I returned to <strong>Oaxaca</strong> <strong>in</strong> July 2000, <strong>in</strong> part to give a paper at the 4th International<br />
Biennial Symposium sponsored by the Welte Institute for <strong>Oaxaca</strong>n Studies and<br />
especially because I needed to go back to Santa Maria Coatlan. I found that there had<br />
been several changes <strong>in</strong> the village, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the addition of a telephone. The Cruzes<br />
were no longer work<strong>in</strong>g at the Ethnobotanical Garden as both had accepted "cargo"<br />
positions <strong>in</strong> the village, Señor Enrique’s be<strong>in</strong>g particularly important. He was<br />
responsible for both the shr<strong>in</strong>e at the top of the hill and the modern church built next to<br />
the ru<strong>in</strong>s of the 1660 one, destroyed by the earthquake of 1870. He was also <strong>in</strong> charge<br />
of the yearly festival <strong>in</strong> honor of the Virg<strong>in</strong>, a complicated task <strong>in</strong>deed s<strong>in</strong>ce this is the<br />
time when families return from everywhere, expect<strong>in</strong>g a memorable occasion.<br />
