Lewis & Clark Medallion Unveiling
The Maryland School for the Deaf
served as host for a medallion
dedication commemorating
the role played by the
Hessian Barracks in the 1803
preparation of the Lewis and
Clark Expedition. The funds
for the medallion were raised
by the Frederick Chapter
of the Daughters of the
American Revolution and its installation
sponsored by local businesses.
Once the leaves are off the trees, the
Maryland Association of Historical
Surveyors will get exact GPS coordinates
that will then be registered
with the National Oceanographic and
Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
The day-long event featured
many activities for all ages. Re-

enactors in period dress gave
lectures on the central mall while
many exhibitors showed
period items such as musical
instruments (which they
played), surveying equipment,
clothing, tools, and
weapons. Even a precursor
of the camera was on display.
National, state, and local officials
participated in the unveiling
ceremonies which were followed by
a short play involving an exchange
between President Thomas Jefferson
and Meriwether Lewis.
Finally, the Lewis and Clark
Trail Heritage Foundation, which
assisted in the day’s events, will be
making a monetary contribution
toward a permanent exhibit in the
Barracks honoring
its role in the
Expedition.
