United
Waipa District Council hosted a
breakfast meeting on Friday aimed
at bringing people together to
address issues around at risk youth
and their families.
A multi-agency approach is
being proposed involving Police,
Council, help agencies, education
and business sectors.
This is the first of two parts the
Courier is presenting on how Join
the Dots aims to help young people
in our community.
While Council hosted the event,
and mayor Alan Livingston was
MC, the breakfast was sponsored by
Te Awamutu Altrusa as part of its
youth initiatives, and speakers
were from a range of agencies.
The opening address was from
Senior Sergeant Pete Van de
Wetering.
He said the initiative started as a
result of Area Commander Inspector
Carpenter and his Raglan staff
trialling out help for a young person
and the idea of some sort of panel to
address youth problems was discussed.
The concept was something like
Family Violence panels that have
now been in existence for some
time and have proved to be quite
successful.
Over the winter months several
people developed the youth panel
idea.
It is envisaged people or
agencies could refer youth who are
showing signs of being at risk of
developing behavioural problems,
which could eventually lead to
criminal behaviour.
The panel would intervene to
steer that child, collaboratively
with their family, away from that
potential for trouble.
Mr Van de Wetering said the
reasons for the initiative were twofold.
Firstly was for Police to work
8896700AA
smarter to reduce crime by
intervening and preventing
criminal activity.
‘‘Youth are one of the recognised
five drivers of crime, therefore we
have to invest in prevention devices
to curb and indeed turn around the
rate of youth crime,’’ he said.
‘‘We can’t do it alone, we need to
partner with our community to do
it. And we do need to do it before
youth get immersed in the youth
justice system.’’
Secondly, New Zealand has one
of the highest youth suicide rates in
the western world.
‘‘By 2020 depression is going to
be the greatest cause of death in the
western world if things continue
the way the are,’’ he said.
‘‘Many of our youth who are in
trouble are there because they
simply don’t know what is possible
and what they are capable of.
‘‘Many of them at a tender age
have lost hope.
‘‘We would rather invest in
preventing a life of crime before it
starts.’’
How the panel will work
is ongoing, but it is envisaged
it will have enough representation
across the community
that it has a broad
range of intelligence, ideas
and influence, without being
too large and inefficient.
Police would be just part
of the panel and the primary
aim is to youth of intermediate
school age while they can
still be influenced in the right
direction.
A leader needs to be found
who can tap into the
resources of the community
to have an influence of young
people and their families.
This help can be in the
form of simply exposing the
youth, and hopefully their
SENIOR sergeant Pete Van de Wetering outlined the ‘what, why and
how’ Join the Dots could work in Te Awamutu.
family, to alternative or additional
activity which the youth and their
family will have no idea of, such as
work, sports, arts, culture . . . some
mentoring or similar to give young
people ideas and hope for their own
Mr Van de Wetering says a key
to the success will be community
ownership.
Council decisions ‘exacerbated’ rates problem
Mr Finn, thanks for the
lecture. This is only the third
time we’ve had it.
Granted the biggest portion
of the rates increase results
from the revaluation of property,
this is beyond Council’s
control. Acknowledged.
Mr Finn I have spoken to a
several thousand people during
the last month, the following
points come through loud and
clear.
The Council has exacerbated
the rates problem by adding an
extra $76 on Te Awamutu rates
to cover the Museum and
Events Centre and in the same
year cancelled the 5 percent
discount (for prompt payment)
This year’s rates are the
‘straw that broke the camel’s
back’. Then the Council wastes
huge amounts of our money on
a Velodrome and Cambridge
Pool against the public’s
wishes.
Wake up and listen? You are
Claims contradictory
To say that the council does
not listen and then to criticise the
removal of the 5 percent discount
is a contradiction.
Council removed the discount,
following a submission from a
member of the public closely
aligned to the Waipa Citizens and
Ratepayers Association, as we
recognised people on lower
incomes were subsidising those
who could actually afford to pay
their rates in an up-front single
lump sum. Those who paid their
rates by instalment were
subsidising 25 percent of ratepayers
to the tune of $309,000.
This equated to a 0.8 percent
rates reduction in the amount of
revenue we would have otherwise
needed to collect across the district.
It was about being fair and
equitable.
The letter writer quotes budget
and debt increase percentages
published in a June Waikato
Times article. Council does not
believe these figures are fairly
presented and they do not recognise
that Waipa is actually
starting from a good position, as
supported by other comparative
data, which in effect exaggerates
the increases.
We consulted the community
on all of the projects we intend to
carry out as part of the 10 Year
Plan process, the majority of
which are infrastructure and
compliance requirements. We listened
to the submitters and then
made decisions we believed were
in the best interest of the community
both for today and into
the future.
In 2011/12 the average rates
cost per rateable property was
$6.31 per day. For that we provided
a host of activities. Any
significant rates reduction would
likely affect these levels of service
and the community would be
faced with making some hard
decisions on what they are willing
to sacrifice.
Waipa residents have been
consistent in telling the council
they want high levels of service.
This is what I believe contributed
to 94 percent of residents
reporting in the annual NRB
survey that they would recommend
Waipa as a great place to
live.
Concern has always
been residents’ welfare
It must hard for many residents
to make head or tail of
what the issues over the rates
are as there seems to be so
many different versions.
I have concerns with some
of the statements made by Pat
Bishop in Tuesday’s paper —
‘‘the fiasco councillors made of
fixing the 2012/13 rates’’.
My personal recollections is
that at that meeting it was
decided to try and achieve a
better balance in rating levies
and not so many crossover
charges from one ward to
another.
The increases we voted on
was just over $62 in Cambridge
and just over $65 in Te Awamutu
with a district average of
4.1-4.2 percent which seemed
fair under the circumstances.
When the flyer came out
circulated to all homes the
figures in that were the same
ones we saw in March, I
debated several times on the
imbalance between Te Awamutu
and Cambridge at meet-
If so, then you need to join us tonight at
6.30pm at homeward Te Awamutu and
and what to do about them.
what a new, quality bed will do for your
health and wellbeing.
Those attending will have the opportunity to
SAVE UP 50%
on normal retail
ings also wanting the rates
indicators to go out 10 years.
It was not until the rate
accounts were sent out did we
know the total impact. Other
local councillors rang me
expressing real concerns, to
their credit the Council rating
staff called a special meeting
with local Councillors in
which a frank discussion took
place.
After that a notice of notion
on behalf of Hazel Barnes and
me was put to the August 7
Finance meeting ‘to initiate a
review’ on rates, it was passed
and amended at the August 28
Council meeting to ‘the merits
or otherwise’ and to present a
report to the October 9 Strategic
Planning meeting.
This is not about attributing
blame but hopefully to get a
fairer more equitable rating
system for Waipa residents.
My concern has always
been their wellbeing.
Festival celebrates
its Diamond year
BY CATHY ASPLIN
In the very first programme of
the Te Awamutu Competitions
Society Annual Festival two of the
young entrants were Wendy Bell
and Beverley Hey.
They were placed second in the
piano duet at St Andrew’s Hall,
after playing ‘Hungarian Dance
No1’.
The women will be better
known to people today as Wendy
Bain and Beverley Bryant.
Both have been stalwarts of the
Competitions Society over the
years and are delighted to see the
festival reach its Diamond Jubilee
this year.
Both are also life members and
have contributed enormously to
the success of the annual event.
Mrs Bryant has been a piano
teacher in Te Awamutu for many
years and is currently co-convenor
of the pianoforte section.
Her late father Les Hey was a
founding member, president of the
society for eight years and later
became patron.
Mrs Bain is currently a
convenor of the vocal section and
was society president for 16 years.
She is the longest serving member
of the Te Awamutu Competitions
Society (40 years) and has
many fond memories of being both
a competitor and a committee
person.
‘‘People are often surprised that
I started playing piano because I
am probably better know as a
singer.
‘‘But in those days you weren’t
allowed to start singing before you
were 16 as it wasn’t supposed to be
good for your voice.’’
Of course many will know Mrs
Bain went on to compete regularly
in the vocal section and with great
success.
Her name is engraved on the
oldest trophy the society currently
presents.
The Gavin Gifford Memorial
Challenge Cup was first awarded
in 1953 to local singer Helen Taylor.
Mrs Bain won it in 1958 and
other winners include Malvina
Major (1962) and Kiri Te Kanawa
(1963).
‘‘Sister Mary Leo used to send
‘‘The vocal section often ran late
and in those days the adjudicators,
such as Alma Johnson, often came
from Auckland too.
‘‘I remember one year the section
was running late so they called
realised he hadn’t filled in information
we had to ring the station and hold
‘‘We also did lots of baking and
She says the festival has been a
she hopes it will continue to be an
not as usual.
clients can come to the back door
of her Arawata Street shop — the
front door is out of action after a
stolen car crashed into it Sunday
evening.
The car had been stolen from
carpark earlier and was seen by
Police on Alexandra Street.
There was short pursuit and
the driver lost control and
and into the shop doorway.
Four men in the car
attempted to decamp the scene.
Two were apprehended and
arrested on a variety of charges.
Two are still being sought.
It is expected to take a couple
welcome to phone or call at the
LETTER TO THE EDITOR
The Letter to the Editor on
makes some wildly inaccurate
statements which have to be
responded to.
Statement ‘‘Waipa District
Council is overspending each
year’’. Council sets its rates with
the objective of a break even
result. For the 2011/12 year we
have reported an audited cash
surplus of $104,000. For an incredibly
diverse, multi-million dollar
business with $1.1 billion of
assets this clearly shows that we
are running a financially tight
ship.
Statement ‘‘The fiasco councillors
made of fixing 2012/13
rates at a closed meeting in
October 2011’’. Again, totally
inaccurate. The fact is that we
consulted with our community
on the level of services and rates
as part of the 10-Year Plan process
in March 2012, submissions
were considered at a public meeting
in May and rates for 2012/13
were adopted at a public council
meeting in June. This was a very
public process.
Statement ‘‘Substantial costs
in excess of $800,000 that were
previously charged to properties
connected to the water and
sewerage systems have been
transferred to the general and
ward rates resulting in all rural
properties being charged for
town services’’. All properties,
including rural properties, are
being charged for the policy,
monitoring and enforcement
components of council providing
water and sewerage. This is a
whole of district benefit and
therefore cost. The costs of the
actual service delivery remains
with the users.
Statement ‘‘It is a fallacy that
the increase of 4.3 percent was
spread across the different mix of
rates’’. The increase in total rates
requirement this year was 4.3
percent. This figure is correct
and consistent. At the same time
we consistently emphasised that
it would not fall evenly across the
district, let alone between property
types and individual properties.
Statement ‘‘Mayor and councillors
have tried to blame property
revaluation for the big rate
increases. That’s rubbish it has
been caused by councillors’’. Yes,
property revaluations have had a
real impact but we always made
it clear that changes to the
Revenue and Financing Policy
were also going to have an
impact. The impact of these key
drivers was always going to vary
depending on property type and
location.
Statement ‘‘We have heard
that our local councillors were
given misleading figures by
staff’’. While this may have been
interpreted by one or more councillors,
this is absolutely not the
case. As a council we are
extremely fortunate to have a
Chief Executive with absolute
integrity and highly qualified
and experienced financial staff.
Councillors were kept well and
accurately informed throughout
the process. Mr Bishop should be
mindful that he has been guilty of
giving the community misleading
figures and information
through his Letters to the Editor.
Statement ‘‘There is ample
opportunity to reduce costs, service
core infrastructure and plan
affordable growth for future generations’’.
Maintaining infrastructure
and good strategic planning
are key requirements for
this council. Reducing costs can
be achieved if the level of service
and facilities is reduced. The
community has clearly signalled
that they want current levels of
service maintained. It must be
pointed out that the Citizens and
Ratepayers Association
supported a new library and
museum in their submission to
the 10-Year Plan. You can’t have
your cake and eat it.
We have stated our position
on the rates increases many
times in the media and no longer
intend to revisit those. Let’s
approach issues with a positive
attitude and focus on the future
and what a great district we live
in.
Fonterra staff roll up
sleeves for community
A group of enthusiastic
Fonterra staff helped clean up
Centennial Park during Keep
New Zealand Beautiful Week.
With gloves on hands, high-vis
jackets on backs and carrying
black sacks they quickly spread
over the park to clear rubbish.
Items found ranged from bags
of household rubbish and empty
glass bottles to road cones and
spare tyres.
Te Awamutu Environmental
Team Leader Marc Carney says
the team put plenty of effort into
improving an area which is frequently
used by children.
‘‘The team worked religiously
from west to east covering every
metre of the park.’’
Overcoming the first hurdle of
rubbish recovery, the team
quickly moved into rehabilitation
of this lovely, but often
underused, environment.
‘‘Armed with shovels and
three-four metre trees, the team
set about adding to the plantings
in the park.
‘‘The final hurdle was to
ensure the pond was secure for
the teams of youth which frequent
this park.
‘‘Pulling pliers from holsters,
the fence was repaired to ensure
consistent security along the perimeter.’’
Mr Carney says he is grateful
to the many Fonterra staff members
and Waipa Council staff who
turned up to make this a successful
event.
‘‘I’m sure the community
appreciates their efforts and it
has significantly improved an
environment that our children
play in.’’
As many as 500 shoeboxes
full of of things to love, things
to wear, things for hygiene
and things to enjoy will be
leaving Te Awamutu for children
in Fiji and Cambodia in
time for Christmas, if Joan
McManus has her way.
And she is determined her
target will be met, she says.
‘‘Last year we were down a
bit in the number of boxes we
sent away.
‘‘We sent only 380 to children
last year, because we
also sent 300 boxes to the
victims of the Christchurch
earthquake,’’ Mrs McManus
says.
‘‘But this year I’ve got 500
boxes, and already Te Awamutu
Primary School has
taken 100 of them.
‘‘It’s wonderful to be
teaching our children that
compared with many other
places they are so fortunate
and that it is good to share
some of what they have with
children who have little or
nothing.’’
More than 1200 boxes have
been sent from Te Awamutu
in the past five years. Ideally,
each box should contain
something to love, something
to wear, something to read,
something that is fun, something
for hygiene, and something
especially for either a
boy or a girl.
Operation Christmas
Child first began in Wales,
rapidly spread to the United
States, and was taken up in
New Zealand almost a decade
ago. Mrs McManus began the
Te Awamutu branch of the
organisation six years ago,
and has since sent shoeboxes
of Christmas joy to children
all over the world.
The operation comes
TC270912SP12A
CRAFT With a Purpose group from Te Awamutu Baptist Church filling Shoe Boxes for this
year’s Operation Christmas Child.
under the umbrella of the
international relief agency
Samaritan’s Purse, which
works with children in more
than 100 countries worldwide.
Mrs McManus says that
this year, members of the Te
Awamutu Men’s Shed are
contributing a number of
handmade toys.
As well, Paper Plus and
the Mainly $2 shop have
consented to having the
shoeboxes available in their
businesses, and if members
of the public fill the boxes
with goods from either shop
they will be given a 10 per
cent discount on the purchases.
‘‘There are a number of ladies in the town
who spend the whole year making all sorts of
things — dolls, trinket boxes, hair decorations,
clothing, beanies and toys,’’ she says.
‘‘But the things the children most love to get
Mrs McManus says every
from the age of two to 14, is
given one of the parcels.
She says the boxes can be
filled by individuals, families,
The boxes should be
The church is open
Monday to Friday from 9am
Wonderful array of
handmade goods
at iconic craft day
The Pirongia Craft Day draws thousands of visitors every year, regardless
of the weather.
It is a special day that features New Zealand handmade or home-grown
goods as well as a wide variety of food and some fun entertainment for adults
and children alike.
The event was started 34 years ago by a volunteer committee of dedicated
local arts and crafts people who could see the potential for a unique, relaxed
festival day.
In fact it was known as the Pirongia Cottage Crafts Festival Day when it
began in 1978. It was run by a group of cottage crafters who had been involved
in the relocation and preservation of the original Pirongia School building (now
used by Pirongia Playcentre).
Initially it was only for local stall holders and was intended as a way to
support local non profit community groups.
The current committee upholds this vision by inviting local community
groups to stage food stalls.
(Only those specifically invited by the committee can take part in the day).
A stallholders fee from crafters ensures the survival of the craft day and any
surplus funds are redistributed to the community groups.
SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE
This year there are over 200 stalls featuring everything from plants,
preserves and pottery to clothing, jewellery, garden ornaments and
homewares. No commercial, secondhand or imported goods are accepted.
The main street of Pirongia (Franklin Street) will be closed off from 6am to
allow for the stall holders to set up, with the craft day kicking off at 9am.
Entertainment includes a stiltwalker, the ‘Jellyman’, musician Johnny
Nelson, school groups and the pipe band.
Parking is available on side streets, at Pirongia School or Pirongia Rugby
Grounds.
The Pirongia Craft Day will finish at 3pm with the road re-opening around
4pm.
Weddings
Ten top tips for a terrifi c wedding
✿ Dream location
An outdoor setting will maximise
some of the beautiful scenery we
have in this country, but be prepared
for bad weather with an alternative
location or a marquee.
✿ Written with love
Bringing beautifully crafted stationery
into your wedding will say a lot
about your style. Made-to-order invitations,
place cards, menus, seating
plans that have a special design will
really stand out on the day.
✿ Enhancements
Bring an evening to life with the glow
of fairy lights, strung festoons and lanterns.
It’s about creating the mood, so
nothing too bright.
✿ Creative crafts
Hand-made preserves or baked
goods for guests are such a treat to
receive - and don’t forget the labels.
Create your own personalised monogram
and have it printed on.
✿ Fresh fl owers
Tie in colour with petal aisles and scattered
blooms on tables. Maybe think
outside the box with succulents, lemons
or fresh rosemary. Fragrant herbs
in vintage pots are also a winner and
an easy take home gift for guests.
✿ Eat, drink, be married
Consider alternatives to the threecourse
sit-down meal - perhaps long
tables covered with gourmet platters,
or a cocktail menu where guests
graze on canapes. Maybe consider
a dish from a country of origin.
✿ Putting it together
A wedding co-ordinator can help organise
your day. Check their portfolio
to make sure they will understand
your style and preferences. Co-ordinators
are the gel for the whole event,
handling the unexpected, offering
advice and minimising stress.
8911979AA
8913914AA
8911837AA
✿ Photographers
Hiring a professional and trusted photographer
should be a priority on
any budget. Make sure it is someone
you feel relaxed around. Get creative
or even theatrical with your wedding
shoot - have some fun.
✿ Entertainment
You can’t beat live music. Arrival
impressions last, so having a well
thought out playlist or string quartet
playing when guests arrive, it will set
the scene for a romantic evening.
Consider your favourite alternative
tune/s for the ceremony as well.
✿ Details
Personalise wherever you can - from
stationery to decorations. Fragrant
candles are nice to scent the room,
Consider using local produce in your
menu and perhaps plant a native
tree to mark the occasion.
Lim makes it two
in a row at champs
Points leader Ohaupo
youngster Marvin Lim
dreams of being a professional
ice hockey, and judging
by his performances to
date, it may become a reality.
For the second year running
the 12-year-old was
selected for the Auckland Ice
Hockey Association Under 13
representative ice hockey
team.
And for the second year
the team won gold at the
national ice hockey championships,
held this year in
Auckland.
‘‘There was a lot of pressure
because the Auckland
team has won gold for the
last four years, so we were
going for the fifth title in a
row, which has never been
done before in our grade.’’ he
says.
The games were close,
with fierce competition in
the early games.
Auckland won their first
two games against Christchurch
and Southern (Otago
District), but they were hard
fought with close scores.
On the final day they
played a masterful third
game against Southern, winning
6-0 to secure the championship
title, but barely an
hour later they were back on
the rink for their final game
against Christchurch.
Marvin had an excellent
tournament receiving the
Player of the Match award
for the final game.
He was first equal for
points among the Auckland
team. Players are awarded a
point for every goal and
every assist, when they set a
team-mate up for a goal.
In 2011 Marvin was
awarded Auckland Ice
Hockey’s Rookie of the Year,
and this year, as one of the
more experienced team
members, he was elected one
of the two assistant captains.
Marvin has also played
inline hockey for the Morrinsville
Pirates since he was
five-years-old, and started
playing ice hockey as well
two years ago, to build
toward his dream of a professional
career.
TC270912SP19A
NATIONAL ice hockey champion Marvin Lim of Ohaupo.
He has a gruelling training
and playing schedule
which involves four trips to
Auckland each week for ice
hockey training and games,
one inline training in Morrinsville
per week, and
travelling as far as New
Plymouth for inline games at
weekends.
He says it is very hard,
especially the travelling, but
it is worth it to get the chance
to play at high levels of both
codes.
Marvin gratefully
acknowledges the support of
the Ohaupo-Ngahinepouri
Lions, which awarded him a
Faye Coxhead Memorial
grant earlier this year.
With the ice hockey
nationals now over, Marvin
will now concentrate on
training for the 2012 inline
hockey Inter-regional Competition,
representing the
Central Region — Waihi,
Hamilton, Morrinsville, Tauranga
and New Plymouth.
Marvin is aiming to achieve
double success and be in both
the inline and ice national
gold medal winning teams.
The inline hockey highlight
so far this year for
Marvin was wearing the silver
fern in the New Zealand
12-and-under team for the
2012 Inline Hockey Oceania
Tournament, where his team
won gold, and New Zealand
won the Tasman Cup over
their Australian rivals.
Representing his
country at such a young age
was a great achievement.
As the youngest player in
the team, he had to work
extremely hard throughout
the arduous trialling process
— over 70 players
competed for just 14 places
in the team.
Cold day doesn’t stop bowlers
A cold and blustery day didn’t deter a good
turn-out of club members and visitors at
the Pirongia Bowling Club’s season opening
day last weekend.
Jessie Young rolled the first jack, with
club life member Rob Goodhew bowling the
first ball of the season. Three games were
played, resulting in a win in the triples to
Bob Kewish, Raye Bauke, and Ski McLean.
Runners-up were Fritz Cameron, Les
Liddington, Laurie Roycroft and Lyall
Thomas.
Bowls honour for
‘low key’ sportsman
Ron
Parsons says
he’s really the
low-key member
of his family
when it
comes to
sports.
His four
children have
been or still are
heavily
involved in
sport, and his
wife Beverley
is, he says
‘‘very good at
golf, and was
also pretty
good at tennis
too’’.
But now the
67-year-old
Pirongia
farmer has
found himself the centre of attention,
after being awarded life membership
of the Pirongia Bowling Club recently.
‘‘I’d never played bowls before we
moved up to Pirongia in 1992,’’ he says.
‘‘We were farming at Murupara for
15 years before we moved up here. I
joined the Pirongia Bowling Club
almost straight away when we arrived
— bowls was a quick and easy sport to
get into, and I’ve really enjoyed it.’’
And it’s not just the bowling aspect
of the sport that got him hooked. He
became seriously involved in the
administration of his club, and within
three years was elected club president.
He held that position for the next five
years, then took on the role of vicepresident
for two years.
‘‘I was also club secretary —
treasurer for five years, and for about
the past 10 years I’ve been the club
tournament secretary,’’ he says.
The work involves organising
teams to take part in tournaments,
‘‘I don’t think there’s a title in
the club I haven’t won over the
years. It’s a very good sport, and
helps keep me fit,’’ he says.
Mr Parsons says sport has
always been a strong part of life
among his family members.
His three sons, Andrew, Richard
and Geoffrey, are or have been
keen rugby players, while his
daughter, Angela, is a dedicated
horsewoman.
Ron joins a small and select
group of life members of the
Pirongia Bowls Club. There are
only five others: Rob Goodhew,
Peter Kendell, Joan Oates, Pam
Club president Peter Kewish
says the life membership
bestowed on Mr Parsons was welldeserved.
Local lifeguards win IRB race
TC270912SP21A
LIFEGUARDS (from left) Shane Edwards, Sam Dwen and Mark Edwards with their trophies from the 90
Mile IRB Classic.
Two local lifeguards
helped the Trust Waikato
Sunset Beach A team win
this year’s 90 Mile IRB
Classic by one of the
closest margins ever.
Brothers Shane and
Mark Edwards of Ohaupo
were joined by Sam Dwen
in the race, which saw
them pitted against 29
teams from all over the
North Island.
Their endurance race
began at Scott’s Point, the
furthest point on 90 Mile
Beach, with a sprint from
the sand dunes down to
the IRB’s on the water’s
edge.
Sunset Beach A team
were first in the water
and lead the first stage of
the journey.
Normally at this point
the boats would travel
within the wave break
south to Motupia Island.
But because of the
adverse weather
conditions the leg out and
around the island was
cancelled.
Instead they travelled
north, back to the start
then turned and continued
south, crossing the
Bluff.
The boat and motor is
carried across the bluff,
refuelling occurs here,
then they are off again,
south to Hukatere hill.
Two of the crew have a
two kilometre run up the
hill to collect a tag then
return, while the third
member refuels.
At the next stage the
motor is taken off the
boat, carried up the beach
around a flag and then
back to the boat.
After refuelling they
then carry on to the finish
at Ahipara.
After almost two and a
half hours there was only
six seconds between the
first and second placegetters
(Paekakariki).
This is the fourth time
the Sunset Beach team
has taken part in the
race.
Previous results have
ranged from seventh to
second last year.
Team manager
Waikato Toyota
Carolyn Edwards says
the win this year was just
reward for all the hard
training over the cold
winter months.
‘‘The club is extremely
proud of these lifeguards.
‘‘This is truly an
endurance competition
and to not only finish but
to win, shows outstanding
lifesaving skills, fitness,
strength and determination.
‘‘The team will now
begin preparation for the
lifesaving season which
starts over Labour Weekend.’’
The three team members
are all volunteer
lifeguards at Sunset
Beach (Port Waikato).
‘Loving’ Swim For Life
TC270912DT08
WATER Safety New Zealand Waikato water safety advisor Sarah Mortimer works with a group of Pekerau School
students as part of the Sealord Swim For Life programme at the Livingstone Aquatic Centre.
Swimming for more than 200
youngsters at Pekerau School now
has become part of their way of life
over the past two years — and
they’re loving it.
The children, from Year 3 up,
have been part of the nationwide
Sealord Swim For Life programme
aimed at cutting water-related
accidents and tragedies around the
country.
The latest session was at the
Livingstone Aquatic Centre last
week.
And for Pekerau School principal
John Cubitt the value of the
programme is ‘‘superb’’.
‘‘We don’t have a pool at school,
and the Sealord Swim For Life
system is offering our children a
professionally run programme
which not only teaches them to
swim but also the basics of survival
in the water,’’ he says.
This is the second year his
school has been part of the pro-
More children will be participating
next term, and he hopes the
school can be involved again next
year if the programme continues.
‘‘For the non-swimmers in the
school, this is just great. We have
had children who wouldn’t even
put a toe in the water, and to see
them now having fun and enjoying
being in the water, able to put their
faces under and building their
confidence — it’s huge for them,’’
says Mr Cubitt.
‘‘I can’t speak too highly of the
programme for the benefit it brings
to the children. Sealord is doing a
great job promoting swimming and
water safety around the country.’’
The programmes provide 10
swimming lessons for year 3 to 6
students, with the ultimate goal of
having each child able to swim 200
metres.
It also teaches them survival
and water safety skills.
8896187AA
Sarah Mortimer, Waikato water
safety advisor for Water Safety
New Zealand, says that partnering
with Harlequin Swim School at the
Te Awamutu Events Centre has
been hugely successful and allows
the programme to reach more children.
The programme has involved
Pekerau School, Waipa Christian
School, Pokuru School and Nga
Pura pura o Te Aroha Kura Kaupapa.
The lessons are all fully funded,
and there is no cost to the children.
Only one in five 10-year-old New
Zealand children can swim 200
metres, and 80 percent of all
10-year-olds are unable to swim
well enough to save themselves.
New Zealand has one of the
highest drowning rates in the
developed world — twice as high as
Australia and three times as high
as Great Britain and the United
States.
Small’s team wins Tailby Buttons event
Dawn Small skipped Julie
Appledoorn and Val Sargent to win
the Tailby Buttons at the Te Awamutu
Bowling Club last weekend,
with 3 1/2 wins and 32 points.
Runners-up were Barbara Ryburn
and Gael Connolly with 3 1/2 wins
and 31 points.
Third place was taken by Joy
Allen, Lynda Bennett and Pat Oliver
with three wins and 30 points.
In the Men’s Handicap Pairs,
Jim Roigard and Trevor Duffell
defeated Les Ashby and Chris Tail
21-13.
The semi-finals saw Jim Roigard
eliminate Bruce Amas and Bryan
Ryburn, while Les Ashby defeated
Terry Osment and John Taylor.
The Pirongia Bowling Club held
its first tournament for the season
in excellent weather with the
greens in near-perfect condition.
Frankton Junction took the honours
with four wins, their team
being skip Frank Hancock, Noeline
