To encourage all people to know the love of Christ 

God sent his Son Jesus into this 

world to seek and save the lost. 

That was Jesus’ main mission. To 

this day, it’s the main mission of all 

who call themselves followers of 

Jesus. Our responsibility is to reach 

out to a broken, sinful world with 

the Good News of God’s Grace. 

Jesus’ words to His first followers, 

who were fishermen, are the same 

words to engage us, “Follow me 

and I will make you fish for people” 

(Mark 1:17). 

For many of us, summer season 

is fishing season. North Dakota 

walleye limit is 5. Minnesota’s limit is 

6. But, in the kingdom of God, there 

is no limit, because God is love. 

God loves everyone on this planet. 

He created us to be in relationship 

with Him. His heart breaks for those 

who are lost and searching, not 

sure where they stand with God, or 

even if there is a God. God’s desire,

might be saved and come to 

knowledge of the truth” (1 Timothy 

2:4). God’s plan to reach the lost

me. There is no Plan B. You and I, 

as His followers, are who He calls to 

become fishers of people. 

Hope Lutheran’s summer worship 

theme will focus on the main 

mission of Jesus. Sometimes 

it’s called outreach, sometimes 

evangelism, but it’s always about 

fishing for people separated from 

God. We use the tackle box of gifts 

that God gives us to reach out with 

the Good News of Christ.

Wednesday Service a Great Option for 

“Lake People” 

Quick! What’s the 3 rd commandment? 

Did you give up or did you know the answer? 

Here it is: “Remember the Sabbath Day to keep it Holy.” In fact, 

the Bible tells us that God “blessed the 7

th day and consecrated 

it” (Exodus 20: 11b). This commandment is aimed at our worship 

lives. Worship is critical to our relationship with God. For a person 

to say they believe in God, but not worship Him, is like a man 

saying to a woman, “I love you,” but never proving his love. After 

a while she’ll wonder what he’s talking about. 

God is worthy of our worship. God’s Word is the food our souls 

need to stay God-centered. In worship we tend to give God’s Spirit 

access to our lives in a way we don’t otherwise offer to God. 

Worship is the central practice to our life as a follower of Jesus! 

Having said that, I know there is a great temptation during the 

summer months. Winters are long in North Dakota and the lake 

season is short. When the weekend comes people head to the 

lakes so the temptation is to take a vacation from worship. 

We want to help you continue honoring the 3rd commandment even during the summer months, 

so for the second straight year we will be offering worship on Wednesdays at the North Campus, 

6:00pm. Last year, average worship attendance was 86 people per week on Wednesday. As that 

number grows, and as the need develops, we will add a worship opportunity Wednesday evenings 

at the South Campus as well. 

If you know you will be out of town or at the lake over the weekend, why not worship with us on 

Wednesday? You’ll be honoring God’s commandment and it will be good for your soul. See you in 

worship this summer!

“I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you . . .” (Romans 1:8) 

What a great privilege it has been to serve on Hope Lutheran’s staff for 

the past 25 years. There have been many changes, challenges and rewards 

during that time and I thank God for giving me the opportunity to work 

with, and for, such wonderful people. Hope Lutheran Church will always 

have a very special place in my heart. 

God has certainly blessed Hope Lutheran, as is evidenced by the growth that 

we have experienced and the mission and ministry that this congregation 

has been able to do. I feel very blessed to have been a small part of serving 

God at this special place! 

I am very humbled and thankful to all of you for your support over the

years and for all the phone calls, visits, hugs, kind words, cards and gifts. 

The gift card for a wine train trip through Napa Valley was a real surprise – I am still in shock!

We will be outside as long as the 

weather (wind, rain, temperature, 

and humidity) allow.

Global Connections 

Attend a Short term Mission Trip to Jamaica, January 2012 

Mission Jamaica offers two weeks to choose for a vacation with a mission: 

• January 14-21, Montego Bay area: Serve at the Westhaven Orphanage and various Habitiat for 

Humanity build sites. We are also hoping to have a medical team serving at St. John’s Methodist 

Church located in downtown Montego Bay. There you will help welcome clients and prepare 

them for their medical visit. 

• January 21-29, the Kingston area: Serve at several schools with on-going maintenance needs 

and construct a community bathroom. You can also assist with the breakfast feeding program 

as we seek to feed kids before school from a sidewalk kitchen. 

Estimated costs for these trips are $2,000, all-inclusive. (Costs and deposit amounts subject to 

change upon final quotes. $150/person deposit required to reserve your space.) $550 payment due 

October 31 with registration. Balance due 60 days prior to departure. Registration forms are on line 

or the Information Center at both campuses. Watch for informational meetings held in August 2011

Habitat for Humanity Build 

Hope Lutheran is gearing up for another Habitat for Humanity 

build this summer. We are working with eight other area churches. 

Our specific build day is:

20 volunteers needed from Hope Lutheran 

Lunch will be provided! 

We are building for a mother and her three children. Jennelle, the 

mother, is blind and her three children live with disabilities. She 

is a very vibrant and joy-filled person so it will be fun getting to 

know her during our build.

Two Ways to Help Through Compassion 

Two of the major ways you can partner with Compassion 

International to “encourage all people to know the love of Jesus 

Christ” are through child sponsorship of individual children for 

$38/month and Child Survival Program sponsorship for $20/ 

month. 

By sponsoring a child, you can develop a relationship and provide 

ongoing support to a child; this is a life-changing opportunity for 

both you and that child. 

Through Child Survival Program sponsorship, you help support a 

specific program that provides expectant moms and their babies 

with basic survival needs such as clean water, a balanced diet, safe 

living environments and immunizations. In some impoverished 

areas, Child Survival Program staff is fighting mortality rates of 

72.8% for children under 5. Sponsoring a Child Survival Program 

allows the staff of the program to continue supporting caregivers 

and their children up to the time those children are able to enter 

a Compassion International child sponsorship program.

Men in Boats 

Still Time to Attend! 

Men in Boats is a retreat for men where God shows up! It’s important for men 

to encourage one another in their faith and challenge each other to live it 

out in their lives. That is what men do at Men in Boats by sharing their faith, 

fellowshipping with other men, spending time with old friends, making new 

friends, and taking a bit of time to fish as well. (Men registering after June 1 will 

not receive a T-shirt.)

Our world often sends us different and confusing messages of what it means to 

be a man. However, God’s Word is clear. As men we are called to be spiritual 

champions, not only in our homes, but in the world that Christ has called us to 

serve. 

Proverbs 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” 

Because of this, it is important for the men of our congregation and community 

to rally together and strengthen one another in our faith. Sometimes, the way of 

Christ can be seen as wimpy or weak. Nothing is further from the truth! 

Let’s together figure what it means to rise up to the challenge that Jesus, our

Why is it called “Stephen” Ministry? 

Acts 6 tells how the early church grew to 

the point where peoples’ needs were being 

neglected. To address these issues, the 

Apostles commissioned seven lay people to 

care for those in need. Stephen, described 

as being “full of faith and the Holy Spirit” 

and “full of God’s grace and power,” was 

the first of these seven. In a sense, he 

became the first Stephen Minister. 

How are Stephen Ministers Trained? 

Stephen Ministers undergo 40 hours 

of initial training and after being 

commissioned, they meet with their care 

receiver one hour weekly and attend 

Supervision meetings twice a month for 

a total of eight hours per month. They are 

asked to serve as a Stephen Minister for 

at least two years after commissioning. 

Among other things, they develop skills 

in reflective listening, learn guidelines on 

confidentiality, and prepare to minister 

to people in specific situations such as 

terminal illness, grief and divorce. They 

are also trained to recognize when to refer 

someone to a helping professional.

you are looking to further your faith, assist 

those in need, and learn skills that will help 

you in all areas of your life, then Stephen 

Ministry is for you! Hope Lutheran’s next 

training class for Stephen Ministers will 

start in September and we are looking 

for participants now. Please prayerfully

Wheels for the World Drive 

Wheels for the World is coming to 

the region July 23-29! Part of the 

Disability Ministry of Joni Eareckson 

Tada, WFTW collects, restores and 

delivers previously owned wheelchairs 

to people in need around the world. 

On July 23, a kick-off event will be held 

at the Miracle Field (2000 40 th Avenue 

S. Moorhead) with baseball games and 

a carnival. From July 25-29, Sanford 

clinics throughout the region will be 

designated as drop-off sites for people 

who want to donate their equipment. 

This is the fourth Wheels for the World 

drive in the area. To date, over 950 

wheelchairs have been collected. It 

is estimated that 18 million people 

worldwide are in need of a wheelchair, 

and for many it would cost more than a 

year’s wage, if one were even available.

Gallons of Gas 

Please help PowerLife students pay 

their way to a mission trip to Kentucky.

the Church Office. PowerLife’s participants 

of the Youthworks mission trip to 

Louisville, Kentucky, are raising money for 

gas to & from Kentucky. They have nearly 

reached their goal!

SEASONS 

Prayer And Meditation 

June brings to mind vacation 

plans, beaches, picnics, weddings, 

Fathers’ Day and hopes of 

sunshine, relaxation and being 

still. It’s not always easy to be still, 

even when it’s the best option, 

as we learn from the following 

scriptures. 

Be still and know that I am God. 

Psalm 46:10 

God fights for those who are 

silent. Exodus 14:14 

One of my favorite places to be 

still and relax is on my deck, 

listening to the trickle of the 

waterfall, the singing of the 

birds and watching other signs 

of nature being alive and busy. 

Being in God’s creation brings 

joy as I examine the heavens and 

feast on the colors of the trees, 

grasses and flowers. As I realize 

the perfection and order of God’s 

work in all of His creation, being 

still, listening and seeing brings 

calmness. 

This life doesn’t always bring 

us peace, rest or calmness. For 

many, the days are empty and 

only God can fill them again. Too 

often we’re caught up in the stuff 

of life and we aren’t still. We 

want to be doing “something” 

because being still before God 

seems unproductive. It’s in these 

times we need to lean hard on our 

God and dig deeper to that place 

where we walk with Him and sit 

at His feet and be still; waiting for 

Him to calm, lead and strengthen 

us. He promises perfect peace 

in Isaiah 26:3, “You will keep 

Him in perfect peace whose 

mind is stayed on You.” 

Dear Lord, please calm my 

anxious heart and help me let You 

fight for me. Remind me that You 

are always in control and nothing 

surprises You. Give me the 

wisdom to be still often and rest 

with You and allow You to work 

so Your perfect plan and will is 

completed in me and around me. 

I pray this in Your perfect name. 

Amen.

Spring Brunch - 2011 

The 155 Women who attended the Spring Brunch, May 7, heard 

Dr. Susan Vitalis talk about empowering women in Central 

African Republic and India. Music by Later Rain Ministries Praise 

and Worship Team was an added blessing. Dr. Susan told of the 

great need for blankets in C.A.R. and 158 blankets were collected 

to be sent to the area.

Dear Hope Pastors, Staff, Council, and members, 

Thank you so much for all the support, 

guidance, & prayers you’ve given me these past four 

years of Seminary. I am so proud & blessed because of 

the role that Hope Lutheran has played in my life. It 

truly is a special congregation & I wouldn’t be here if 

it weren’t for you. 

I am currently 6 weeks away from graduation 

and I couldn’t be more excited. My wife, Bobbie Jo, 

just got a fantastic full-time job teaching elementary 

school in St. Anthony and so we’ve decided to restrict 

our search to the Twin Cities. 

On top of that, Good Shepherd, a congregation 

in Wayzata where I served as Youth director for 3 

years has decided to call an associate pastor in Youth 

& Family Ministry. They have decided to interview me 

along with the other candidates so hopefully that is 

where God wants us to be! 

Hope has been a huge part of my life for 25 years 

and it is the place where I first heard God’s call to go 

into ministry. I can’t thank you enough for all you’ve 

done for me and my family.
