Decade of Mission at Hope Lutheran
Looking backwards is useful. It helps us see where we have been and how
God has been at work through us, guiding our journey to bring us to where
we are today. As we begin a new decade, I invite you to join me in taking a
look back and celebrating all we have accomplished together since 2000.
2000 – Y2k scare. It was a wet year – June
19 rain caused a flood that impacted many
members of Hope Lutheran and flooded the
North Campus basement. Hope Lutheran
began the decade with baptized membership
of 6780 souls and a projected budget of
1.645 million. HopeCare and Alpha had been
launched the year before and were just getting
their legs under them. The congregation voted
to build a sanctuary at the South Campus and
to renovate the North Campus sanctuary. $2.7
million was pledged to the Continuing the
Journey called Hope campaign.
2001 began with record energy costs.
The 9/11 tragedy impacted us all. We
experienced a recession and the budget
was revised mid-year. Still we stayed
mission focused. Wednesday Worship
was launched at the North Campus as
well as Hope Lutheran’s afterschool
program. Construction of the South
Campus Sanctuary and renovation of
North Campus were underway.
2002-2003 highlights included the first
annual HopeFest celebration. First
worship service was held in the newly
constructed South Campus sanctuary and
in the newly renovated North Campus
sanctuary. Continued on page 2
2004 team-focused-ministry was fully implemented.
Women’s Ministry staff position was added, launching a
new day for Women’s Ministry at Hope Lutheran. Our first
Habitat house was built (first time ever in this region that a
congregation took the lead on a build). Since then we have
built six Habitat homes. Small groups were also implemented
and launched.
2005 Pastor Dave Johnson announced retirement plans.
FUEL worship service began. Nearly $85,000 was raised
and given away in the form of special missions – focused
benevolences to Habitat for Humanity, Churches United for
the Homeless and the disasters caused by the Indonesian Tsunami and Hurricane Katrina.
2006 was the first year we had more than 200 baptisms at Hope Lutheran. Global Mission expanded
ministry in Central African Republic (CAR) and together we built the Central Temple in Bouar,
providing an AIDS storage facility under the church building. Hope Lutheran’s generosity again
exceeded its goal of $50,000 as $70,000 was given.
2007 – Building Bridges to a Living Hope campaign was launched as
we stretched ourselves once again to meet the needs of new and
renewed education space at both North & South Campus. $3.27
million was pledged. The campaign focused on Local, Regional, and
Global themes which included a rural internship start – a Thrivent
grant of $177,000 was secured to support internships. $150,000 of
the pledges was dedicated to build a medical clinic in Gallo, CAR.
2008 we celebrated the 50th A Decade of Mission
Women’s Ministry
year of Hope Lutheran Church and surpassed 10,000 members.
2009 began with a historic flood. (Another one!) We were into a great recession; completed
construction on Building Bridges project; launched a new vision for children’s ministry; Child Care
Center services were added at the North Campus; Wednesday worship was added at the South
Campus; Rural internship partnerships were launched; Hope Lutheran’s website was updated.
Since 2000 staffing updates include: Addition of technology
and media positions; two additional full time Student Ministry
directors; Women’s Ministry director; FUEL director; four parttime
worship leaders (which helps meet the needs of 10 services);
and additional South Campus hospitality and HopeCare support.
Some significant statistics highlighting the ministry and mission of
Hope Lutheran: 2000-2009
• Baptism = 1987 • Membership = added 3524 members
• Funerals = 269 • Number of households = added 1404
• Weddings = 734 • Budget: Projected = +1.055 Million
• Confirmations = 1397 • Capital Campaign Pledges = 5.9 million
These statistics are important in that they give us a picture
of mission and ministry at Hope Lutheran, of what we have
accomplished together focusing on the mission of Jesus. What
these statistics do not address adequately, and what is far more
important, is the interactions, relationships, countless acts of
personal ministry and the stories of individual faith journeys.
God has been at work in the midst of our journey! God is at work
calling us to reach for the future He has in mind for us.
My hope and prayer for us is that the next 10 years of Hope
Lutheran’s future can be as productive for the kingdom of God as
the last 10 years have been. And working together, guided by the
Spirit of God, Hope Lutheran’s mission will continue to produce
success and significance making a difference for God and His
kingdom, not only in Fargo, but in our region and throughout our
world.
Have Faith - End Hunger
“Someone who sits down and writes a letter about hunger almost literally has to be saving
a life.” Paul Simon – U.S. Senator from Illinois (1985-1997)
Would you save someone’s life if you had the power? Of course you would! And
you do have the power if you take to heart the words of former Senator Paul
Simon. Many of us already help alleviate hunger by donating money or groceries to food banks
but, with so many hungry people in the world, we would like to do more. Bread for the World is a
collective Christian voice urging our nation’s decision makers to end hunger at home and abroad.
A single decision by Congress can provide needed help to millions of people and this is why your
letters are so important. By changing policies, programs and conditions that allow hunger and
poverty to persist in the world, we provide help and opportunity far beyond what one individual
can do. But your letters to Congress are necessary to make change happen because the poor cannot
afford lobbyists.
Since several tax measures expire this year, the 2010 goal of BFW is to pass legislation to protect and
strengthen tax credits that benefit low-income families in the United States. These programs work.
In 2005, the Earned Income Tax Credit alone lifted more than 5 million people above the poverty
line so these families had more money left for food after paying necessary fixed expenses. Our
church will have an Offering of Letters Sunday, April 18, but you can learn more by going to www.
offeringofletters.org right now. The web site explains how the Earned Income Tax Credit works and
also contains a sample letter to Congress. You can bring your letter to our BFW table April 18 or we
will have form letters available for you to sign. Remember you may be saving a life! If you would be
willing to work a shift at one of our tables, call Roger at 218-233-4550 to volunteer.
To help Operation Joshua run smoothly we need the assistance of the congregation. The
must have the correct and current rank, name, mailing address and length of deployment of
your military service member. We want to continue to thank them for their sacrifice. Please
contact Randy or Dorothy at HopeOperationJoshua@yahoo.com with any information.
Prayer Shawls are a loving reminder of God’s Presence
NeedleWorks Ministry is made up of
caring knitters and crocheters who craft
shawls laden with prayers. The Prayer
Shawl is given to someone special as a
loving reminder of God’s presence. The
quiet prayers and busy needles create a
shawl that brings physical warmth and
spiritual comfort. Whispered prayers of
hope mingle with the strands of yarn.
The love of Jesus is expressed through a
caring embrace, the embrace of a Prayer
Shawl wrapped comfortingly around
the shoulders of another. NeedleWorks
meets every other Monday, 7:00pm.
(See schedule on page 11.)
Remember HopeCare When You are Cleaning
As you prepare for cleanup week, think about Caring for the Community: We need gently used
lamps, end tables, chest of drawers, mattresses, box springs, frames, bookcases, TVs (not consoles),
vacuums, sofas, chairs and microwaves. No large appliances, please.
These individuals have completed extensive training
and are now prepared to be CareGivers to those in
need in our church and community. Please continue
to keep them in your prayers.
Think about those you know in your family,
workplace or neighborhood who would benefit from
the confidential Christian care a Stephen Minister
can provide. Call Amy Tronsgard or a pastor at Hope
Lutheran, 235-6629 or visit www.fargohope.org
under Ministries-HopeCare.
Grieving the loss of a loved one can overwhelm us with pain, sadness, anger, guilt and a range of other emotions. Sharing your thoughts
and emotions with others who care and have experienced the loss of someone they love, is one of the most healing gifts you can give
yourself. You are invited to join our Grief Support Group on Mondays, 6:30pm, North Campus.
Continue to pray for our military personnel
Spotlight on Hopekids Volunteers
Teresa Benson, Small Group Leader
Teresa Benson has been a Sunday School teacher at Hope
Lutheran Church for the past two years. Last spring she decided
to take some time off from volunteering until she heard about
the new Hopekids program.
Teresa is currently a small group leader for 3 & 4 year olds
and absolutely loves it! Previously, Teresa found it a challenge
to maintain children’s attention for an entire hour. Now, with
praise and worship time at the front of the hour, followed by
a lesson taught/acted by a drama team, and ending with 20
minutes of small group time, keeping a child engaged is no
longer a problem.
According to Teresa, “The colorful and exciting stage sets
and props keep the kids excited to learn the lesson, and ageappropriate
activities make the time go by quickly!” Teresa
encourages others to become involved with Hopekids. She
says, “It’s a fun and rewarding way to teach children about the
Bible.”
Genora Schjeldrup, Set Design
“Praise God for the opportunity we have been given to inform
God’s children about Him.” That is the philosophy Genora
Schjeldrup holds true to her heart and faithfully demonstrates
as a Hopekids volunteer. Genora is the creativity behind the
imaginative drama set designs, props and costumes for the 3 &
4-year-old classrooms at both campuses.
She understands how important it is to see through a child’s
eyes, capturing their attention and imagination for the teaching
of Bible lessons. Genora says, “It is fun and simple to be a
Hopekids volunteer, and the kids are so appreciative!”
