24,000 parents, children and
caregivers each year with a
continuum of evidence-based
programs and services to families.
Programs are designed to provide
families with the tools they need to
raise healthy children and prevent
child abuse and neglect. Programs

working to improve our community
by providing families with proven
solutions to prevent child abuse
and neglect.
We are proud of the impact
we are having on Maryland’s

no new incidents of child abuse
and neglect.
• Parents completing our
parenting education programs
show improvement in all five
areas important to safe and
positive parenting.
• 86% of parents who attended
Parents Anonymous ® support
groups reduce their stress and
learn new coping methods.
• 80% of the high school students
in our Afterschool Program were
promoted to the next grade.
• 100% of the callers to our Local
Resource and Referral Lines
reported that they had increased
confidence and competence in
addressing their future needs of
their children.

Over the past two years, The Family Tree has focused on
setting the stage to create positive change for children. We
have concentrated on how we can most effectively build
strong families and communities to prevent child abuse
before it occurs.
Although, we are one of the nation’s most affluent states,
we have consistently failed to protect, develop and nurture
Maryland’s most valuable resource—our children. With
31,000 reported cases of child abuse and neglect each year
and over 12,000 children in foster care, our mission is
daunting. The Family Tree is unique in its goal to prevent
child abuse; but the solution requires greater resources,
collaborations, and compassion in order to make a
significant impact on communities across the state.
In an effort to turn the tide for Maryland’s families, The Family
Tree retooled itself to reach more families seeking help.
We increased the number of parents and children served
from 14,000 in 2006 to 23,000 in 2008—an increase of
60%! The Family Tree strengthened its reputation by
earning accreditation from the National Exchange Club for
the Prevention of Child Abuse. We are poised to take the
critical steps that will lead to a stronger Maryland.
To do so, Maryland must change its focus and shift from a
treatment-oriented to a prevention-focused state. We need
bold solutions and collaborative plan that draws upon the
interests, skills, and commitment of like-minded leaders in
child wellbeing across the state. This Center of Prevention
will innovate research-driven prevention practices that
shape public policy and deliver effective programs for
families; engage the public through information education
and public awareness; enable professionals and concerned
citizens to speak with one voice; and form alliances with
decision makers capable of implementing meaningful
change in the legal, health and child welfare systems.
We look forward to apprising you of our progress. Our
continued partnership will help us change our approach to
child wellbeing and set the stage for new state and national
standards on model prevention programs.
