service, our employees are able to
earn much-needed grant dollars for local charitable non-profit
organizations from the ExxonMobil Foundation. Through our
cumulative efforts with the ExxonMobil Foundation, the refinery
has contributed a record-breaking contribution to the United
Way of Greater Los Angeles, which awarded the refinery with
the first ever “Model Campaign of the Year” award.
The Torrance Management Involvement Program also
encourages refinery representatives to share their time
and expertise by serving nonprofit, civic and social service
organizations in the interest of good corporate and individual
citizenship. This program provides the refinery with the
greatest opportunity to create a positive and lasting social
impact where we do business. Our leadership representatives
serve on the boards of numerous local nonprofits, such as the
Torrance Education Foundation, Pediatric Therapy Network
and the Madrona Marsh Preserve & Nature Center, to name
a few.
