Did you, like a lot of us,
go down to the station to
meet the Rocky Mountaineer
Vacation train on it's
inaugural run?
Widi between 200 and
250 people, I got to talk to
quite a few who were there.
It reminded me of a time
when meeting the train was
a welcomed pastime.
Not many of us can
remember a time before
everyone had a television
set or a radio. A time when
going out for a car ride,
just for the joy of it, was
pojpuiat ^ ~ ~
Now we kip all over the
place and thuik nothing of
going to Vancouver (even at
$1.20 a litre for gasoline).
I remember when Saturday
night rolled around, we
would all get biuidled up
and jimip in the ol* jalopy
and head down to die rail
road station to watch the
train come in.
Quesnel's train station does
not look much different today
than It did In 1932 when this
photo was talten.
Photo courtesy of Quesnel and District
Museum and Arcfaleves
Not only to watch the
Tra^ come in, but who got
on and more importandy,
who got off.
Whereever we lived,
whether it was Exetei; in
the 100 Mile House area,
Williams Lake, Marguerite,
Soda Creek or Quensel, everyone
did the same thing.
Once the train continued
on its journey we all went
backhome.
Back then, this was a big
deal.
We would be disappointed
if no one got on or off the
train, but full of talk about
who did.
Seems we have come full
circle. Wasn't that just what
we were doing on the other
RMVs train eventually
came into the station, in all
its beauty. Late, but no one
seemed to mind.
Most just shrugged and
commented that trains are
always late.
We were glad to see it
and those on board seemed
pleased to see us.
Italked to a gendeman
from London, England and
a lady from Milwaukee,
Wise. They bpthhad die
same response to my hellos.
They were amazed at
the waiting crowds and
tremendous welcome. They
thought it was just fabulous
we had all waited until they
arrived.
I wouldn't have missed it.
