Dear Friends,
Thank you for your support of The Family Tree. Each day, we provide Maryland’s
families with the opportunity to start fresh and create their own new beginning.
Every parent who comes to us wants his or her child to live a happy and fulfilled
life. But like most, parents who come to The Family Tree don’t always understand
how difficult parenting can be and how their actions impact their children. This year
thousands of parents enrolled in our classes or home visiting services or attended a
support group or seminar. Each wanted to become a better parent, and afford his or
her child the same opportunity we gave to our children — to grow up in a world with
no limits on their dreams of achievement. Coming to The Family Tree launched their
journey; and established a new beginning.
The journey most parents take is truly transformational. Upon arrival, parents may be angry, scared, or feel alone — living day to
day with little hope for the future, and with a sense of failure as a parent. Additionally, many families also struggle with poverty,
mental health conditions or homelessness — all of which impact their ability to parent safely. With the staff’s knowledgeable
guidance, parents replace harmful and abusive parenting practices with those that are positive and healthy. Slowly, they start
thinking about building a new beginning…and a future.
The Family Tree offers a complement of educational and support services designed to prevent child abuse and neglect and to
give families the ability to raise children who are safe, strong, and healthy. Our strategy is supported by decades of evidence-
based research and best practice models known to improve the outcomes for families and children. Last year, we served over
15,000 parents and children, free of charge, from our headquarters facility located in Baltimore City, our three satellite offices
located in the Greater Baltimore/Washington Area, as well as families’ own homes, various community-based locations, and
through our 24-hour helpline.
Our educational and support programs remain the heart of our work. At the same time, we have embraced a public health model
of prevention and have integrated public policy and research practice into our core operations.

The Family Tree provides more than
15,000 parents, children and caregivers
each year with a continuum of best
practice and evidence-based programs
to families. Programs are designed to
provide families with the child rearing
and communication skills they need
to raise healthy children and prevent
child abuse and neglect. Programs
are available in two service areas —
Family Education and Support, and
Community Services.

YOUTH ADvOCACY PrOGrAM, BALTiMOrE CiTY
We are proud of the impact we are
having on Maryland’s families. Here are
some highlights:
• 84% of families did not experience
subsequent referrals to Child Protective
Services.*
• 94% of caregivers did not experience
a child removal from the home.*
• Parent’s knowledge and attitudes about
child rearing significantly improved after
completing the parenting program.*
• 86% of parents who attended Parents
Anonymous ® support groups reduce
their stress and learn new coping
methods.

Partnerships
At Work
enoUgH aBUse caMPaign
The Family Tree, along with Honorary
Chair First Lady Katie O’Malley and 21
outstanding leaders representing the
private and public sectors, facilitated
a statewide partnership to begin the
enough abuse campaign to end child
sexual abuse in Maryland. This campaign
identified three communities in Baltimore
City, Talbot and Worcester County in
which to pilot an effective child sexual
abuse prevention campaign that began in
Massachusetts. Thus far, we have trained
close to 500 individuals to advance this
effort. Our achievements also include
training staff in seven Juvenile Services’
facilities in the identification and reporting
of child sexual abuse.
YoUTH aDVocacY PrograM
The Family Tree is a partner in the
Maryland Department of Juvenile (DJS)
Services’ Continuum of Opportunity
reentry Program & Services (COrPS)
initiative in Baltimore City, providing a
Youth advocacy Program. The COrPS
initiative began in 2011 with 50 youth
being served, but grew rapidly to
incorporate 140 youth (14 and older)
throughout Baltimore City, all returning
from placements in juvenile facilities
or on probation. The Youth Advocacy
Program staff, in coordination with
DJS Case Managers, provide the youth
with the necessary support to develop
a personal plan for achieving their
education, employment and community
service goals. Advocates help by
cultivating family involvement and
having personal contact with youth
at home, at school, and on the job.

BaLTiMore VisiTaTion cenTer
The Family Tree is the host of the
Baltimore city Visitation center.
The Mayor’s Office on Criminal Justice
received a grant from the Office on
violence Against Women and the
Governor’s Office of Crime Control and
Prevention to start this new center for
non-custodial parents at The Family
Tree’s Sherman Family Center. it will
provide a safe location at which parents
may exchange custody of children (or
non custodial parents may visit children)
in an abuse-free environment that
promotes healthy interaction and serves
as an access point for referring families
to additional supportive services.
HeaLTHY FaMiLies
in 2012, The Family Tree became a
provisional site in Baltimore City for
Healthy Families america (HFa),
one of 20 sites across Maryland and
nearly 400 in the United States. Healthy
WaLK For MarYLanD”s cHiLDren
Families America is a nationally recognized
evidence-based home visiting model
designed for overburdened families
at-risk for adverse childhood experiences,
including child maltreatment. 30 years of
research has demonstrated that moms
and babies participating in regular home
visits are more likely to have healthy
babies and to raise them free of abuse.
sTanD For MarYLanD’s cHiLDren
Our stand For Maryland’s children
public engagement effort is designed
to demonstrate the role we all play in
building strong families. Each year, we
partner with nonprofits, businesses,
schools, community groups, day care
providers, even entire towns — building
pinwheel gardens and distributing
information on strong families. New
supporters include two-time Emmy
Award winning actress Julie Bowen of
the hit Tv show, Modern Family. Look
for more pinwheel gardens around the
state in 2013!
Our 3rd Annual Brent a. rosenberg Walk For Maryland’s children and Family
Fair broke all records in October, 2012 with 100 teams and over 800 walkers.
Thanks to our partners our attendance doubled from 2011 and we were able to
create an event for families unlike any other in Baltimore. This FrEE event is
designed to provide families an opportunity to spend quality time together while
demonstrating their commitment to ending child abuse in Maryland. During the
fair, over 20 child and family serving nonprofit partners provided information and
give-aways. Guests also enjoyed ravens football clinics and special appearances
by Poe and the ravens cheerleaders.

Looking to
the Future
Ten Years in THe sHerMan
FaMiLY cenTer
it’s hard to believe The Family Tree is
celebrating a decade at its headquarters
— The Sherman Family Center — on Charles
Street in Baltimore. Since then, this
incredible building has become known for
restoring hope to thousands of parents
and children each year. Continued support
from local foundations have allowed us
to invest in the needed upgrades to our
building, including some infrastructure
improvements, a child’s bathroom, and
new security and phone systems to better
serve our clients.
cLinicaL researcH TriaL
research is an important component of
our work — guiding our programs and
services. For the past four years, we have
been partnering with the ruth H. Young
Center for Families and Children at the
University of Maryland, to evaluate our
programs. This year, we are wrapping up
our first Clinical Study examining parent
engagement in our parenting education
classes. This study compares our 10-week
Positive Parenting Program with an
enhanced version that includes electronic
class reminders. Preliminary data
shows that participants who receive
the enhanced program have higher
completion rates than non-participants.
We’re excited about these early findings
and the promise they hold for the future.
aDVocacY in annaPoLis
With the help of a new partner — Harris
Jones and Malone, LLC — The Family Tree
ventured into new legislative territory
this year during the General Assembly’s
session. We hope to be a resource for
elected officials on issues relating to
children, like child abuse and neglect and
child protection. As part of this effort,
The Family Tree held its first successful
“Lobbying Day” in Annapolis in January
2012 with 22 staff members visiting over
20 elected officials to create awareness
of the agency and speak to what The
Family Tree is doing to help prevent child
abuse and neglect in their districts. The
Family Tree is planning another visit to
Annapolis in 2013.
conTinUing oUr gooD WorK
in 2012, The Family Tree, and staff
member Sherman Minor, were recognized
by Howard County’s most prestigious
annual program award for our MENS
Program, which serves fathers and their
children. Also, the U.S. Department of
Health and Human Services Commissioner’s
Award for outstanding leadership
and service in the prevention of child
abuse and neglect was awarded to our
Executive Director, Patricia K. Cronin.
Lastly, we began a young professionals
group, known as the Next Generation
Network, to foster younger volunteers
and donors.

more difficult…not only for me, but also for my kids. I heard
about The Family Tree’s parenting classes and thought I would
give it a try. It made such a difference in me and my life. I

to give back. I am now a Helpline volunteer. The Family
Tree is one of the best things that has ever

PArENT SUPPOrT STrENGTHENS FAMiLY
“ I did my best as a single mother to make a future for my two
children, but it was hard. I work full-time to pay my bills, but
it didn’t leave me with much time for my kids. My son was
struggling with friends at school and my daughter wouldn’t
share anything with me. I didn’t know what to do. That’s
when I found a Parents Anonymous ® support group. I
attended weekly groups with other parents. It was great —
they gave me support, encouragement and ideas about how
to help my kids. My kids participated in a Children’s Program
while I was in my class. I can say now that the groups made
such a difference to me and my children. I realized that I am
a good mother. My son, who is shy, has become more social
and is even reading ahead of his classmates; and my daugh-
ter is talking to me more. The support group really
helped me and my family.”

ON A NEW PATH
“ I found out about The Family Tree from the Department
of Social Services (DSS). They referred me to PATH
(Parenting Assistance in the Home) program when my 18
month old son was removed from my home. After three
months of parent training, my son was returned to me. It was
still a challenge to manage behavior and didn’t know what
to do. I confided in my Family Tree worker who came to my
home. During our weekly visits, she helped me understand
my child’s development and showed me ways to better deal
with his behavior. i am so grateful for the help i
have gotten from The Family Tree. i feel like i
have a new beginning.”
