life is rebuilt
Editor’s note: Once a month a
graduation is held at St. Vincent de
Paul Village to celebrate residents’
completion of programs on their
path to self-sufficiency. Graduation
begins with a speech by a resident
who has made notable achievements.
In October, DeAnn T. gave the
following speech.
By DeAnn T.
Hi, my name is
DeAnn – I was
born and raised
in a small town
north of here
called Visalia.
My drug of
choice is meth.
Before coming to St. Vinny’s
I was living on the streets, place
to place, shelter to shelter with
my three children – my thoughts
consisting of when and how I
could get my next fix – and how I
could add to my chaos. Of course
with my mindset and the situation
I was in, I ended up in jail and the
loss of my children.
Recovery was my first step to so
many other things. Coming here to
St. Vinny’s was very scary for me.
I’m going to talk about fear and
recovery, which is good because
I’m afraid of doing this right now!
Fear isn’t about what you already
know. If you know it, you won’t be
afraid of it.
In recovery, you already know
what drug use does for you, so you
are not afraid of it.
Fear is about the unknown.
Fear to me is about the possibility
of positive things in my life. Part
of my recovery has been about
addressing that fear.
The smallest of gardens is
growing under the shade of a
short tree on 17th Street. The row
of chilies and onions was planted
by Sandra Sanchez and Thomas
Alvarez, two homeless adults who
spend their days safely inside the
yard of the Neil Good Day Center.
Like most neighbors, Sandra and
Thomas want to work, have a safe
place to live and be able to afford
food. But because they haven’t
been able to find work, they don’t
have money for either. For them,
Sandra says, the Neil Good Day
Center is home.
In September, the center
at 299 17th St. managed by
St. Vincent de Paul Village began
operating on weekends thanks
to emergency funding from the
City of San Diego and United
Way of San Diego County. To
mark the occasion, Father Joe
Carroll hosted a meal on Sept.
27 in honor of St. Vincent de
Paul, the date of Vincent’s death
in 1660. Father Joe was joined by
San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders,
Councilman Kevin Faulconer and
Doug Sawyer, president of United
Way of San Diego County.
Sandra, who has been using the
center since she lost her residence
in July, says she feels welcome
and part of the family at the Day
Center. “It’s a blessing. We are
able to eat and not be dirty,” she
says of the laundry facilities at the
center, the showers at St. Vincent
de Paul Village and the lunch she
and Thomas eat seven days a week
at the Village just blocks away. “We
wouldn’t eat if it was not for Father
Joe,” she says.
While they look for work, Sandra
and Thomas spend their days at the
Neil Good Day Center – 6 a.m. to 4
p.m. Monday through Friday, and
6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on weekends.
“We appreciate everything here,”
Sandra says, mentioning she has
used the medical services available
once a week. “There’s a lot of love;
we feel safe and protected.”
At night the couple sleeps under
a nearby bridge, but says they’ll
probably be moving because the
police said they had to.
“Our number-one priority is
to find work,” Sandra says. At
the center they have received bus
tokens to aid in their job search. “If
you get a job you can advance. It
should be easy for us; we don’t use
drugs or alcohol.” Thomas eagerly
lists his skills – construction,
plumbing, painting, flooring,
leatherwork, and gardening.
at the day center. He proudly
For Christmas, backpacks of joy
By Earlene Thompson
The first time I worked on Christmas morning
at the Paul Mirabile Center (PMC) it was very
heartwarming. I must say I was not ready for the
magnitude of residents and neighbors in need we
served that day.
Everyone is welcomed on Christmas morning to the
tune of a magnificent sit-down breakfast in the PMC
dining room where the tables are all adorned with
festive décor. Our guests are greeted by volunteers –
some who look forward to this day throughout the
entire year – all who are proud neighbors helping
neighbors spreading holiday cheer.
The menu usually consists of sausage and bacon,
eggs, hash brown potatoes, fresh rolls, juice and milk.
Our neighbors in need who have only St. Vincent de
Paul Village to turn to for their holiday meal are seated
at tables and served by volunteers. After breakfast they
exit the cafeteria to receive their wonderful, and often
unexpected, gift.
Each year we distribute approximately 1,500
backpacks full of basic necessities. Father Joe Carroll
sees to it that not only do our current residents
receive a backpack, but our neighbors in need in the
community as well. Staff members, who have also
taken time out of their Christmas morning to bring
joy to others, hand out the backpacks one by one.
Backpacks contain items such as a sweatshirt, socks,
knitted hat, hygiene kit, water bottle, and pocket
organizer. Some years there has been an extra added
surprise such as a wrist watch.
To see the joy in our neighbors’ faces when they
receive this most precious gift is a joy in itself. I have
been coming to the Christmas morning backpack
give away for five
years, and each year it
truly is a blessed and
heartwarming beginning
to my holiday.
Father Joe's Villages
Chuck Valverde, former board member
Chuck Valverde’s
knowledge could fill
volumes in any library.
The owner of the
venerable Wahrenbrock’s
Book House and former
board member of St. Vincent de Paul Village
died on August 24 after a brief illness. He
was 73.
Officiating at Mr. Valverde’s memorial
service at the Scottish Rite Center, Father
Joe Carroll recalled Chuck’s decision to join
St. Vincent’s board.
Chuck would come to work at the
bookshop in the morning to find homeless
people sleeping on the steps of his business.
So he decided the best way to address the
situation of homelessness was to join the
one man who was doing an effective job.
That was Chuck, always finding an answer
for anyone with a question and sharing it
unconditionally – with a smile and a story.
For more than 40 years Chuck ran
Wahrenbrock’s, the oldest antiquarian
the community. He shared his books and
knowledge with all who entered or asked –
readers, collectors and other independent
book store owners.
“He was extremely supportive of local
writers,” says Jan Tonnesen, a 30-year
employee of Wahrenbrock’s. “They would
come in looking for references they couldn’t
find anywhere else. He knew exactly where
to find what they wanted, and always found
more. He could quote books and give you
information about books. He understood
the commerce of books; being able to get
the right books into the right hand.”
Before owning Wahrenbrock’s, Chuck
was involved with the University of
California’s expansion to San Diego, Irvine
and Santa Cruz, helping start campus
bookshops and libraries.
In addition to being a board member
of St. Vincent de Paul Village from 1995-
2007, Chuck was a supporter and former
president of the Central Library Friends of
Homeless count
Continued from page 1
says, “We rely on volunteers
throughout the county to go into
the streets, alleys and canyons
and count the number of homeless
people they see.”
The count is done in teams of two
that do a walking or rolling count
and includes no direct contact with
homeless persons. In addition to
assisting with the count, volunteers
Recovery
Continued from page 1
The hard part wasn’t quitting the drugs.
The hard part was learning about commitment,
which meant learning all the other things that come
along with it such as effective communication and
listening, healthy boundaries and relationships, as
well as learning how to be assertive.
I took the Healthy Relationships class here and it
was a great class where I learned about some of the
things I just mentioned.
I also took Process Education with Cheryl (Knight),
Relapse Prevention with Steve (Masters), and
Aftercare with Jon (Lutack). I definitely got the benefit
of having three different counselors and learned from
each of them.
Processing helped me to change my ways of
thinking.
When you take the time to think you are able to use
the mental tools like breathing before just reacting.
Just reacting only makes things worse.
Taking time to think allows you to make better
choices.
Once I took the steps to address my recovery, it gave
me all the tools I needed to make changes in other
areas of my life. Living life on life’s terms allows you
the ability to maneuver.
Bottom line: It’s OK to be scared.
attend a two-hour training session
prior to the count.
With more than 7,500 homeless
individuals in the region at any
given time, efforts to reduce
homelessness depend, in part, on
accessible information, according to
the RTFH, which serves as a central
clearinghouse on homelessness in
San Diego County.
Fear itself isn’t so bad.
Using everything that you learn from addressing
your fears, you can make better choices and see
progress in your life.
Since I have been here at Vinny’s I have learned
to utilize all that Vinny’s has to offer and with their
help I’ve rebuilt many relationships that included
my children, family and friends. As well as getting
married, keeping the same job of a year now.
These are just some of the things that I’ve done with
my life since coming to St. Vinny’s.
In closing I’d like to read a quote from Ralph
Waldo Emerson:
To laugh often and much
To laugh often and much; To win the respect of
intelligent people and the affection of children; To
earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure
the betrayal of false friends; To appreciate beauty,
to find the best in others; To leave the world a bit
better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or
a redeemed social condition; To know even one life
has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to
have succeeded.
