Faith News
2010

principally
speaking
Dear Parents, Students, Caregivers, Staff,
Old-scholars and Friends,
There is an increasing pressure on schools to deliver
government programs and to establish environments and
curriculum which address issues such as bullying, adolescent
development and cyber challenges. I believe at Faith, we
do our best to provide a broad, challenging and relevant
education in a Christian setting. An environment which
provides engaging opportunities, strengthens character
and offers a powerful alternative to the socially destructive
behaviours which our students are confronted with in their
world. Given the expectations on schools to adapt their
teaching and learning practices in light of the changing needs
of students and society, it was timely this year to reflect on
our current practice and establish our visions for the future.
In February, a consultant was engaged to help the Faith community develop the new Strategic Plan. After much
consultation, our goals were agreed upon and will focus on:
• Middle Years approaches including offering Year 7 on the Faith site,
• Senior School development, taking into account the needs of our students,
the new SACE and the Australian curriculum,
• Staff training and support,
• Enhancing Faith as a worshipping community,
• Strengthening family and community involvement in the school.
Regarding the first of these goals, the Lutheran Schools Association will undertake a study of the future provision
and structure of Lutheran Education in our region, encompassing schools in the Northern suburbs, through to
Gawler and the Barossa Valley. Changes in the education scene and predicted population growth in the region have
contributed to the need for this study. Faith Lutheran School supports this major study as the data will help inform
our aim to establish a Year 7 to 9 Middle School on the Faith campus by 2013 at the earliest.
As we look to future provision of curriculum, staffing and community needs, we must also consider our building
and facilities. In the short term, the school will undertake a major refurbishment of the Music suite and the Physical
Education area and the Master Plan will be developed in 2011.
Our community continues to celebrate our old-scholars and we encourage their ongoing interest and participation
in the life of the school. I ask families to keep the school up to date with the achievements and pursuits of their
children.
I hope this issue of Faith News finds you well and that the stories and experiences within, keep you up to date on
our journey.
awarded
Faith’s Year 10 German students were very
successful in the 2010 German Film Festival
competition. The theme for this year was ‘Greening
the Environment’. Their video was called Super
Hans, a visitor to Faith Lutheran school who would
help save the environment.
The students created the ideas, wrote the script,
brought the props, filmed it at school and edited
it themselves. They were very pleased to hear
it reached the final selection to be shown at
Arndale Cinema Complex in September. During the
afternoon, students watched the early and middle
year entries first, then the senior students were
last on the programme. It was a very nervous group
that heard the names of the 3rd then 2nd places but
then Super Hans was announced as the winner.
The students won a trophy, certificate and $400
which will be used for German resources. Their
video will also be screened at the National Festival
next year. A fantastic effort from these Year 10
students, with thanks to their teacher, Di DePalma.
Mark Lamborn (Year 12) went to Canberra in April to
participate in ‘Outward Bound’, a program inspiring
young Australains to build leadership skills.
Shane Rosenzweig (Year 11) was presented with
a Silver ‘Duke of Edinburgh Award’ at an official
ceremony in Adelaide.
In 2009 Faith launched
its first Pedal Prix
team, ‘Faith Racing
Development’, with
amazing success at
the 24 Hour Australian
International Pedal Prix
held at Murray Bridge. In
2010 a dedicated group
of Year 11 and 12 students will again compete,
thanks in part to community support gained through
sponsorship. We wish our team all the best for this
September event.
what are they
doing now?
Iona Halliday (2000) has
always been passionate
about Athletics. Iona’s
tertiary studies began
with a Certificate IV in
Fitness from Swinburne
(TAFE), Victoria and
in 2008 graduated
from Deakin University,
Melbourne, with a
Bachelor of Applied
Science (in Sports
Coaching). In 2009 Iona
gained a Post Graduate
Scholarship at the
Australian Institute of Sport, Canberra, ACT in the
Physiology Department as a Quality Assurance
Officer. She was offered a position in October of
that same year as a member of the support staff for
the Australian Women’s Skeleton Team competing
in the Winter Olympics. As a support staff member
Iona and the team travelled overseas to compete
in the World Cup series in order for the athletes to
qualify for the Winter Olympics in Whistler, Canada,
in February, 2010. For the World Cup competitions
the team travelled to the USA, Whistler, Canada,
Italy, Germany and Switzerland. Iona had to film,
edit and digitally record performances, their splits
and those of the competing nations and hand
these results to the coaches as well as keeping in
touch with the AIS in Canberra. Another part of her
job was to drive the team to various venues when
necessary. After returning from overseas, in early
2010, Iona is again enjoying working at the AIS. This
time with the Australian Rowing Team, conducting
their performance tests and laboratory reports
amongst many other interesting procedures. Due
to the Federal Government’s new administration for
elite sport, Iona is now waiting to see if her position
becomes more permanent.
Luke Altmann (1997) featured in the Adelaide
Barossa Valley Vintage Festival. She is currently
composing a new Baroque chamber work for its
premiere performance
at a Langmeil Twilight
concert as part of the
2011 Vintage Festival.
Natalie is building an
interntional reputation
in both the US and
Europe. We may see her
at school at the end of
the year to present the
Jan Williams Memorial
Scholarship in Music
to a Senior Faith music
student.
Eleanor Blythman (1998) has taken a role in the
current production of ‘Phantom of the Opera’ in
London. She is very happy to be making her West
End debut in Phantom and thanks her friends and
family for their continued support. Eleanor trained
at the Elder Conservatorium of Music before
gaining a Bachelor of
Music in classical voice
performance (Hons),
followed by a graduate
diploma in singing from the
have been working on the show ‘Jersey Boys’.
The show closed at the end of July, and Philip
